Billionaire climate change deniers and their hirelings

Postby wintler2 » Sat Jul 16, 2011 11:04 pm

To kick off the thread, a great radio doco on Viscount Monkton and his Australian backers, mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, Hugh Morgan etc.
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/backgroundbriefing/stories/2011/3268730.htm

The Scottish peer Lord Monckton has been raising hell against the carbon tax in barnstorming rallies and public meetings around the country. But just who is Lord Monckton and who are the forces behind him? Chief amongst them a mysterious group called the Galileo Movement and mining magnate and now media player Gina Rinehart. Reporter Wendy Carlisle

I'll post the transcript when its available.

Highlights for me: Monkton claiming he doesn't know who paid for his last two speaking tours in Aus (it was Rinehart), hysterical rambles from 2GB shockjock Alan Jones (Oz's own Rush Limbaugh), the denoument of prominent climate denier 'Professor' Tim Ball, & coverage of (climate 'advisor') Fred Singers smoking-cancer-denial rap sheet.

It is beyond dispute that climate change deniers are funded by very rich people who stand to lose some of their planetfucking profits.

Yo Joe, you know Gina is on the board of channel 10 now?
http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/11/23/rin ... laying-at/

And surprise surprise...

ANDREW Bolt has been given his own Sunday morning soapbox on Channel Ten. For those not in the know, Andrew Bolt is the #1 climate change denier in Australian newspapers, having his own daily full page 'column' in News Corps Melbourne Herald Sun (Oz's biggest daily newspaper).

Yeah, the fuckwit. Tho up here its not on till the arvo and I haven't bothered watching it. Reinhart owns a share in fairfax too doesn't she? Remember Bolt and the leak and Andrew Wilke back when he worked for some spook agency?

Bolt is slime. I often put the boot into him where I can.

Have you seen this:

http://theclotfactor.blogspot.com/

Or the dumbfuck defense he mounted of newslimited last week? Not to mention the fact that he is a racist race baiting racist. And a fuckwit.

He's pretty bad and getting worse, the dumbfuck corporate apologist wannabe fascist pos.

On the plus side tho his tv show is getting its arse kicked by stuff like bananas in Pyjamas and the mighty morphin turtle ponies or something. The trouble with Bolt is he is loud and one of the 5%.

You can hang shit on him here if you want, tho they are pretty hard on the moderation cos Bolt sets the lawyers on the pure Poison boys at the drop of a hat:

http://blogs.crikey.com.au/purepoison/2 ... d-july-12/

I've had a few run ins with the Southbank Jester online myself, including writing to the press council on one occasion. I'm gonna do it again at some point. Bolt is a smart prick tho, and had the nerve to ask the press council to ask me if he could use the letter in his column and answer the criticisms.

Given the fuck censors me 80% of the time I comment at his site, especially since I called him on blaming the greens for the Black Saturday fires when the Kilmore East fire and likely the Murrindindi mill fire were started by failure of electricity infrastructure after their privatisation and talk of cutting maintenance, not cos of green councils banning burning off (in a drought with the worst conditions for decades,) well he's got a nerve asking me to provide the content he gets paid for.

Onward and on to the ends of reason where malice is the means of the earth.
Onward and on, this strange-wrought bird, onwards and over the black coffee earth,
Onward and on, this laughing train to the ends of its low, low mirth...

Bolt seems smart, but its pretty easy for him to look good when News Corp censors criticism via comments or letters. I hadn't seen the clotfactor (funny!) but do know the Crikey column, thank god for small mercies, a comment there today:
Bolt is claiming that this attempt to destroy CSIRO’s GM wheat shows that the Greens “don’t respect the science”
LOL!
This coming from a man who has recently described the CSIRO as “dishonest propagandists”
A man who believes fallout and potential radiation poisoning is a “beat up”
A man who has accused the vast majority of climate scientists of corruption, of having been “blinded by bias or simply fiddled their results and suppressed dissent.” ..

Hypocrisy is an essential skill if you're going to toady to power, and Bolt is the gold standard of planetfucking apologetics.

And the Press Council, what a joke that is. Good on you trying, but they have zero power and even less inclination to make waves. 'Self-regulation' a wonderful thing, they should extend it to crimes against property.

Christopher Monckton told to stop claiming he is a member of the Lords

UK Independence party's deputy leader replies to clerk of the parliaments that the House of Lords Act 1999 is 'defective

The House of Lords has stepped up its efforts to make Lord Monckton – climate sceptic and deputy leader of the UK Independence party – desist in his repeated claims that he is a member of the upper house.

The push comes as Buckingham Palace has also been drawn into the affair, over his use of a logo similar to parliament's famous portcullis emblem.

Last month Michael Pownall, clerk of the parliaments, wrote to Lord Monckton, a hereditary peer, stressing that he should not refer to himself as a member of the House of Lords, nor should he use any emblem representing the portcullis.

In a letter seen by the Guardian, Monckton replied this week to Pownall stating that he considered the House of Lords Act 1999, which "purported" to exclude all but 92 of the 650 hereditary peers from the Lords, to be "defective".

Monckton argued that the act did not remove membership because peerages are granted by "letters patent" which are a personal gift of the monarch.

The House of Lords said today it strongly rejects Monckton's interpretation. A spokeswoman said: "Lord Monckton is not and never has been a member of the House of Lords. The clerk of the parliaments has written to Lord Monckton, confirming that he has no association with the House and advising him to stop branding himself as such."

Monckton also argues that his use of the portcullis emblem, which has appeared on his letterheads and lecture presentations, does not breach any rules. The spokeswoman added: "The emblem is property of the Queen, and parliament has a royal licence granted for its use. … he has been referred to the Lord Chamberlain over the issue, and it will fall to him to follow up on any misuse of the emblem."

This is interesting on two fronts:

1. Being a Lord is the only claim to any sort of status this buffoon has. And its a lie.

2. The buffoon insists he is right and all the experts are wrong. When he is doing it down the power heirarchy (re climate change, screw the poor) he gets the backing of billionaires .. but when his delusions even slightly challenge those more powerful than him he gets slapped down.

Monkton is too valuable to the climate change deniers to lose, he'll back down with some weasel words about a misunderstanding and be back in your nearest billionaires newspaper before the month is up.

Final proof right wingers are idiots and liars

Image

Polar bear cubs forced to swim long distances with their mothers as their icy Arctic habitat melts appear to have a higher mortality rate than cubs that didn't have to swim as far, a new study reports.

Polar bears hunt, feed and give birth on ice or on land, and are not naturally aquatic creatures. Previous reports have noted individual animals swimming hundreds of miles to reach ice platforms or land, but this is one of the first to show these swims pose a greater risk to polar bear young.

"Climate change is pulling the sea ice out from under polar bears' feet, forcing some to swim longer distances to find food and habitat," said Geoff York of World Wildlife Fund, a co-author of the study.

Climate sceptic Willie Soon received $1m from oil companies, papers show

Documents obtained by Greenpeace show prominent opponent of climate change was funded by ExxonMobil, among others

One of the world's most prominent scientific figures to be sceptical about climate change has admitted to being paid more than $1m in the past decade by major US oil and coal companies.

Dr Willie Soon, an astrophysicist at the Solar, Stellar and Planetary Sciences Division of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics, is known for his view that global warming and the melting of the arctic sea ice is caused by solar variation rather than human-caused CO2 emissions, and that polar bears are not primarily threatened by climate change.

But according to a Greenpeace US investigation, he has been heavily funded by coal and oil industry interests since 2001, receiving money from ExxonMobil, the American Petroleum Insitute and Koch Industries along with Southern, one of the world's largest coal-burning utility companies. Since 2002, it is alleged, every new grant he has received has been from either oil or coal interests.

In addition, freedom of information documents suggest that Soon corresponded in 2003 with other prominent climate sceptics to try to weaken a major assessment of global warming being conducted by the UN's leading climate science body, the Nobel prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Soon, who had previously disclosed corporate funding he received in the 1990s, was today reportely unapologetic, telling Reuters that he agreed that he had received money from all of the groups and companies named in the report but denied that any group would have influenced his studies.

"I have never been motivated by financial reward in any of my scientific research," he said. "I would have accepted money from Greenpeace if they had offered it to do my research." He did not respond to a request from the Guardian to comment.

Documents provided to Greenpeace by the Smithsonian under the US Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) show that the Charles G Koch Foundation, a leading provider of funds for climate sceptic groups, gave Soon two grants totalling $175,000 (then roughly £102,000) in 2005/6 and again in 2010. In addition the American Petroleum insitute (API), which represents the US petroleum and natural gas industries, gave him multiple grants between 2001 and 2007 totalling $274,000, oil company Exxon Mobil provided $335,000 between 2005 and 2010, and Soon received other grants from coal and oil industry sources including the Mobil Foundation, the Texaco Foundation and the Electric Power Research Institute.

As one of very few scientists to publish in peer-reviewed literature denying climate change, Soon is widely regarded as one of the leading sceptical voices. His scientific position and the vehemence of his views has made him a central figure in a heated political debate that has informed the US right wing and helped to undermine public trust in the science of global warming and UN negotiations.

"A campaign of climate change denial has been waged for over 20 years by big oil and big coal," said Kert Davies, a research director at Greenpeace US. "Scientists like Dr Soon, who take fossil fuel money and pretend to be independent scientists, are pawns."

Soon has strongly argued that the 20th century was not a uniquely extreme climatic period. His most famous work challenged the "hockey stick" graph of temperature records published by Michael Mann, which showed a relatively sharp rise in temperatures during the second half of the 20th century. A paper published with Sallie Baliunas in 2003 in the journal Climate Research which attacked the hockey stick on flimsy evidence led to a group of leading climate scientists including Mann deciding to boycott the journal. In a letter to the Guardian in February 2004, Soon wrote that the authors had been open about their sources of funding. "All sources of funding for our research were fully disclosed in our manuscript. Most of our funding came from federal agencies, including the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Nasa," he wrote.

He has also questioned the health risks of mercury emissions from coal and in 2007 co-wrote a paper that down-played the idea that polar bears are threatened by human-caused climate change

The investigation is likely to embarrass Exxon, the world's largest oil company, which for many years funded climate sceptics but in 2008 declared it would cut funds to lobby groups that "divert attention" from the need to find new sources of clean energy. According to the documents, Exxon provided $55,000 for Soon to study Arctic climate change in 2007 and 2008, and another $76,106 for research into solar variability between 2008 and 2010.

Exxon spokesman Alan Jeffers said this week the company did not fund Soon last year, and that it funds hundreds of organisations to do research on climate and the environment.

Southern gave Soon $120,000 starting in 2008 to study the Sun's relation to climate change, according to the FIA documents. Spokeswoman Stephanie Kirijan said the company has spent about $500m on funding environmental research and development ,and that it did not fund Soon last year.

In one 2003 email released to Greenpeace, that Soon sent, it is believed, to four other leading sceptics, he writes: "Clearly [the fourth assessment report] chapters may be too much for any one of us to tackle them all ... But as a team, we may give it our best shot to try to anticipate and counter some of the chapters ..." He adds: "I hope we can ... see what we can do to weaken the fourth assessment report."

In 2003 Soon said at a US senate hearing that he had "not knowingly been hired by, nor employed by, nor received grants from any organisation that had taken advocacy positions with respect to the Kyoto protocol or the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change."

I remember that comment too... I didn't write it but post there a bit.

Monkton was debating some guy at the Press Council this week. He is such a fuckhead... What a waste of time that was.

I give Bolt credit for smarts - his debate with Robert Manne re the Stolen Generations was a propaganda triumph for Bolt, despite not having a fact to stand on.
And i tuned in to ABC24 tonight for the Monkton-Dennis debate but it didn't screen, i think. I guess i'll have to dig it up and sit thru it. :(

Murdoch Henchman Responsible for Climate-Gate?
By Keith Olbermann

July 21, 2011 "Current TV" -- The Murdoch Phone-Hacking Scandal may have just metastasized. The so-called "Climate-Gate" controversy - in which e-mails about global warming were stolen from researchers at Britain's University of East Anglia in November, 2009 - now turns out to bear the stamp of Neil Wallis, one of the key figures in Murdoch's hacking of the phones, voicemails, and other electronic communications of thousands of people.

On November 20th, 2009, somebody broke into a computer server at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, and stole thousands of emails and computer files. The documents were leaked to Climate Change Deniers, and although exhaustive analysis later proved that the emails merely revealed scientists' anxiety that Climate Data and Research were being properly handled and studied, the Deniers have treated those emails as if they were a kind of Holy Grail of fraud. They claim the emails not only disproved all of climate change, but also that they proved that scientists had doctored data in order to exaggerate the urgency of an international conference on climate change coming up the next month in Copenhagen in Denmark.

As the corporations and lobbyists who sought to feed the myth that there is no man-made climate change disseminated, exploited and deliberately misinterpreted the stolen e-mails - and used Fox News and other Murdoch enterprises as their principle venues - the victims, the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, decided they'd better hire a public relations pro to help them fight back. They hired ... Neil Wallis.

The Murdoch editor who had supervised electronic hacking at "The News Of The World," but then went to work for Scotland Yard, but then spied on the Scotland Yard hacking investigation for Murdoch's men, but then tried to suppress media coverage of the Scotland Yard hacking investigation, now found himself in exactly the same kind of candy store over climate change denial. And he was the chief kid!

As it was phrased in a gushing review last year in "Music Week Magazine" of Neil Wallis and his PR firm "Outside Organization": "Wallis led on the University of East Anglia's 'Climategate' job, when Outside was drafted in to help the university's Climatic Research Unit defend itself against charges of scientific misconduct."

Climate change scientists and outside experts agree that, with Neil Wallis at the helm, the Climatic Research Unit couldn't have done a worse job defending itself. The myth that its emails "disprove" Global Warming persists today.
..
.

Only 170 of the victims have yet been notified. If any of the others among the "Hacked Twelve Thousand" turn out to be scientists at the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia, Rupert Murdoch may be in a lot bigger trouble than he is, even tonight.

While the headline is really just speculation, it is true that Wallis did a truly awful job of helping the University of East Anglia. But if any climate scientists are on that list of the phone-hacked, that will be a new front on which to pursue News Corp.

Monckton threatens to sue ABC, calls chairman a ‘shrimp’
Climate change denier Lord Christopher Monckton has threatened to sue the ABC and described its chairman Maurice Newman as a “shrimp-like wet little individual”.

Lord Monckton, who is towards the end of a near month-long tour of Australia, told a Melbourne audience he had met with Newman at a breakfast and requested he intervene in the broadcast of the Radio National documentary Background Briefing.

Experienced ABC journalist Wendy Carlisle interviewed Lord Monckton and several of his supporters for the documentary, which first aired on Sunday. The documentary also highlighted links between Lord Monckton and mining magnate and supporter Gina Rinehart, chairman of Hancock Prospecting.

During the program, Lord Monckton was recorded telling an audience: “So to the bogus scientists who have produced the bogus science that invented this bogus scare I say, we are coming after you. We are going to prosecute you, and we are going to lock you up.”

In the latest outburst on July 20 at a speech in Melbourne, Lord Monckton said: “I have written to the chairman of the ABC who is a shrimp-like wet little individual and I have said to him, right mate, I warned you about this woman [Wendy Carlisle] orally over breakfast.

“I then wrote to you saying she is going about my friends pestering them and then she produces and broadcasts this garbage because you did nothing about it. Now I want the right of reply to these lies by the ABC or I will sue. So watch out ABC.”

ABC corporate affairs director Michael Millett said in a statement to Crikey: “The ABC has received a number of complaints from Lord Monckton about its coverage of him and is working through them. We have no further comment.” Crikey requested a response from Newman but this request was turned down by Millett.

Shortly after Lord Monckton’s previous visit to Australia, Newman told senior ABC staff that some were guilty of “uncritical group think” in accepting that serious climate change was being caused by humans.

Lord Monckton caused controversy before arriving in Australia, when it was revealed he had displayed a quote from Australia’s former climate change policy adviser Professor Ross Garnaut beside a large swastika.
..

Is 'Miscount Bunkton' (lol) really the best the CC deniers can come up with? Sadly, with the billionaires backing, it might be enough to keep 'what problem?' as defacto policy. Hope y'all in US are enjoying your 'warm spell', get used to it.
