1st- my observation on the north carolina coast is that the past 5 or 6 years have been much windier. this opinion has been agreed with by locals who have been living there and fishing there all their lives.

lately i've been reading a book about the building of the atomic bomb(topic of a future thread) and it got me thinking about something that relates to this thread. and feel free to let me know where my theory falls apart, it is a work in progress.

if waves and winds are a transfer of energy through a medium in order to equalize the energy levels, wouldn't a shift in the energy balance of the planet result in higher waves and stronger winds unless the increase was evenly spread across the planet?

currently we hear lots about global warming from greenhouse gases trapping solar radiation resulting in increased heat energy, etc.
this places the blame on the pollution from burning fossil fuels and gives a free pass to nuclear. that is, the global warming is a by product of the pollution from burning the fuel. but it seems to me this is only responsible for part of the energy increase.

now, my theory.

when we burn fossil fuels, or when we cause a nuclear reaction to take place, aren't we essentially converting matter directly into energy?
wouldn't this then affect the energy balance of the planet?
with fossil fuels we would be releasing energy that was sequestered millions of years ago. with a nuke plant the energy has been in the form of matter since the begining of time.

wind power and hydro would not have this effect because they don't convert matter to energy. they only change it from one form of energy to another.

so, is global warming and increased winds an inevitable outcome from the industrial revolution and the conversion of matter into energy?
has every drop of oil burned and every atom smashed increased the overall energy level of the planet?
would we have this energy increase and the resulting global warming even if we could eliminate all pollution from the conversion process?

again, this theory just kinda popped into my head so it may be quite foolish but i'd welcome any and all opinions. :starz:

"Earth Getting Mysteriously Windier"

This thread appeared on April 5th; Obama announced he was going to run again on April 4th. Is it really any coincidence that the world suddenly got "mysteriously windier" just one day after that bag of hot air announced he was going to run again? I think not…

Fierce wind gusts caused havoc in and around Steamboat Springs on Thursday morning

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Fierce wind gusts caused havoc in and around Steamboat Springs on Thursday morning.

Steamboat Ski Area was closed throughout the day because of strong winds. The ski area reported a gust of 123 mph early Thursday.

Ski Area spokesman Mike Lane said the winds picked up around midnight, and at 6:10 a.m., Tower 30 at the top of the gondola lift registered a gust of 100 mph. One hour later, it measured the peak gust of 123 mph.

Elsewhere, a section of roof blew off the Spring Creek Meadows condominium building off Walton Creek Road.

A portion of the roof blew into a neighboring condo complex, smashing several windows.

Here's the reason for all the wind from everybody's favorite Seattle meteorologist -- and yes the reason appears to be historically record breaking.

History is Made: Highest Pressure in Sea-Tac History!
We are living through historic weather. UW's Neal Johnson ran the numbers and found that the sea level pressure at Seattle-Tacoma Airport today was the highest since record keeping began there in 1948. Here are the top pressures since 1948, starting with the highest pressure first.

2011 12 01 08 1043.4
2011 12 01 07 1043.3
2011 12 01 09 1043.2
2011 12 01 10 1043.2
2011 12 01 11 1043.1
1949 01 28 16 1043.0
1949 01 28 17 1043.0
1949 01 28 14 1042.7
2011 12 01 06 1042.6
1949 01 28 13 1042.3
1949 01 28 15 1042.3
1949 01 28 18 1042.3
1949 01 28 19 1042.3
1957 01 16 10 1042.3
1957 01 16 11 1042.3

Last night at midnight Sea-Tac hit 1043.4 hPa, smashing the old record of 1043.0 hPa.

According to the Weather Underground site the highest pressure in Seattle occurred on 12/3/1921 (1043.90 hPa), but that was at a very different location (downtown Seattle, not the airport) and thus not a fair comparison.
I hope someone contacts Ripley's Believe It or Not.

Highest Pressure in Decades Over The Northwest?

Do you feel the pressure? Is it like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? There may be a reason: right now we are experiencing some of the highest atmospheric pressures in years and probably decades.

Take a look at the National Weather Service sea level pressure analysis at 7 PM (below).

A very strong high pressure area is centered over the Northwest and southwest Canada, with pressures greater than 1040 hPa over much of the region and a 1046 hPa center over southern BC. 1046 hPa is equivalent to 30.89 inches of mercury. Folks, this is REALLY high sea level pressure. At Sea-Tac the 9 pm pressure was 1042.6 hPa--and it is still going up! There has been a huge pressure rise over the past 24h--roughly 20 hPa. The highest SLP I see at 9 PM is 1045.2 hPa at Lytton BC (elev 751 ft).

From experience I know these pressures are very unusual, but lets check the UW pressure archives. Here are the hourly pressures at Sea-Tac airport since 1996. Looks to me like the pressure last hour (9PM Wednesday is the final plotted red dot) was the highest during the entire record shown here (I confirmed by looking at the numbers). So the highest pressure in 15 years! That is impressive.

And the pressure is still going up! The Portland International Airport has recorded a maximum barometric pressure reading of 30.76" (4:53am observation) which is tied for the second highest reading since records began at the airport in 1940 (thanks to Steve Pierce for this information). The bottom line is that we are experiencing truly unusual pressure right now...I wonder what this does to people with arthritis and sensitive joints.

This push of high pressure over the Northwest is creating huge pressure gradients over the southwest U.S. Here is the latest model prediction for tomorrow morning. High pressure over us and a big pressure differences over Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, and the offshore waters.

Very strong winds will be the result of these big pressure gradients, including gusts hitting 50-80 mph in places. In fact, it has already started. Take a look at the latest wind reports of greater than 45 mph over the western U.S.---quite a few of them.

And here are some recent reports from the National Weather Service office near Los Angeles. Gusts as high as 69 mph so far.

My girlfriend had a headache all day yesterday and I had a pain in my shoulder I never get. Also, it's so stagnant that I can literally smell the air pollution right now as I type this coming in the window.

The winds in Los Angeles the other night were nothing like I've ever seen here. We get winds a few times of year, sometimes a few trees and fences get knocked over, but I've never seen anything like this. I know several people whose power is still out and may not be restored till monday. Streetlights right by our house are still out, and it's a blessing actually because traffic is moving MUCH better with humans directing the traffic.

It howled through here for hours. Our power was out for quite some time but fortunately is back on now.

I was going to make some other point but can't remember now what it was.

I guess we're lucky there weren't any fires burning when it kicked up. We've had some decent rains already Allah be praised.

Well, I'm sorry to have to say this, but I have been eating a lot of beans and pulses since I turned vegetarian a week or two ago.

Dude, that's gross. And what the hell is a "pulse"?

Help still needed after record-breaking year for disasters

From the tsunami in Japan to famine in East Africa to the deadly tornado outbreaks in the United States, 2011 has been a historic year for natural disasters.

A dozen weather-related disasters in the United States alone have caused more than $1 billion in damages each, breaking the record of nine billion-dollar disasters set in 2008, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Altogether, the damage from these events exceeds $50 billion.

"In many ways, 2011 rewrote the record books. From crippling snowstorms to the second deadliest tornado year on record to epic floods, drought and heat, and the third busiest hurricane season on record, we've witnessed the extreme of nearly every weather category," said NOAA spokesman Christopher Vaccaro.

It is interesting that this isn't a bigger story - you'd think so much $ cost would whack a little sense into people, but no. Thats okay, Mother Nature can double down next year.

but think of all the people who have to be hired to fix all the broken shit.

obviously this wind is a "job creator" and we shouldn't complain.

2nd tornado outbreak this week leaves trail of death, destruction

At least 28 people were killed, including 14 in Indiana, and dozens of others were hurt in the second deadly tornado outbreak this week.

It wasn't immediately clear how many people were missing.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said late Friday night it had a preliminary total of 91 tornado reports (some could be multiple reports of the same tornado). The average for the entire month of March over the last three years is 74, according to the National Weather Service statistics. ..

• Marysville, Ind.: The unincorporated town of about 1,900 people in southern Indiana was "completely gone,'' a local sheriff's department spokesman said.

It appears that predictions this tornado season will be above average are being proven with deadly accuracy. Last years slew of tornadoes that killed 250 in Alabama occurred in April. It is only March 3 now.

Everyone should make sure when the weather turns bad they stay tuned in to their local news and be alert. Weather apps on smart phones are another great way to stay informed on dangerous weather.

The Weather Channel has a great app that gives severe weather warnings on both the iPhone and Android phones.

We've got or had major flooding across four states since new year (not your little texas sized states either), third year running following a decade of extreme drought, but at least the wind don't eat you.
