Plot summary for
Bug
(2006)

Having escaped her abusive ex-husband Goss (Harry Connick Jr.), recently released from state prison, Agnes (Ashley Judd), a lonely waitress with a tragic past moves into a sleazy, run-down motel and her lesbian co-worker R.C (Lynn Collins) introduces her to Gulf War veteran Peter (Michael Shannon), a peculiar, paranoiac drifter and they begin a tentative romance. However, things don't always seem as they appear and Agnes is about to experience a claustrophobic nightmare reality as the bugs begin to arrive... Directed by William Friedkin ("The Exorcist") and adapted by Trecy Letts from his hit off-Broadway play.

Sure, some people may be imagining things. Some people may just have staph infections. Some people are probably just speed freaks who went over the edge when they saw this on the local news or the internet.

However, the idea that that medical establishment or the science establishment in general is less constricted by establishment-ality than other forms of establishment (such as political, military or media) is laughable.

I just saw a "special report" about this on "Fox News at 10"- the local newscast, WTTG-TV, Wash. DC.)

(A first, for me, watching that show, btw...)

The pseudodoc was hilariously tarted up with the sort of horror-house soundtrack and grave-toned narration that gets so hilariously parodied on The Daily Show, but the suffering of the people was undeniably real, and no less than the Miami-Dade Health Department climed to be seriously investigating the claims.

As for the conclusions, let's just say they were tentative and equivocal. Given the overall alarmist tone, that is...

Good quote here:

"A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it." Max Planck

My husband says it more succinctly:

"Science advances one funeral at a time." --Dragon

It's real. It's in your hometown. It's not a B movie plot, but it may be a part of a plat... --MaryK

It's funny that you'd credit a quote to your husband that's usually (but perhaps wrongly) attributed to Max Planck -- immediately after quoting Max Planck.

MKM's 'husband Dragon' was banned from this site for spreading disinfo and thinly-veiled calls to violence against cellphone towers and buildings.

As to MKM, 'she' denies global warming, posts photos of chemtrails that are not chemtrails, asserts the same misinformation about what chemtrails are that Dragon did, believes in fairies, and promotes the non-existent technology of 'orgone accumulators' that Dragon did.

So don't expect accurate information from MKM. I'm not sure why she has not also been banned as a team mate of Dragon's.

And for my posting this 'she' will cry "thought police."

Go ahead, Hugh, say it twice. Repeating a lie will eventually result in it being accepted as truth. --MaryK

Are you paraphrasing Goebbels, or quoting your husband? You seem dedicated to turning your folie à deux inspired falsehoods and delusions into a folie à pluriel, so it's ironic that you'd use a maxim like that in your defense.

William Friedkin

Postby streeb » Wed May 30, 2007 8:51 pm

Hugh Manatee Wins said, about Bugs:

Hugh, director William Friedkin made his name with The French Connection and then The Exorcist. I've seen mention of an essay by John Judge that speculates that The Exorcist - written by a former Intelligence guy - was a psy-op designed to drive people back to the church. Whether the theory is plausible or not, I remember the profound effect that movie had on people when it was originally released.

Have you ever seen that essay, or know where I can find it?
