I think what you are suggesting is A.VERY.GOOD.IDEA.INDEED and curiously, this has been a REALLY nagging thought in my mind over the last few weeks.

I have seen a board with probably tens of thousands of research hours lost because no one did this and the Board owner botched a migration and had no backup.

I think what is needed is concerted attention from Jeff Wells and if he is not prepared to do that (and I see no evidence he is), then I agree 82_28, but I think five months is pushing it - I'm thinking more like five weeks.

Maybe we should look at designing a way forward instead of waking up one day and finding the plug has been pulled.

There are backups. IIRC, HMW account was not just banned but deleted (tho his posts were not) that is why he doesn't show in the list of top users.

An archive of the forum can be prepared and made portable.

I do not think we're in any danger of the plug being pulled by surprise.

On various boards I have been on, every now and again tensions have built up to an extent where a rift of some sort occurs.

This has become predictable enough to be a subject in itself, at which point I usually suggest this and receive lukewarm responses due to this subject being almost 'invisible' to even very intelligent folks.
A very brief analysis of this might be that these tensions build up to an unexpected degree (relative to meatspace) because we have not yet learned how to co-exist in cyberspace. The trouble is that we think and act like we have, but in reality mostly use the same old learned habits derived from meatspace.... This doesn't work, things don't get resolved.

Your description above sounds similar to what happens on other forums. I have heard it said that RI is different and special, but as far as I can see, this is a fairly thin veneer.
