WTF are you saying, dude? It's not illegal to film the Jefferson Memorial. It is, however, illegal to boogie down there. Get it?

And the cops did shut down the Memorial to cameras, and closed it to complete the arrests.

WTF are you saying, dude? I've made my speculation clear. The cops could have been tipped off that "oh yeah some Internet personality is coming down today to get him and his friends arrested for a bit". "Since we're the 'dizney for kidz' we're gonna go along". Make it look good. But not too harsh. That's all I have said. I spoke about the viral nature of shit too. Do you really think the average viral viewer is going to delve this deep into this shit? No. They won't. They just see it as an admixture of dancing, law, crime, violence, US history and etc.

Honestly, I still can't figure it out. But it's probably just me.

BTW, the woman arrested for slow dancing at the beginning is Medea Benjamin, founder of Code Pink.

Funny, I thought that looked like her, but too young. :) Maybe dancing does that.

"LOL" in a nice way. I'm sure it's me. Just the crosses we bear. It's all good.

I recognized her too.

At first glance, I thought this was one of those instances where they should pick their battles more wisely. But then again, it seems to have succeeded in being a clever stunt to elicit the stupidity of the police response (and the brutality of it), and at least some media coverage as a result (RawStory had it as their main headline yesterday, FWIW). Adam Kokesh is pretty convincing in this interview on RT, and he's planning another dance-in this coming Saturday.

I've only watched the first bit, but what the dude said on the Alex Jones show helps to confirm my speculation of "make a point of it boys but don't be too harsh". I now think, the guy who has the show is legit and it was an awesome demonstration of fascist retardedness, but don't "they" too know how retarded they are? Perhaps they were just "unprepared" for such an act. And moreover, these cops need to learn their history and then another lesson in irony. But then they wouldn't be cops then would they?

Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" could also be amended to "Dancing in the Park".

Not sure why that one cop had to throat clutch a guy who is already on the ground.

Without knowing what preceded this it is hard to discern WTF was really going down, but from what appears in this vid I'd have to chalk this up to a numbskull waste of civil disobedience that serves only to show us that cops are over trained in take downs and death grips and undertrained when it comes to dealing with difficult people who are NOT criminals.

Dancing in Jefferson Memorial? Our Founding Father would approve.

We can’t know for sure what Thomas Jefferson would have thought of the arrests Saturday of five people who were dancing in his memorial. According to reports, they were grooving in silence to protest an earlier court ruling banning dance within the Jefferson Memorial.

The arrests sparked outrage galore, complete with viral videos on YouTube of the forceful police response. But overlooked is the utter irony of outlawing dance in the name of the third president. After all, this is the man who netted this nation a dance heritage with the Louisiana Purchase.
Jefferson had long been fond of dancing — he was a fiddler and used to play duets with that other Virginia-born Founding Father, Patrick Henry. He was known to play his violin for parties at the White House. At one Christmas bash there in 1805, the president — a leader through and through — became Dancemaster in Chief by fiddling for the dancing of his six young grandchildren and 100 of their friends.

And why not? Dancing, Jefferson wrote, “is a healthy exercise, elegant and very attractive for young people.”

Will thousands dance today at the Jefferson Memorial?
Saturday - 6/4/2011, 9:41am ET

WASHINGTON - Another demonstration in protest of the no dancing policy at the Jefferson Memorial will be held Saturday.

Last week about a dozen protetors showed up at the memorial, but more than 3,000 people have said they would show up to the Dance Party @ TJ's Facebook event. How many of those will actually show up is still to be seen.

The organizers say the dancing will start exactly at 12 p.m.

Last Saturday, five people were arrested by U.S. Park Police for dancing in the memorial.

In April 2008, a group of less than 20 young people came to the memorial as part of a flash mob where they would dance to music played through their headphones.

U.S. Park Police then told the dancers to leave, and eventually arrested one woman on misdemeanor charges, Mary Oberwetter.

Oberwetter fought the charges in court, arguing that dancing was protected free speech, and noting that groups of noisy school children are routine at the memorial.

She lost that case, with the courts agreeing that the U.S. Park service has a duty to maintain decorum at the nation's monuments, and no demonstrations are allowed inside the monuments.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld the earlier decision.

Dancing protesters return to Jefferson Memorial

Saturday - 6/4/2011, 4:14pm ET

WASHINGTON - US Park Police closed a portion of the Jefferson Memorial after 50 people began to dance around the statue Saturday.
The dancers protested a recent court decision to uphold a ban on dancing at the memorial.

"The people are rising up," one person shouted.
No one was arrested at Saturday's event.

More than 3,000 people said they would show up to the Dance Party @ TJ's Facebook event.
Shaun Haugh traveled all the way from North Carolina to protest. He said Thomas Jefferson would be astonished at how the dancers are being treated.
"The idea that you can't dance where you want to is something that would have driven him crazy," he said.
It is illegal to dance around the rotunda of the Jefferson Memorial. But people are allowed to dance on the steps of the monument.
Leaders of the dance movement said the protests are not just about the right to dance in a public place, but more so about the problems they see with the government and police.

"I'm upset the deficit is out of control, that veterans are being murdered by police force here, and that the constitution is being completely ignored by people who swear an oath here in Washington," said Adam Kokesh, one of the leaders of Saturday's event.
