New Ebola fatalities push Uganda toll to 25

Dec 8

KAMPALA (AFP) - A dreaded Ebola outbreak has killed two people, bringing the toll to 25 in western Uganda, an official said Saturday, as health teams battled to contain the virulent strain in the region.

Health authorities continued to monitor hundreds of quarantined people who had contacts with the Ebola victims in Bundibugyo district, home to 250,000 people and the outbreak's epicentre.

"Two people died last night in Bundibugyo, bringing the death toll to 25," said Sam Okware, a health ministry official heading the battle against the disease.

The mysterious strain has so far infected 104 people -- including the 25 dead -- some of them medical workers who treated patients without latex gloves and respirator gowns.

Experts from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were studying new blood and tissue samples from western Kanungu and Kasese districts and northwestern Adjuman district for possible Ebola infections.

The health ministry said the previously unknown Ebola virus hit the region in September, simmered unnoticed while obscured by chaos and spurred other infections with similar symptoms, until it was identified in late November.

Unlike other Ebola strains, which kill after signature non-stop haemorrhage, the new strain takes life after provoking mainly high fever, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Although containing the strain is the priority, epidemiologists are also scouring the area to search for the source of the virus, seven years after it killed at least 170 people in northern Uganda, in a bid to stall future outbreaks.

Spread by body secretions, the blood-borne disease, Ebola was named after a small DRC river where it was discovered in 1976. It re-emerged in Sudan later the same year. Other outbreaks have been recorded in Ivory Coast, Gabon and Uganda.

In the previous outbreaks, the disease struck with initial ferocity causing massive fatalities, then faded away months later without leaving a hint where it came from. Experts are still seeking its footprints, if any.

Because of its scanty history, scientists have concluded that the strain is somewhat containable because it kills its victims faster than it can spread to new hosts.

I find it odd that they've never located the natural reservoir for Ebola after all these years.

The life of Dr. William Close
Image
February 9, 2009

We remember the late Doctor William Close who passed away last month. He was the father of actress Glenn Close, and once the personal doctor of the president of Zaire ( Mobutu also had met Patrice Lumumba ). While there he worked to stop the first Ebola epidemic in Zaire. Anchor Marco Werman talks to a friend and colleague of Dr. Close, Dr. Joel Breman, of the National Institutes of Health.

Thanks for posting this MinM.

So many red flags around William Close including being personal physician to the CIA's boy Mobutu, as well as the Ebola ties, which may well lead to the world of biological warfare. Moral Rearmament is alleged by CIA big cheese Miles Copeland to have willingly made itself part of the Cold War apparatus, linking up operationally with the CIA in the 50's.

I'm sure there's more than that..

That's a very good question- I'm not completely into Dave McGowan's approach in Laurel Canyon, where any tie from entertainer to military can be taken as suggesting conspiracy. I'm also concerned about the "Keyword Hijacking" approach which can blur the lines between "free association" and a logical argument.

That said, there has to be something very real going on in this regard, something creepy and weird...

USG used biological weapons against North Korea.

USG used biological weapons against Cuba.

USG tested biological weapons in Haiti.

USG has been busy in Africa for decades...Only stands to reason.

YouTube - Scientist attempts to smuggle 22 vials of Ebola into US

Scientist arrested for smuggling vials used in Ebola research into US
Image
A Canadian scientist has been arrested for smuggling 22 vials stolen from Canada's National Microbiology Lab, used in Ebola and HIV research, into the United States, Canadian and US officials said Wednesday.

Konan Michel Yao, 42, "was taken into custody" while crossing the border from Manitoba province into the western US state of North Dakota on May 5, said a spokeswoman for the Public Health Agency of Canada, which operates the lab.

According to US prosecutor Lynn Jordheim, Yao was detained for carrying unidentified biological materials in vials wrapped in aluminium foil inside a glove and packaged in a plastic bag, along with electrical wires, in the trunk of his car.

Yao said in an affidavit he stole the vials, described as research vectors, from the Winnipeg lab on his last day of work there on January 21.

He told US border guards he was taking them to his new job with the National Institutes of Health at the Biodefense Research Laboratory in Bethesda, Maryland.

US authorities feared their contents could pose a terrorist threat. But tests later showed "they are not hazardous," said Jordheim.

"This turned out not to be a terrorism-related case," he said by telephone from North Dakota. "It appears to be exactly as he (Yao) said. However, he still faces possible charges for smuggling the vials into the United States."

Yao, meanwhile, remains in US custody after waiving his right to bail and preliminary hearings, as he awaits a possible grand jury indictment for smuggling, he said.

A Public Health Agency of Canada spokeswoman told AFP Yao "was working on vaccines for the Ebola virus and HIV, among other things."...

Jeebus...
What use is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biosafety_ ... ty_level_4 lab if employees can just stuff some vials in a glove and hit the highway...

This level is required for work with dangerous and exotic agents that pose a high individual risk of aerosol-transmitted laboratory infections, agents which cause severe to fatal disease in humans for which vaccines or other treatments are not available, such as Bolivian and Argentine hemorrhagic fevers, Marburg virus, Ebola virus, Lassa fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and other various hemorrhagic diseases.

"Hey, can you start a little early at your new job, just stuff the rest of the empty vials in the glove box and drive over here pronto!"

Glenn Close is not happy about her cameo at the end of a raunchy video made by a high-ranking Navy commander. Her publicist released the following statement to the Washington Post:

"I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor. The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result of a seemingly innocent request of me during a visit to the aircraft carrier over four years ago."

Videos featuring homophobic slurs and simulated masturbation, feces consumption and anal probing were made aboard the USS Enterprise several years ago by Capt. Owen Honor, who was relieved of his command on Tuesday. They surfaced Saturday in a report released by the Virginian-Pilot.

Glenn unwittingly appears toward the end of the video below holding a stuffed parrot during a montage to Peter Cetera's 'Glory of Love,' just after a close shot of condoms and lube.

West Africa: What are US Biological Warfare Researchers Doing in the Ebola Zone?

This is a call for an immediate, thorough, and independent investigation of Tulane University researchers (see here and here) and their Fort Detrick associates in the US biowarfare research community, who have been operating in West Africa during the past several years.

What exactly have they been doing? ...

Hullo! Experimental drug from a private biotech firm! Expect more Ebola hysteria until they say what this outfit's name is and where you can buy their drug. Also interesting that she'd been working with the safety suits.

Second Ebola patient wheeled into Atlanta hospital for treatment

(Reuters) - An American missionary stricken with Ebola in West Africa wore a protective white suit on Tuesday as she was wheeled on a stretcher into the Atlanta hospital where doctors will try to save her and a fellow aid worker from the deadly virus.

Nancy Writebol, 59, arrived in the United States after being flown overnight from Liberia and will be treated by infectious disease specialists at Emory University Hospital, according to Christian missionary group SIM USA.

She will be in the same isolation ward as Kent Brantly, 33, an Ebola-infected American doctor who was able to walk into the hospital when he arrived by ambulance on Saturday.

The pair, who served on a joint team in Monrovia run by Christian aid groups SIM USA and Samaritan's Purse, are believed to be the first Ebola patients treated in the United States.
[...]
The relief groups have said the condition of each aid worker improved in Liberia after the pair received an experimental drug developed by a San Diego-based private biotech firm and previously tested only in monkeys.

Bruce Johnson, president of SIM USA, said he did not know if Writebol and Brantly would get more of the drug at Emory, and representatives for Samaritan's Purse and the hospital declined to comment on specific treatments.
[...]
Johnson said it was still unknown how Writebol contracted Ebola. A longtime missionary from Charlotte, North Carolina, Writebol had been working for SIM USA as a hygienist who decontaminated protective suits worn by healthcare workers inside an isolation unit at a Monrovia treatment center.

I still doubt this is going to turn into a major epidemic, certainly outside West Africa, but there are signs that I might be wrong.

Picking up fast in Monrovia.

MONROVIA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Ebola virus has killed 268 people in Liberia including 37 healthcare workers, Assistant Health Minister for Preventive Services Tolbert Nyenswah said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, nurses and health workers has abandoned most health facilities in the country. A Xinhua reporter in the capital city of Monrovia said a dead body is found on the streets almost everyday.

Sierra Leone observes one day stay at home

FREETOWN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Freetown, the capital and the entire Sierra Leone was on Monday like a "ghost town" as residents of the west african state observed a one day "Stay Home" proclaimed by the President for people to "reflect, pray and educate" family members on the Ebola virus.

All shops and offices were closed for stock taking on the disease, traffic was at a stand still with no vehicle movement except essential staffs who were going around sensitizing the people on the dangers of the disease. All radio stations throughout the country including the national broadcaster dedicated the entire day on educating and sensitizing its listeners on the disease.

In a radio broadcast on Monday, the President reminded his compatriots that "I declared today a national stay at home day for family reflection, education and prayers on the outbreak of ebola.

He said "we set up this day because of our conviction that as a nation of families, the family is the key to our fight against the ebola disease". He said as a government they have scaled up the fight and so asked his compatriots to scale his or her effort against the ebola disease.

"In this fight if every single individual or community or town fails to act, the risk to our society will increase." This is why the Head of State urged his people that whoever is informed must "educate every other member of the family".

He went further to say "it is very necessary to get those with the virus to the treatment center not only to prevent others from contracting the virus but also increases their chances of survival".

To see the effect of the proclamation by the President, Xinhua together with other correspondents hired a vehicle to the headquarter of the south, Bo, and observed that the 260 kilometres was completely abandoned, there was no vehicle on the road except health workers or small gatherings of four or five as the car went by.
