THE UNIVERSALITY OF INCEST
by Lloyd DeMause

The Journal of Psychohistory, Fall 1991, Vol. 19, No. 2

Two kinds of incest will be considered: direct incest, overt sexual activity between family members other than spouses; and indirect incest, the providing of children by their parents to others in order for them to be sexually molested.

There are two reasons why I believe indirect incest must be included in any definition of incestuous activity. First of all, arranging for children to have sex with other household members or neighbors is usually motivated by the incestuous wishes of the parent; and, in any case, it is usually perceived by the child to be similar to direct incest. Secondly, clinical studies show that contemporary sexual abuse usually involves a parent or guardian, who, if not the direct perpetrator, covertly brings about the incident in order to satisfy their own incestuous wishes.(15)

CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE IN CONTEMPORARY WESTERN SOCIETIES

In determining the actual incidence of childhood sexual abuse in modern societies, the main problem is that one must rely upon witnesses who have enormous emotional difficulties in reporting what they find — far more so than with any other psychohistorical subject I have encountered.

For one thing, most writers on the subject have themselves usually been advocates of pedophilia. Ever since the early studies of such sexologists as Symonds and Eglinton,(37) most writing on incest has been by scholars hoping to justify sexual relations with children by showing how widespread the practice has been. Many openly state, as do Allen Edwardes and R. E. L. Masters, that “there is no shame in being a … pederast or a rapist if one is satisfied,” (38) or claim that incest can be a positive, healthy experience,” as does social worker LeRoy Schultz, who writes extensively on childhood sexuality. (39) Even Kinsey wrote: “It is difficult to understand why a child, except for its cultural conditioning, should be disturbed at having its genitalia touched,” (40) while his coauthor in the Kinsey studies, Wardell Pomeroy, wrote that “incest between adults and younger children can … be a satisfying and enriching experience …”(41)

One must use the research of such scholars with extreme caution, since their main motive is to deny the coercion involved when adults seduce lonely, unloved children. Yet the task of digging through the truly staggering amount of literature on sexuality in past and present societies (42) (there are over sixty journals alone with regular articles on the subject) is so overwhelming that, in order to locate the rare primary sources that are available, the researcher cannot avoid consulting the life work of pedophilia advocates.
….
Therefore, the best estimates for memories of childhood sexual abuse we now have for the United States are 40 percent for girls and 30 percent for boys, almost half directly incestuous for girls and about a quarter directly incestuous for boys. (51)

Yet even these astonishingly high figures are only a portion of the hidden true incidence rates. Four additional factors raise the actual rates even higher:

The groups interviewed do not include many people in the American population who have far higher than average sexual molestation experiences, including institutionalized criminals, prostitutes, juveniles in shelters and psychotics (52), the studies only count admissions to the interviewer of abuse, and it is unlikely that no conscious memories were ever suppressed during the interviews, a large percent of each study refused to be interviewed, and these may have been the most victimized of all,(53) and most importantly, these studies include only clear conscious memories of events — unconscious memories, which are usually only uncovered during psychotherapy, would increase these rates.

It is possible to correct the incidence rates statistically for these factors, Although only 11 percent of Russell’s respondents recalled being victimized before the age of five, another study shows the most common age of sexual abuse reported to authorities is four years, while other studies report that from 21 to 50 percent of reported sexual abuse victims involve children under five.(54) Since few people consciously recall traumatic events of any kind before the age of five, and since the graph for sexual abuse distribution by age runs roughly level from ages two to sixteen,(55) the incidence figures stated above should be increased by at least an additional 50 percent(56) to account for these three factors, Therefore, the corrected incidence rates are at least 60 percent for Girls and 45 percent for boys. Until someone is courageous enough to directly question the children themselves whether they have been molested — a simple procedure that has never been done in any published study to date — 60 and 45 percent should be considered as the most reliable national incidence rates we now have available for the U.S.

These reports of childhood seduction are considered by researchers to be real memories, not fantasies. Not only do most researchers conclude, like Russell, that “underdisclosure was a significant problem … not fabrication of experiences,” (57) but another study of 53 women that attempted to independently confirm memories of childhood incest found 74 percent could be positively confirmed plus another 9 percent indirectly supported, while none were discovered to be just fantasies.(58)

The best evidence for the cause of pedophilia is provided by the clinical reports of the psychotherapists who have written extensively on the subject.(74) The pedophile, similar to other perverts, suffers from severe lack of love and fears of individuation in his or her early childhood, and both desires and dreads merging with the mother because of an enormous need to reinstate mother-child unity. Earlier childhood abuse of pedophiles is commonly found. As an adult, the pedophile must have sex with children in order to maintain the illusion of being loved, while at the same time dominating the children as they themselves once experienced domination, repeating actively their own caretaker’s sadism. The pedophile uses the child as a breast-substitute, both in the sense of using him or her for gratification and also as an object for sadistic aggression.

The pedophile’s sexual activity is extraordinarily compulsive because it wards off recurring feelings of fragmentation, depression and death. This helps explain why the pedophile’s sexual targets are so interchangeable and why an active pedophile often seduces hundreds of children in his or her life. The seduction of children is a desperate defense against fears of personal disintegration. It should not be thought of — as it usually is by historians and anthropologists — as “an outbreak of instinctual sexuality.” or as being due to “a lack of impulse controls” or “a weak superego.” Adults who molest children have extremely powerful punitive superegos and are often highly religious. They are driven to their acts not by their sexual instincts but by their overwhelming intrapsychic anxieties. Given the seriousness of the perversion, it is not surprising that successful therapeutic methods have only recently become available.(75)

The time when one could deny that sexual seduction is extremely traumatic for children appears to have ended. The more studies that come out on the effects of childhood sexual abuse, the more severe the damage is found to be. The flood of books and articles documenting the emotional problems of victims both in childhood and in later life has to be read in detail to appreciate the profound sense of betrayal and the terrifying fears felt by the child, so that even single incidents have the power to permanently ravage their lives. Severe somatic reactions, depersonalization, self-hatred, hysterical seizures, depression, borderline personality formation, promiscuity, sexual dysfunctions, suicide, self-mutilation, night terrors and flashbacks, multiple personalities, post-traumatic stress disorders, delinquency, bulimia, and the overall stunting of feelings and capacities have all been documented — the earlier and the more often the abuse, the worse the damage.(76)

My impression is that whatever efforts the pedophocracy was once making to infiltrate the left have been put on the back burner for a few decades. I appreciate your rebuttal, guruilla, of the idea that child abuse is rare.

My impression is that the "left" does not need to be infiltrated because it was created (via the Fabian Society) as an organ of the "pedocracy," so-called.

Meanwhile, here's this, which I'm posting here for the Hampstead link: UK Daily Mail, June 24 2015:

Lord Janner and the paedophile ring at his son's elite school: Labour peer's link to institution where teachers abused boys

To upwardly mobile residents of Seventies North London, an old boy’s tie from University College School, Hampstead, was the ultimate social calling card.

An exclusive institution, with Edwardian architecture and picturesque games pitches, it admitted only the brightest boys, and was rightly famed for creative, sporting and academic prowess.

The ranks of ‘Old Gowers’, as alumni are known, included a host of the great and good, from athlete Roger Bannister to film star Dirk Bogarde and the celebrated mountaineer Chris Bonnington.

Despite its fee-paying status, UCS was (and still is) run according to a liberal philosophy that included a statutory ban on religious education and a refusal to acknowledge, in any formal way, differences of ethnic or cultural background.

This made it the favourite public school of the local area’s social elite, who — in time-honoured tradition — were happy to overlook any principled opposition to private education when it came to the treatment of their own children.

The roster of pupils duly contained the offspring of many Labour grandees, including both sons of the party’s former Prime Minister, Harold Wilson.
A few years later, UCS would educate the likes of Tristram Hunt, the son of a Labour peer (and now Shadow Education Secretary), Jonathan Freedland, the Left-wing commentator, and Ian Katz, a former Guardian journalist who is editor of BBC2’s Newsnight.

Yet behind its historic red-brick facade there lay a troubling secret. For throughout this heady era, the UCS staff room was home to four paedophile teachers, who used their positions of authority to prey on teenage pupils.

The ring, led by politics teacher Michael Densham, was sensationally exposed in 2004 by the writer and entrepreneur Jonathan Self, who had attended the school with his brother, Will, the novelist.

In an autobiography titled Self Abuse, Jonathan revealed that he had ‘suffered repeated sexual abuse by two of the masters at UCS senior school for most of the three years I spent there’, from 1970 onwards.

The book devoted an entire chapter to this catalogue of exploitation, saying it began on a school trip when he was ‘barely 13 years old’ and Densham plied him with alcohol until he was ‘vomiting drunk’.

‘He begged me to take off all my clothes and get into bed with him,’ Self recalled. ‘What started as, effectively, a rape continued much in the manner of an illicit affair.’

The teacher, then in his 30s, would typically take his victim to ‘restaurants, pubs and a gay club in the Finchley Road’, before ending their liaisons by forcing him to have sex in his car (‘short and hurried’) or in a bedroom of his home in Ealing, ‘a drawn-out business’ Self found ‘abhorrent’.

Over the course of the abusive relationship, Self says that Densham introduced him to several other paedophiles connected to UCS, including former pupil Basil Moss, who ‘was always kissing me and pinching my bottom’, and two teachers from the UCS junior school ‘who made a similar nuisance of themselves’.

Self was then raped by yet another professional associate of Densham’s called Tony Ford, a UCS art teacher, who ‘became so insistent I have sex with him that in the end I gave in’.

‘I wouldn’t keep harassing you,’ Self recalled Ford saying on the day he finally consented. ‘But I know you have done it with Mike and it just isn’t fair that you won’t do it with me.’

This troubling saga generated a smattering of ugly headlines when Self’s book was published, just over a decade ago.

Yet, perhaps due to the fact that Densham and Ford were no longer around (one disappeared, one committed suicide, in murky circumstances) no proper police investigation was conducted.

Instead, to the presumed relief of the authorities at UCS, the saga of the Seventies paedophile ring was allowed to slide quietly into history. That was then, however.

Today, things could be about to change. For, more than 40 years after Self was abused, events only a few miles from leafy Hampstead are about to return this sordid chapter in the public school’s history to the top of the news agenda.

To blame is Greville Janner, the former Labour MP, who has been splashed across the front pages in recent months.

The 86-year-old peer, a flamboyant amateur magician ennobled by Tony Blair, is at the centre of heated public debate over claims that for decades he was a prolific abuser of young boys.

Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders announced in April that the police had sufficient evidence to charge him with 22 paedophile offences, including 16 indecent assaults and six acts of buggery.

She added, however, that he will not face trial on a single one of the charges, involving nine separate children from 1969 to 1988, on the grounds that he is suffering dementia, which means he is ‘not fit to take part in any proceedings’.

The decision has sparked huge controversy, not least since dozens of further alleged victims have since come forward. The ruling is being reviewed, and an announcement regarding whether it will be overturned is expected imminently.

Police in Scotland are also looking into claims that Janner abused boys north of the border. Since they operate under a separate legal system to England, the peer could, in theory, face prosecution there.

The ongoing scandal further deepened this week when Labour MP Simon Danczuk used Parliamentary privilege to claim Janner had ‘violated, raped and tortured’ children inside the Houses of Parliament, molesting a nine-year-old boy, Paul Miller, at the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster.

Miller, who has given a signed statement to police, believes he was targeted after Janner began visiting his school, Braunstone Frith Primary, in Leicester.
He says he was then abused when the MP invited eight of its pupils to visit him at the Commons in 1969.

The Janner family — who have always proclaimed the peer’s innocence — would doubtless respond to Miller’s claims by pointing out that Janner was not elected to Parliament until 1970.

Either way, it’s nonetheless intriguing — not to say somewhat troubling — to discover that Braunstone Frith Primary wasn’t the only school on Janner’s radar during this murky period in his personal history.

During the late Sixties and Seventies, I can reveal that Janner just happened to be a regular visitor to the classrooms of University College School, where his circle of close acquaintances included a bespectacled teacher by the name of Michael Densham.

The two men met in 1968, when the future MP for Leicester West, who lived in Hampstead, decided to send his son, Daniel, to UCS.

They proceeded to forge a friendship which, according to several former pupils and members of staff, saw Janner build close links with Densham and his teenage pupils, visiting the school to lecture them on a regular basis.

Intriguingly, in light of this week’s revelations, he also invited its pupils on guided tours of Parliament.

What is more, during three General Election campaigns, one in 1970 and two in 1974, the paedophile teacher would even drive bus-loads of UCS sixth-form boys to Leicester to spend day after day working in Janner’s campaign office, and canvassing on his behalf.

‘Denham and Janner were as thick as thieves,’ is how one former pupil puts it.

‘He was constantly coming into school to do things such as lecture Mike’s politics society or help out his A-level class with projects.

‘You don’t think much of it at the time, but Densham was a showy bastard, who was well known for groping pupils and making dodgy sexual remarks.
‘With the benefit of hindsight, it does all look very, very suspicious.’

Paul Manski, a lawyer who left UCS in 1973, says: ‘Greville Janner came to school quite regularly to speak. I can recall two or three lectures while I was in the sixth form. They took place in a downstairs theatre called the Crypt, next to the cricket nets.

‘There were also quite a lot of times when Densham organised visits by boys to his constituency during elections.’

A friend of Manski, who went on one such Leicester trip, says: ‘It was sold to us as a chance to see a typical day in the life of a constituency MP.

‘I remember being shown around the offices of a local newspaper, going to his surgery and doing some canvassing, which was odd as I wasn’t really a Labour supporter. Greville Janner was perfectly friendly, and he and Densham were clearly close.

‘Densham was drawn to famous people and was an inveterate name-dropper. He always used to claim to be on first-name terms with Harold Wilson, too.’ Michael Alsford, a teacher at UCS from 1967 until 2005, confirms that Densham and Janner were well acquainted. He describes his former colleague as a ‘brilliant teacher, but obviously a flawed man’, and says that Densham would ‘take groups of boys up to Leicester West to help with canvassing at election times’.

Another former student recalls joining Janner on a private tour of the Commons.

‘I was a few years below his son, Danny, and met the MP when he came to speak to Densham’s class. We had a chat, and he then sent me a letter asking me to visit, so I did. Lots of other pupils went on similar tours.

‘Obviously, we all thought at the time that he was just being kind. But given what we now know, the whole thing does seem very dubious.’

All of which poses a couple of pressing questions. First, did Janner pursue relationships with any of the many, many boys he met via University College School?

And second, was he a member of a wider paedophile ring whose members included Mike Densham, Tony Ford and a smattering of UCS colleagues?
Perhaps they would be best pursued by the police.

In a statement this week, a UCS spokesman said it ‘takes the welfare and protection of its pupils as a matter of the utmost importance, and if the police were to contact the school we shall give them every assistance’.

One person who won’t be able to help them, however, is Michael Densham. Forced out of UCS in July 1980, after several complaints about his conduct, he was subsequently sacked by a primary school in Ealing, West London, after being caught sexually abusing a paperboy.

At around the same time, he inherited hundreds of thousands of pounds on the death of his well-to-do parents, but spent it all, in the words of a friend, on ‘boys, holidays and nightclubs’ in little more than a year.

Finding himself destitute, he began stealing money from former friends, was jailed in the late Eighties for credit card fraud and eventually committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on February 11, 1998.

As for Ford, the second named member of the UCS paedophile ring, he was suspended one Thursday in 1978, amid allegations that he had groped a teenage pupil.

He walked back to his nearby flat, packed a suitcase and drove away, never to be seen again by friends, colleagues or family members.

‘Tony just disappeared,’ says Alsford. ‘Police refused to investigate, so his mother hired a private investigator. But they never found any trace of him.’

Just another strange and murky twist in this increasingly unsettling scandal.

From 2013 Ham & High (local Hampstead paper):
Police officers searched a luxury flat belonging to Lord Greville Janner, 85, in West Heath Road on Monday and Tuesday.

A spokesman for the force said officers had travelled to Hampstead to carry out the searches earlier this week as part of a probe into historic child sex offences alleged to have taken place in the Leicestershire area.

No arrests have been made as part of the investigation and no one has been interviewed by police.

Lord Janner, a former Labour MP representing Leicester North West and then Leicester West for 27 years, was made a life peer [by Tony Blair] on his retirement from parliament in 1997 as Baron Janner of Braunstone, in Leicestershire.

..

He is associated with a number of Jewish organisations having served as president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews from 1978 to 1984.

He chairs the Holocaust Educational Trust and is vice president of the World Jewish Congress.

Lord Janner is described on his website as “a key international figure in efforts to seek compensation and restitution for Holocaust victims”.

And back to the present, daily Telegraph June 29 2015:

Lord Janner to be prosecuted for child sex offences

... In April the CPS revealed that police and prosecutors had missed three previous opportunities to prosecute Lord Janner, 1991, 2002 and 2007....

maybe - I am curious whether the article that the other thread is about was published in a different spirit closer to the activities of Joshua Goldberg - something more oriented towards nurturing chaos and destabilization

I would agree this may be close to the "bottom line", or underlying motive behind the recent revelations of the pedocracy and perhaps a lot of other interrelating 'hot issues" as well. Destabilized institutions = increased liminality = increased mimesis = more power to the false ceremony masters/charismatic leaders.

One of the as yet unmentioned implications of the Hampstead scandal, if it were true, is that the unveiling of high level political corruption is being carefully directed and contained, meaning that, when something comes out that isn't part of the prior-arrangement and includes public figures who haven't already been marked for 'straw for sacrifice" (even when only teachers, small-time actors, or local businessmen), it would have to be fiercely shut down.
It is a lot easier to fool people than show them how they have been fooled.

Likely being directed and contained by actors with divergent goals, to boot

I doubt all of the revelations are centrally co-ordinated although I'm sure there's a lot of that involved

This underlying motive we've touched on just now of destabilization need not be entirely separate from a goal of further normalizing of the organized abuse

It's interesting the degrees of ferocity with which revelations and discussion are shut down. There's a wide variation of responses, and it would be interesting to think there's a meaning to the variation

Dream's End comes to mind, again, as well as Casolaro, Kevin Annett, and a host of others (Project Willow elsewhere wrote recently about organized attacks on survivors speaking out about mind control programs).

Agreed. Nor would it mean that the use of pedophilia-as-blackmail/control of powerful figures by intelligence would be lost, because there are always worse things to hold over them/uncover, and a lot worse than pedophilia. (I think it is safe to say it will be a while before the torture and murder of children will be "PC.")

Yeah, I was saying to Plutonia the other day that this very thread is like a microcosm or mini-enactment of how the whole mechanism (that of shutting down discussion and even thinking) works. I guess RI is a kind of lab in that regard.

Very astute! You've summed it up perfectly.

I agree that some of the "dots" or information contained in those videos is flimsy, highly speculative, and would never hold up in a court of law; however, when added to everything else that we know about this case, I think even the flimsiest of information should be considered as it could lead to more substantial evidence or information.

And for those who think the mother forced her children to make these accusations against their father to punish him or get back at him for whatever reason, ask yourself why she would deliberately create such a complicated, outrageous, "unbelievable" story that implicates so many people more powerful than herself. To ensue that her life becomes a nightmare?

Not to say she's totally innocent. She may have been involved in the abuse at one time, and decided, for whatever reason, to turn against them. Or, she could've known all along and finally summoned the courage to reveal the abuse. Or, it's possible she did not know of the abuse at all...believe it or not, that's a possibility.

When vegetable soup is cooked water is the medium in which the soup is cooked. As it refers to this topic I see 'trauma' in a similar way as the medium in which a coercive psychic change is forced upon the psyche of unsuspecting targets.

I heard from Jaqui Farmer after writing a blog post linked to this thread. She wanted me to correct the above link, saying, quote,
it is one of the several fake sites that have been constructed by the cult/trolls/intel. This site [ie, http://www.hampsteadresearch.com/] is my only website.

I can't edit the post coz too much time has passed, tho if a mod wants to I'd appreciate it.
It is a lot easier to fool people than show them how they have been fooled.

This video echoes my own feelings precisely, when I listened to the James Corbett report a few months ago, that Keelan Balderson is an untrustworthy source, and, for implicitly endorsing him, that the same goes for Corbett.

Just like the person who made this video, I also had dismissed the Hampstead case as too implausible. As much as the evidence itself, which I had not even looked at until recently (due to the strong whiff of hoax that the case gave off), it's been the nature of the denials, including some at this thread, that have slowly persuaded me otherwise.

When those who insist they KNOW it's all fake prove, time & again, that they don't know anything but only have fierce (or measured but disingenuous, in the case of Balderson) opinions to spout, while those who are questioning admit they can't be sure but simply present the evidence in a thorough and thoughtful way, what are we supposed to conclude?
