Makes me think increasingly as regards this forum, the garnish has eaten the steak.

Reading Jeff Wells blog from start to finish should be mandatory before posting, no?

A good friend is daily well-informed by NPR, CBC and Democracy Now!, so naturally he hasn't heard anything about the substantial allegations of organized, high-level child sex abuse in the UK. When I talk about it, he just doesn't 'get' the gravity of it; he says, "I don't follow the tabloid scandals -- why should I care?" Now I know what to say in reply.

People in my own family - who are highly educated and have heard about everything discussed here, in passing - have an answer to this one.

Now that there is no more coherent "official narrative" - just stop thinking, period. Easy...

Australia, this time
Senator Bill Heffernan uses parliamentary privilege to accuse a former PM of being alleged paedophile abc.net.au 21 Oct 2015

Liberal senator Bill Heffernan has used parliamentary privilege to accuse an unnamed former prime minister of being an alleged paedophile, while also pointing the finger at the judiciary.

Senator Heffernan has been campaigning for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to expand its investigation to include the court system.

He told Senate estimates on Tuesday that he had given the commission "very disturbing" police documents that named at least 28 alleged paedophiles, some of whom are prominent Australians.

But he said the commission had told him it could not investigate the cases because they were outside its terms of reference.

Paedophiles working as teachers a ‘social good’ - psychologist

A prominent psychologist has drawn fury from children’s charities after suggesting it can be a “good” thing if paedophiles find jobs teaching or social work.

Dr Glenn Wilson, a consultant psychologist, claimed some paedophiles “gravitate” into such professions to “enjoy the company of children” but would not necessarily abuse them.

He said this enabled them to channel their sexual desires towards “social good”.

His remarks, in an article published on The Independent newspaper’s website, under a headline reading “Not all paedophiles are bad people”, were condemned by the NSPCC as “naïve and dangerous” and by the child welfare campaigner Dame Esther Rantzen as “barking mad”.

But Dr Wilson defended his comments – going on to liken paedophiles seeking out jobs as teachers or social workers to male doctors training as gynaecologists.

He said he would not be surprised if some doctors did so “because of their sexual interest in women”.

Dr Wilson, who is recently retired but has held a string of academic posts including at Kings College London and Gresham College, also spoke of victims wanting to "cash in" on episodes of sexual abuse in the past.

Referring to the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile revelations, he said: “There is a danger of becoming hysterical about paedophilia and seeing it everywhere, like witches at Salem, or ‘Commies’ in Hollywood during McCarthyism.

“Paedophiles do exist, but there are very few of them and not all are child molesters.”

He added: “In my studies of the Paedophile Information Exchange in the 1980s, many members admitted sexual feelings for children which they had been able to contain or turn to social good.

“Some gravitated toward occupations such as schoolteacher or social worker, where they could enjoy the company of children without plotting abuse.

“This fitted with personality profiles indicating that they were gentle, rational and not disposed to harm anybody.”

Speaking to the Telegraph he said paedophilia should be viewed as a type of “sexual orientation” which is not necessarily acted upon.

“It would not surprise me at all if a lot of heterosexual males had taken up gynaecology because of their sexual interest in women,” he added.

“That might possibly be true but very few of them would ever overstep the mark.”

Dame Esther Rantzen said: “This is like giving an arsonist a box of matches.

“The sexual abuse of children has been described as an attack on a child’s soul and can cause lifelong damage.

“Paedophiles who recognise how dangerous they are will avoid temptation and not put themselves in a situation where children are at risk.

“This is irresponsible in the extreme and doesn’t do much for the reputation of psychologists.

“We know that paedophiles are drawn to occupations which allow them access to children but to say it is a ‘good’ thing is barking mad."

A spokesman for the NSPCC said: “These comments are totally misguided.

“The idea that people with sexual feelings towards children can somehow harness this for social good is naïve and dangerous.

“We know that many sex offenders will seek roles within certain caring professions precisely because they want to have access to children – and groom individuals for abuse.

“That is why vetting, barring and robust child protection is so important. Interviews with convicted paedophiles show they are highly manipulative and devious in the way they cover their tracks.

“Some paedophiles may not have acted on their urges or yet committed a crime but it is important to seriously question the claims of people with these desires, as so much abuse goes unreported.”

Maris Stratulis, manager of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) said: “Paedophiles will use sophisticated rhetoric to justify and promote their feelings of sexual desire towards children.

“We should recognise their agenda and not give their arguments any credibility".

.....detailing John Le Carre's "perfect" background....the sexually molested son of a Mason...a metaphorical widow's son of such repute as to get a tap on the shoulder at 17 yrs old...very odd....

A perfect spy: Abandoned by his mother and billed for his own school fees by his conman father - it’s no wonder how John le Carre’s childhood made him turn out

He was such an illusionist he could even fake being ill - as a child of 12, he was once hospitalised with simulated epilepsy.
Encouraged by his success, he staged a hernia so convincingly that doctors operated on him.

The histrionic dimension is one le Carré can concur with: ‘I relished the notion of appearing to be someone dull, while all the time I was someone terribly exciting,’ he once said. But not someone who was altogether very nice.

Sisman, clearly grateful to le Carré for 50 hours of interviews and access to the archives, calls his subject ‘courteous, sophisticated and amusing’.

And I’m sure he is a considerate host, refilling one’s glass - but he is also a man who, while still at university, spied on fellow students, searching their rooms for ‘anything incriminating’. He pretended to be a Socialist, infiltrated Labour clubs and reported people to his MI5 handler or ‘control’, whom he met for debriefings in nearby Woodstock.

I know ‘fragile democracies were threatened by Communist takeover’ during the Cold War, but what does it say about a chap that he would deliberately befriend a person in order to betray them?

Of course, ‘le Carré’ is itself a fiction. The real person is called David Cornwell, born in Poole, Dorset, in 1931. From his earliest days, Cornwell/le Carré had a predilection for secretiveness.

The success of his books is all down to the codes and secret messages: dead letter drops, tradecraft, cover names, moles, the Cousins, scalphunters, babysitters, pavement artists, lamplighters and the reptile fund. There’s no secret, however, about where le Carré got it from, as the most fascinating figure in this biography, in fact, isn’t the novelist, but his father.

Ronnie Cornwell was a shameless confidence trickster, or ‘creative opportunist’.
Among his extravagant schemes were the manufacture of laxative pills, the cornering of the Christmas cracker market and the supplying of Italian lorries to Indonesia.

Ronnie cheated his neighbours in Chalfont St Peter, Bucks, diddled widows out of pensions and left a trail of bounced cheques and blackmail threats. In 1934, he was sentenced to six months in prison for fraud. Two years later, he was declared bankrupt and, until his death in 1975, was always going bust and fleeing the police.
Le Carré’s first wife, Ann, thought Ronnie ‘the only really evil person I ever met’.

He smoked cigars, drank brandy, had cars with personalised number plates, stayed in the best hotels - and never settled a bill. ‘His office, his car, his chauffeur, his box at Ascot . . . Everything was fake, hired for the occasion, never paid for.’

‘Menace lurked beneath the charm,’ says Sisman. He slapped his women around, sexually molested his two sons, and then thrashed them with his braces. He routinely searched their rooms, opened their post and eavesdropped on phone calls.

Needless to say, Ronnie was a pillar of the community, in 1949 attending a white-tie dinner with the Duke of Edinburgh. He belonged to the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and the Freemasons.
With Ronnie in clink, le Carré and his brother, Tony, were farmed out to relatives who beat them. Olive, their mother, did an understandable bunk.
Terms at minor public schools followed, the children moving on when fees, predictably, weren’t paid.

Eventually, they settled at Sherborne, which, le Carré said, was riddled with snobbery and prejudice. He left prematurely ‘after punching his housemaster, who’d tried to kiss him’.
Le Carré, who’d somehow developed a facility for the German language, next turned up as a 17-year-old student at the University of Bern, where, in October 1948, he was approached on a park bench by a member of the British Embassy.

FBI knew Jared Fogle was a pedophile — and let him continue molesting children for years anyway

Fogle pleaded guilty to having sex with two minors and possessing homemade child pornography, although there were many more victims. He agreed to a plea deal where he will serve 5 to 12.5 years in prison and pay $1.4 million in restitution to his victims.

The story was reignited two days ago when the New York Post revealed the contents of secretly recorded audio tapes. In them, Fogle’s perversions are laid bare.

“I would fly us clear across the world if we need to. To Thailand or wherever we want to go. If we’re gonna try to get some young kids with us it would be a lot easier,” said 38-year-old Fogle, married father of two, in the tapes. “I had a little boy. It was amazing. It just felt so good. I mean, it felt — it felt so good.”

The recordings were made by Rochelle Herman-Walrond, a former Florida journalist who took it upon herself to stop Fogle after hearing him profess his sexual taste for children. Masking her own disgust, she befriended Fogle so she could record and expose him.

She contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who asked her to wear a wire. Glossed over in the mainstream media, however, is the fact that the entire process took ten years, according to an interview Herman-Walrond gave to ABC News.

She wore a wire for four-and-a-half years before the FBI took action and arrested Fogle.

[...]

For at least four years, the FBI had evidence of Fogle’s criminal behavior and chose to let the abuse continue. As Herman-Walrond asked, why did it take so long to stop him?

The casual excuse is the bureaucracy itself, but we know that when the government wants to act quickly, it does. It does not hesitate in killing, disappearing, or jailing those it deems are a threat to government, and it sets aside constitutional protections to do so.

However, when the threat is in the form of sexual predation on children, government takes its time because “it just happens to take that long.”

Jeb Bush Borrowed His New Slogan From England's Most Notorious Child Abuser

To most American voters (especially the younger ones), Jeb Bush’s new slogan will mostly just sound uninspired, and slightly reminiscent of Bob the Builder. But for pretty much anyone even mildly aware of British popular culture, the words “Jeb Can Fix It,” soon to be plastered on every surface his dying campaign can touch, will bring to mind just one thing: Jimmy Savile, one of the most prolific child abusers in the history of entertainment.

Could PIE have hatched a more dastardly plot than this:

Hundreds of Nude Photos Jolt Colorado School
By KASSONDRA CLOOS and JULIE TURKEWITZNOV. 6, 2015

Cañon City High School in Colorado. Students used a “photo vault” app on their phones to hide the photos, an official said. Credit Nick Cote for The New York
CAÑON CITY, Colo. — At least 100 students at a high school in Cañon City traded naked pictures of themselves, the authorities said Friday, part of a large sexting ring.

The revelation has left parents outraged, administrators searching for missed clues, and the police and the district attorney’s office debating whether to file child pornography charges — including felony charges — against some of the participants.

George Welsh, the superintendent of the Cañon City school system, said students at Cañon City High School had been circulating 300 to 400 nude photographs, including images of “certainly over 100 different kids,” on their cellphones. “This is a lot of kids involved,” he said, adding that the children in the pictures were believed to be students at the high school as well as eighth graders from the middle school.

Members of the high school football team, the Cañon City Tigers, were at the center of the sexting ring, Mr. Welsh said. On Thursday night, separate community meetings were held for parents of football players and parents of other students to address the scandal, which has shocked this quiet, semirural community of 16,000. The team was forced to forfeit its final game of the season.

Because it is a felony to possess or distribute child pornography, the charges could be serious. But because most of the people at fault are themselves minors and, in some cases, took pictures of themselves and sent them to others, law enforcement officials are at a loss as to how to proceed. “Consenting adults can do this to their hearts’ content,” said Thom LeDoux, the district attorney, but “if the subject is under the age of 18, that’s a problem.”

He added that he was not interested in arresting hundreds of children and would “use discretion” if he decided to file charges.

Mr. Welsh said a significant percentage of the student body at Cañon City High School had participated, with boys and girls involved in seemingly equal numbers. The photo-sharing, some of which took place in school, was done largely on cellphone applications called “vault apps” that look innocent enough — some look like calculators — but are really secret troves of photographs accessible after entering a password.

While sexting among children is a rampant problem, “I hope no other school has it at the level we have it at,” Bret Meuli, the principal of Cañon City High School, said in an interview in his office. “But I fear we aren’t the only ones.”

Students at the school described a competitive point system that classmates used to accrue photographs. Different point values were assigned to different students. Students who collected naked photographs gained points by adding these desirable children to their collections. Isaac Stringer, a junior interviewed outside the high school who said he did not participate in the photo-sharing, called the boy with the largest collection “the pimp of pictures.”

The repercussions are likely to resonate loudly over the days and weeks ahead in this small town, a tightly knit community ringed by correctional centers, where many people are employed, as well as tourist attractions such as Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, which claims to have “America’s highest suspension bridge.”

Mr. Welsh, the superintendent, said in a statement that “because a large number of our high school football players were implicated in this behavior, the coaching staff and administration, after careful thought and consideration, decided that stepping on the field to play this weekend to represent the Cañon City community is just not an option.”

The “sexting scandal,” as parents are calling it, shocked many, and it has also elicited anger from parents who say they knew about this type of photo-sharing for years and sought unsuccessfully to get school officials to intervene. Heidi Wolfgang, 41, a mother who no longer lives in the district, said in a telephone interview that she had spoken to a Cañon City Middle School counselor in 2012 after she found photographs of a nude adolescent on a cellphone owned by her daughter, then 12.

“He told me there was nothing the school could do because half the school was sexting,” Ms. Wolfgang said. She called the response “heartbreaking,” and said she eventually decided to educate her child at home.

Mr. Welsh said that like other school systems across the country, Cañon City schools had received reports of students’ exchanging lewd photographs, but that he had not been aware of the scope of the issue until recently, when officials received anonymous tips through a system called Colorado Safe2Tell.

“If there’s not a lead that takes you to this larger thing going on, why would you go there?” Mr. Welsh said.

Another mother, Lisa Graham, 46, said her daughter, now a junior at the high school, had been “propositioned by multiple guys” during her freshman year. “She received unsolicited photos from guys, which she immediately deleted,” Ms. Graham said by telephone. “I’m frustrated if people knew and didn’t shut it down three years ago.”

Mr. Meuli has been principal for six years, and he was assistant principal of the school before that. He said that the school had had to handle a few instances in which a girl would break up with a boy and fear that he would circulate intimate photos of her, but that nothing this serious had been brought to his attention before.

What to do about a sexting scandal involving potentially hundreds of students was not covered in his master’s degree classes, Mr. Meuli said — but these days, it should be, he added.

The high school has turned over a cellphone that contains several hundred images to the police, and investigators will try to identify the children in the pictures, according to Paul Schultz, the Cañon City police chief. No arrests have been made, Chief Schultz said, and parents have been notified about the apps that can be used to mask the illicit photographs.

Mr. LeDoux, the district attorney, said the investigation would look into whether any adults were involved, whether children were bullied into participating, and whether any illegal sexual contact occurred.

Amy Adele Hasinoff, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Denver and the author of a new book, “Sexting Panic,” contends that schools need to find new ways to talk to students about the issue. Rather than just demanding that students abstain from sending risqué images, she said, educators should aim for open conversations that involve guidance in “safer sexting” with trusted partners.

Teachers and school officials “think they’re protecting people from harm,” Professor Hasinoff said. “But we know it doesn’t work.”

Death Threats, Child Porn, and War Crimes: Inside CIA Investigations of Its Own Employees

By Jason Leopold

November 12, 2015

Like all federal government agencies, the CIA has an Office of Inspector General (OIG). It investigates CIA personnel who are accused of criminal wrongdoing and suspected of violating agency policies.

Unlike most other federal agencies, however, the CIA makes certain that the details of its OIG investigations are shrouded in secrecy. Reports prepared by the OIG about its investigations are classified — even the titles of the reports are a secret. But years of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) work has allowed VICE News to publish several reports about high-profile investigations undertaken by the OIG, including one about how the agency helped produce the 2012 film Zero Dark Thirty. Now another release of OIG documents [pdf at the end of this story] has revealed what some of the OIG's other investigations entailed.

Between January 2013 and May 2014, the OIG completed 111 investigations of alleged crimes, such as the killing of an animal on federal property, possession of child pornography, fraud, embezzlement, and domestic violence. The CIA is still processing VICE News's FOIA request for a list of investigations the OIG completed between May 2014 and the present.

[...]

In another case involving a CIA National Clandestine Service employee, the OIG investigated claims that the employee had engaged in human trafficking and had been mistreating domestic workers "by not paying adequate wages, forcing long work hours, and making threats to have family members… killed."

"Additionally, the [redacted] alleged that [the CIA employee and the employee's spouse] abused illegal drugs and also abused their children," states an April 25, 2014 memo from the CIA's Assistant Inspector General for Investigations that was sent to top officials at the National Clandestine Service. The OIG and the agency's Office of Medical Services probed the child abuse claims but could not substantiate the allegations. A redacted part of the memo contains an explanation about the investigation and notes that "in the absence of additional leads or information, the alleged child abuse investigation is closed."

The OIG did, however, corroborate that the CIA employee admitted paying the domestic workers $470 per month instead of the required $1,000 "per terms of the contract." The CIA employee denied threatening to kill the employees' family members. The case was referred to the Justice Department for prosecution, "which declined prosecution pertaining to the alleged human trafficking allegations."

[...]

One of the cases that did result in a prosecution involved a former CIA contractor who was accused in October 2012 of disclosing classified information. The OIG discovered the breach when it obtained a notification from the CIA's Office of Security that the contractor's hard drive contained top-secret documents.

"Numerous technical documents related to Agency systems were found on [redacted] laptop," the OIG investigation documents said.

The discovery was made during a separate investigation into claims the contractor was in possession of child pornography. The CIA's Counterintelligence Center and the FBI conducted a joint investigation. The OIG documents said the contractor pleaded guilty to a crime (the nature of which was redacted), received a sentence (also redacted), and registered as a sex offender.

Frankly, these incidents (surely the tip of an iceberg) could easily be explained away as just the acts of some fucked-up people. And that's exactly the sort of reflexive reaction you could expect about this sort of thing. I strongly suspect that there are other motivating factors, maybe something in the cultural milieu of the intelligence community or of the schools they attended? Not to imply that this hasn't been gone over a million times here before...

Do click through to that link I embedded, it's a helpful reminder:

A 2006 Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigation into the purchase of child pornography online turned up more than 250 civilian and military employees of the Defense Department -- including some with the highest available security clearance -- who used credit cards or PayPal to purchase images of children in sexual situations. But the Pentagon investigated only a handful of the cases, Defense Department records show.

The cases turned up during a 2006 ICE inquiry, called Project Flicker, which targeted overseas processing of child-porn payments. As part of the probe, ICE investigators gained access to the names and credit card information of more than 5,000 Americans who had subscribed to websites offering images of child pornography. Many of those individuals provided military email addresses or physical addresses with Army or fleet ZIP codes when they purchased the subscriptions.

In a related inquiry, the Pentagon's Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) cross-checked the ICE list against military databases to come up with a list of Defense employees and contractors who appeared to be guilty of purchasing child pornography. The names included staffers for the secretary of defense, contractors for the ultra-secretive National Security Agency, and a program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. But the DCIS opened investigations into only 20 percent of the individuals identified, and succeeded in prosecuting just a handful.

"DCIS is primarily tasked with rooting out contractor fraud and investigating security breaches"

It sounds like they dumped off the job on people with a job description similar to the CIA's OIG
