US Baptists Arrested For Haiti Child Trafficking

PORT-AU-PRINCE – Amid growing fears of child trafficking, Haitian police have arrested ten American Baptists for smuggling dozens children from the earthquake-stricken country.
"This is an abduction, not an adoption," Haitian Social Affairs Minister Yves Christallin said, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Sunday, January 31.

Police arrested ten Americans from a Christian ministry group called a "Haitian Orphan Rescue Mission" for trying to smuggle 31 Haitian children across the borders into the Dominican Republic.

Christallin said two pastors – one in Haiti and one in Atlanta - were also involved in the scheme. The children were aged two months to 12 years and had come from different places.

The Church group denies the trafficking charges, saying the children were being rescued from orphanages that had been damaged in the quake.

It says that the intention was to get the children to a temporary shelter.

“Apart from any considerations regarding the intentions of the suspects, we are dealing with an infraction of Haitian law,” said Christallin.

"What is important for us in Haiti is that a child needs to have an authorization from this ministry to leave the country."

The smuggled children were recovered by the police and transferred to a facility north of the Haitian capital.

"Now it's up to the Justice Department do to their job," police chief Mario Andresol said.

Haiti was struck by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on January 12, killing tens of thousands and left more than one million homeless.

Trafficking

The trafficking incident comes amid growing fears that the chaos triggered by the quake leave Haitian children vulnerable to fall prey to human traffickers.

"The Haitian government was quite right to halt these people at the border if they felt they didn't have the right paperwork," Amanda Weisbaum, from Save the Children organization told the Doha-based Al-Jazeera channel.

"Experience has shown it is better to keep the children in the place, and with the people they know.”

Haitian officials have warned that child traffickers will take advantage of the chaos caused by the quake to slip out with children in illegal adoption schemes.

To counter this, the government has imposed new controls, requiring personal authorization from Prime Minister Max Bellerive to allow the departure of any child out of the country.

"We trying to make sure that all these children still have parents or families within the area and that hasn't been ascertained yet.”

The UN said last week that a number have gone missing from hospitals in Haiti.

..But the group's leader, Laura Silsby, says they were trying to take abandoned children to an orphanage across the border in the Dominican Republic.

"The entire team deeply fell in love with these children," she said.

"They are very, very precious kids that have lost their homes and their families and are so, so deeply in need of God's love and his compassion and just a very nurturing setting."

But a care centre chief says most of the children "have family" that survived the January 12 earthquake.

Patricia Vargas, regional director of the SOS Children's Village, where the children are being cared for, says officials at the Haitian Institute of Social Welfare told her "most of the kids have family".

Ms Vargas says older children of the group say some of the youngsters' "parents are alive, and some of them gave us an address and phone numbers". ..

Am stunned theres not a thread here on this already, that i could find anyway.
