eilhu
pick the 100 top largest cities in the world. let's go out on a limb here and say they have an average of 5 million rooftops. why is there not a two foot solar panel on each one trickle-feeding the grid? why is there not a two foot windmill right beside doing the same thing? why does every moving water course in proximity to the grid with a bridge piling in it not have a turbine anchored to it doing the same thing? why so many lightbulbs (enter the poisonous mercury ones exclusively, thanks gov!) and so few skylights? free energy to be harvested? ...

I couldn't be more in agreement with you here, well almost. I disagree with you about feeding the grid, as there is little need for such a grid. Local power grids limited to communities and cities, sure, but no need for national or regional grids, if this relatively energy free source was to be implemented.
See http://www.asrc.cestm.albany.edu/perez/

I've also argued here, I believe, (in another thread) for micro-hydro to be developed in all free-flowing plumbing. I've also denounced CFLs because of their mercury content, as being an inadequate & unnecessarily dangerous bridge to LED lighting.

I really don't appreciate the uniformed spreading incorrect or misleading information dealing with environmental issues and take issue with their doing so whenever possible and usually offer more correct information if I'm able to. Here is one such case wherein a poster mentioned that a can of tuna contained more mercury than a CFL, ( I am the contributor known as Sentinel)

You and others here may find this of some small interest, discovered when I retrieved the link above. (Click on the 'about' link for more.)

Ben, we know nothing about you, really, except that you are rude and poorly informed, at least on the topic of man's contribution to global warming, something you've refused to accept or admit. Until you decide to answer some of my questions, I will have nothing more to say to you, but be assured I will correct the unsubstantiated and factually incorrect information you're spreading whenever possible.

I should also say that though I am a most compassionate being, you and I are not friends, Ben D. Just need to correct you on that bit of misinformation, too, lest the casual observer believe otherwise.

Fyi, these statistics are not mine, they are from the climate scientists of team AGW!

I'm just the messenger presenting the them to see if any of you AGW believers had the slightest knowledge of how much warming has taken place so far,...and it seems you didn't.

DrEvil wrote:Yes, I agree with you Ben D! :shock2: On the 0.8C figure anyway.

That's because you know it's a fact!

Why don't you and Wintler2 persuade the recalcitrants to accept their humiliation and get with what is the most important fundamental statistic that IS NEEDED to be known before any future temperature projections can be calculated!

So with the exception of Wintler2 and DrEvil, will those who did not know the amount of global warming that has taken place since temperature recordings began, please explain why, now that you do know, why you don't just acknowledge the fact.

Global Warming = 0.08 degree C from 1880 to 2012

Try me, what part of the 0.8 degree of global warming do you want to question?

Global Warming = 0.8 degree C from 1880 to 2012

Planet Earth warms a mere 0.8 of one degree C and according to team CAGW, this is what this 0.8 degree C increase has caused...

Studies by scientists at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research have confirmed a link between the loss of Arctic sea ice and the development of high-pressure zones in the polar region, which influence wind patterns at lower latitudes further south. Scientists found that as the cap of sea ice is removed from the ocean, huge amounts of heat are released from the sea into the colder air above, causing the air to rise. Rising air destabilises the atmosphere and alters the difference in air pressure between the Arctic and more southerly regions, changing wind patterns.

Professor Rahmstorf said the Alfred Wegener study confirms earlier predictions from computer models by Vladimir Petoukhov of the Potsdam Institute, who forecast colder winters in western Europe as a result of melting sea ice.

Dr Petoukhov and his colleague Vladimir Semenov were among the first scientists to suggest a link between the loss of sea ice and colder winters in Europe. Their 2009 study simulated the effects of disappearing sea ice and found that for some years to come the loss will increase the chances of colder winters.

“Whoever thinks that the shrinking of some far-away sea ice won’t bother him could be wrong. There are complex interconnections in the climate system, and in the Barents-Kara Sea we might have discovered a powerful feedback mechanism,” Dr Petoukhov said.

Honestly, isn't it about time you became cognizant of the fact that the thread title is " Re:Global Warming, eh?"?

How would a thread on Global Warming be meaningful unless posters all understood what the actual figure was, which is 0.8 degree C.

In fact, those of you who posted on a 'Global Warming' thread without first even knowing what it was, were bound to be discombobulated.

Yes, global warming is ironically supposed to change the climate of England to that of Siberia.

This is why people have this insane denial, because they just can't handle this kind of thing. You know, mentally. Because where can you go? You don't know where you can go. It could truly be something you can't escape.

Now that's irony, that so called meaningless list is all about promoting CAGW /AGW,.. so you don't support your own side in this matter? :)
Is that because you can see how unsophisticated, exaggerated, and obvious the CAGW/AGW propaganda is when it is presented to you en masse in the context of actual GW,...0.8 degree C over 130 years?

But does the extent of that list also not raise questions in your mind,..like where is the money coming from that sponsors all these so called scientific studies behind the AGW claims of doom and gloom for the plant, animal, bird, fish, and human kingdoms all over the world. And why does MSM publish it? There seems to be an astronomical budget for keeping up the annual rounds of meetings and continuous publicity and marketing for the CAGW/AGW theme at all levels,... United Nations/Global, Regional. National, State, Cities and Town Councils, Education, NGOs, MSM, Defense, etc., etc..

What's more, that 'meaningless' list is meaningful evidence of the extent the owner barons of this world go to in their attempt to convince the already dumbed down public that a catastrophe is nigh unless they are prepared to give them permission to impose a carbon tax on human activity, among other things in the pipeline.

But enough of this inconsequential chit chat, I notice that the relevance and informativeness of the posts in the context of scientific GW continue to deteriorate, so unless the there is some miraculous increase in intuition of the respective posters, there is probably not much more to be said....(please take all my questions as rhetorical)...

namaste :)

The global warming issue presents a prime example of society's general inability and/or unwillingness to deal with basic statistics and interrelated systems in any sort of comprehensive manner. Specifically, Ben is making a reductio ad absurdum argument here. That is what I meant by "statistics for dummies".

When looking at a set of data over time you have to look at both what has happened over the entire period and what is happening now. If you put a bunch of zeros at the beginning of a string of numbers, your linear average might come out to something like .006 degrees C per year. That is a useful piece of information but it doesn't tell you anything about what is happening now. You have to look at all the data or you are just doing statistics for dummies. When wintler2 says "Anyway, if forced into a linear trend, sure 0.006C per annum. So what?" ... he is demonstrating that he understands something about statistics. This is the first question one must ask of this sort of data. "So what" is an extremely economical way of saying this is meaningless without more information.

That brings us to the .8 degree C change over the time period observed. This number is a useful data point but suffers from the same limitations of linear data as the above example with one additional question ... is .8 degrees a significant change over the observed time period? Scientists have gone to great lengths to answer this question and the general consensus is that this is a significant event. To the average person, .8 degree C means nothing. To a system as large and complex as the earth, it represents a tremendously large amount of retained heat over an extremely short period of time. And the warming has not been linear.

Beyond this, one needs to examine the data and ask lots of additional questions. For example, if the earth is warming, where would it be most likely to change? What would happen in the tropics? What would happen in the temperate regions? What would happen the closer you get to the poles? How do the various systems interact? Etc. The picture that has emerged in the real world is what would be expected based on the data. As the earth gradually warms up, things change. There is not a uniform warming everywhere because we are dealing with a large system. For example, England gets much colder winters because the Arctic sea ice is melting and changing the energy flows as noted in wintler2's post above.

Finally, we get to the question that concerns whether the warming is a result of human activity or some other factor. In this regard, you really need to sit down, take the long view, and ask yourself what the probability is that this data would so precisely fit the rise of industrial civilization and the exponential growth of the human population ... and yet actually be attributed to some other cause. Think about it. What is physically happening on the earth is far, far more important than any of the political and rhetorical machinations going on around this subject.

It's our fault for clicking on something titled like that and expecting any different.

What would you expect in threads with titles like:

I Gonna Beat You Upside Yo Head!

To Receive Righteous Asskicking, Click Here!!!

You're Stupid! Last Night Yo Mama Said So!

Etc.

Oh, and:

I WIN!!! Peace and Love Y'all. Ha ha, you're dead! Namaste!

Because that's what this is.

I suppose that someone with as savvy a sense of proportion as you have might think that BenD's one line is backed by dozens of think tanks and the list and content below was produced pure hearted intellects for no monetary compensation whatsoever.

Ah, and what the hell anyway, if the rubes will pay on trillions of dollars on fraudulent CDS's, then they can damn well pay a few more pennies to save the planet. Geez, benD, keep thinking like that and pretty soon you will believe that some Brussels bureaucrats are going to be appointed to take over from elected heads of state. BenD you are just fucking crazy.

Yeah never mind, I want my fear mongering to be backed by science.

Fucking pathetic people should not try their hands at wittery, unless they have some wit to begin with.
