Joey the Liar; SPEAKER PELOSI; WEBB ? VICTORY IN VA?

Postby Wolfmoon Lady » Wed Nov 08, 2006 2:48 am

Sad about Lamont's early concession here in CT. My roomie asked why didn't he wait until all the votes were in? No answers for her. That said, I'm HOWLING with joy over Dems taking the House:

SPEAKER PELOSI! 1st woman to lead House. Huzzah!

Watching VA -- just saw this on Daily Kos:

WEBB DECLARES VICTORY!!! (I am NOT kidding!)

Wow,another moderate Repub lost

Postby chiggerbit » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:50 am

Another "I can't believe it!" Moderate incumbent Republican Leach lost here in Iowa. I half-way liked him, just for his vote against the Iraq war. I can't tell you how serious I think this is that it's moderate Republicans who seem to have done a good share of losing. This will significantly polarize Congressional Republicans, pull them even further right, if possible. Problem is that many of the new Dems who won are more conservative, which might mean that they will be more willing to compromise with the Repuglies.

Pelosi

Postby chiggerbit » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:56 am

Won't this make Pelosi third in line for the Presidency?

Yes. She'll be third in line for the Presidency.

I was listening to Smirking Chimpy on MSNBC denigrating the historicity of her win by saying he had "offered to send some Republican decoraters over to help her choose the right drapes for her new offices." Asswipe!

Except the real meaning of a conservative is isolationist, among other things. Of course, in the Bizzaro-political spectrum of the U.S., left is right, and right is left (no differences beneath those fake exteriors).

Truth vs Illusion

Postby BlueCherub » Wed Nov 08, 2006 4:22 pm

Ah yes, Truth prevails here on RI. I was swept up in all the hoopla elsewhere only to come here and see that it's all more than likely an illusion. Some (or all?) of the dem candidates that won are actually repubs in sheeps clothing. Sigh. Just when I was feeling a bit of hope...reality crashes in.

Well....

Postby chiggerbit » Wed Nov 08, 2006 5:11 pm

....not so fast. From Taegan Goddard's Political Wire:

http://politicalwire.com/

A Regional Realignment
Thomas Schaller, author of Whistling Past Dixie: How Democrats Can Win Without the South, sent Political Wire this analysis of the midterm results several hours before the polls even closed yesterday.

There seems to be a developing narrative which suggests that expected Democratic victories this year are somehow the result of Democrats "running as conservatives." Republicans, and conservative Republicans in particular, have an obvious stake in perpetuating such a narrative. But it is patently untrue.

Pull back the lens and what appears to be happening this year is a regional-ideological partisan correction in which Rockefeller-Ford Republicans are purged from the NE/NW Rust Belt, and prairie progressives pick off selected seats in the Far West. The regional realignment over the past 40 years, which slowly converted Dixiecrats into Republicans, has now entered its final stage, as voters north of the Mason-Dixon line and west of the Mississippi provide a countervailing response to the southern-led Republican majority.

This transformation is occurring at the Senate, House and gubernatorial levels. Indeed, because Rust Belt Republicans will be replaced by progressive Democrats, regardless of the final totals tonight, the 110th Congress, in both chambers, will become more progressive as the Democratic shares grow and less conservative as the Republican shares shrink. As just one indication of this trend, consider this stunning fact: If Pelosi gets her majority, for the first time in 52 years, the party with a minority of House seats in the South will the majority party chamberwide.

On the occasion of the new Forum, after being a long-time lurker. This is a great (if intimidating!) community of thinkers and writers. I may even posit the occasional question or opinion... please be gentle.

Trying.....to remember what rdr indirectly called me in my earliest days posting here. Was it Barney Fife-type? Something like. (Where's my great big smacking kiss emoticon when I need it, anyway?)
