Keywords: advertising, COINTELPRO, psy-ops, torture, orange, hijacking

Disrupting social movements is a specialty of the FBI and CIA using confusing COINTELPRO tactics.

I think a snack ad campaign was used to mask a campaign to end US torture and close Guantanamo Bay.

I've found examples of national advertising campaigns being used for government psychological operations going back to atleast 1964. Visibility in a benign context makes advertising an effective place to nest keywords and themes.

Here's a 1968 Naval Postgraduate school paper on the similarities of psy-ops and advertising-
http://stinet.dtic.mil/oai/oai?verb=getRecord&metadataPrefix=html&identifier=AD0841104
This thesis demonstrates the formulation and use of a 'goal programming' model in optimizing the allocation of media for psychological operations. The parallels between advertising and psychological operations are outlined; particularly, those in connection with defining a product, specifying a target audience and measuring success.

I've written before about how big Madison Avenue ad campaigns have hijacked real and potential social activist slogans in the guise of being 'modern' and 'edgy.'

Like Coca-Cola's 'HUGO' drink peddled in Spanish language ads last summer. ("Chavez.")

Now that official dead US soldier #4000 is only a few weeks away and a military kangaroo tribunal based on torturing Gitmo prisoners is filling the 'news' talk, there is a battle for the symbol 'ORANGE' which is just as likely to be linked to a junk food as to the ACLU and international campaign against US torture and Guantanamo Bay.

Exactly at the time when the ACLU has an anti-Gitmo activist campaign using ORANGE clothes and ribbons, the junk food Cheetos creates a mirror ad campaign with a fake 'political movement' peaking three days before 'International Day to Shut Down Guantanamo. Cheetos even hijacked the record cover of a musician who wrote a song about torture, Frank Zappa.

This looks like more CIA advertising tricks shielding American youth from a social movement by mirroring it as much as possible.

Then there's the Orange Underground website which delivers its primary content in the form of a "we've hijacked the airways" style video (which changes a bit each time you view it) that explains the group's movement and leads to other items such as a poster which can be downloaded to spread the group's gospel. There's a fake news report covering the groups' Random Acts of Cheetos. There's a blog and a mysterious event that will occur on April Fool's Day.

JANUARY 11, 2008, was the six-year anniversary of the arrival of the first prisoners at Guantánamo Bay. On that day, activists gathered around the world to protest the prison, which has tarnished America's image and diminished our ideals. It is a symbol of torture, abuse, and injustice.

As long as Guantánamo continues to hold detainees, we'll be calling for its closure. We need your help. Download the CLOSE GUANTÁNAMO Toolkit now to find out how you can organize events at home, in your office, on campus, in your community, and online. Learn More About Guantánamo >>

ACLU prep for International Shut Down Guanatanamo Day - 1/11/08 ?

Cheetohs Orange Underground blog starts on 12/15/07 and
peaks with a USA Today full page add on 1/8/08,
three days before the ACLU anti-Gitmo day.

Drafting in the free advertising of the ACLU? Maybe.
But the POLITICAL TONE AND TIMING of the Cheetos campaign is a direct mirror of the ACLU and went to great lengths to eclipse the ACLU's campaign against Gitmo and torture.

But there's yet more hijacking by Cheetos.

Iconic anti-fascist musician, Frank Zappa, had a character on some of his record albums that looks exactly like this one that Cheetos has hijacked.
It was last known as "Cyborg" and a companion to a musician thrown into an American concentration camp. Aha again!
More importantly, Zappa wrote a song called...'THE TORTURE NEVER STOPS.'

Image

Zappa was the first one to teach me about the US-Nazi connection several decades ago, before the internet exposed Prescott Bush's financing of Hitler.

His avant-garde 1970 film, '200 Motels,' put the London Symphony Orchestra on a movie set designed to be a...
concentration camp.
And included that industrial vacuum cleaner, too.

And starred Beatle, RINGO STAR and award-winning Jewish performer, THEODOR BIKEL.
Both very heavy cats, nevermind the London Symphony Orchestra.

THIS is probably the reason for the Cheeto hijacking of Zappa's surrounded by famous and credible icons to deflect away from "things that might remind us of US, torture, camps, and Nazis."

THE CAST

Larry the Dwarf.....Ringo Starr (Beatles' drummer)
.....
Rance Muhammitz (the devil).....Theodore Bikel (Jewish singer and actor)
.....
The Industrial Vacuum Cleaner.....Dick Barber (The Mothers road manager)

Smells like fascist mendacity to me. Just LOOK at the timing of Cheeto's new ad campaign on the BLOG that goes with it.

Remember, January 11 = ACLU Day of Protest to wear ORANGE against Gitmo.
Cheetos is all over this grabbing the spotlight with youth.

Remember a RAoC can be a prank, a stunt, a game, an arts and crafts project, or anything else that you make of it. (That's why it's called a random act, sucka!) It can be long or short. Rough or polished. Deliciously spontaneous or meticulously planned. Only thing it can't do is break the Rules of RAoC. So don't.

These people are really devious, using junk food ads to hide anti-torture activism.

Not coincidently, disrupting social movements is an FBI COINTELPRO "greatest hit"-

http://mediafilter.org/MFF/USDCO.PsyWar.html

Disinformation to Prevent or Disrupt Movement Meetings and Activities:

A favorite COINTELPRO tactic uncovered by Senate investigators was to advertise a non-existent political event, or to misinform people of the time and place of an actual one. They reported a variety of disruptive FBI "dirty tricks" designed to cast blame on the organizers of movement events.

In one "disinformation" case, the [FBI's] Chicago Field Office duplicated blank forms prepared by the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam ("NMC") soliciting housing for demonstrators at the Democratic National Convention. Chicago filled out 217 of these forms with fictitious names and addresses and sent them to the NMC, which provided them to demonstrators who made "long and useless journeys to locate these addresses." The NMC then decided to discard all replies received on the housing forms rather than have out-of-town demonstrators try to locate nonexistent addresses. (The same program was carried out when the Washington Mobilization Committee distributed housing forms for demonstrators coming to Washington for the 1969 Presidential inaugural ceremonies.)

In another case, during the demonstrations accompanying inauguration ceremonies, the Washington Field Office discovered that NMC marshals were using walkie-talkies to coordinate their movements and activities. WFO used the same citizen band to supply the marshals with misinformation and, pretending to be an NMC unit, countermanded NMC orders.

In a third case, a [Bureau] midwest field office disrupted arrangements for state university students to attend the 1969 inaugural demonstrations by making a series of anonymous telephone calls to the transportation company. The calls were designed to confuse both the transportation company and the SDS leaders as to the cost of transportation and the time and place for leaving and returning. This office also placed confusing leaflets around the campus to show different times and places for demonstration-planning meetings, as well as conflicting times and dates for traveling to Washington.

This struggle against KANGAROO COURTS was happening during Vietnam War days.

FOREWORD

by

Philip Berrigan #14850-056
Federal Correctional Institution at Petersburg 1996-1997
Federal Correctional Institution at Elkton 2001

My suspicions about human law go back 30 years. They began with the trial of The Baltimore 4 following Dr. King's assassination in April, 1968. Our effort, in October 1967, was one of many raids on Selective Service -- some say over 100 -- both standby and covert.

In the Baltimore 4 trial, the federal judge enforced a narrow focus -- did we do the resistance act we admitted doing against the genocidal debacle in Southeast Asia? He suppressed "why" we did it, except by our testimony, which the prosecutor dismissed contemptuously as misguided, even adolescent. But no expert testimony reached the jury about search and destroy operations, napalm, cluster bomb units, Agent Orange, Phoenix Program assassinations, millions of Indochinese dead, the risks of nuclear war against China and the Soviet Union.

I witnessed for the first time an American Court fabricating a legal railroad -- what we call a kangaroo court. On reflection it was pitiful -- a court exposing itself like an exhibitionist snatching his raincoat open. But despite the shameful (and shameless) spectacle, the judge initiated a pattern scrupulously followed for 30 years, departing again from the initial concept of The Founders -- protection of the people against the government and powerful. The judge did the exact opposite -- he protected the government and military against the people.

Such legal machinations are insidious -- they effectively strip people of any non-violent redress against "their" government. We should recall that Thoreau called legal dissent "consent" since he apparently believed that tolerating legal dissent by the regime strengthened its credibility (and injustice). In brief, the government imposes an enormously effective deterrent -- "break the law and you'll go to prison!"

As the years passed and my arrests mounted, setting up a revolving door between prison and "minimum security," I feverishly researched material on law and the judiciary. I read Thomas Merton who likened the legality of Christ's execution -- "we have a law and according to this law he must die" (Jn 19:7) -- to the legality of nuclear war (Hiroshima and Nagasaki and subsequent doomsday adventures). This time, Merton wrote, the death sentence is passed on humankind, The Body of Christ.

Zappa - 'The Torture Never Stops'

Postby Hugh Manatee Wins » Tue Feb 12, 2008 10:23 pm

"That's what's the deal we're dealing in."

The Torture Never Stops
- Frank Zappa -

Flies all green 'n buzzin' in his dungeon of despair
Prisoners grumble and piss their clothes and scratch their matted hair
A tiny light from a window hole a hundred yards away
Is all they ever get to know about the regular life in the day;
An' it stinks so bad the stones been chokin'
'N weepin' greenish drops
In the room where the giant fire puffer works
'N the torture never stops
The torture never stops

Slime 'n rot, rats 'n snot 'n vomit on the floor
Fifty ugly soldiers, man, holdin' spears by the iron door
Knives 'n spikes 'n guns 'n the likes of every tool of pain
An' a sinister midget with a bucket an' a mop where the blood goes down the drain;

An' it stinks so bad the stones been chokin'
'N weepin' greenish drops
In the room where the giant fire puffer works
'N the torture never stops
The torture never stops
The torture
The torture
The torture never stops.

Flies all green 'n buzzin' in his dungeon of despair
An evil prince eats a steamin' pig in a chamber right near there
He eats the snouts 'n the trotters first
The loin's 'n the groin's is soon dispersed
His carvin' style is well rehearsed
He stands and shouts
All men be cursed
All men be cursed
All men be cursed
All men be cursed
And disagree, well no-one durst
He's the best of course of all the worst
Some wrong been done, he done it first

(Well, well) An' he stinks so bad, his bones been chokin'
(Yeah) 'N weepin' greenish drops,
(Well) In the night of the iron sausage,
(Well) Where the torture never stops
The torture never stops
The torture
The torture
The torture never stops.

Flies all green 'n buzzin' in his dungeon of despair
Who are all those people that he's locked away up there
Are they crazy?,
Are they sainted?
Are they zeros someone painted?,
It has never been explained since at first it was created
But a dungeon like a sin
Requires naught but lockin' in
Of everything that's ever been
Look at hers
Look at him
That's what's the deal we're dealing in
That's what's the deal we're dealing in
That's what's the deal we're dealing in
That's what's the deal we're dealing in

Are you moonlighting as a writer for the Onion?

I'm a big Zappa fan, and what you're saying here is inane. "The Torture Never Stops" is from Zoot Allures (1976). And how in the name of sanity is that relevant to Cheetos?

If you're referring to Sy Borg, from Joe's Garage Acts II and III (1979), I have never seen an actual image of him/it on any of Zappa's albums, and the character only appears on Joe's Garage II and III. Zappa describes Sy Borg as a "cross between an industrial vacuum cleaner and a chrome plated piggy bank with marital aids stuck all over it." The Cheetos vacuum cleaner looks like... a vacuum cleaner.

And Joe isn't thrown into an "American concentration camp." He goes to prison after he participates in an orgy with Sy and a modified Gay-Bob doll (he gives Sy Borg a golden shower, which shorts out his master circuit). He can't pay for the damages, so he's tossed in prison, where he is raped by musicians and record company execs (including Bald-Headed John: King of the Plookers).

One more time, with emphasis:

Just because YOU make connections between something IN YOUR MIND, does not mean that THOSE CONNECTIONS EXIST OUTSIDE OF YOUR HEAD.

Joe's Garage is, however, a sharp satirical jab at the music industry, the Catholic church, and Scientology (L. Ron Hoover and the First Church of Appliantology). Plus, it's a smokin' album, with some of Zappa's best music.

At least get your facts straight if you're going to propose outlandish connections.

Zappa = anti-US camps and torture

I stated that clearly in the op. Go...read.

I'm suggesting that the Cheetos 'Orange Underground' ad campaign may very well have been designed to mirror and occlude the ACLU's use of orange as an anti-torture anti-Gitmo movement focus on not just January 11, but the whole Spring 2008 semester when this Gitmo kangaroo court is going into gear to counter dead US soldier #4000 and even anti-torture activism during the 2008 (s)election season.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. Timing and themes match up and ad campaigns have been used as political psy-ops before.

And TORTURE is the single most inflammatory political topic today.

But when Zappa is hijacked, too. That's a clincher.
Zappa wrote songs about American concentration camps, USG Nazis, and torture all his long career. If you're a fan, you know that American fascism was his primary political theme from 1965 until his death.

'Concentration Moon' from 'We're Only In It for the Money,' right?

No, an industrial vacuum cleaner. Go look inside 'Chunga's Revenge.' Spittin' image.

The rest of your comments about "an American prison" are nit-picky and in no way change Zappa's exposure of the USG as fascist torturers.

Too bad that I wasn't aware of this Gitmo/Cheeto connection before the fact. Because then I would have reverse keyword hijacked it. Oh well, maybe some other wise soul who also pays attention to fast food promotional gimicks did...

...so out of curiosity, I searched "Orange underground" on youtube for this keyword hijacking, and the first user generated RAoC says the following...

"Cheetos are vomit in a bag. Eating one bag is 160 percent of recommended daily fat intake... Plus the MSG in them make you think they taste good....WHEN THEY REALLY DONT.... PLUS PROTEST THE WAR if you want to stick it to the man...."

Not to mention that it didn't generate any interest at least YouTube-wise.

Well, your definition of clear must be different from mine.

I'm not nitpicking at all, just pointing out the absurd stretches equating the use of a vacuum cleaner drawing in a stupid Cheetos ad campaign with Frank Zappa's use of vacuum cleaner imagery. Zappa had a thing for vacuum cleaners, as some Zappa fans discuss here:

And when you say Zappa's character, Joe, is thrown into a CONCENTRATION CAMP, when in fact, he's thrown into a PRISON, my correcting you not nitpicky. It is indicative of your laziness and inattention that you care so little about facts.

But really, what you're saying is that the Cheetos ad campaign's use of a shop vacuum in an illustration is a direct, intentional hijacking Frank Zappa... because Zappa wrote songs and featured images of vacuum cleaners?

Great googly-moogly, do you realize how utterly insane that is?

ACLU:Cheetos thing = interesting, perhaps, but severely retarded.

By Manateean logic, anything popular, concurrent with the (now expired) civil action, and related to the color orange may be a hijacking of the ACLU campaign.

For instance, this obvious ABC (Mockingbird) News psyop, which was clearly intended to hijack the anti-Gitmo "orange" action:

Well, sad to say I wouldn't be shocked if Hugh used that story somehow...But that doesn't really relate to the ACLU:Cheetos thing. There are actual parallels there, and the timing is indeed very...timely.

You have to know how deeply the themes of the "ACLU:Cheetos thing" were embedded in the work of Zappa and that he is an INTERNATIONAL HERO for this.

Repeat: Zappa is an...international hero...for his messages about US nazi-ism and torture.

I recognized that industrial vacuum cleaner immediately. Will today's kids? Probably not.
So why do it? I dunno. Maybe someone was instructed to apply a Zappa-ism to Cheetos and that was what they came up with.

But it is absolutely a direct hijacking of a cartoony character from
Zappa's intricate narratives about sexuality, sadism, fascism, and torture.
As Pan just dumped and confirmed.

John Lennon is being portrayed as not a peace activist, but an IRA terrorist by disinfoteer Nick Redfern.

Zappa kept pointing at how Nazis and fascists and religious zealots and Republicans were all sexually repressed and prone to torture.

So portraying Zappa as instead a sex-obsessed deviant, and his lyrics were designed to push sexuality right in your face making it easy to do this, is an obvious tactic to point kids at instead of 'Concentration Moon.'

Note the strong element of sexuality as a weapon in the Gitmo treatment.
And US political wedge theater.
THEMATICALLY this all ties together consistently.

And Zappa video clips have become hot on YouTube for him warning of a fascist theocracy in the US.

Plus this is not an isolated case. The Beatles are getting hijacked, too.
Disney (CIA for kidz!) has been hijacking images from the Beatles' Yellow Submarine movie.
>The 'Finding Nemo' sub rides - the 'nuclear subs' repainted yellow
>The character called 'Mole' in 'Atlantis.'

There are SO many examples of keywords and images and themes that are anti-fascist being hijacked and used for pro-fascist media.

Think these Zappa lyrics have any relevency to the protests of 2008?

Concentration Moon
by Frank Zappa (1967)
Concentration Moon
Over the camp in the valley
Concentration Moon
Wis I was back in the alley
With all of my friends,
Still running free:
Hair growing out
Every hole in me
AMERICAN WAY
How did it start?
Thousands of creeps
Killed in the park
AMERICAN WAY
Try and explain
Scab of a nation
Driven insane
Don't cry
Gotta go bye bye
SUDDENLY: DIE DIE
COP KILL A CREEP!
pow pow pow

Concentration Moon
Over the camp in the valley
Concentration Moon
Wish I was back in the alley
With all of my friends,
Still running free:
Hair growing out
Every hole in me
AMERICAN WAY
Threatened by US
Drag a few creeps
Away in a bus
AMERICAN WAY
Prisoner: lock
SMASH EVERY CREEP
IN THE FACE WITH A ROCK

Don't cry
Gotta go bye bye
SUDDENLY: DIE DIE
COP KILL A CREEP!
pow pow pow
CIA runs mainstream media since WWII:
news rooms, movies/TV, publishing
...
Disney is CIA for kidz!

Hey Hugh, check out these two clips:
The first is Frank on the Monkees – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgNxuNaYHsk

i like the way Frank (or is it Mike) whips the car!!

Now here is a Beatle and some Monkees selling Cheese! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwRjdYTYrKk

Then you said, “There are SO many examples of keywords and images and themes that are anti-fascist being hijacked and used for pro-fascist media.”

"if you want to defeat your enemy, sing his song" - right?

Hugh. Dude.

It behooves you to pick your battles.
The Zappa thing here is beyond weak.
You're right about him being somebody they'd target...
But the example here is just pure over-imagination on your part.

Meanwhile, you've got a rare putative example of KH that might actually have "stickiness", and you're letting it rot. You're feeding your critics with the Zappa shit, and they're eating it up and deservedly mocking you for it, and the legit thing you brought up is getting ignored. Fucking priorities dude. Put down the Zappa shit for now. Bring it up later. But cut bait, man. You've got a bigger fish (perhaps an actual fish) nibbling on another line, and the pole is slipping off the boat.
