Wikileaks' estranged co-founder becomes a critic (Q&A)
by Declan McCullagh

NEW YORK--John Young was one of Wikileaks' early founders. Now he's one of the organization's more prominent critics.

Young, a 74-year-old architect who lives in Manhattan, publishes a document-leaking Web site called Cryptome.org that predates Wikileaks by over a decade. He's drawn fire from Microsoft after posting leaked internal documents about police requests, irked the U.K. government for disclosing the names of possible spies, and annoyed Homeland Security by disclosing a review of Democratic National Convention security measures.

Cryptome's history of publicizing leaks--while not yielding to pressure to remove them--is what led Young to be invited to join Wikileaks before its launch over three years ago. He also agreed to be the public face of the organization by listing his name on the domain name registration.

Operating a Web site to post leaked documents isn't very expensive (Young estimates he spends a little over $100 a month for Cryptome's server space). So when other Wikileaks founders started to talk about the need to raise $5 million and complained that an initial round of publicity had affected "our delicate negotiations with the Open Society Institute and other funding bodies," Young says, he resigned from the effort.

In the last few weeks, after the arrest of Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning cast a brighter spotlight on Wikileaks, Young has been trying to trace Wikileaks' money flows. On July 17, Wikileaks asked supporters for $200,000 to pay for Mannings' attorneys, even though co-founder Julian Assange said a few days earlier that the organization had already raised $1 million.

And from Young to the Wikileaks listserve, via Cryptome.org:

serve as US person for registration.

Wikileaks is a fraud:

Please do not mention that word directly in these discussions; refer instead to 'WL'.
This list is housed at riseup.net, an activist collective in Seattle with an established lawyer
and plenty of backbone.]

Fuck your cute hustle and disinformation campaign against legitimate
dissent. Same old shit, working for the enemy.

............................

I'd say Young has it right. Even if Assange isn't a sworn agent and was just trying to "fleece" the CIA and other intel units out of sheer naked greed, he's even dumber than he looks if he thought he could trust his handlers. But I expect he's not that dumb and we'll soon see a quiet release or disappearance or maybe "suicide" or "murder by deranged illegal alien" or Ken Lay attack and our brave little albino will disappear into an Afghan cave to await his next cue.

Looks like those Swedish hookers aren't the only ones albino boy stiffed:

On July 17, Wikileaks asked supporters for $200,000 to pay for Mannings' attorneys, even though co-founder Julian Assange said a few days earlier that the organization had already raised $1 million.

From today's WaPo:

WikiLeaks hasn't met pledge for soldier's legal aid, group says

WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy Web site, has yet to make good on a July pledge to contribute financial aid to the legal defense fund of a U.S. Army private suspected of leaking classified documents to the site, the fund's director said Tuesday.

"It's a surprise to us that it hasn't happened yet," said Jeff Paterson, project director of Courage to Resist, an Oakland, Calif., group seeking to raise $100,000 toward legal fees for Pfc. Bradley E. Manning, who was charged five months ago in connection with the leaking of classified material.

Courage to Resist, a war resisters' group, so far has donated $50,000 to pay the fees of Manning's private attorney, David E. Coombs. But as of Tuesday, Paterson said, WikiLeaks had not transferred any money to him.

Late Tuesday, WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson said in an e-mail that a misunderstanding about the status of the payment had been "rectified" and the "payment is being processed now."

Paterson said the development was "awesome." He said: "Super. I hope the check is in the mail."

WikiLeaks has engaged in an aggressive fundraising campaign and has raised about $1 million through Wau Holland, according to media reports.

.....................................

I wouldn't count on any checks in the mail Mr Paterson. Might want to look into that Swiss bank account Asshat was trying to open a few days ago though..

Raising millions for a charity and then stiffing it doesn't make the Assange hole smell well.

Nah. They had six months since the CNET story to fork over a measly couple of grand and they couldn't be bothered. Asshat obviously isn't poor (hookers anyone?) and obviously doesn't give a shit about Manning. He can't even give the poor slob credit for his big "scoop," that stupid UN memo.

Twelve Theses on WikiLeaks
http://www.realitysandwich.com/twelve_theses_wikileaks
I have introduced each thesis with the opening sentences. If the reader so chooses, he/she can link the article.

Thesis 0
"What do I think of WikiLeaks? I think it would be a good idea!" (after Mahatma Gandhi's famous quip on "Western Civilization")

Thesis 1
Disclosures and leaks have been a feature of all eras, however never before has a non-state or non-corporate affiliated group done anything on the scale of what WikiLeaks has managed to do, first with the "collateral murder" video, then the "Afghan War Logs", and now "Cablegate".

Thesis 2
For better or for worse, WikiLeaks has skyrocketed itself into the realm of high-level international politics.

Thesis 3
In the ongoing saga called "The Decline of the US Empire", WikiLeaks enters the stage as the slayer of a soft target.

Thesis 4
One of the main difficulties with explaining WikiLeaks arises from the fact that it is unclear (also to the WikiLeaks people themselves) whether it sees itself and operates as a content provider or as a simple conduit for leaked data (the impression is that it sees itself as either/or, depending on context and circumstances).

Thesis 5
The steady decline of investigative journalism caused by diminishing funding is an undeniable fact.

Thesis 6
WikiLeaks is a typical SPO (Single Person Organization, or "UPO": Unique Personality Organization). This means that the initiative taking, decision-making and execution is largely concentrated in the hands of a single individual.

Thesis 7
WikiLeaks raises the question as to what hackers have in common with secret services, since an elective affinity between the two is unmistakable. The love-hate relationship goes back to the very beginning of computing.

Thesis 8
Lack of commonality with congenial, "another world is possible" movements drives WikiLeaks to seek public attention by way of increasingly spectacular and risky disclosures, thereby gathering a constituency of often wildly enthusiastic, but generally passive supporters.

Thesis 9
WikiLeaks displays a stunning lack of transparency in its internal organization. Its excuse that "WikiLeaks needs to be completely opaque in order to force others to be totally transparent" amounts, in our opinion, to little more than Mad magazine's famous Spy vs. Spy cartoons.

Thesis 10
Maybe WikiLeaks will organize itself around its own version of the Internet Engineering Task Force's slogan "rough consensus and running code"? Projects like Wikipedia and Indymedia have both resolved this issue in their own ways, but not without crises, conflicts and splits.

Thesis 11
The widely shared critique of the self-inflicted celebrity cult of Julian Assange invites the formulation of alternatives. Wouldn't it be better to run WikiLeaks as an anonymous collective or "organized network"?

Thesis 12
We do not think that taking a stand for or against WikiLeaks is what matters most. WikiLeaks is here to stay, until it either scuttles itself or is destroyed by opposing forces. Our point is rather to (try to) assess and ascertain what WikiLeaks can, could -- and maybe even should -- do, and to help formulate how "we" could relate to and interact with WikiLeaks.

^ Bullshit headline. Asshat had six months to toss a few bucks Manning's way and straight up stiffed him. From your article:

"Courage to Resist," a group raising funds for Manning, claims Assange pledged to contribute money in July but has yet to pony up, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

"It's a surprise to us that it hasn't happened yet," the group's project director Jeff Paterson told the Post.

"Courage" is looking to raise $100,000 to cover Manning's legal fees.

The Oakland, Calif.-based group has already donated $50,000 to cover Manning's attorney's costs, and is still waiting for WikiLeaks to pay up as promised.

It's no surprise to me but I guess that's another conversation.

Luper,
You should really listen to Tarpley's most recent interview with Jonesie. I posted it to the Wikileaks Question Thread (toward the end) here's the audio only of it (you can also find it on YouTube Alex Jones channel):

Edit: Barracuda says this is playing automatically (it's not doing that on my computer) so I took out the embed, here's the link: http://tarpley.net/2010/12/05/assange-t ... a-enemies/

Saw this on Cryptome, don't know who "A" is, and while still reserving judgement on Wikileaks' aims and origins etc., I found this an interesting addition to the mix:

5 December 2010

Wikileaks DADT

A sends:

The unexplained delay by the Swedish Prosecution Authority in advancing the case against Julian Assange may be due to the time needed to complete blood tests on the alleged victims for sexually transmitted disease, especially for HIV, tests for which require 6 to 12 weeks, rather than for pregnancy test results obtainable much quicker.

If the sexual activity was in part anal in which condom breakage is common, condom failure would have terrified the other parties suddenly confronted with the threat of bi-sexual misogyny characterized by female seduction as prelude to conflicted male homophilic aggression -- residue of witnessed father-and-mother coupling parental incest desire.

If HIV is suspected, or found, there is a requirement to track other potential victims by interviews and other forms of tracing. This begins with testing of the transmitter, if available and willing, followed by interviews on the sexual history of the transmitter and suspected victims, then notification and testing of suspects. The time required for this can be lengthy or short depending on the history and candor of the transmitter, many of whom lie to evade culpability.

These investigations are customarily kept confidential to induce candid revelations. In some instances courts may order disclosure if a transmitter balks so that affected parties can receive tests and medical care.

Beyond this, Assange is suspected of being bi-sexually promiscuous and not attentive to partners after brief or extended relationships, often concurrently multiple as in the Swedish instance, in which he insists on being a dominant controller and insensitive to the after-needs of his companions.

More generally, defiance toward him leads to immediate breakoff of relationships, with dissidents blamed and denigrated.

He has repeatedly demonstrated intolerance toward those he recruits for his various ventures, Wikileaks the latest. He recruits with flattery of targets and promises of important stature in the actions, maintains dominance over those less capable than he with vulgar bragging about his recruitment successes, and dismisses anyone who challenges his supremacy. Refusing or walking out of interviews and halting discussions is typical. He much prefers to orate without interruption, inveterately solipsistic.

He is hyper-sensitive to criticism and loses his temper rather than answer disagreements. He believes he is smarter than his doubters and has no patience with those who do not succumb to flattery, oration and bullying.

In turn, he craves praise and flattery, and becomes depressed and suicidal if he does not get those from admirers he cultivates for that purpose -- susceptible adorants and especially those more notable than he. "Kicks down, kisses up."

He has left a trail of persons infected by what he promises, were used by him so long as they were believers, then abandoned when not. His wife and children among them; only his mother remains as loyal as a dominating wife -- perhaps the source of his misogynism and homophilic longing for a dominant father (a characterisic among many shared with Obama).

He suffers an emotional and intellectual messianism for which he believes there is no antidote. He does not expect to be punished for infecting with promises of glory and love as done with Bradley Manning and others yet untracked. If he is also spreading a fatal disease such as HIV he is intentionally sacrificing victims as his last god-like action so common in narcissists.

His quick cooperation with Swedish blood tests could put this frightening scenario to rest, or provide aid for immediate treatment of those who may have been victimized. This can be done quietly without public disclosure although Wikileaks has published confidential sexual investigations with names of innocents.
