Is this the esoteric part: "Folk singer with a cat... Is that part of your act? Every time you play a C major he pukes a hair ball?"

Or this? "George Washington Bridge? You throw yourself off the Brooklyn Bridge, traditionally. George Washington Bridge? Who does that?"

You raise up your head
And you ask, “Is this where it is?”
And somebody points to you and says
“It’s his”
And you say, “What’s mine?”
And somebody else says, “Where what is?”
And you say, “Oh my God
Am I here all alone?”

Wiki will do here...

derived from the Greek: meaning 'inner' or 'pertaining to the innermost'; also refers to the academic study of esoteric religious movements and philosophies.

Although esotericism refers to an exploration of the hidden meanings and symbolism in various philosophical, historical, and religious texts, the texts themselves are often central to mainstream religions.

Since the movie is called Inside Llewyn Davis the charge of esotericism seemingly resonates and doubly so. It begs and maybe answers the question: Precisely what is the esoteric inside of?

SPOILERS, I guess....

I took it basically the opposite way. LD seemingly finally gets his 'big break,' by performing at the hip coffeehouse (Gaslight?) with a NY Times reporter in attendance, and he has the misfortune of appearing on the same night as a pre-fame Bobby Z. Presumably Bob will outshine everyone else, and get the big write-up. On any other night, Davis could have been the stand-out.

No one has mentioned 'A Serious Man'—grim and depressing, yet pretty hilarious. Don't watch if you're feeling down, or having an existential crisis or something. :wink
