UK top cop who led CIA probe found dead

By ROB HARRIS, Associated Press Writer

MANCHESTER, England - A city police chief who led an investigation into charges that Britain cooperated with secret CIA flights to transport terrorism suspects without formal proceedings has been found dead, his deputy said Tuesday.

Manchester Chief Constable Michael Todd, 50, was found dead in Snowdonia, about 240 miles northwest of London, Deputy Chief Constable Dave Whatton said. He had been missing since going out for a walk Monday during his day off.

Whatton said the body, which was found Tuesday afternoon, had not yet been formally identified but he believed it was Todd.

He said a coroner's inquest would investigate the cause of death and did not give any further details.

Todd was elected vice president of the Association of Chief Police Officers of England and Wales in 2006, according to a biography on his Web site.

The association gave him the task of looking into accusations that Britain allowed the CIA to use the country's airports to fly terrorism suspects to other countries without any extradition hearings, a clandestine procedure known as "extraordinary rendition."

Todd's investigation concluded last June that there was no evidence to back the claim. Last month, however, Britain admitted one of its remote outposts in the Indian Ocean had twice been used by the United States as a refueling stop for the secret transfer of two terrorism suspects.

He and his wife had a daughter and twin sons.

Gouda: Wasnt an italian telecoms/intelligence specialist involved in the rendition affair / penetration of Italian intelligence by foreign interests also ... fallen off a bridge?

I dont remember his name, but he was the guy who found out the phones the CIA agents used when they snathed that cleric out of Italy...

If someone remembers, please inform :)

Apparently unrelated, but still:

Camilla shocked after her head of security shoots himself dead

The Duchess of Cornwall was stunned yesterday after her head of security shot himself dead at his home.

Camilla and Prince Charles, who are on a tour of the Caribbean, were on their yacht Leander when they were told of the suicide of Sergeant Richard Fuller, 55.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said: "The Duchess of Cornwall was very saddened."

The police officer was found dead at home near Calne, Wilts, yesterday morning.

It is thought he had used his privately-owned shotgun rather than a police weapon.

He lived with his wife Jill, 45, and their three children - Jennifer, 21, Daniel, 19, and Stephanie, 18. They were said to be baffled by his death.

A source close to Camilla said: "This is terrible news. She's deeply shocked and upset.

"The duchess had a good working relationship with him.

"She is obviously upset for his wife and family."

A friend said: "He seemed happy, without any obvious issues weighing him down, but he was coming up to retirement." In 2006, he was cleared by a court of using unnecessary force to arrest a radio ham.

The incident was reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission but Sgt Fuller was not thought to have been reprimanded.

He was in charge of security at Camilla's six-bedroom country home, set in 27 acres of grounds. Camilla bought Ray Mill House in Wiltshire for £850,000 in 1996 after her divorce from husband Andrew Parker Bowles.

The house was used for the wedding reception for Camilla's daughter Laura Parker Bowles and her husband Harry Lopes less than two years ago.

The duchess rarely stayed there but insisted on keeping a round-the-clock team of armed security officers, led by Sgt Fuller, costing taxpayers £2.6million a year.

Wiltshire's Assistant Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: "I can confirm that an investigation is taking place into the sudden death of a police officer at an address near Calne.

"The officer was a highly regarded member of the force and will be sadly missed by his colleagues and friends in Wiltshire police.

"Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time."

Sgt Fuller had served 29 years with Wiltshire police and was chief firearms instructor at their headquarters in Devizes.

In 1995, he received a crown court commendation after he arrested an armed man, who was threatening a colleague. He was awarded a long service and good conduct medal in 2001.

Why, yes. Adamo Bove. The Abu Omar rendition investigations.

Two Strange Deaths in European Wiretapping Scandal

Just after noon on Friday, July 21, Adamo Bove -- head of security at Telecom Italia, the country's largest telecommunications firm -- told his wife he had some errands to run as he left their Naples apartment. Hours later, police found his car parked atop a freeway overpass. Bove's body lay on the pavement some 100 feet below.

But in this case, Todd is dead after exonerating the CIA/UK?

Weird - look at the UK version on Yahoo

Manchester police chief found dead

How very strange. Two arms of the same company report the same story in very different ways, even down to the titles of the articles. No mention of rendition in the UK version. Hmmm?

Do you think we might be seeing an accelerating roll-up of People Who Know Too Much, for some reason?

This death. Whomever knows whatever in the Jersey power elite. Spitzer. And, I just noted, the judge in Colorado who presided over the Qwest/Nacchio insider trading trial is implicated in a scandal involving an escort service the IRS took out in January.

I haven't looked into that one yet. But it's reminiscent, on a superficial level, of the Special Services Staff.

It's very vague, I know. Seems like a speed-up, though.

Oh my word. That Colorado judge on the Qwest case is simply deranged. I take back the implication that he was set up, and submit this link in its stead:

Sat around chambers looking at porn and dismissing suits without reading them, apparently.

And so many of us wonder why our elected reps never seem to want to take on these factions .......

The "Bill Hicks" moment.

Danny Casolaro.

Gary Webb.

And the granddaddy of them all -- JFK.

(followed by RFK of course)

How do you go up against that? Well .... in most cases ... you don't.
