According to authorities, the latest details to emerge out of the Sandy Hook investigation indicate that Lanza, 20, rigged his rifle to allow him to cause maximum killings.

The gunman, who is responsible for the death of 20 students and six adults, reportedly taped two cartridge magazines to his .223 caliber rifle so he could reload as quickly as possible and continue his killing spree, the Telegraph reported.

Wayne Carver, the Connecticut medical examiner, said the technique is known as "jungle taping" and explains how Lanza managed to kill 26 victims at a school in a matter of minutes. .

Computer hard drive destroyed:

FBI agents have also confirmed that Lanza destroyed his computer hard-drive prior to the shootings. It is another indication that this was a premeditated attack, and that Lanza had planned the shooting all out in advance, authorities believe.

Say what you will, he was one ice-cold hardassed muthafucka, that Adam Lanza. No nerd he. James Bond, eat your heart out.

I suppose there's just no fathoming the profoundly dark abyss that is the human heart. Certainly I am now persuaded that every human being I encounter is capable of terrible, unmotivated, murderous evil at the drop of a hat, and I can't imagine what possible interest a protofascist militaristic regime running a declining plutocratic empire might have in convincing me of that fact.

What's on TV?

Yes, backstories are getting thinner and thinner, and there doesn't seem to be much but an echo of Hamlet sustaining this one. But for all that no one seems to be having any trouble drinking deeply at the well of hate based on motives of their own devising. Maybe that's the next wave: do it-yourself backstories, like DYI yogurt, with mix-n-match bio details (kindergarten teacher / former trader / gold-digging divorcée) so everybody gets just the villain they need to enjoy the latest calamity. :tongout

Chilling new blog post by CopyCat Effect
http://copycateffect.blogspot.com/2012/12/No28.html

I'm not saying it's up there with classic RI, but it gave me the creeps in that Jack Nicholson photograph ending of Shining kind of way.
He talks about how Lanza's mom had just came from the infamous Bretton Woods hotel. Worrisome syncs pointing toward psychos
wanting to commit violence at a sporting event and a number of odd things swirling around.

Also speculation as to whether Lanza's mother was a doomsday prepper

Most brilliant analogy of the week:) If anything, this latest event has served as a cipher/tea leaves/blank projection canvas for everyone out there.
It's just strange, that just like the bin Laden raid details, virtually everything that was reported was false.

For days they insisted his mom was a teacher there. That he used two hand guns and kept the bushmaster in his car. That all the kids killed were in one classroom.

Top Conservative Publication: Shooting Occurred Because Women Ran The School
By Zack Beauchamp on Dec 19, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Victoria Soto, 27-year-old teacher killed while protecting her students.
If there were fewer women and more “male aggression” in Sandy Hook Elementary School, the massacre there never would have taken place, according to a contribution to a leading conservative magazine.
National Review, whose in-house editorial suggested Newtown was the price of the Second Amendment, published a piece on Wednesday from anti-feminist Charlotte Allen suggesting the reason the shooter was able to kill so many students was because Newtown was a “feminized setting:”
There was not a single adult male on the school premises when the shooting occurred. In this school of 450 students, a sizeable number of whom were undoubtedly 11- and 12-year-old boys (it was a K–6 school), all the personnel — the teachers, the principal, the assistant principal, the school psychologist, the “reading specialist” — were female. There didn’t even seem to be a male janitor to heave his bucket at Adam Lanza’s knees. Women and small children are sitting ducks for mass-murderers. The principal, Dawn Hochsprung, seemed to have performed bravely. According to reports, she activated the school’s public-address system and also lunged at Lanza, before he shot her to death. Some of the teachers managed to save all or some of their charges by rushing them into closets or bathrooms. But in general, a feminized setting is a setting in which helpless passivity is the norm. Male aggression can be a good thing, as in protecting the weak — but it has been forced out of the culture of elementary schools and the education schools that train their personnel. Think of what Sandy Hook might have been like if a couple of male teachers who had played high-school football, or even some of the huskier 12-year-old boys, had converged on Lanza.
Via Jessica Valenti, who notes that this is extraordinarily “disrespectful to the female teachers and staff at Sandy Hook. Allen mentions their heroism as an anomalous aside rather than exceptional bravery that saved lives. The bravery of the women in Newtown – principal Dawn Hochsprung and psychologist Mary Sherlach who rushed the shooter before being killed, teacher Victoria Soto who died protecting her students, Kaitlin Roig and Abbey Clements who hid their students and calmed them – is remarkable.”
Allen went on to blame Lanza’s mother, saying “You simply can’t give a non-working, non-school-enrolled 20-year-old man free range of your home, much less your cache of weapons…Unfortunately, the idea of being an ‘adult’ and a ‘man’ once one has reached physical maturity seems to have faded out of our coddling culture.”
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Let me know if this has already been posted and I will delete. Chris Knowles of the Secret Sun weighs in with potent insight, as usual. At least this answered my main question about this case, "Why on Earth and Heaven and Hell would anyone teach their "mentally ill" child to use firearms? Links at original post.

Fearporn Kills, or Adam Lanza and TEOTWAWKI

This situation is not only difficult for me as a parent but also because, as longtime Secret Sun readers realize, I know what it's like to lose someone to gun violence and do so during the Christmas season.

But as investigators struggle to find a motive for the Sandy Hook massacre, I'd offer up a working theory for the event- that it was brought about by paranoid delusions about the so-called end of the Mayan long count calendar, a fast-approaching date which the "Doomsday Preppers" have been obsessed with.

The Doomsday movement is closely tied into elements on the far right, particularly the Religious Right. But survivalism is also closely associated with the militia movement and its front groups such as the Gun Owners of America, an organization whose founder Larry Pratt has called for (white) gun-owners to form leaderless cells based on the Guatemalan death squads of the 1980s.

The entire network of conspiracy radio hosts- nearly all of whom are closely tied to the far right- works hand-in-glove with survivalist hucksters. Sites like Raiders News Update essentially act as motivational propaganda for prepper salesmen (in Raiders case, for its sister site Survivor Mall).

However, with the Christian constituency of the survivor movement rapidly aging and losing its ability to sustain itself (outside of the radical racial fringe of the Christian Identity movement and related), born-salesmen like Horn eagerly embrace the kind of Neo-Theosophist apocalypticism that New Age gurus like Elizabeth Clare Prophet peddled.

Indeed, Raiders News burned a lot of bandwidth on the 2012 meme, to the point that Christian Right apocalypticism and New Age Left apocalypticism have synthesized into a toxic brew of fear, paranoia and proto-fascism- the Doomsday movement.

All of this came to mind when Adam Lanza's greasy-haired, wild-eyed aunt was tracked down in Illinois and revealed just what the Lanzas were up to in their quiet, isolated McMansion in the Connecticut foothills:

Marsha Lanza called Nancy Lanza "self-reliant."

"The only reason she would have guns," Marsha Lanza said, "was for self-defense."
Two law enforcement sources said the murder weapon was one of those guns, a semiautomatic rifle. The others were a pair of semiautomatic pistols. The mother of Newtown school massacre gunman Adam Lanza was a survivalist who was stockpiling food because she thought the world economy was on the verge of collapse. Nancy Lanza began hoarding food and water because she feared that the onging financial crisis was going to bring about the end of civilized society.

She reportedly became 'obsessed' with guns and taught Adam how to shoot, but on Friday in a grim twist he blasted her to death while she laid in her own bed. Law enforcement sources told the Hartford Courant that she had not gotten up - and could have even been asleep - when her son killed her.

The disclosure raises the prospect that Adam could have had the same apocalyptic views as his mother, and that she could have even encouraged them in him. The Mayan Apocalypse, which the ancient Mayan people thought would mark the end of the world, will supposedly take place on December 21, although it is not clear if Adam thought that was the case.

Here we see the grotesque Orwellian revisionist language of the modern Tea Party Right. The aunt says Nancy was "self-reliant", yet she lived on alimony paid by her millionaire ex-husband. The aunt says she kept automatic weapons for "self-defense", yet she lived in a virtually crime-free (and very well-policed) area. The aunt was clearly sympathetic to the survivalist delusion and uttered the usual bromides of the Right when asked about keeping automatic weapons out of the hands of the disturbed. She also contradicts herself when speaking of the paranoid isolation that neighbors had seen going on in the Lanza household.

With Adam suffering from neurological issues related to an apparently severe case of Aspergers (full disclosure: this author also scored very high on an Aspergers questionnaire, which shouldn't surprise readers of this site) and having no visible social life, it's highly likely he bonded with his mother and bought into her Doomsday delusions.

Her former sister-in-law Marsha said she had turned her home ‘into a fortress’. She added: ‘Nancy had a survivalist philosophy which is why she was stockpiling guns. She had them for defense. ‘She was stockpiling food. She grew up on a farm in New Hampshire. She was skilled with guns. We talked about preppers and preparing for the economy collapsing.’ Marsha added that her nephew had been raised by ‘kind, nurturing’ parents’. She said she last seen Adam in June but recalled nothing appeared out of the ordinary.

When I began to process all of this- survivalist Doomsday Preppers, computers, wealthy suburbs, marginalized, paranoid kid, corporate bigwig father- I was suddenly reminded of an episode of Millennium that I had written about here a few months back.

It hit me like a ton of bricks- this event bore a striking similarity to the plot of 'TEOTWAWKI', written by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz (you can read the transcript here). Here's a brief summary from a MM fanpage.

After a fatal shooting during a high school basketball game, Frank Black, Emma Hollis, and Special Agent Barry Baldwin travel to Seattle to become involved in an investigation that will soon lead to a survivalist group supported by a high-brow computer corporation. It soon becomes evident that this group is so frightened of the predicted Y2K computer meltdown that they're stockpiling food and weapons in preparation for Armageddon and willing to kill anyone, including their own children, in order to ensure their own survival.

The shooting is during a pep rally, not a game and the death count is lower and the kids are older. The shooter here is a jock rather than a nerd. ( a curious choice in normal circumstances, but makes sense in the context of the paranoia being shown). But not even a show like Millennium- as brutal as it was- could ever imagine something so horrific as the Sandy Hook massacre. But so much else is so striking, in a dream-logic way.

Left: Ryan Lanza Right: Shooter from 'Teotwawki'

• The shooter is described as "numb" and "uncommunicative", terms that have been used to describe Lanza (who apparently suffered from a dangerous condition in which he was unable to feel physical pain).

• The shooter's father is a high-level executive and his mother is gripped by apocalypse fever.

• The shootings are related to a hoaxed apocalypse (the y2K hoax, as opposed to the y2012K hoax) with which the shooter has become obsessed.

• Kids on the Internet plays a central role in the action in 'TEOTWAWKI', (still very much a novelty in 1998 when the episode aired) and Adam Lanza used to have LAN parties at his house for his school's computer club.

I'm sure my eagle-eyed viewers will find more.

Of course, this isn't the first time a Carter/Spotnitz script foreshadowed real-life events. The most well-known is the Lone Gunmen 9/11 pilot (which Doomsday Preppers and other extremists claim was an example of the non-existent "Revelation of the Method", an imaginary "ancient" doctrine culled from the teachings of a distinctly contemporary Neo-Nazi) but an even more remarkable example is Carter's Lone Gunmen script which spelled out the fall of Sen. John Edwards several years before any of it had even gone down. I had my own foreshadowing of a Carter/Spotnitz script several years before the fact.

And the very same day the horror at Sandy Hook was unfolding, yet another Millennium script was quietly unfolding in the news, when a distinguished medical journal confirmed the then-unthinkable theory put forth in 'Collateral Damage', that Gulf War Syndrome was the result of the US bombing of an Iraqi nerve gas depot. I wrote about "Collateral Damage' in the same post I wrote about TEOTWAKI.

It could very well be that there were dissident elements in the intelligence community feeding Carter suppressed information to bypass the tight grip their bosses have on the media- mainstream and alternative. Indeed, the theories that GOP disinfo agent Alex Jones spouts about it don't even make sense, never mind have any real evidence to support them. Especially when you actually watch the episode and not just 5 second clips on some conspiracy site.

But at the same time there's so much weirdness at work that there are obviously other forces at work. And that's a reality that scares the Doomsday crowd more than anything else.

Fascists are prone to masking their agenda, but always show their hand once you get them talking. If you run across a New Ager who leavens his rap with Prison Planet headlines, or a hippie who's forever alluding to a mysterious "them", you'll find their true agenda will surface rather quickly once you get them talking. Many of them are often Fundies on parole (or Rumspringa) and you'll find that the truly weird terrifies them.

In order to cope with their terror, they'll cite the easily-disproven disinformation spread by other far right figures like Fritz Springmeier and lifelong Naval Intelligence asset Bill Cooper. Everything is a 'false flag' or similar, no matter if there's a single shred of evidence to back it up. In fact, it's precisely the lack of any evidence that proves the theory in the apocalyptic mind.

And of course, it is exactly that apocalyptic mindset to which we may well lay the massacre of the innocents in Newtown at the feet of.

I can't help but think that 12/21/2012 was the stressor here. Did Lanza feel that nothing mattered anymore in light of the coming apocalypse? Or was he- in his warped calculus- trying to actually spare these babies the horrors of his imaginary apocalypse?

There's another Millennium episode along those lines, '19:19'. Here's a brief synopsis:

Frank Black, Peter Watts, and Lara Means race against time to locate a busload of kidnapped children who have been buried alive in a quarry by a prophecy dictating madman who believes that World War III has begun and he is the one destined to carry out the Book of Revelation's instructions.

In that episode, it turns out the madmen had actually protected the children from a tornado. Was there a similar impulse in Lanza's misfiring synapses- that he was sparing the children from a greater horror? That may well emerge as investigators sift through the Lanza home.

It's an unhappy reality how much Millennium seems to have prophesied our times (and The X-Files as well). It could well be why Chris Carter has become such a whipping boy for the Cheetos 'n' Hentai set out there in the fanboy world. They're as terrified- in their own way- as the Apocalyptics. They run to the cold comforts of nihilism instead of Fundamentalism. But the two are in fact reductionist mirror images of each other.

UPDATE: Revelations that Lanza was a vegan because he didn't want to hurt animals may bolster my theory that he somehow wanted to spare the children from a great horror on "Doomsday." But then again Hitler was a vegetarian so who knows?

Just a quick post/comment in regard to the possible 'actor' on page 13 and comments that followed.

He may be an actor or whatever, but this video shows nothing. I discount it and say hogwash.

As to why I say this- well, I could see myself behaving that way. My take...

Dude was nervous and had stage fright. I one had to give testimony on a rape case. In fact, I made the 911 call.
I think I probably 'acted' that way. I was real, I made the call and prevented the act, but when I got on the stand, I bet I came across that way.

Adam Lanza's Motive: Did Fear Of Being Committed Lead To Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting?
Nancy Lanza, the mother of the Sandy Hook shooter, was in the process of having her son committed to a psychiatric facility when he went on the mass shooting spree, a lifelong family acquaintance told Fox News.

A senior law enforcement official also confirmed that 20-year-old Lanza's anger over his mother's plan is being investigated as a possible motive for the Newtown shooting.

"From what I've been told, Adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed," said Joshua Flashman, 25, who grew up not far from where the shooting took place. "Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry. I think this could have been it, what set him off."

It's unclear whether Adam's mother, Nancy Lanza, was really filing the paperwork, because court officials say that such records are sealed. But she would have gone through a longer process to get legal rights to commit an adult to a hospital or psych ward against his will.

UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that an unidentified friend claims Adam was withdrawing from his mother -- and the world -- in the days leading up to the killings. The person, who claims to be close to Nancy Lanza, said that the mother took Adam to a psychiatrist, but wasn't planning on committing him to a facility. Neither report has been confirmed by named police sources.

Nancy Lanza reportedly volunteered with kindergartners at the school for several years. Flashman said that Adam "believed she cared more for the children than she did for him." On the day of the massacre, Nancy was Adam's first victim. Flashman told Fox News that Nancy was also good friends with the school's principal and psychologist, both of whom were killed during the incident.

Lanza had also reportedly cut off communication with his father, Peter, in 2010.

---
Peter Lanza -- Adam Lanza's father -- reportedly had almost no involvement in his son's life in the years leading up to the Sandy Hook shooting.

NBC News reports that Adam had cut off communications with Peter, refusing to see him, according to a source close to the family.

Peter and Nancy Lanza split in 2001 and in 2010, Peter started dating a new woman. The source said that's when Adam stopped speaking with his dad. The father and son hadn't seen each other since then, according to the report.

On the day of the Sandy Hook massacre, Nancy Lanza was her son's first victim.

In the years leading up to that incident, Nancy pulled her son out of high school because of a disagreement with the Newtown Public School District, Nancy's sister-in-law tells ABC News.

"She wound up home-schooling him because she battled with the school district," Marsha Lanza said.

It's unclear what Nancy Lanza and the school district butted heads over.

Paula Levy, a divorce mediator who worked with the Lanza, said they both worried about caring for their son.

"The only two things I remember them saying is that she really didn't like to leave him alone, and I know they went out of their way to accommodate him," Levy said.

EXCLUSIVE: Inside the mind of Newtown killer Adam Lanza; he ‘was like a ghost’
His mother spotted his precipitous withdrawal before he went on his rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School. ‘He didn’t understand why she wanted him to go out into the world. She told me she couldn’t reach him — and she was worried,’ says a family friend.

"Teacher cradled and protected special needs six year old"

When Adam Lanza’s rampage at Sandy Hook was over, authorities found 6-year-old Dylan Hockley “wrapped in the arms” of Murphy, his special-education teacher, the child’s parents said in a statement.

"We take great comfort in knowing that Dylan was not alone when he died,” they said. “Dylan loved Mrs. Murphy so much and pointed at her picture on our refrigerator every day."

No RI interpretation...just, reading that. I feel a very long vacuum of emptyness. And that conservative commentator really said a lack of "manlyness" or whatever? Others saying "our allowing of homosexuality and abortion" brought on "God's wrath"? Geez.

I love how these Christian fundies believe their own fucking bearded leader in the sky is orchestrating these events. Makes you wonder what "God" they are really worshipping.

TRIGGER WARNING

The following is pure speculation and doesn't add much to the conversation, and there's only a thin chance that it's accurate. I have no background in psychology, nutrition, or health.

I attended a six-week inpatient program at one of the top eating disorder facilities in the country as a support person, was in a long relationship with a person who suffered from eating disorders for over half her life, and took part in many activist campaigns with her surrounding eating disorders, so I have some experience with the subject. I associate the swelling around his lower cheeks relative to his earlier photos as one possible symptom of bulimia. The parotid glands (the area that appears swollen in the photo below) can become swollen due to purging: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15202753

Bulimia in boys and men is fairly rare, though slowly becoming more commonly diagnosed in recent years. As far as I know, though the causes and factors leading to bulimia in boys and men can be similar to those for females, there's no evidence that some of the more prevalent causes (such as sports performance) are present in Lanza's case.
