What, no "House of Cards" thread??

Postby Nordic » Sat May 10, 2014 3:52 am

Recently finished the 2nd season of "House of Cards" on Netflix. Thought I'd come here and check out the thread on it.

But ... I can't find a thread on it.

This is rather mind boggling. Do we really NOT have a thread here on "House of Cards"?

How far we've sunk .......

So unless I simply cannot find it, perhaps this could be the official "House of Cards" thread.

It's pretty RI, that show.

I think the show is having a pretty powerful effect on the way people view their government right now. I mean, people are completely disillusioned, perhaps more disillusioned than I've ever seen in my adult life, and this show seems to confirm to a lot of people as to WHY.

I find the show doesn't go nearly far enough. It's very basic, very rudimentary, and leaves out huge swaths of American government corruption/power. There are no spook agencies in the show, there are no wars going on, and so on.

But I think it's great. It's just the right amount to lay on people, following the "Keep it simple, stupid" rule.

deeper than honour, deeper than pride,
deeper than lust & deeper than love,
is the getting of it all.
The seizing and the holding on.
The jaws locked, biting into power & holding on.

How about we have only one master thread titled "Television wherein all television related topics, shows, etc. could be discussed?

While I do not watch television at home I have enjoyed a few episodes of a few different programs and found the production value of some to be superb.

Why don't we fork the forum from the .ca to .tv for TV shows. Then we can discuss The Young and The Restless with reckless abandon.

Oh and. . .

No, I wasn't giving you shit, Nordic for your OP. Just, I've always thought that the .tv descriptor looked stupid when they rolled that out. But we could do it! Just a stupid forum for shit we've seen and maybe not seen through the tooooooooooob. www. rigorousintuition.tv

Just make it only a pure satire site. (I guess that's my mindset these days as I working on other projects)

When tempers flare up "take it to the .tv"

It's a great show. Here's one of my favourite scenes:

My feelings mimic Nordic's precisely. They don't nearly go far enough - no controlling financial interests or sponsorship, less lobbying than the reality, no intelligence agencies, no war as policy, etc. but good otherwise and maybe that will unfold.

I watched The Act of Killing last night and western government involvement in Indonesia was only mentioned once. During awards acceptance speeches, however, the filmmakers apparently called out the US and UK governments.

I haven't watched it yet but you know how these things work. If the film had emphasized the decisive Western involvement in the Indonesian mass murders, dictatorship, and history of underdevelopment and exploitation, the film would have been classified as biased or at best as having a "noble cause" and the filmmakers would have likely been at few if any awards acceptance speeches to call out the US and UK governments there.

I admit HofC is a guilt pleasure of mine. I don't see anything redeeming in it though. It is basically dictator porn. The viewer identifies with a politician who in ascending to the presidency without election, exploits, jails and murders the innocent. It is like "Pinochet: The Wonder Years".

Dexter, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, etc are just America's pretty and clever affirmations to itself to rationalize the evil it does. Was it better when America just had Davey Crocket and Leave it to Beaver? Probably not. I'm just hoping for a balance coming to the force is all.

I randomly watched an old episode of Gunsmoke the other day. A show "before my time" -- so I think this is the only one I have ever seen. It was a bit of great storytelling that reflected the psyche (what I believe of it) of the day. It was about the consequences of being an unlikely thief, yet done in a "Leave it to Beaver" way. There were the "good" and the "bad". But the bad weren't steeped in total evil. The bad characters displayed restraint whilst the good character was the one who did the wrong. In the end they all just did the "right" thing.

Well, I would disagree that the viewer identifies with Underwood. It's more of a horror story, like watching a viper stalk its prey and then devouring it. You almost can't help but admire the sheer predatory, opportunistic instincts that the creature has. Like watching the famous "Honey Badger" video on Youtube.

I've never seen anything quite like it. I mean, I just thought of "Scarface," but the guy in Scarface actually has a conscience that leads to his downfall.

Frank Underwood and his wife? No conscience whatsoever.

I like how it shows the government as irredeemably corrupt. Which is accurate. And the acting is just fantastic. All the characters, even the ones with fairly small but recurring roles, are so great.

The one bit of casting that I don't like that much is the President. But I suppose casting someone who seems like such a milquetoast lackey was deliberate.
