I forget who the comic was... "And we remember that day when Rosa Parks was ordered to give up her seat to a white man on the bus.... And how times have CHANGED. Damn, you don't never see a white man on the bus."

I'm on the bus with you, my friend. I don't drive. Oil is the devils's pawprint on this earth. It's amazing when you consider how it's wrecked literally fucking everything. And besides, I have had much better conversations at the bus stop than I have ever had at any faculty lounge, cocktail bar or dinner party. Blessings your way.

Thanks you, NeonLX! This thread is restoring my faith in humanity.

I'm on the bus with the rest of you guys as far as public transportation is concerned. Healing humanity and the environment go hand in hand; try to separate the two and you end up with the society we are currently enduring.

I had some other sage comment to make, but I can't remember it. You all have said so much on the subject that is eloquent enough. Way to make RI shine today!

I have far less than I did earlier this year, but I'm far happier.

Well you've had a full on time since I was last here. I'm glad things are kind of working out.

That was a great story. Well done.

Very few buses where i live. We'd be stuck here without vehicles that move over 50 km hour. But when I lived in a city (20 years ago) I'd always use public transport where I could. Mind you round here we wave to people we know in other cars/trucks. That doesn't happen in big cities very often. Its as if people use their cars in a city to shield themselves from other people.

I grew up in a rural area where everyone waved to everyone else. The only people who wouldn't wave were "out of towners" who didn't know any better.

People *do* use their vehicles as shields against others. I'm cynical, so I think that the more expensive and showy the vehicle is, the more insulated the person owning it wants to be. About 1/2 mile from where I live, there is the largest concentration of high-end petrol machines: huge Mercedes, Infiniti, Lexus SUVs, and even a Rolls Royce or two. I saw some Porsche *sedan* on my walk to work this a.m. Didn't even know Porsche made something with 4 doors.

My parents live in a little village about 20 miles out of town, population ~ 1500. I visit frequently. No one used to lock their doors at night. Many still don't. I don't lock my car doors when I am there. The worst crime that has happened there in the last ten years were some kids breaking into the liquor store. Who knows what goes on behind the picket fence facades, but as far as street crime goes, there is none. There is a sense of community. People watch each others lives, watch out for each others children, stop and chat in the local Piggly Wiggly about the christmas lights at their church and the fortunes of the high school basketball team. Everybody knows everybody. It's fuckin' Mayberry. Except, it's insular, reactionary and beneath the veneer anti-human. There is one African American that lives in town. One. Outsiders are regarded with slitted eyes and god forbid you have dark skin or look like a ferner or a liberal. These are law abiding, church going, tax paying citizens. God bless the USA. They voted for Walker, they get their news and opinion from Hannity and O'reilly and they sleep well at night.

You and I live in the same town. I used to live in your old neighborhood. You know from correspondence with me what I do for a living. I live on the south side of town now in a poor working class neighborhood. The houses were built in the 50's. Not more than 6 blocks from here is a part of the town notorious for crime. That criminal element has been creeping this way over the last couple of years. My house was broken into 3 months ago. Long story. I installed motion sensor lights, beefed up all the locks, installed alarms on the doors and windows. I have weapons stashed around the house. I'm pretty sure where the burglars came from and the odds are very high they are african american. It's a constant battle within me to maintain my ideals, at least in my actions and words, if not in the privacy of my own thoughts. I went through a mild form of ptsd after the break in and I'll never be the same. I don't want to live here anymore. I don't want to live in the city anymore. My life has become an endless siege mentality. Any stranger in the neighborhood is possibly the enemy. In fact the thieves almost certainly came from a neighbors house, so even the neighbors are under suspicion, although we have reached out to trusted neighbors to keep an eye out. The neighborhood knows we are being cased and there is a threat and though we have a vested interest in watching each others backs, and we do, nonetheless it seems we've all battened down the hatches and keep to ourselves even more. For sale signs have gone up. I want the hell out of here.

The beauty of my community is that its full of hippies, greenies and what you'd call liberals as well as the rednecks. Many people round here at the very least supplement their income by growing weed, and every year we get chopper raids and the associated cop invasions. So even the rednecks get the sense of being under siege. A similar us against them mentality, but cos the locals are so diverse, and we do get lots of tourists it isn't as insular and inward looking as many rural communities.

That really is completely understandable. Having your house broken into and your stuff taken is not nice. it leaves a horrible feeling of betrayal and hurt. Sometimes you need to give in to your anger and let it out no matter how unreasonable it seems to your "better nature".

Just remember that your "better nature" is the thing you don't want to lose by indulging the anger and grief all the time. Its human to get upset and angry when you get fucked over. Its hard not to let it rule your life too. Especially when its an ongoing threat.

Also, maybe you should move out of the city.

Sigh. Circumstances will prevent that for some time to come, but that is the plan. About a month ago me and my woman took a little vacation. I found cabins for rent on a 70 acre farm in Missouri. Pot belly wood burning stove for heat, solar shower, 55 gallon drum and gravity feed for water, propane for a stove, electricity for a fridge, 16' x 14' with a loft for sleeping, outhouse for morning constitutional. That's all I really need man. We found these people through Air BNB. Super nice people. Brought us a couple of ribeyes and a half a dozen eggs from their chickens. Redneck as hell. Poorest county in Missouri. Northern section of the Ozarks. I'm sure there is plenty of pot grown in the hills and the hollers. Virtually every other residence is some sort of collection of dilapidated 'buildings', shacks, trailers, broken down buses and scattered debris. The poverty is a little shocking, but these are not by and large desperate people. They live off the land. In many respects they are better off than me and quite possibly happier. And fuck if the animals aren't smarter. Dogs are such different critters when they are free to be dogs.

I certainly get it too, BPH. There are times at the transfer points in this city where I'm the only cracker on the platform as I wait for the next bus. I'll admit to feeling a bit edgy. I've been shoved around a few times and a high school kid tried to steal my phone. I'm not a huge guy, but my face is shaggy. For whatever reason, that seems to give me a pass. Or at least it has up to this point.

I'm on the north side, which has become a lot like the south side. I'm happy to be living in an apartment building, with a locked door into the building.

When I was a kid growing up in a place even Mayberrier than where your folks are, we would leave the house unlocked and the keys in the car. If someone wanted to borrow the car, they were free to do so. You could rely on the locals to return in with a full tank of gas. "Hey, there goes Ed's car, but Ed ain't driving it". People would come and go from the house all day long, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes with my parents.

I miss that. The world I live in now is far more tense. But I don't want to become more tense myself. It's fucking tough not to want to head for the hills, and I probably would/will if I get the chance. But that may not happen. The divorce should be finalized next week.

Trying to Stay Human in an Age of Shame

WRITTEN BY CHRIS FLOYD

In a time of national shame, in an age soaked in pervasive evil, a search, a plea to find a way to stay human …

tell me I am still worthy to stand in the sun
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.
