Disclaimer: If you use a ouija please make sure you know what you're doing. I joke about them all the time, but I'd never use one without some kind of psychic condom. I don't feel like getting impregnanted by something that decided to psychically rape me when all I asked for was a date, if you know what I mean. >.<

Even though I was writing tongue-in-cheek about wanting to get a Ouija (if it was packaged to meet my 'standards' of esthetics), I started thinking more about how powerful advertising campaigns are in manipulating gullible consumers. When the Dalkon Shield was marketed as an IUD in the early 1970's, I saw a very clever ad featuring a model wearing 'The Shield' as an earring, That ad and the design of 'the product' persuaded me to get one. I reacted horribly to it and, in light of what happened to many women, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalkon_Shield, I was one of the fortunate ones in that I didn't end up in the hospital, and lucky that my future children were born.

A bit off topic, but a 'cautionary' example of how slick and sophisticated advertising campaigns will target all consumers, including children and teenagers, and sell potentially dangerous, life threatening products. As everyone knows.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. Only a cynical toy company executive who is spiritually unconscious would think it's a good idea. It's like leaving your little girl alone in a crack neighborhood in a house with an open door and a neon sign saying "c'mon in!"

My spooky grandmother gave me a Ouija board when I was 7. (The classic, beige with blue letters.)

I said "Wow! How much did it cost?"

And she slapped me gently on the cheek, and told me NEVER to ask the price of a gift.

My first (and only) reliable lesson from a Ouija board.

Thank you, Maddy, I'm tickled pink.

Today's busy parents can give their little princess a head start in life by hooking her on guns, money, TV and the occult. But don't forget, she also needs role models:

Here are a few sites relating people's Ouija Board experiences:

http://freakiest.ouijastories.ever.com/

http://www.greatdreams.com/ouija.htm

http://paranormal.lovetoknow.com/Ouija_ ... xperiences

http://www.graveaddiction.com/ouija.html

I know we've had a few threads in the past about "talking boards". And I tend to find this topic very interesting and controversial. I flip flop back and forth about their veracity in the hands of the general population and have no real experience with them myself except for some half remembered childhood experiments with my cousins. I believe that "the game" left us rather flat and we went on to play Mousetrap or
Ker-Plunk, or Life or any number of late 60's / early '70's games instead. Ouija just languished in the basement.

Perhaps we were lucky nothing happened for us. But I do not discount their efficacy out of hand simply because of my brief and soon aborted childhood attempts.

Later in life my occult prone pals and I never touched one though the temptation was there. Instead we devised more open ended experiments using a variety of tools and psychedelics which provided us with awe-inspiring free from narratives. Difficult for me to explain. But I think it is of note that we had some aversion to using Parker Brother's tools.

That's the entire thing. Its just a tool. They're all just tools: ouija, tarot, crystals, etc. etc. etc. - just tools. By themselves they are nothing. In most hands they are nothing. In some hands they are abused to gain profit through fakery, but in other hands they can be dangerous. Like guns, its all in the matter of how you use it - and also like guns, you can have a pistol in the house and it might be loaded, then the wrong person can gets ahold of it and boom! Its just far, far too simple to say, "No, this is all fake," as well as, "No, this is all real," when the answer lies somewhere in between.
