Absolutely wild that the official Ukrainian National Guard Twitter account is posting in English about how the infamous Azov Battalion is greasing their bullets with pork fat before shooting their Muslim enemies with them.

Glad you also found it useful, RocketMan and drstrangelove. I'm wary of anything coming out of a warzone, especially when I don't know the country or the language (or the reporter), but he makes an honest impression and what he says sounds plausible and illuminating

He has a couple of other short recent videos on his YT channel and he also has a Telegram account.

With Europe now offering aircraft to Ukraine, along with all the weapons, sanctions, etc., it is no longer just a Ukraine - Russian affair, Ukraine is becoming a proxy for NATO in a larger war against Russia. At least that is how Russia sees it and so now we see a nuclear alert status for Russia. This is getting quite serious.
Putin puts Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert as tensions rise with West

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday ordered his country’s nuclear weapons to be prepared for heightened readiness to launch because of what he described as “aggressive statements” by Western adversaries.

This would not be unrelated to the NATO's Ukraine proxy war moves..

Belarus referendum approves proposal to renounce non-nuclear status – agencies
Feb 28, 2022, 09:53 GMT

Reuters) -A referendum in Belarus on Sunday approved a new constitution ditching the country’s non-nuclear status at a time when the former Soviet republic has become a launch pad for Russian troops invading Ukraine, Russian news agencies said.

The agencies cited the Belarus central elections commission as saying 65.2% of those who took part voted in favor. The result came as little surprise, given the tightly controlled rule of President Alexander Lukashenko.

The new constitution could see nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil for the first time since the country gave them up after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Russia Sanctions Over Ukraine Largely Spare Energy Sector, Vital to Europe
The West is rolling out increasingly tough sanctions on Russia but it is going out of its way to preserve the country’s biggest source of revenue: energy exports.

In the latest example, the European Union said late Saturday that it had agreed with the U.S., the U.K. and Canada to eject some of Russia’s banks from the global financial system’s payments infrastructure, Swift. The move, if applied to all banks, would be powerful, essentially blocking money transfers in and out of the country. By cutting only some, Western countries are allowing payments, including for energy, to continue through non-sanctioned banks.

The biggest mistake Gorbachev made when he negotiated the end of the cold war, was not to insist on a quid pro quo wrt NATO having to disband at the same time as the USSR. As it turned out, not only did NATO not disband, it went after and recruited most all of the ex-satellite countries of the USSR. George Soros and his org had a lot to do with the color revolutions along the way. The cold war never ended, it just transitioned from USSR to Russia.

What should Ukraine do?
Surrender unconditionally when they have had 30 years of self-governance?

What is the opinion on the board on this question?

I live in Finland, and my anxiety is palpable.

One of my strongest childhood memories is me telling my little brother that birch leaves can be eaten. We eat some. Then our mother comes to us, terrified, and tells us we must not eat the leaves, there may be radiation.

This was after the Chernobyl accident, and we lived in the fallout zone. I had such dread that I had poisoned my little brother.

I have that same feeling now.

Best case scenario for the Ukrainian government is a partition of the country into West and East using the Dnieper river as a natural border. Kiev becomes Berlin 1946. Russia gets its buffer region. Western Ukraine joins NATO. But most importantly, while not ideal, the Ukrainian people can get on with their lives due to the political stability this brings.

Failing this outcome, Zelensky has to go one way or another. Ukraine isn't sovereign. People can pretend it is all they want, but it isn't. And it can only achieve political stability if it either joins NATO or meets Russia's need for security along its border. Since the Ukrainian government has failed to secure either of these things, the Ukrainian population now live in a warzone. And in response to this Zelensky has provided them with two things, and two things only: Weapons. Nationalism. In other words he provides them with death. If you are under 60 and male, you cannot legally opt out of this. For this reason, as strange as it may sound, if Zelensky refuses to relent, then ahhhh :angelwings:

Beyond Ukraine the security of the world rests on an acceptable outcome for Russia. Though intuition tells me all the details have been worked out behind the scenes already. Even still, things rarely play out down below as planned out up above.

The 13 Ukrainian border guards stationed on a rocky Black Sea landmass known as Snake Island might have known they were doomed when the Russian warship called for their surrender Thursday during the first full day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“This is a Russian warship,” the invaders radioed to the guards. “I propose you lay down arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed and unnecessary victims. Otherwise, you’ll be bombed.”

“Russian warship, go fuck yourself,” the Ukrainians responded.

Later in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the guards had “died heroically” defending the island, also known as Zmiinyi, according to a report in Ukrayinska Pravda.
On our Snake Island, defending it to the last, all the border guards died heroically,” Zelenskyy said. “But they did not give in. All of them will be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously. Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
