Our Dinner with Wells (a my dinner with andre homage)
we'd need a script, but each participant could write their own lines (exquisite corpse* style in 1st draft), get their own PoV across, nothing presented as unquestionably absolute.

anyway, it's a concept...

Oh man, that'd so rock. I half jokingly told some of the RI guys I met in Brooklyn the other day that I'd netflix a filmed version of our conversation. Be it Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Waking Life, My Dinner With Andre, The Big Kahuna, Tape, etc I have a soft spot for films that are almost entirely weighty conversation.

But I'm mildly intrigued by "Cabin." It's the only multiplex movie out right now that I might decide to watch in the theater. Though "Hunger Games" has its endorsers, I just can't do it.

Dogtooth, like Pontypool was one of those movies I heard strong recommendations from this forum, and which lived up to my expectations.

The safeway giffords shooter obsessed over 'language' used as a programming tool; but I genuinely am intrigued with films or books dealing with that topic.

The REAL story was that I always felt vaguely manipulated after coming out of the theater. Sometimes not so vaguely.

Guess I'm just one of those weirdos who really dislikes going to the movies.

On edit: I really enjoyed seeing The Sound of Music in the theater, though. Don't think I got up to take a leak once during that flick.

I kind of prefer the suggestive hypnotic flicker of flickering film to the clear crisp digital projection now widely used; especially for indie/doc/foreign films. So in a way I specifically go to feel altered, enlightened or given an interesting experience. I remember walking out of "The Game" feeling a bit changed.

Of course, I paid $13 for a matinee of Cabin in the Woods out in Queens...so I guess the joke was on me.

Probably because I was too tired to think straight when I posted. It's one of my favorite TV series of all time and I loved Serenity too. Each time I rewatch them, I wonder how much Whedon actually knows about the mind control projects. Normally avoid horror movies, but may go see Cabin.

The first time I saw Serenity, because of a couple of phrases he used, I believed Whedon had to have some inside track on the programs or with a survivor. Now I think it was probably just the shock of seeing something so real to my life experience, yet so hidden, portrayed with some amount of fidelity on screen. If he's made something new, I'll probably go see it.

I still wish some of these folks who are making so much money off of these stories would put some of that to use in on the ground intervention programs or advocacy.

I agree. The closest seemed to be Roseanne Barr, but I have mixed feelings on that whole thing.

But these things are so rich in pop culture, particularly in moving images(Serenity, Borne series, Manchurian remake, Dollhouse, etc) one has to wonder if it's merely creative direction. Like Stanley Kubrick...ya know he had to have had some sort of privy to twilight culture and the blacker goings on of mankind.

LULZ it or hate it, I get a lot of gleanings from 8bits' unique brand of jazz improv.

I will always prefer seeing movies "sitting in the dark with strangers" rather than on a TV screen, no matter how large. My dad was a movie projectionist and the theater represented a safe place to me in my unhappy childhood, so no matter how much I learn about the ways films can be used to program us, I'll still go to the movies as often as I can afford to do so...but now a part of my mind entertains itself picking out the possible manipulations while the rest of us are completely immersed in delicious suspension of disbelief.

Kill List

It was a pretty cool film, I came away from it impressed with the risks taken.

Y'know, I can kinda relate--I'm the same way about reading. During the suckiest part of my growing up, I discovered just how far away I could get from reality through reading. I'd go out to the farthest corner of the pasture with books I'd scored at the library (generally sci-fi). I'd stay out there until it was too dark to read, then I'd trudge back to the house. I could sneak back in through a door into my bedroom on the second floor of the huge old farmhouse we lived in. Then I'd read some more until I conked out.

Yes, I was amused by its audacity. Reminded me of My Brother Tom, but with a crazy Wicker Man style murder cult rather than a suicide turned ghost.

Just saw "Cabin in The Woods" and was very pleasantly surprised. Solid genre piece with consistent humor and just enough winks to horror fandom (ie: Spoiler:cenobite in the basement!).

From a more woo-centric viewpoint, Spoiler:the idea that society has to stop killing the critical Fool (who is introduced flagrantly disregarding social norms and senses the puppeteers presence almost immediately) in order to move forward is a welcome change from the usual quick dispatching of the philosophy spouting stoner. Of course this "change" (return of the Old Gods) is presented in negative, horror-friendly terms, but I think that might just be residual tension from the tradition started by good ole' uptight HP. I'd be curious what message the writing team says they're getting across with this one.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Kill List, and some of it is still spinning in the back of my head. The violence in it really hit me hard, and the hammer bit was tougher for me than even Irreversible's notorious fire extinguisher scene. There are some dark threads I feel I still haven't tied together, Spoiler:such as the first scene of the play sword fight tying together with the 'hunchback' scene at the end and Jay's girlfriend "working in HR" "giving people pink slips" both seem to point towards...something.

I'd recommend Absentia as well to anyone looking for a RI-audience-friendly horror flick: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1610996/

Not bad. I thought the whole 'control room' bit reminded me of that movie "Stay Tuned" w/ John Ritter & Pam Dawber. Anyone remember that movie?

Holy f---...just saw Kill List. Geez... For some reason goofy crap like human centipede, hostel, saw etc cheeses me out more than it scares me.
But films like Kill List, Irreversible, Martyrs, Serbian Film, Red White And Blue...man... Yeah that hammer scene, the shed scene and the last 10 minutes.....christ.
Ive noticed this trend, starting with Irreversible a decade ago, where you have this new wave of cinema that really goes into these bright flashes of depravity
or taboo sexuality.

A similar film to Kill List, which also has some wtf brutal scenes out of nowhere, is the Australian crime drama "Snowtown" which I think is now on dvd.

Drive has some pretty brutal/over the top gory scenes, but the overall film is so stylish that it doesnt grab you like a more verite/natural film presenation might.

Anyways, thanks a lot guys...gonna have to watch some Seinfeld or Sandra Bullock Rom Com to cleanse my palette.
