Honouring the Obelisk

Paul Janman and I spent today floating down that river known as the Great South Road, turning occasionally up certain tributaries and beaching ourselves often on traffic islands and litter-strewn reserves, as we inspected, and - where necessary - replenished the geocaches we have hidden between central Auckland and the old border settlement of Te Paina/Port Russell/Mercer. The Great South Road Geocache Experiment is our contribution to A Sense of Place, an exhibition being held in Papakura Art Gallery until June the 10th.

Near the end of the day Paul and I made a visit to the so-called Bombay Obelisk, a handful of sad-looking volcanic rocks that were pushed out of the route of the southern motorway in the 1990s and now stand on a bank overlooking indifferent traffic. For the neo-Nazis, conspiracy theorists, Maori-bashers, and anti-semites who promote the notion that New Zealand was settled thousands of years ago by an advanced white civilisation, the Obelisk is the remains of an observatory erected by ancient Aryan scientists. In the website we've set up for our geocaching experiment we've described the Obelisk as Stonehenge for Racists.

During a section of Native Affairs' recent expose of the believers in an ancient white civilisation, Martin Doutre, the Holocaust Denier, 9/11 Truther and author of that classic of pseudo-history, Ancient Celtic New Zealand, showed off the Obelisk to reporter Iulia Leilua. As Leilua nodded with an understandable lack of enthusiasm, Doutre denounced the 'apartheid' system that Maori have supposedly imposed on the indigenous white people of New Zealand, and explained that the marks bulldozers had apparently left on the side of one of the obelisk's rocks were actually made thousands of years ago by Celts.

Doutre and his fellow pseudo-historians accuse a vast and intricate conspiracy of troublemaking Maori, politically correct academics, cowed National Party politicians, and United Nations bureaucrats of systematically obscuring this country's glorious white history. Doutre has even spoken to teams of demolitions experts wandering the hinterland of Te Ika a Maui, searching for ancient stone structures to disintegrate.

I would never stoop to such measures, despite my unsympathetic discussion of the pseudo-historians on Native Affairs last week. I did, however, feel the need to leave a small and temporary mark on the Bombay Obelisk today. Paul decided that I was paying tribute to The Who's greatest album, which includes that epic, synth-assisted denunciation of uncritical thinking, 'Won't Get Fooled Again'...

David Icke's Kiwi fans - and their political friends

Image

David Icke has been getting some well-deserved mockery in the New Zealand Herald. Icke, who will be giving a lecture in Auckland on August the 6th, insists that humanity has been enslaved by an extraterrestrial reptilian species whose members disguise themselves as famous and powerful humans like the Queen Elizabeth II and George W Bush.

Icke's conspiracy theories demonise groups of humans as well reptiles. He believes that an international network of Jews plots against the interests of humanity, and blames Jews for both World War One and the Bolshevik revolution.

In an article published last weekend the Herald's Catherine Gaffaney described David Icke's long career as a conspiracy theorist and eschatologist. She remembered how he claimed, almost twenty years ago, that New Zealand would soon sink beneath the seas because of a series of natural disasters, and noted his insistence that he is the son of God. In another article published by the Herald, Rohan Smith mentioned Icke's belief that the moon is a gigantic alien space station. Smith suggested that Icke gets 'laughed out of most places he visits', because of the obviously ludicrous nature of his ideas.

But not everyone in New Zealand finds David Icke laughable. The Franklin E Local, a giveaway magazine based in the rural region just south of Auckland, recently ran a long and respectful interview with the man. The Franklin E Local is published in Pukekohe, but its website makes it widely accessible, and its articles about race relations and supposed cover-ups of New Zealand history have won it a cult following amongst right-wing activists in many parts of the country.

The E Local's editor Myklejon Winckel believes that a large and technologically sophisticated white civilisation existed thousands of years ago in New Zealand, before being overrun and destroyed by Polynesian ancestors of the Maori. According to Winckel, evidence of this ancient civilisation is being assiduously suppressed by an alliance of politically correct academics, Maori radicals, and corrupt politicians.

Back in 2008 I published an open letter to Myklejon Winckel and the Franklin E Local, in which I argued that the two creators and proponents of the theory of an ancient white civilisation in New Zealand, Martin Doutre and Kerry Bolton, were white supremacists and Holocaust deniers who lacked any training in the study of the past. Martin Doutre had been a regular contributor to Franklin E Local, and he conveniently turned up in the comments thread under my open letter to deny the Holocaust and show how little he knew about the history of New Zealand. I have not been the only person to draw attention to Franklin E Local's exercises in racist conspiracy theory: Maori activist Justin Taua and philosopher Matthew Dentith have both criticised the magazine.

In 2013 Alan Titford, a friend of Martin Doutre and a loud proponent of the 'whites were here first' fantasy, was convicted of rape and politically-motivated arson and sent to prison for twenty-four years. Maori Television's Native Affairs programme subsequently ran an investigation into Titford, and his links with E Local and a network of anti-Maori conspiracy theorists. The E Local refused to accept that Titford was a rapist and an arsonist, suggesting that he was the victim of a conspiracy designed to silence critics of Maoridom.

The white tangata whenua, and other bullshit from the ‘One New Zealand’ crew

Over the past 30 years a growing a minority of New Zealanders has decided that the first inhabitants of their country had white rather than brown skin. They believe that one or more European peoples emigrated to these islands thousands of years ago, and established a populous and technologically sophisticated civilisation here. This pigmentopia was invaded and conquered by the ancestors of Māori. The warlike Polynesians slew the white men they found, took the women as wives, and appropriated the indigenes’ greenstone carvings.

The “Bombay Obelisk” is only one of scores of supposed relics of a lost civilisation. Like the piles of rocks that can still be found on Auckland’s volcanoes, the obelisk allegedly helped ancient New Zealanders plot the movements of the stars and make abstruse mathematical calculations.

Last week the “white tangata whenua” theory made an appearance in the mainstream media, as Mike Barrington published a lengthy and remarkably uncritical article in the Northern Advocate, an article that was republished on the website of the Advocate’s sister publication, the New Zealand Herald. Barrington reported that Noel Hilliam, a longtime believer in ancient white civilisation, had excavated two skulls and sent them to Edinburgh University, where an unnamed pathologist had examined them and decided that they had come from Wales three thousand years ago.

Barrington’s article was quickly criticised on social media. Māori condemned Hilliam for invading their burial sites and disturbing their kōiwi; journalists asked Barrington why he had not asked a trained scholar of New Zealand’s past about Hilliam; archaeologists mocked the notion of a distinctively Welsh skull.

University of Edinburgh pathologists denied any contact with Hilliam, and Vice published an article about a grave-robbing amateur historian from New Zealand. By the end of the week Mike Barrington’s article had disappeared from the websites of the Advocate and the Herald.

Mike Barrington’s article may have talked nonsense about New Zealand history, but it did provide a reasonably accurate narrative of the careers of the country’s pseudo-historians. Barrington correctly named Kerry Bolton’s 1987 booklet Lords of the Soil as the first published argument for a white tangata whenua. By the time he wrote Lords of the Soil, Bolton had already helped found and run the New Zealand National Socialist Party, which folded shortly after a disastrous performance in the 1975 general election, the Nationalist Workers Party, which offered a slightly more discrete version of the same politics, and the Church of Odin, which combined the worship of Norse deities with more neo-Nazism.

But New Zealand fascists like Kerry Bolton encountered problems their counterparts in Europe did not. Unlike the white peoples of Europe, Pākehā had not lived long in New Zealand. They were latecomers, not an indigenous people. The National Socialist and Nationalist Workers parties condemned immigration from Asia and the Pacific Islands as a threat to New Zealand identity, and warned about the dangers of miscegenation. But rhetoric about overseas invaders sounded curious, coming from the descendants of invaders.

Bolton resolved the problem of indigenity by deciding that the first inhabitants of New Zealand had been white rather than brown. In Lords of the Soil he seized on the oral traditions of Māori who live in the central North Island, traditions which speak of an iwi called Ngāti Hotu, whose members eventually blended with those of other groups. Māori society was fluid, especially in the first centuries of life in Aotearoa, and it was not unusual for iwi to form and dissolve.

But Bolton argued that Ngāti Hotu were not merely another Māori iwi: they were, he insisted, a different people, a “white warrior tribe”, whose ancestors had come to these islands long before Māori. After being attacked by Polynesian invaders, Ngāti Hotu had retreated inland, and made a last stand in the mountains near Lake Taupo. Although Ngāti Hotu had died out, their ancient presence in New Zealand foreshadowed and legitimised the colonisation of the country in the 19th century. When he raised the Union Jack in 1840, Hobson was retaking New Zealand for what Bolton calls “the Europoid race”.

Did Israelite Vikings discover New Zealand?

Image

I wonder whether Hobson's Pledge isn't making a mistake by lining up behind someone as discredited as Noel Hilliam.

Hilliam told the Northern Advocate that the skulls he'd found in the Kaipara had been examined by an unnamed expert, and that the expert decided that one of them had blonde hair and that both of them belonged to people born in Wales three thousand years ago.

Anyone who knows anything about the study of the past will immediately recognise that statement as absurd, for three reasons: the colour of a long-deceased person's hair can't be deduced by an examination of their skull; Wales didn't exist, as a cultural or political entity, three thousand years ago; and there has never been a distinctively Welsh skull.

Hilliam's own history of absurd claims - his insistence that he'd found a Nazi U boat in the Kaipara in 2008, for example - and his admission that he is part of the same cause as Kerry Bolton, New Zealand's most notorious neo-Nazi, further undermine his credibility.
