Study finds early warning signals of abrupt climate change

Dec 08, 2014

A new study by researchers at the University of Exeter has found early warning signals of a reorganisation of the Atlantic oceans' circulation which could have a profound impact on the global climate system.

The research, published today in the journal Nature Communications, used a simulation from a highly complex model to analyse the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), an important component of the Earth's climate system.

It showed that early warning signals are present up to 250 years before it collapses, suggesting that scientists could monitor the real world overturning circulation for the same signals.

The AMOC is like a conveyor belt in the ocean, driven by the salinity and temperature of the water. The system transports heat energy from the tropics and Southern Hemisphere to the North Atlantic, where it is transferred to the atmosphere.

Experiments suggest that if the AMOC is 'switched off' by extra freshwater entering the North Atlantic, surface air temperature in the North Atlantic region would cool by around 1-3°C, with enhanced cooling of up to 8°C in the worst affected regions.

The collapse would also encourage drought in the Sahel - the area just south of the Sahara desert - and dynamic changes in sea level of up to 80cm along the coasts of Europe and North America.

"We found that natural fluctuations in the circulation were getting longer-lived as the collapse was approached, a phenomenon known as critical slowing down," said lead author Chris Boulton.

"We don't know how close we are to a collapse of the circulation, but a real world early warning could help us prevent it, or at least prepare for the consequences" adds co-author Professor Tim Lenton.

The study is the most realistic simulation of the climate system in which this type of early warning signal has been tested.

"The best early warning signals in the model world are in places where major efforts are going into monitoring the circulation in the real world - so these efforts could have unexpected added value' adds Professor Lenton.

Arctic ground squirrels unlock permafrost carbon BBC News 17 Dec 2014

Arctic ground squirrels could play a greater role in climate change than was previously thought.

Scientists have found that the animals are hastening the release of greenhouse gases from the permafrost - a vast, frozen store of carbon.

Global warming will cut wheat yields, research shows

Production of wheat – one of the world’s most important staple crops – is set to fall by 6% for every 1C rise in temperature, say scientists

Global wheat yields are likely to fall significantly as climate change takes hold, new research has shown .

The researchers found that wheat production would fall by 6% for every 1C increase in temperatures. The world is now nearly certain to warm by up to 2C compared with pre-industrial levels, with political efforts concentrated on holding the potential temperature rise to no higher than that limit. But some analyses suggest that if greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow at current rates then warming of as much as 5C could be in store.

In forecasting the effect on wheat production – one of the world’s most important staple crops – the researchers tested 30 computer models against field experiments to establish the most likely scenario.

A fall of 6% in yield may not sound dramatic, but as the world’s population grows the pressure on staple crops will increase.

Food price riots have been seen in several developing countries following sudden rises of less than 10% in food prices in recent years, demonstrating the vulnerability of the poor to grain prices. The global population is currently over 7bn and is forecast to rise to at least 9bn, and potentially up to 12bn, by 2050, which will put more pressure on agricultural land and water sources.

The research also counters the optimistic projections of some climate change sceptics, who argue that more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will increase plant growth, as they take up carbon from the air for photosynthesis. But that hypothesis has been widely questioned, as the boost to growing is likely to be outweighed by other effects, such as higher temperatures affecting germination and water availability.

The scientists behind Monday’s report, published as a letter in the peer-review journal Nature Climate Change, said: “Understanding how different climate factors interact and impact food production is essential when reaching decisions on how to adapt to the effects of climate change. Temperature changes alone are reported to have potentially large negative impacts on crop production, and hotspots — locations where plants suffer from high temperature stress — have been identified across the globe.”

Their research could be used to help identify adaptation strategies, potentially including genetic modification or improved plant breeding. “There are several adaptation options to counter the adverse effects of climate change on global wheat production — and for some regions this will be critical,” they said. “Ensemble crop modelling could be an important exploratory tool in breeding for identified genetic targets to extend grain filling, delay maturity [both of which increase the size of the crop] and improve heat tolerance in wheat cultivars and other cereals.”

The lead scientist was from the University of Florida, while a large number of other US universities, and institutions in Germany, France, Mexico, Australia and China were also involved.

Wheat Production Sets New Records Thanks To Global Warming

12/26/2014

Global wheat production set new records in 2013 and 2014, contradicting alarmists’ claims that global warming is reducing wheat harvests.

Image

Not only are global wheat yields not declining, they are rising at a spectacular pace. According to objective U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data, global wheat yields have risen by 33 percent since 1994. Moreover, there has been a 4 percent increase in areas harvested for wheat, indicating increased atmospheric carbon dioxide, improved soil moisture, and global warming are making more lands suitable for wheat harvests. Cumulatively, the 33 percent increase in wheat yield per acre and the 4 percent increase in land harvested for wheat add up to a near 40 percent increase in the global wheat harvest since 1994.

The spectacular gains in wheat yields show no signs of slowing down as the Earth continues its modest warming. The year 2014 saw the highest global wheat yield in history, exceeding the 2013 yield that had also set a new record.

Forbes will print any "pro-status quo" content for the right price, letting external PR hacks guide the creation process on top of it. I have personally witnessed this. I suspect this much is the same for many other "pro-business" publications.

Most all media have some niche demographic which they are catering to, the main two being the right and left of politics....so all you say about pro-business publications and their PR hacks is also true of leftist publications...except with a pro-green rhetoric matching the leftist "pro-status quo" wrt environment/climate agenda...take the the Guardian for example. However on the topic of future climate change wrt plant life, disregarding the rhetoric and speculations, it is logical that more CO2 will produce higher yield since CO2 is 'plant fertilizer', a fact that is shown to be already making an observable impact according to a peer reviewed CSIRO paper I have posted before on this thread...Increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) have helped boost green foliage across the world’s arid regions over the past 30 years through a process called CO2 fertilisation, according to CSIRO research.

Umm, Ben, aside the point Luther's mentioned, what is is not what will be. Only in future shall we learn the accuracy of the climate models mentioned in he article Robert posted.

The gains in production are due to many things though an excess of carbon dioxide in our upper atmosphere is not one that contributed negligibly. Improved fertilizers and genetically modified crops are the most substantial of reasons for the growth in production.

Take a look at Australia's wheat harvest over the past five years and tell me if it's up.

Australian wheat production for 2014-15 is expected to fall to 24 million tonnes due to lower than expected rainfall and declining yields. Wheat exports are also forecast to fall to around 18 million tonnes. Barley production is forecast to decline by around one fifth to 7.5 million tonnes, as some growers shift to wheat and canola crops and yields decline due to below average rainfall in the growing season. Production of grain sorghum in 2014-15 is forecast to increase by over 70 per cent to 1...

Im not quite so sure that claims about GMOs increasing crop yields. There are any amount of contradictory experiences to this, which should be of no surprise to anyone familiar with the propaganda regime behind this particularly horror story. Nice podcast here about GMO''s, which basically explains the ruin, extortion, and poisoning of the earth by the Corporate GMO collective of ex Nazis ( Empire)

Topics include how agrochemicals are the old war industry reinvented, the patenting of seeds via genetic engineering and fraudulent intellectual property rights to life because inserting a gene into a plant doesn’t create the plant itself, using GM to artificially create patented GMO bananas which already exist, thus stealing from nature or other culture’s selective breeding, how they wish to create a system of total control of life on Earth, farmers being penalised for collecting seeds, pest epidemics caused by GMOs which were supposed to be pest resistant, leading to more pesticides being used instead, Indian Farmer suicides escalating since Monsanto, and much more.

There is indeed much much more. The interview on the page is with Vanda Shiva - Someone who clearly knows from her experiences what she''s tallking about having witnessed the biotech giants in action in the cotton trade in India. Its the Empire in action. Rust never sleeps.

Im eagerly awaiting the headline that GMOs are not working because of Global warming, since its highly likely that both the GMO advocates and the AGW movement are joined at the hip, beyond the everyday gaze of most people who fall into one of these camps..
