Ellis's father was Alexander (Sandy) Ellis, an insurance executive in Boston, who studied at Yale University. His mother is Nancy Bush Ellis, a sister of former President George H. W. Bush. Ellis is married to Susan Smith Ellis, the CEO of (RED)
.

Huh? That almost sounds like incest.

Nevermind, I take it that that's her married name.

Here is a story that just came out:

December 4, 2009

Court: Suspect will return to face charges

Hughes accused of conspiracy, murder in 1981 Rancho Mirage triple homicide

Monica Torline
The Desert Sun

James “Jimmy” Hughes, the only suspect to be arrested in a 1981 Rancho Mirage triple homicide known as the “Octopus murders,” will return to California to face charges of conspiracy and murder.

Hughes, 52, appeared at his extradition hearing Thursday in Florida via closed circuit television from a Miami-Dade County jail. He did not speak during the proceedings. His attorney said he was not fighting the extradition.

Assistant State Attorney Barbara Pineiro says Hughes will be sent back to California within 30 days. Local authorities are not releasing information about when he will return to Riverside County.

“We're going to keep it completely under wraps for officer safety,” said Riverside County sheriff's Det. John Powers, the lead investigator on the case.

Hughes faces one count of conspiracy and three counts of murder in connection with the killings of Cabazon Band of Mission Indians tribal leader Fred Alvarez, housemate Patricia Castro and friend Ralph Boger. They were all shot behind the Rancho Mirage home where Alvarez lived.

The 28-year-old case is referred to as the “Octopus murders” because of complex connections between the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, government agencies and a list of people rumored to be involved around the time of the killings.

Hughes was arrested on Sept. 26 at Miami International Airport. He was on his way to Honduras, where he runs a mission.

“I'm extremely happy he's going to be here in California where he belongs,” Powers said, adding that he is eager for the case to proceed.

Rachel Begley — who was 13 when her father, Boger, was killed — has partnered with police to investigate the case. She found the evidence police needed for Hughes' arrest, the first in decades-old case.

Begley, who now lives in the Louisville, Ky., area, was cautious Thursday, saying that police have built a solid case against Hughes but that she expects the case to be long delayed.

“I've been working really hard to try to get the ball rolling the whole time he's been in Florida, so it's nice that it's finally moving, but I don't expect this will be the end of the stalling,” she said.

Complaint details

Hughes is accused of conspiring with others, including the late John Philip Nichols, his son John Paul Nichols and Glen Heggstad, to prevent Alvarez from revealing illegal activities at the Cabazon Indian Reservation in 1981, according to the extradition complaint.

While Nichols and Heggstad are listed as co-conspirators on the complaint, neither has been charged. Their attorneys did not return calls for comment Thursday.

Powers has said more charges could come in the case, and he has continued to collect evidence and conduct interviews to find out who else might have been involved in the 1981 slayings.

“A big part of that will be talking to Jimmy when he gets back here,” he said Thursday.

Begley, too, said she has continued pursuing the case.

“I'm not even close to done investigating. Nowhere close to done,” she said.

Powers will personally pick up Hughes from Florida and said the California Attorney General's Office asked that he not release details about the trip.

State prosecutors are handling the case because Hughes is related to Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco.

Hughes likely will be booked in a Riverside jail and later be transported to Indio, where his case will be heard, Powers said.

Another extradition hearing is scheduled for Jan. 5 in Florida, according to the Miami- Dade County Clerk of Courts.

Terry Chavez, spokeswoman for Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, said the hearing is a formality to make sure that a defendant has been picked up following a judge's order for extradition.

“We don't like to just let the ball drop,” she said.

Here is Virginia McCullough's report on the status of the extradition:

As of this morning Jimmy Hughes is still in Metro West, Miami-Dade Pre-Trial Detention Center. He has not been extradited to CA yet.

It cracks me up that VM thinks she has some 'inside info' on the situation LOL. What VM does is calls the clerks office in Miami to get her info, other than that, she knows exactly what everyone else knows. Guess what, you guys could call the clerks office too claiming to be a journalist and get the same info whooo hoo.
Doogie, for safety reasons, nobody will know when the extradition will take place until after it happens.

That makes sense. I was just curious if the transfer had occurred yet, not questioning when it was to happen.
