kick for renewed relevance - but go to the start if you're interested, later parts are uglier.

Excellent thread Jack, thanks for re-ressurecting it. I want you to know I am having my two high school kids read it, and I know my son will discuss these issues with his social studies class and teacher- who has shown himself to have an open mind in regards to "conspiracy " theories.
If you could just work Justin Bieber or Corey Monteith into the conversation my daughter might show some interest too.

I would posit that the Overton Window effect of the previous century has effectively made terminology like "liberal" and "conservative" the most roundly accepted forms of political philosophy. In other words: Most people identify with these terms and the extent to which they will criticize someone within their own ranks as being one or the other is based upon ones being insufficiently so: "a fake liberal" or "not conservative enough".

The same cannot be said for the popularity of the party titles "Democrat" and "Republican" (their firm grip on the electoral process notwithstanding). We read every day an increasing belief that "they are all the same, bought and paid for" etc., but the last couple of adult generations have no idea the extent to which liberalism and conservatism have actively contributed to the same overall project. The widely disseminated appendix "neo" has contributed a great deal to this in this century, as well.

Um.

Well, I can do this - is Hannah Montana out of date for your daughter's age? These things go so damn fast...

When my daughter was 13, Hannah Montana was the bee's knees. But at the lofty age of 17, my daughter sees Hannah as so "yesterday"--a complete has-been.

Heh. "Bee's knees". I'm so farking old.

My daughter views Led Zeppelin as something historical; probably at about the equivalent depth in time as WWI or the Protestant Reformation.

That's actually true, though. Led Zep is Big History.

My son loves bands that are basically note-for-note revivals of The Cure and the Talking Heads, among others, but when I say so he doesn't much care.

The kids I know are really into the classics like Led Zeppelin. Heck my son was into them, the Who, and CCR almost before he could talk.

But even now my stepdaughter and her peers are into anything and everything as long as they like it. The other day we heard Don Maclean's American Pie on the radio and she came home and downloaded it.

Nowadays she doesn't pay much attention to Miley Cyrus, although she has that one movie she did on the DVR. But that's probably as much being a sucker for Nick Sparks than anything.
