Not a lot of new info, but insights from a close friend of the shooter: Loughner Friend Explains Alleged Gunman's Grudge Against Giffords. I'd hate to be this guy and spend the rest of my life wondering if people would be alive/uninjured if I'd just picked up the phone...

Sheriff's deputies had been to the Loughner home at least once before the attack, spokesman Jason Ogan said. He didn't know why or when the visit occurred, and said department lawyers were reviewing the paperwork and expected to release it Wednesday.
The visits were for nonviolent incidents, including a report by Jared Loughner of identity theft, a noise complaint and Amy Loughner's claim that someone had stolen her license plate sticker, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Officers stopped suspect on day of Ariz. shooting

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The suspect in a deadly Arizona shooting ran a red light and was stopped by a wildlife officer less than three hours before the attack that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department says an officer stopped Jared Loughner at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

The officer took Loughner's driver's license and vehicle registration information. Dispatchers checked the information and found no outstanding warrants on Loughner or his vehicle. He was given a verbal warning and released.

PHOENIX (AP) — In stories Jan. 9 and Jan. 10 about a congresswoman shot in Tucson, The Associated Press erroneously reported that the attorney for the shooting suspect previously represented Timothy McVeigh. The federal public defender's office in Arizona originally said Judy Clarke represented McVeigh but said Monday that it was not the case.

So besides the reports of the friend getting an early morning (late night) phone call from Jared, the father chasing his son into the desert that morning, we now have this:

Officers stopped suspect on day of Ariz. shooting

TUCSON, Ariz. – A wildlife officer pulled over the suspect in the assassination attempt against an Arizona congresswoman less than three hours before the deadly attack, authorities said Wednesday as they pieced together more details of a frenzied morning.

Jared Lougher ran a red light but was let off with a warning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, the Arizona Game and Fish Department said. The officer took Loughner's driver's license and vehicle registration information but found no outstanding warrants on Loughner or his vehicle.

Wildlife officers don't usually make traffic stops unless public safety is at risk, such as running a red light, the department said in a news release, which didn't say where the stop took place.

It's the latest evidence of Loughner's busy morning before police say he shot and killed six and wounded more than a dozen at a Tucson grocery store.

Also that morning, Loughner, 22, ran into the desert from his angry father, who was chasing his son after seeing him remove a black bag from the trunk of a family car, said Rick Kastigar, chief of the department's investigations bureau. Investigators are still searching for the bag.

The sheriff's deputies who swarmed the Loughners' house removed what they describe as evidence Loughner was targeting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who doctors said Tuesday was breathing on her own for the first time after taking a bullet to the forehead. Among the handwritten notes was one with the words "Die, bitch," which authorities told The Associated Press they believe was a reference to Giffords.

Investigators with the Pima County Sheriff's Department previously said they found handwritten notes in Loughner's safe reading "I planned ahead," "My assassination" and "Giffords." Capt. Chris Nanos said all the writings were either in an envelope or on a form letter Giffords' office sent him in 2007 after he signed in at one of her "Congress on Your Corner" events — the same kind of gathering where the massacre occurred.

Meanwhile, this city held a tribute to victims the eve of a presidential visit.

On Tuesday night, several hundred mourners filled a Tucson church for a public Mass to remember the slain and pray for the injured. As people filed in, nine young girls sang "Amazing Grace." The youngest victim of the attack, 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, was a member of that choir.

"I know she is singing with us tonight," said Tucson Bishop Gerald Kicanas, who presided over the service.

President Barack Obama visits Arizona Wednesday and will honor the victims in a speech to a rattled state and nation.

Okay, found the same info in a Washington Post article, with a wee bit of added info:

The only time the police visited because of the suspect was around 2006 or 2007, when the suspect called the authorities to report a case of identity theft. "Someone had used his name on MySpace or Facebook," Capt. Nanos said.

More pieces of the puzzle that seem confusing to me. What's confusing is the chronology. So he gets stopped that morning by an officer for running a red light. Officer takes his driver license and vehicle registration information, but found no outstanding warrants on Loughner or his vehicle. So why does he take a taxi to Safeway if he has a vehicle registered in his name and a license to drive it? Does the running away from his father into the desert incident occur before or after 7:30a.m.?

Also, looks like the taxi driver definitely was not apprehended at Thornydale and Magee Road:

TUCSON — Jared L. Loughner wanted change back from a $20 bill that he used to pay for a taxi ride to a Safeway store here, according to the manager of the taxi company.

Mr. Acosta said the driver, John Marino, who was questioned by the F.B.I. and Pima County sheriff’s officers at the taxi company on Sunday morning, was not taken into custody and has declined to speak to any reporters.

“He was like, ‘I really don’t need this,’ ” Mr. Acosta said.

snip

Mr. Acosta said that Mr. Marino noticed sirens coming in the opposite direction as he was heading to pick up his next fare on Saturday morning, but thought nothing of it until the next day, when security camera images showing him walking into the store with Mr. Loughner became part of the police investigation.

I don't think we can judge that alter any more than anything else about this case yet.

maybe he brought one of those stupid spirit skulls, stuck a few sigils of his own in it and left the oranges there (fresh) as food. And they shrivelled in 30 seconds. Do you that much about how magic works that you can rule that out?

ok on the face of it it looks like a farce or a misinterpretation and probably is. But on the face of it people were saying this guy was a died in the wool tea bagger.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think if he had more than just a passing interest in the occult, there would more more documented evidence in his online postings. I haven't seen any yet, but this case is still young.

Yeah, that brusqueness really rubbed me the wrong way too.

Looks like TPM is trying to resolve the timeline on what Laughner did when:

Loughner's Father Chased Alleged Shooter Into Desert On Saturday
Ryan J. Reilly | January 12, 2011, 1:30PM

In the hours before Jared Lee Loughner allegedly tried to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and killed six others, his father chased him into the desert as he carried a mysterious black bag in his hand, the Associated Press reported.

Police also said that at 7:30 a.m. that same morning, Loughner was stopped by a wildlife officer after he ran a red light but was let off with a warning, according to the AP. The officer, the Arizona Game and Fish Department said, looked at Loughner's driver's license and vehicle registration information but found no outstanding warrants on Loughner or his vehicle.

"He had a valid license, the car was registered, he had insurance," spokesman Jim Paxon told the AP. "He was warned and released because we had no probable cause to hold, or do an extensive search."

Neither AP account says what time the suspect's father, Randy Loughner, hopped into his truck and chased his 22-year-old son in the desert after the alleged shooter grabbed a black bag out of the trunk of a family car, and it isn't clear whether that confrontation came before or after Loughner was pulled over by the officer. Investigators, the AP said, are still searching for the bag.

Have you seen pictures of that cab driver? He looks like a typical Arizona desert rat, a misanthrope, a guy who doesn't like to be around people, probably took a job driving a cab because he couldn't find anything else.

Can you imagine how this guy is being hassled by the media right now? I'm sure he can't even leave his nicotine-stained apartment without having to run a gauntless of screaming camera people.

And his quote is basically out of context.

I wouldn't judge this guy for that one quote.

The U.S. government accuses a U.S.-born cleric in Yemen, Anwar al-Awlaki, of inspiring young Islamist militants to commit acts of terror around the world. The homeland security state has accused al-Awlaki’s websites of ideological responsibility for acts from the Fort Hood shooting to the so-called “underwear bomber” and the FedEx package plot. The Obama Administration has targeted him for assassination, and worked with the Yemeni military to bomb and launch missiles at Islamist insurgents that may or may not sympathize with Al Qaeda.

It speaks volumes to see how the U.S. government has treated the threat of Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen differently that the threat of David Wynn Miller in Wisconsin. Although the young Islamist militants may themselves be psychologically unstable and have done poorly in school, they are presented as ideologically influenced by al-Awlaki’s websites. Jared Loughner, on the other hand, is depicted as a mentally ill loner, even though David Wynn Miller actually admits that Loughner’s far-right perspectives closely match his website.

Funny how he doesn't mention how the Pentagon had Awlaki over for a special luncheon after 9/11, despite the fact he had been the spiritual advisor of the 9/11 hijackers and helped them from San Diego to Virginia; as well as was a known bin Laden operative since 1999.

His apparent connection to the September 11 attacks was one of many embarrassments for the FBI. Awlaki was under investigation in 1999, but the agency concluded he was not a danger and shut down the operation a year later. After the September 11 attacks, the FBI interviewed Awlaki four times, and one detective told the 9/11 Commission that he believed he “was at the centre of the 9/11 story”. It is believed that he kept the hijackers “spiritually focused”.

Wow. I remember Mcveigh being pulled over the day of the OKC attacks too(just, in the immediate aftermath)

http://motherjones.com/politics/2011/01 ... age?page=2

In college, Loughner became increasingly intrigued with "lucid dreaming," and he grew convinced that he could control his dreams, according to Tierney. In a series of rambling videos posted to his YouTube page, dreams are a frequent topic. In a video posted on December 15, Loughner writes, "My favorite activity is conscience dreaming: the greatest inspiration for my political business information. Some of you don't dream—sadly." In another video, he writes, "The population of dreamers in the United States of America is less than 5%!" Later in the same video he says, "I'm a sleepwalker—who turns off the alarm clock."
"When you realize you're dreaming, you can do anything, you can create anything."

Loughner believed that dreams could be a sort of alternative, Matrix-style reality, and "that when you realize you're dreaming, you can do anything, you can create anything," Tierney says. Loughner started his "dream journal" in an attempt to take more control of his dreams, his friend notes, and he kept this journal for over a year.

But it sounds like, from his ramblings and from friends that JLL was consumed with the idea of altering reality and 'dreaming'.

Thanks for that link. This stood out for me as running contrary to what NBC's Today Show was trying to paint this morning:

In October 2008, Tierney was living in Phoenix, and Loughner came to visit. They went to see a Mars Volta concert with friends, and Tierney was surprised when Loughner said he had quit partying "completely." Loughner, according to Tierney, said, "I'm going to lead a more healthy lifestyle, not smoke cigarettes or pot anymore, and I'm going to start working out." Tierney was happy for his friend: "I said, 'Dude, that's awesome.' And the next time I saw him he was 10 pounds lighter." Tierney never saw Loughner smoke marijuana again, and he was surprised at media reports that Loughner had been rejected from the military in 2009 for failing a drug test: "He was clean, clean. I saw him after that continuously. He would not do it."

After Loughner apparently gave up drugs and booze, "his theories got worse," Tierney says. "After he quit, he was just off the wall." And Loughner started to drift away from his group of friends about a year ago. By early 2010, dreaming had become Loughner's "waking life, his reality," Tierney says. "He sort of drifted off, didn't really care about hanging out with friends. He'd be sleeping a lot." Loughner's alternate reality was attractive, Tierney says. "He figured out he could fly." Loughner, according to Tierney, told his friends, "I'm so into it because I can create things and fly. I'm everything I'm not in this world."

Yet The Today Show went out of their way to point out his pot and salvia smoking. Can you say Reefer Madness?
