Well, the shape of the "planchette", as the cursor-like item is called, is rather standard. But, I must admit that when its colored pink it looks more heart-like. The triangular shape hearkens back to a pre-letterboard usage, wherein a writing implement such as a pencil was placed at the apex and two casters supported the rest of the device. The "spirits" then provided written messages. And I suppose that the addition of a veiwport to the device and the attendant letterboard made such messages a bit easier to create and decipher, at least for the layperson.
