Fox News Sources: Gretchen Carlson Wasn’t The First Roger Ailes Victim
“He told me that if he was thinking of hiring a woman, he’d ask himself if he would fuck her, and if he would, then he’d hire her to be on-camera.”

WASHINGTON ― Some Fox News on-air personalities are unsurprised by the news that former host Gretchen Carlson has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes.

“We thought it would happen after she was taken off of ‘Fox & Friends,’” said one Fox News source who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. “She kept quiet because Roger gave her the afternoon show, but everyone at Fox knew it was eventually coming. He hated her and would tell people that she was ‘a crazy, vindictive bitch.’”

Other sources inside Fox confirmed that Carlson had first threatened to file the lawsuit after Ailes removed her as a host of “Fox & Friends.” But sources say Carlson held off on filing a suit when Ailes agreed to give her the afternoon show.

Carlson was a host of the popular “Fox & Friends” morning program from 2006 until 2013, but was allegedly removed from the show after complaining about her male co-host Steve Doocy. (Disclosure: I was a Fox News contributor from 2014 to 2015.)

COURT DOCUMENT
An excerpt from Carlson’s lawsuit describes the hostile work environment allegedly created by Fox host Steve Doocy.
In the suit, Carlson alleges that she was mocked by Ailes for complaining about unequal treatment by male colleagues, and that she was demoted to the afternoon show with reduced pay as retaliation. Carlson also claims that Ailes demanded sex as a way to improve her standing at Fox News and told her to “turn around so he could view her posterior.”

Carlson’s not the only woman to accuse Ailes of such behavior. One female Fox News contributor, who asked to remain anonymous, said that she had a similar encounter with Ailes.

“He asked me to turn around so he can see my ass,” the contributor said, describing one of her meetings with the chairman.

Another Fox News employee, who likewise asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, said that Ailes told her she could only wear dresses on air. She also described a story that she said Ailes often told about his hiring process for on-camera personalities.

“He always brags to people about how he doesn’t do polling or testing when he chooses his on-air talent. He told me that if he was thinking of hiring a woman, he’d ask himself if he would fuck her, and if he would, then he’d hire her to be on-camera,” the employee said. “He then said if it was a man he’d think about whether he could sit down for a baseball game with him and not get annoyed of him. If he could, then he’d hire him.”

Carlson’s lawsuit, which was filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey, alleges that she was eventually fired for refusing Ailes’ sexual advances.

UPDATE: 7 p.m. ― Carlson’s attorney, Nancy Erika Smith, told CNNMoney Wednesday that Ailes’ harassment was “very consistent and very pervasive.”

In the hours since Carlson’s lawsuit was announced, “at least 10” other women have contacted Smith’s law firm wanting to speak about Ailes’ alleged behavior, according to a spokesman for the firm.

Fox News announced that it would be conducting an internal review of the allegations against Ailes and Doocy.

In a statement, Ailes insisted that Carlson’s claims were false and accused her of bringing the suit as retaliation for having her contract terminated. “This defamatory lawsuit is not only offensive, it is wholly without merit and will be defended vigorously,” the statement read.

Report: Murdochs have decided to remove Roger Ailes
By ALEX WEPRIN 07/18/16 01:06 PM EDT
New York magazine's Gabriel Sherman is reporting that Rupert Murdoch and his sons Lachlan and James have decided to remove Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, following a sexual harassment lawsuit by former anchor Gretchen Carlson.
Sherman reports, citing anonymous sources, that the three are in agreement that Ailes needs to step down, but that there is disagreement over timing--namely whether it happens during or after the Republican National Convention.
According to Sherman, attorneys at Paul, Weiss are now conducting interviews with current and former Fox News staff in their offices "because of concerns that the Fox offices are bugged."
Sherman reports that the Murdochs reached their decision after reviewing preliminary results of the Paul, Weiss investigation.
A Fox News spokesperson referred POLITICO to 21st Century Fox, and a 21st Century Fox spokesperson said that the company was declining to comment.

Another Ailes Spectacular—Second Amendment saga—erstwhile AP power-duo reunites
By JOE POMPEO 08/10/16 06:47 AM EDT
THE DAILY AILES -- The Roger Ailes scandal is ballooning into something much bigger than the initial sexual harassment allegations that ignited the controversy a little over a month ago. And those were big enough: In a little more than two weeks, they drove the longtime Fox News chief out of the cable news channel he spent 20 years molding into a media powerhouse for the right and a cash cow for parent company 21st Century Fox, which is controlled by Rupert Murdoch and his sons.
In the past few days alone, there have been reports of surveillance campaigns against journalists covering Ailes (http://nym.ag/2aDOHsD); Fox News employees who “believe our phones are tapped and that we are monitored” (http://cnnmon.ie/2aXbX4b); and incredulity that top brass at the publicly-traded 21st Century Fox were not until recently aware, as the company has said, of a $3.15 million exit package paid in 2011 to a former Fox News booker who claims Ailes manipulated and sexually harassed her for 20 years (http://on.ft.com/2aNm3Hr).
Story Continued Below
The question now being tossed around in the private conversations, Twitter exchanges, Gchats and Slack windows of the media-obsessed: How much more dirt is going to come out, and will this sordid affair eventually make the leap from scandalous to criminal? There’s been no smoking gun just yet, but there are specters. The whole thing’s beginning to feel a little Summer 2011, when the U.K. phone-hacking scandal that upended Murdoch’s other conglomerate, News Corp., was starting to catch fire. Here’s the latest that’s come across Morning Media’s desk ...
Dark arts: Ailes’ black ops tactics against New York magazine reporter and Ailes biographer Gabe Sherman were apparently more menacing than just online smears and negative Google ads. A source close to high-level Fox News executives told Morning Media that during a private conversation with Ailes at an event in the period when Sherman was reporting his 2014 book, “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” Ailes said to this source, “I know where he lives, and I'm gonna send people to beat the shit out of him.” (A second source within the Fox News orbit confirmed hearing the same account and a third said Ailes has said some version of this before.)
The first source also relayed a separate conversation (not with Ailes) in which the source was told, "If it ever came out," meaning the lengths Ailes went to in his campaign against Sherman, "multiple people at Fox would go to jail." There’s suspicion, sources said, that phone records were obtained illegally. At one point, Sherman and his wife explored the possibility of having their apartment swept for bugs, according to a source familiar with the matter. Ailes’ attorney, Susan Estrich, did not respond to requests for comment. Sherman declined to comment.
Sources also said that Peter J. Boyer, erstwhile New Yorker staff writer turned Fox News editor-at-large who was let go from the network two weeks ago (under circumstances reportedly unrelated to the Ailes matter) is finalizing an exit package. Boyer was present for a series of “war room” meetings in which Ailes and several consiglieres orchestrated a plan of attack against Sherman -- in other words, Boyer is said to know where bodies are buried. A source familiar with the matter said there’s “no doubt” Boyer has information that could be damaging to Ailes, but that he won’t be getting anything more than a “typical” severance package. Boyer didn’t return an email and a woman who answered the phone at his residence took a message. Fox News declined to comment.
Hush money: A media executive and Morning Media reader got in touch regarding Monday’s Financial Times article (http://on.ft.com/2aKiWlL) about the $3.15 million severance payment made to Laurie Luhn in 2011. The gist: “Corporate governance experts have questioned how Roger Ailes was able to use Fox News funds to buy the silence of a woman who complained about him, without it coming to the attention of Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, owner of the news network.”
Our tipster points out, “The parent company said they didn’t know about the settlement. That means the auditors didn’t know. Willful manipulation of financial documents [within] a publicly audited company is a crime. It’s a violation of securities law pretty clearly.” Translation: Will this shady payment, which Ailes reportedly directed in his former role as Fox News CEO, come back to haunt 21st Century Fox?
Reached for comment, a 21st Century Fox spokesman reiterated a statement given to the FT: “The fact is we have a robust compliance structure and strong controls embedded across our company. Within hours of the first public complaint raising an issue at Fox News, we commenced an investigation, and less than two weeks after that investigation began, the Chairman and CEO of Fox News departed.”
The NYPD factor: Another source and Morning Media reader pointed out: A notable aspect that’s escaped attention in the recent spate of Ailes coverage is his deep ties to the NYPD. This came to light in reports in 2011 and 2012 as well as in Sherman’s book. It seems all the more fascinating in the current context of assessing just how much power Ailes wielded, all the way up to NYPD intel guys who he was able to get to do countersurveillance work (meaning Ailes was worried people were conducting surveillance on him and he wanted the NYPD to surveil the alleged surveillance). Morning Media obtained a document that was prepared for an NYPD Intelligence Division team. It’s been made public before, but it’s worth reproducing here, for posterity if nothing else:
Name: Roger Ailes, President of Fox News Network
Residence: Cresskill New Jersey
Work: 1211 Ave of the Americas
Remarks: Request for counter surveillance from Threats Desk. Mr. Ailes employs a retired NYPD Detective as personal escort. He arrives via private Car and is dropped off daily in front of 1211 Ave of Americas daily between 7am and 9am. He is Escorted into building by his security and is met by building security.
At the request of Mr. Ailes his security is not to be notified. He is aware of the pending counter surveillance attempt. Lt. Chapman (917) xxx-xxxx will be notified of the times and dates before conducting counter surveillance.
Odds and ends:
-- "The Carlson team is still actively litigating, we’re not the source of any information regarding a settlement, of which we have no knowledge," a spokesperson for former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson told POLITICO yesterday. On Monday, Vanity Fair’s Sarah Ellison reported that 21st Century Fox has begun discussing an eight-figure settlement for Carlson's sexual harassment lawsuit and that the company wants Ailes to fund a portion of it. http://politi.co/2bhP6kn
-- CNN’s Brian Stelter revealed that when he was in college running the blog TV Newser, he went out with a low-level Fox News staffer. But she wasn’t looking for romance -- she was doing research on Stelter and reporting it back to Fox. Stelter clarified that this happened more than a decade ago, when infamous former Ailes lieutenant Brian Lewis was running Fox News PR. Fox isn’t commenting so far on Stelter’s story. http://mm4a.org/2aDYZHO

GHOST OF FOX NEWS PAST -- Josh Gerstein: “A looming First Amendment showdown drew closer Tuesday as a federal judge ordered conservative media host Glenn Beck to identify at least two confidential sources in connection with a defamation lawsuit stemming from Beck's reporting on the Boston Marathon bombing. The suit was filed by Saudi Arabian student Abdulrahman Alharbi, who was injured at the scene of the deadly bombings. Beck continued to link the Saudi national to the attacks even after U.S. officials said publicly he'd been cleared.
"U.S. District Court Judge Patti Saris ruled that Beck must disclose the names of two Department of Homeland Security employees who allegedly gave a Beck producer information backing up the radio and TV host's claim that Alharbi was the ‘money man’ behind the attack.” http://politi.co/2aKwXgl
‘THIS ISN’T A JOKE ANYMORE’ -- That’s the latest cover of the Daily News, which has made waves this election cycle for its strong, advocacy-oriented front page treatments, especially on gun-related matters. Today’s installment, of course, refers to Donald Trump’s infamous “Second Amendment” remark yesterday. “When Trump hinted gun-rights supporters shoot Hillary, he went from offensive to reckless. He must end his campaign. If he doesn’t, the GOP needs to abandon him.” http://bit.ly/2b59uHS
Brian Stelter: “Just three hours after Donald Trump raised the specter of violence against Hillary Clinton, referencing ‘second amendment people’ who might be able to stop Clinton, [Sean Hannity] had an exclusive interview with the candidate. So what did Hannity do? Did he seize this moment to challenge Trump? To denounce talk of political violence? No. He basically put words in Trump's mouth and blamed the media.” http://eepurl.com/ca5FsD
REVOLVING DOOR: Adam Goldman, a prominent national security reporter, is leaving The Washington Post for The New York Times, where he will cover the FBI, and where he will be reunited with Matt Apuzzo, a fellow national security reporter with whom Goldman shared a Pulitzer and a book deal when they worked together at the AP a few years ago, blowing the lid off the NYPD’s secret spy unit. (Woodward-and-Bernstein of the twenty-teens?) “Matt and I have worked closely together for years, and hopefully we’ll find some stories to work on together in the future,” Goldman told POLITICO (http://politi.co/2bhTiAU). GAWKER ‘BLOWOUT’: A big party at Gawker headquarters tonight was billed as a celebration of a 14-year “noble experiment” that will come to an end in a few more days as Gawker Media is sold to whoever wins the bidding for the bankrupt company. WSJ: “In the end, the creditor’s committee—led by representatives of former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, whose invasion-of-privacy legal victory forced Gawker and its founder Nick Denton to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection—decided not to object to the event because the cost is expected to be only $1,000.” That doesn’t buy a lot of booze; let’s hope someone else is chipping in too. http://on.wsj.com/2aAvc73

Andrea Tantaros sues Fox News, calling it a ‘sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult’

Another harassment suit filed against Ailes Play Video2:54
Former Fox News host Andrea Tantaros filed a lawsuit against the network, becoming the second host in two months to accuse former network chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment. (Erin Patrick O'Connor/The Washington Post)
By Paul Farhi August 23 at 11:09 AM
Former Fox News host Andrea Tantaros has filed a lawsuit against the network, claiming that she was sexually harassed by former network chairman Roger Ailes and that Ailes’s lieutenants punished her for her complaints.

Tantaros is the second on-air personality at Fox in the past two months to sue Ailes and others at the network for alleged harassment. Former “Fox and Friends” host Gretchen Carlson filed a suit against Ailes in early July, prompting his departure from the network he founded and shaped into a dominant media organization.

Tantaros, who had appeared on “The Five” and other Fox shows as a conservative commentator since 2010, echoed some of Carlson’s claims in her complaint, which was filed Monday in New York State Supreme Court.

[The fall of Roger Ailes: He made Fox News his ‘locker room’ — and now women are telling their stories]

Tantaros said it was routine practice for Ailes to call women, including her, into his office and ask them to turn around “so I can get a good look at you.” She said that he asked her whether she planned to marry and have children and said that he had made off-color jokes about his own marriage on several occasions. At one point, she said, he speculated about what she would look like in a bikini and asked her about the sexuality of “Five” co-hosts Dana Perino and Greg Gutfeld.

The complaint also said that Fox host Bill O’Reilly had made unwelcome advances toward her.

“Ailes did not act alone,” the lawsuit said. “He may have been the primary culprit, but his actions were condoned by his most senior lieutenants, who engaged in a concerted effort to silence Tantaros by threats, humiliation and retaliation.”

In particular, Tantaros said that Bill Shine — who was named as Ailes’s replacement earlier this month — warned her to drop her complaints about Ailes at one point. Shine, who was Fox’s top news executive and a key aide to Ailes, told her to “let this one go” or she would face a campaign of retaliation from Irena Briganti, the network’s head of media relations, according to the suit.

A Fox spokeswoman declined to address Tantaros’s claims, saying the network does not comment on pending litigation. Through his attorneys, Ailes has denied Carlson’s claims.

“Fox News masquerades as a defender of traditional family values, but behind the scenes, it operates like a sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult, steeped in intimidation, indecency and misogyny,” her lawsuit says.

Fox and Tantaros have been at odds since last year, when the network said she breached her employment contract by writing a book without Fox’s approval. She has not appeared on Fox for months as a result of the dispute. Fox’s attorney has previously claimed in an arbitration hearing that her claims of sexual harassment were an attempt to gain leverage in her dispute over the book.

Since Carlson’s suit was filed July 6, more than 20 women have told her attorneys that they were harassed by Ailes during his long career in television, dating as far back as the mid-1960s.

I have to admit that my sympathy is limited. What did these people expect? The price of carrying their water is that you become them, you breathe them, shit them and fuck them. You are them for as long as you get something in return for the devastation you enable. Perhaps forever. I'm not sure how you rinse working for Murdoch out of your soul. At a deep level, suing them seems to me an admission that Murdoch et al were right all along.

On the other hand anything which interferes with the Australian fucker of civilisations is to be welcomed.
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"

Fox News Will Pay Gretchen Carlson $20 Million To Settle Sexual Harassment Suit

September 6, 20169:42 AM ET
BILL CHAPPELL

In July, Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit accusing then-Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment. The network is settling the suit for a large sum of money and will offer an apology, a source tells NPR.
Noam Galai/Getty Images for GIFF
Two months after former Fox & Friends co-host Gretchen Carlson accused Fox News' then-chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment, the network has agreed to pay Carlson $20 million and make a "highly unusual public apology," NPR's David Folkenflik reports.

News of the settlement was first reported Tuesday morning by Vanity Fair; a source with knowledge of the settlement then confirmed the deal to David, and the company later issued a statement about it.

"We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve," 21st Century Fox says in part of that statement.

And in another development at Fox News, longtime anchor Greta Van Susteren is leaving the network, in a move that takes immediate effect: She will not host tonight's edition of her 7 p.m. show.

As for Carlson, she tweeted this morning, "I'm ready to move on to the next chapter in my life."

"The accusations are not subtle," David reported in July, describing Carlson's case.

Here's a brief summary from that report:

"In a lawsuit filed in a New Jersey civil court on Wednesday, lawyers for Carlson allege Ailes repeatedly dismissed her concerns that her colleagues on Fox & Friends had created a pervasively sexist atmosphere, telling her to learn to 'get along with the boys.'
"When Carlson met with Ailes to complain, she alleges Ailes replied, 'I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago.' The suit says Ailes explained, 'Sometimes problems are easier to solve that way.' In other conversations, Carlson contends, Ailes underscored what he could do for her career if she would look upon his invitations favorably. And she says he frequently ogled her, commenting on her figure and telling her to turn around so he could see her rear."
Carlson, whose contract with Fox News expired in June, says her refusal of sexual advances led to recrimination that included a pay cut, a shift to a lower-profile afternoon show, and the lack of chances to conduct important interviews.

Ailes initially said Carlson's "allegations are false" and that she had sued in retaliation for her contract not being renewed. But two weeks after the suit was filed, Ailes resigned from his post as chairman and CEO of Fox News.

In the wake of Carlson's suit, other women who worked at Fox came forward with similar allegations — including anchor Megyn Kelly, as New York magazine reported, and Andrea Tantaros, the host of The Five, among others, as David reported in August.

Problems at Fox News extended beyond Ailes, author Gabriel Sherman told NPR's Terry Gross in late July. Here's some of what Sherman, who wrote a book about Ailes and the rise of Fox News, had to say:

"It's not about Roger Ailes. It's about a culture — a television news network that played an undeniable role in reshaping American politics over the last 20 years. And it was a culture where this type of behavior was encouraged and protected. The allegations are that women routinely had to sleep with or be propositioned by their manager - in many cases, Roger Ailes, but I've reported on another manager who did this - in exchange for promotions.
"And so this is a culture where women felt pressured to participate in sexual activity with their superiors if they wanted to advance inside the company. And it was so — it was shocking to me — it was not that it occurred, but that it was so explicit, that it was - there was no subtext. There was no subtlety to it. It was just there. It was just almost blatantly stated. If you want this, you have to have sex with me or allow me to make sexually unwanted comments about you. And it was so blatant that it's almost now unbelievable. But it - we're learning more and more every day. This is what women who worked there had to endure for the last 20 years."
Today, both 21st Century Fox and Carlson issued statements about the settlement.

Here's 21st Century Fox:

"21st Century Fox is pleased to announce that it has settled Gretchen Carlson's lawsuit. During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism. She developed a loyal audience and was a daily source of information for many Americans. We are proud that she was part of the Fox News team. We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve."
And here's Carlson:

"I am gratified that 21st Century Fox took decisive action after I filed my Complaint. I'm ready to move on to the next chapter of my life in which I will redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace. I want to thank all the brave women who came forward to tell their own stories and the many people across the country who embraced and supported me in their #StandWithGretchen. All women deserve a dignified and respectful workplace in which talent, hard work and loyalty are recognized, revered and rewarded."

Media watchdog group Media Matters has called for an investigation into rightwing news network Fox News after allegations that the Rupert Murdoch cable TV channel hired a private investigator to obtain the phone records of its reporter, Joe Strupp.

According to a report on Friday in New York Magazine, Fox News general counsel Dianne Brandi ordered an investigation into Strupp, who was quoting anonymous sources about the internal workings of the network.

Unnamed executives quoted in New York writer Gabriel Sherman’s article say the practice of taking phone records was common: “This was the culture. Getting phone records doesn’t make anybody blink.”

Media Matters president Bradley Beychok said the organization is “considering all legal options”.

“From what we witnessed with Rupert Murdoch and News Corp’s prior phone hacking scandal, it’s critical for an immediate investigation of Roger Ailes and any other current or former Fox News employees who may have been involved in this illegal practice,” Beychok wrote. “Roger Ailes and Fox News broke the law by hacking into the phone records of Media Matters employees. Anyone involved in the illegal hacking should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and we are considering all legal options.”

A spokesperson for Brandi denied the allegations to Sherman. Fox News referred the Guardian back to Brandi’s denial.

During the period when the rightwing network was acquiring phone records of journalists, the Guardian was reporting on the phone hacking scandal at Murdoch’s flagship UK newspaper, the News of the World, a scandal that eventually led to the closure of the newspaper, nine convictions on various charges and the resignation of senior management.

In 2014, Andy Coulson, formerly the deputy editor of News of the World, was handed an 18-month prison sentence on charges related to the hacking scandal, of which he served less than five months. Rebekah Brooks, editor of the paper at the time of the scandal, was cleared of all charges and hired on as CEO of Murdoch’s News UK in September 2015.

Telephone records are considered protected information under US law and obtaining them without permission is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Robert A Mintz, a partner at McCarter and English who specializes in white-collar crime, told the Guardian he did not know of circumstances under which an investigator could look at Strupp’s phone records without a subpoena.

“If I just wanted to find out who you call, I don’t think there’s any legal way that I could go and get that,” Mintz said. The practice might be used to weed out leakers and then kept secret, he added, but it wouldn’t be within the law.

Though Ailes was ousted by the Murdochs – the executive’s relationship with Lachlan and James Murdoch is particularly tense – his lieutenants Bill Shine and Jack Abernethy have been promoted to run the network in his stead.

When Ailes was dismissed in August amid accusations of decades-long harassment of multiple female employees, the TV executive had lost favor with the Murdoch family, Sherman writes, over his support for Republican nominee Donald Trump.

According to Sherman, Ailes believed James Murdoch was trying to get rid of him in order to help elect Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. James Murdoch’s wife, Kathryn, is a former employee of the Clinton Foundation.

In August 2015, Murdoch called Ailes about Fox News’s consistent and uncritical support of Trump and told him “This has gone on long enough,” according to the report. Ailes told Murdoch he would allow his anchors to question Trump more vigorously than usual, but he told another colleague he already knew the score: “Donald Trump is going to be the Republican nominee,” Ailes reportedly said.
