Those of us who have been reading and commenting on RI since Jeff was writing his entries certainly remember the existence of ops like MKOften and MKUltra, and are aware of the likes of Sidney Gottlieb and the occult side of the 3rd Reich. I've watched Cabin in the Woods three times, and haven't laughed at all. 'Giant, evil gods' have been central to the beliefs of societies throughout history, and have been used to slaughter millions. What do you think is happening right now with the involvement of evangelical Christians and Salafist Jihadists in the 'war for civilization'? This movie simply uses the patina of poking fun at the slasher gender to delve into much, much more troubling topics.
I agree with you. I laughed because of the truth of it. Have you never? The film was very explicit in announcing itself as a work of critical theory on the subject, from the first scene forward.

In my mind the ending leaves room for two happy scenarios: Spoiler:Our kids survive again (why not, they survived all the rest of the stabbing-biting-throwing-crashing-bulletdodging-bleeding-random attack by 400 creatures until that point) and the ancient gods, angered for no longer getting their sacrifice and emerging to the surface, nevertheless dissolve, because these ritual sacrifices were what was feeding them, and not, as the control order believed, holding them back.

Good review Jack!

Even during the movie I noticed the calm, ho hum matter of fact manner of which the two main CIA agents talk is akin to how drone pilot guys and their superiors talk. It's like yeah yeah, push a button kill some innocents, all in a days work...so how's Margaret and the kids?

Be it from a CT standpoint, if one thinks they're doing it for the almighty money god, the Abrahamic God, "the devil", etc real life often does feel like Cabin in the Woods.
I do wish Hugh was around here and that he could step back a bit and just enjoy a movie. I think he'd get a big kick out of the movie.

I've always thought that big hierarchical societies are predicated on the frequent ritual sacrifice of the young by the old. They often make a big fetish out of it, as with Christians. (33 is still young, folks.)

Note: The similarly-themed Hunger Games looks like a lousy movie, so art still counts.

Thanks for pointing this one out, because (thanks to the title, which gets it a guaranteed market of which I am not a part) I would have never thought to watch this one.

another way to think about it is that the various tier-1 monsters represent social belief-systems the young are fed to (indoctrinated to). This being thought essential to propiate the old gawds, which are old social belief-systems, or possibly represent stark, un-moderated human nature, which everyone has been taught to have a massive fear of. In the end our heroes finally make the difficult decision to face mankind's social Shadow content. Fear must be passed through to go beyond the subject of the fear. Most likely Jack is correct, and once the old gawds break free, they up and leave, as they know they're not going to fed any longer. The tier-1 monsters are also gone, since they had merely been agents of the great submerged fear all along.
