I just had a satisfying idea: If someone re-did the Obama poster, but with the word "capitalism" underneath instead of "socialism", that would fix the problem.

Fixed!

(Okay, almost fixed - all that would be missing would be the toothy grin).

It would transform the poster from insidious propaganda into biting political commentary. All would again be well with the world (regarding our perception of it). We could all dutifully hate Obama and it would solely be because he is helping the rich diddle the poor, with no suggestion that our hate has anything to do with the colour of his skin. In fact, with the changed caption, the white paint on his face would become profoundly symbolic, as would the brutal injury to his face.

[url=http://www.bagnewsnotes.com/2009/08/grandma-must-die.html]I went back to the doctor
To get another shrink
I sit and tell him bout my weekend
But he never betrays what he thinks

Can you see the real me, Doctor?
Doctor!
Can you see the real me, Doctor?

I went back to my mother
I said "I'm crazy ma, help me"
She said "I know how it feels son
Cause it runs in the family"

Can you see the real me, Mama?
Mama!

It's clearly agit-prop from the right. I agree that it's not "unsophisticated." It has racial connotations that are in absolute conflict with its other racial connotations, but it definitely has them on a literal level, although strictly speaking, it's not about race in itself on that basis.

I'd say that it's not really about anything rational enough to be capable of articulate verbal recapitulation in the form of one or more full sentences. And it's kind of a departure from traditional political messaging in that way. Nevertheless, I'd also say that it's part of the same political messaging campaign as McCain's "Celeb" ad from a year or so ago. Which also made no sense to people for whom sense-making is a major factor. The gist, in imaging terms, is always:

Obama = low/unnatural/less-than-human/vile/parasitic/dishonest/already has and feels entitled to take more of everything that real and decent people such as yourself deserve but don't get because low/unnatural/less-than-human worthless parasitic scum are slopping it up like pigs in shit with shit-eating grins, somehow both consuming and soiling all that is Good and/or of Good American Value.

I mean, look at what and whom the imaging says he's like:

Britney Spears
Paris Hilton
A Commie
Not naturally born
Not living
One or more than one drug addict
One or more than one irresponsible parent
One or more than one hypersexual being
Amoral people who get money for nothing
Amoral people who corrupt and endanger children
A clown-faced buffoon
A vicious killer who looks like a clown-faced buffoon

And on that basis, I'd say that it is about race. Or at a minimum that race is consistently a point of departure for the messaging.

Don't forget Socialism > Communism > Commies/Reds > Red outline of poster > Red lips > Lips > Lies > Socialism (which of course is off-base but enough to get the "Reds" scare, which is ingrained in older generations) = fear > fear of Reds/Communism.

Or I could be reading a whole lot into this in trying to figure out wtf this means.

At the risk of stating the obvious, some major displacement psyop goin' on, Obama is the rightwing's semi-officially designated fall-guy object/target lackey for the unacknowledged crimes & fraud of an empire predicated on parasitic destruction-capitalism based on war-industry, cheap-labor, debt exploitation and conspicuous consumption.

Symptom of a sick, sick, sick society, teetering on the knife-edge verge of psychopathic dysfunction -- the fear of losing control over motivates the PTB to practice ever-more deceptive, desperate & abusive power-politics.

I'd like to clarify my statement regarding its level of sophistication. I was merely targeting the formal aspects of its design - not necessarily its conceptual ones. I stand by the fact that the design of this poster contains unsophisticated formal design mistakes that a properly trained (and therefore, 95% certain to be a leftist) would not make.

I do agree that it is "clearly agit-prop from the right."

I really only have one question - where can I get a nice copy for my poster collection?
