AUSTIN (KXAN) - Local authorities were briefed last week about a possible upcoming threat in downtown Austin.
The Austin Police Department said some of its patrol supervisors were updated last week on a "low credibility threat" for August 8 and 9.
“We vetted all the information with our regional and federal partners as we do with all threats," APD said in a statement. "APD will continue to monitor the situation and have in place an appropriate response plan if necessary.”
The alert comes as the White House says Al Qaeda may still be planning an August attack.
Officials say that while an apparent plot has been uncovered and it's based in Yemen, the target is still not known and so the danger continues.
Intelligence intercepts, the end of Ramadan and recent prison breaks in Iraq and Pakinstan are contributing to concerns.
"After almost twelve years of fighting the ideology of al Qaeda, that we have really not succeeded in breaking the back and indeed the ideology seems to be gaining root again," said Marc Ginsberg, former Ambassador to Morocco.
Nineteen embassies and consulates in Africa and the Middle East will remain closed through Saturday. The U.S. is also keeping the global travel alert in place for Americans.

Al Qaeda at war with US-backed Yemeni government
NBC News has learned al Qaeda’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri ordered his Yemeni leader to carry out an attack that would “change the balance of power in the Middle East.” NBC’s Richard Engel reports.
Onthe morning of 9 February 2004, The New York Times carried an exclusive and alarming story. The paper's Baghdad correspondent, Dexter Filkins, reported that US officials had obtained a 17-page letter, believed to have been written by the notorious terrorist Abu Musab al Zarqawi to the "inner circle" of al-Qa'ida's leadership, urging them to accept that the best way to beat US forces in Iraq was effectively to start a civil war.

They release what they want you to know, or try to get you to believe. After their crybaby pissfest over Snowden and Manning anybody really believe they would release info about specific targets? Info release are not random, these manipulators of the masses are a clever bunch with proven methods.
They could give a rats ass about us, it's called propaganda for a reason.
Turn off the TV and go for a walk in the woods, much better for you and the trees don't lie to you, or start wars. Sorry if that comes off as preachy, but when doesn't he media know jack about anything?

But I've probably been naive for much of my life.
