New Age COINTELPRO and the Optimism Gestapo
by Jaye Beldo

Why has there not been a mass transformation of consciousness, culminating in peace on earth, as so many promised back in the early days of the New Age movement? The answer is that there may be a metaphysical COINTELPRO at work, all under the cover of love and light.

Most people remember COINTELPRO from the days of the Black Panthers, Yippies, and other revolutionary groups who threatened our government during the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war. Sensing that these groups might incite American citizens into radical action, the FBI sent in agents to agitate members of these various groups, often pitting them against each other through various forms of subterfuge, such as blackmail.

It appears that the CIA, FBI, and NSA are now sending their goons into the metaphysical marketplace, making sure that people who think they are aspiring to higher and positively transformative things are, in reality, only becoming more self-indulgent, disconnected, and confused.

The biggest influx of these agents occurred during the blossoming of the "human potential" movement in the early '70s, through such institutions as Esalen. Legions of people threw away their protest banners and followed their bliss during a time when directly addressing the socio-political problems of the day was imperative.

Since then, the emphasis on personal development—and more recently, the You Create Your Own Reality movement—a significant segment of the population has been brainwashed into disdaining all socio-political issues. For what better way to disempower people than to have them focus on their personal evolution at the expense of their families, communities, and the countries they live in?

Metaphysical Double-Speak

Probably the most flagrant examples of New Age COINTELPRO are channelers who convey disturbing messages from supposedly highly evolved discarnate entities. For example, when the war in Iraq first started in 2003, a well-known channeler in Santa Fe, NM, who channels the ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet, allegedly claimed that the war was an "ultimate expression of [Sekhmet's] compassion for the human race." It would take a considerable amount of gullibility to swallow this kind of nonsense, but swallow it the New Agers did.

With such multidimensional "logic" at hand, practically any injustice, whether torture, environmental destruction, or manipulation of the economy by global powers, can be justified as an act of compassion. This is no different from the theocratic stance of George W. Bush when he said that God told him to invade Iraq! Such metaphysical double-speak is dangerous, yet is nevertheless seeping into popular culture.

Of course, not all channelers are working for the shadow government. Rather, we should use much discernment in regard to channeled information. If channeled information through predictions of global cataclysm, for instance, creates fear and makes us feel ungrounded, unsure, and mistrusting, then it probably is coming from a COINTELPRO source and should be taken with an immense grain of salt.

The Optimism Gestapo

However, perhaps the most insidious aspect of the New Age movement is what I call the Optimism Gestapo, or those who regulate and insist on positive thinking by any means necessary, where any criticism or expression of negative or painful emotions are disdained.

I once brought up to an Ashtar Command "ascencionist" (i.e. someone who believes that extraterrestrials will come and save her), the fact that democratic senator Paul Wellstone may have been murdered in order to get republican Norm Coleman elected. Before I could elaborate, she cut me off by saying, "It was just his time." She was intolerant of the fact that I dared interfere with the reality she was creating, free of conspiracy, cutthroat politicians, and skullduggery. And the more I have played devil's advocate with New Agers, the more I have discovered that such intolerance is the norm. For there currently is a belief amongst New Agers that anything negative that one expresses will only further magnetize negativity. However, those who pursue this line of thinking just end up repressing their negative emotions, only to have them burst forth in uncontrollable ways.

As an example, I once was in a massage therapist's office proofreading a manuscript for him. I was reading how he had a deep respect for his Japanese ancestors who originated the massage techniques he used in his practice. The phone rang and I heard him say, "Just dial 911," then slammed the phone down. He then turned to me and explained, "That was my wife. My kid just fell down some stairs. I can't deal with it."

On the surface, the massage therapist conveyed an aura of humaneness and caring, all the while repressing his shadow side, as evidenced by his coldness towards his wife and child. Dr. Carl Jung recognized the danger of such repression and recommended confronting the nether-regions of our psyches—primarily through dream work—as a way of achieving healthy psychological equilibrium.

Anyone seeking a supportive metaphysical community should first ask themselves if their ability to think independently is being compromised. For keeping one's metaphysical radar functioning is most important in a world crawling with "forced cheer" gurus, COINTELPRO channelers, and self-help authors.

That chimed with me AD

Postby slow_dazzle » Tue Jan 01, 2008 2:22 pm

I get really annoyed at the dreamy eyed New Agers who think it'll all be just fine if we tune into the field of the healing crystals or go and live next to Glastonbury. Theses people tend (in my experience) to be dilettante, rich kids and not those people who don't have the luxury of time and money to spend playing silly games.

And the "tune in, turn on, drop out" mentality really gets up my nose. Stupid twats. I often wonder whether the concept was deliberately fostered to prevent any real action during the 1960's.

Spirituality? Yes, absolutely. New Age guff? I call bullshit on the dilettantes. We might get out of this mess if we all try, "try" being the word to stress. We sure as hell won't get anywhere by fucking around with the vapid nonsense that is the stock in trade of the healing crystal idiots.

What organisation introduced Leary to LSD...?

I know it wasn't a private dealer. I think his dealer was in the public sector.

This is interesting on alot of levels. I was reminded of E. Michael Jones critique of the Quakers and their "gentle persuasion" techniques.

Also I am reading a book on Communists (mostly Chinese Communists) use of criticsm and self criticsm on individuals and groups. I was under the impression Chinese Communists officials would be wary of too much discussion (open discussion yes), but it seems they thrived on endless cristiquings of each other and themselves. It reminded me of alot of the corporate psychology and trainings that are so popular, and stray into spiritualism.

Another example of this New Age blind optimism is the so called "Secret" to success and happiness, which also seems to tie in with the latest trend in pseudo-intellectual interpretations of quantum mechanics.

I know some of these blind optimists who think that the disparity between the rich and the poor is actually a result of The Secret, meaning that those who are poor are doing something wrong, namely that they are not thinking positively enough to allow for material wealth to manifest in their lives... what rubbish. This notion not only justifies the inequity, by putting the blame on the poor themselves, but it also ignores the sinister forces at work, including the parasites who exploit and murder others so they may be massively and criminally wealthy.

I think another subset/branch of this thinking is "pessimistic optimism", in which far left progressives have given up on fixing anything, given up on preventing the shit from hitting the fan, given up on undermining/overtaking the elite puppetmasters, and now just focus on living as an "example of how to live" and maybe surviving in the wilderness or on the fringe of whatever civilization will exist. It's a tragic way of thinking, and ultimately a selfish irresponsible cowardly way of thinking. And it's spreading. I have no problem with having a backup plan to try to escape, but only planning to "just live life and return to nature" = 100% doomed. I think that mentality is connected to the new age spiritualistic crap.

It's hilarious that the "Secret" is a dumbed down version of already dumbed down positive thinking rubbish (Norman Vincent Peale, etc.), yet people still act as if it's worthy of consideration. But in a world where the "Newspaper of Record" can hire a proven charlatan like Bill Kristol, anything is possible...

I see this too. It's quite escapist, not just in the heading to the wilderness scenario, but also in the disconnecting of one's life from your brothers and sisters.

This whole self-help philosophy is just part of the narrative of capitalism.

- Nothing exists but the atomistic individual.

- There is no society (Margaret Thatcher)

It’s all just used as an excuse to justify the elite’s war on poor and working people. They want us to think that poor people are poor because they’re lazy and stupid. The guy who drives a bus 12 hours a day and still can’t make ends meet for himself or his family is just not ambitious or smart enough. The woman who got raped just brought it upon herself. The black guy who was beaten to death by cops just should have stayed in his own neighborhood. Everyone who is disenfranchised brought it on themselves.

On the other hand, rich people are just wonderful. They “earned” it. They had goals. They “worked hard”. Self-made they are. God loves them.

What I love most about these self-help clowns is that they all act as if there’s nothing at all wrong with the world except ourselves.

I always assumed the Secret was figuring out the way to get born into a wealthy and politically-well-connected family.

Barbara Bush (the elder): “I don’t want to clutter my beautiful mind thinking about the death and destruction in Iraq.”

Complete agreements with your sentiments.

It's not so much connected to the New Age crowd, as it seems to be with suburban young adults. It's those kids who haven't had their minds totally warped by pop culture and education, that feel as though their only salvation will be found on some "off the grid" communal farm in the prairies, where they can be free from the mess that civilization has become. And why not? Why should they be left to clean up the mess of generations past? Wouldn't it be nice to just work the land, smoke the finest weed, and sing songs around the campfire each day? We all wish to taste la dolce vida. But alas, we are indeed screwed if all of us just want to run away to some log cabin, to let the rest clean up the mess.

I think these are excellent points!

I would add the following:

1. The "Far Left" does not have a franchise on this sort of thinking. There are plenty of right-wing survivalists, and also new age cultists with bad politics and/or no politics, who are preparing for individual solutions to societal collapse, primarily, or only...

2. Two very popular figures on the US side of Cascadia, where I used to live, are John Zerzan and Derrick Jensen. Both use the spectre of looming apocalypse to leverage their agenda, and I don't really agree with either in this regard. They both say, or imply, that the upcoming holocaust justifies extreme tactics, NOW. I do not feel this promotes the nuanced thinking about strategy and tactics that we need, now and for the long-term.

Indeed, a goodly number of sincere young activists have been arrested for underground crimes against property in support of Earth Liberation and/or Animal Liberation. Many of them have rolled over for the State, and others are facing spending most of their lives in jail. Zerzan and Jensen, whatever their intentions, have some responsibility in this matter, as far as I am concerned...

What if the world didn't end tomorrow? That is the way we have to live- that we are in it for the long haul and in it to win it- not by finding some magical solution, but by what we do each day. Organizing together to build a mass movement, one that changes the institutions of society, we can make a better world. It will not be easy, but this is the best way we can survive: to create change...

It may be the only "right thing to do", but it is hardly fair for those generations who have had the situation forced upon them. It also seems to be the most impossible, when considering the fact that the mess keeps getting perpetually worse and worse, and how the dominant mantra has become "we are all fucked". And to give creedence to the topic at hand, we are indeed fucked if the bad is all we focus on.

But, perhaps the "right thing to do" is in fact to withdraw from the mess, and start anew. Our current model for society is based on an illusion of scarcity, hence the great disparity between the elite class and the poor. What if the next generation did decide to reject that model of false scarcity, and instead, work on a model that is based on sustainability and abundance. Perhaps those kids who are yearning to live the idyllic fantasy, will be the ones who actually do make sustainability and abundance a viable option. "To fight the empire is to become infected by its derangement." No amount of force can change the status quo, so it's tough to say what is the best solution really is. But you're right Fourthbase, to simply want to escape everything is no solution, instead, we need to want to change things.

Errrr, well I guess I'm guilty of being pessimistic myself, because I do think the shit's going to hit the fan, I think the tiny group of elites in charge will have bunkers in which to survive and the technology to eradicate any threats to their plan, and in that case starting anew on the outskirts is not an option. It has a, say, 0.00000000000000000001% chance of working. Versus a, say, 1% chance of fighting them (non-violently) now. We have numbers on our side, they are theoretically outnumbered 1,000,000-to-1. But once the shit hits the fan, once our numbers are eliminated, once there is real scarcity, we will have nothing on our side but a faint glimmer of dumb luck. They will still have satellites, etc. There will be no "outskirt" beyond their reach. If we have any chance at all, we have to expose them, and get everyone who's not them to overrun them, now. There is no pleasant way to try and save ourselves. There is no safe, or easy, or indecisive, or self-absorbed way. If you are aware of the stakes and decide to "just live your life" then you are dooming your family to a miserable death, and therefore you are a sad, wretched human being. We are fucked, if "fucked" means being trapped in a nearly-impossible corner. (Just like the 2004 Red Sox.) It is wholly irrelevant whether we asked to be alive now or not. We are. End of discussion. It's wholly irrelevant whether it's fair for people born in the late 20th century to be the generation that has the last chance to fix the mess older generations created/allowed. We are. End of discussion. Throughout history, good people got themselves killed in the hope of saving humanity from its worst elements, saving us, saving our descendents. And our generation is just going to enjoy itself and let the world be destroyed, and let the evil motherfuckers proliferate and represent the face of humanity into eternity? Fuck that.
