I'm mostly just seeing spin in a lot of the articles and radio discussions of the incident. But it's worth keeping in mind that the health effects associated with the TMI accident were successfully spackled over with the defeat of several class action suits on behalf of the residents of the area. So you might say that incident is still being covered up.

Ditto barracuda. I see a lot of soft sell going on here. Serious attempt to prevent a bad taste for nuclear power in the public's mouth.

In regards to the cesium leak I heard one commentator say, and I paraphrase roughly, "yes cesium, which is what they treat cancer with". While that is true, I still had a serious eye roll on that one.

Well, if history is any guide (don't laugh), there's always going to be a cover-up.

Chernobyl:

The nearby city of Pripyat was not immediately evacuated after the incident, but after radiation levels set off alarms at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden,[35] over one thousand miles from the Chernobyl Plant, did the Soviet Union admit that an accident had occurred. Nevertheless, authorities attempted to conceal the scale of the disaster. For example, while evacuating the city of Pripyat, the following warning message was read on local radio: "An accident has occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One of the atomic reactors has been damaged. Aid will be given to those affected and a committee of government inquiry has been set up." This message gave the false impression that any damage or radiation was localized.

The government committee was eventually formed, and tasked to investigating the accident. It was headed by Valeri Legasov, who arrived at Chernobyl in the evening of 26 April. By the time Legasov arrived, two people had died and 52 were in the hospital. By the night of 26–27 April — more than 24 hours after the explosion — Legasov's committee had ample evidence showing extremely high levels of radiation had caused a number of cases of radiation exposure. Based on the evidence at hand, Legasov's committee had to acknowledge the destruction of the reactor and order the evacuation of Pripyat.

The evacuation began at 2 p.m. on 27 April. In order to expedite the evacuation, the residents were told to bring only what was necessary, as the authorities had said it would only would last approximately three days. As a result, most of the residents left their personal belongings, which can still be found today. An exclusion zone of 30 km (19 mi) remains in place today.

Up to 160 may have radiation exposure in Japan nuclear accident

03/11/2011
TOKYO, March 13 | Sat Mar 12, 2011 4:34pm EST
(Reuters) - The number of individuals exposed to radiation from the quake-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan could reach as high as 160, an official of Japan's nuclear safety agency said on Sunday.

Tsunami Weakens Substantially Before Hitting Americas
Nuclear Emergency Adds to Japan Disaster Woes
An eerie silence has descended over this northeastern Japanese city. Tens of thousands have evacuated their homes a day after one of the worst-ever recorded earthquakes and subsequent tsunami, which swallowed coastal villages.

The greatest fear here, right now, stems not from the continuing aftershocks and the ongoing tsunami warnings, but rather a silent and invisible potential killer.

One or more nuclear reactors in Fukushima may be close to, or have suffered a meltdown. A reactor wall has apparently collapsed at one reactor, injuring four people there Saturday afternoon.

This is, after all, the country said to suffer a "nuclear allergy" from its experience, at the close of World War II, of having uranium and plutonium bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The trauma of nuclear defeat left a scar salved with the moral high ground of pacifism and Japan disavowing itself of any development of nuclear weaponry.
But when it has come to electrical power generation, Japan has taken a different path, embracing atomic power as a way to compensate for a paucity of natural resources needed to generate ample energy for its post-war economic recovery.

The nuclear energy industry helped propel Japan to becoming the world's second largest economy (it only recent slipped to third place, behind the United States and China).

Japan built more than 50 such power plants, despite concerns among some Japanese that nuclear reactors and earthquake fault lines were not a comfortable combination.

Now the sum of all those fears is a distinct reality. While residents evacuate, battalions of rescue workers, both domestic and foreign are heading for Fukushima.

This city, despite the ominous nuclear threat, is the staging ground for what will likely prove to be one of the largest-ever search and rescue efforts in human history.

Fukushima is the closest significant airport still open to the worst-hit areas.

The tsunami along the coast, 30 kilometers east, swallowed entire communities - many already severely damaged by Friday's magnitude 8.9 quake - in a few minutes. The devastation was recorded on video by military and media helicopter crews who hovered above the unbelievable scene, helpless to intervene.

More than 50 countries have already pledged aid to Japan. Most will fly into Fukushima and fan out towards the north and east for a search and recovery operation likely to go on for weeks.

Many of the bodies, washed out to sea, will never be found. Some survivors will be severely traumatized, injured and hungry. A lucky few are certain to be pried loose beneath collapsed buildings. It is a drama we have viewed over the years in such diverse places as Mexico, Turkey, Indonesia, China and, just weeks ago, New Zealand.

In the days ahead, we will bring you glimpses of this tragedy from on location. Usually, the reporter's eye is supposed to be unblinking and the prose without passion. But certainly, this time the eye will glisten with tears as we collectively mourn the lost ones, and then shed more tears as we share the happiness when some of the survivors are reunited with loved ones.

Yeah Jack I think they are on verge of admitting it finally.

Cnn keeps saying "meltdown may be happening now". They keep harping on it.

I think it has been official since yesterday and they are just delaying the news until they get more people moved.

Jesus H Christ in heaven above. I knew it too. I hope like usual, I'm still wrong.

I had a good friend/girlfriend who was pure Japanese and for some reason I can tell, culturally, when shit hits the fan when a Japanese person is trying to hide something (long story). It's in their eyes and their graciousness -- Japanese people do not like to lie. Truly the most beautiful culture on the planet. But I could tell when watching the PM was hiding something.

Meltdown Caused Nuke Plant Explosion: Safety Body

TOKYO (Nikkei)--The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) said Saturday afternoon the explosion at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant could only have been caused by a meltdown of the reactor core.

The same day, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501), which runs the plant, began to flood the damaged reactor with seawater to cool it down, resorting to measures that could rust the reactor and force the utility to scrap it.

Cesium and iodine, by-products of nuclear fission, were detected around the plant, which would make the explosion the worst accident in the roughly 50-year history of Japanese nuclear power generation.

An explosion was heard near the plant's No. 1 reactor about 3:30 p.m. and plumes of white smoke went up 10 minutes later. The ceiling of the building housing the reactor collapsed, according to information obtained by Fukushima prefectural authorities.

At a news conference Saturday night, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano discounted the possibility of a significant leak of radioactive material from the accident. "The walls of the building containing the reactor were destroyed, meaning that the metal container encasing the reactor did not explode," Edano said.

The amount of radiation detected inside the plant after 4:00 p.m. slightly exceeded the dose people can safely receive in a year, according to information obtained by the Fukushima prefectural government.

The No. 1 reactor shut down automatically soon after a massive earthquake hit the area Friday, but its emergency core cooling system failed to cool the reactor's core sufficiently.

NISA is affiliated with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

From Kevin at cryptogon, re: US delivers coolant to [water cooled] quake-hit Japan's N-plant; “Coolant” = “Billion Dollar Kill Switch”.

So at some point, if the delivery wasn't precautionary, the decision was made to junk the entire plant in the interests of safety.
