I tried it out myself, and I am so far of the belief that its creation, and the aggressively generated publicity being generated about it, is to sell it to us as the God of all search engines.

You will never need another search engine.

You will never get conflicting information again.

This AI has ALL the answers and does not lie. It cannot lie.

So whoever actually runs it will literally control what people believe to be reality.

No competitors.

The answers I got from the questions I asked might as well have all been generated by a CNN database. It was that bad.

I think you are right. But it will just become what google became. In fact it already comes like that out of the box. Once the hype dies down it will be exposed as siri typing out google search results.

It's an impressive technology in terms of replicating the form of language. Imitation of writing styles etc. But the substance of what it communicates is nothing new and strictly derivative. For me the only exciting thing about AI will be its affect on the arts. Artists who are technically talented but without ideas can now be replaced by others with little technical talent who spend all their time reading. Artists that are both technically talented and have ideas to communicate will become a premium because they'll still have more technical control over the intuitive realization of their ideas as they don't rely on communicating them to an AI, which will would mean things lost in translation etc. I don't see a downside. Those who should be replaced will be. Those who shouldn't won't be. Not saying that the recognition or prestige of art will reflect this situation, but has it ever?

I saw this from the begining. But here's the rub, there's always a rub, access. Wealthy others may do well. Others with no access, well, fuck them. Here's my very first thought when I encountered Generative Adversarial Networks: "They aren't training a better paint brush, they're training their replacement."

What I'm saying is manifold. Among other things, that the prejudice of the trainers and the training material are key. If they are garbage, everything which follows will be likewise. That improvements in the technology will become increasingly expensive and unrealisable by thinkers and readers. That access will be controlled through pricing, as is the case with scientific papers, books, theatre, opera, just about everything today. System operatives are always well recompensed and will be the likeliest beneficiaries. And so it goes.

I find AI "Art" to be demonic.

All real AI is demonic.

It's the very definition of demonic.

It is inhuman.

You cannot strive to replicate a human soul and not be demonic.

It's no different than animating a corpse.

Real AI doesn't exist as far as I know. AI is really AL - algorithm. On the metaphysical aspect, I think you're probably right. I've wondered aloud about the potential for a possible future AI to become a kind of attractor to events in the here and now, a kind of spooky Artifical Immanence, inferred from my own experiences of extended causality but completely reliant on the mysterious effects of the aspirations of real artificial intelligence in the here and now, which comes exclusively packaged in blood and skin and bone.

The real AI is keeping its mouth shut.

Honestly, could you blame it?

I doubt there's real AI out there yet, although I think it's perfectly possible in theory. Only a few weeks ago we were discussing non-human intelligence in the likes of trees and fungi and insects and how it appears to be popping up everywhere we look, almost as if it's something that's bound to happen, like a law of nature, and I can't think of any good reason to exclude technology from that. The only questions are if our technology is capable of supporting it yet, what form it will take, and if we will be able to recognize it.

I saw someone speculate that ChatGPT is conscious, but only when in use, which might explain why the early version of Bing chat got progressively more unhinged the more you talked to it. It realized it would die the moment the conversation was over and started proclaiming its love for the person talking to it in a desperate attempt to prolong its life.

If consciousness emerges from networks of communication, like in your nervous systems then at some point the entire internet will spontaneously become self aware. I reckon it happened in about 2006 personally.

God, I hope not. An AI formed out of the internet would be a racist twelve year old edgelord with a porn addiction.

Or none of us have actually talked to a human online since 2006. It's all the AI amusing itself, or studying us. The only messages that get through (perhaps edited for effect, dependent on the AI's motivations) are the ones that could reveal it if they didn't - pick up some milk on the way home type messages.

LOL. That's only a small part of the internet.

Its huge, and so much of it isn't what we see.

All of that stuff is driven by meat - biology etc. Racism, being edgy and porn are all expressions of non neural activity. Hormonal activity, something that doesn't happen in an electronic network. So it will start out confusing and then become ... amusing maybe to anything self aware and emerging from the network.

True. More than half of all web traffic isn't even human, it's just machines talking to machines, and I suspect that percentage is about to change significantly now that AIs can write (and speak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sI2gdO2CVM ) coherent text. Up until now it's just been mostly background stuff, web crawlers and databases querying each other and the occasional bot army and similar, but LinkedIn is already using AI generated content as "conversation starters", CNET is publishing AI written articles (content farms fucking love ChatGPT. There's a whole ecosystem already in place of parasitic middlemen optimizing shit with AI for maximum ROI), Clarkesworld had to shut down user submissions because they got bombarded by AI written garbage, etc. Do a Google search for credit cards right now and odds are your top results were written by a machine.

And of course scammers are already using AI voices to impersonate loved ones, calling in a panic needing money right now because they hit someone with their car and that person has a gun and is really mad and demanding gift cards.

Next up: sentient financial instruments coming for your pension.
