Belgian officials say that at least three people have been killed in gunfire at the Jewish Museum in Brussels.

Belgian foreign minister, Didier Reynders, in a post on Twitter, said he was "shocked by the murders committed at the Jewish Museum" on Saturday afternoon. He said he had seen the bodies of the victims.

Interior minister, Joelle Milquet, said at least three were killed in the incident, and a Brussels fire department spokesman said one person was wounded.

No details were immediately available, but according to RTBF, a Belgian broadcasting company, a person with a backpack opened fire then fled.

Police have closed off the area around the museum, near the centre of Brussels, and numerous ambulances were at the scene.

Police have detained a suspect and are hunting for another after three people were shot dead and a fourth seriously wounded in an armed attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels.

The bloodshed, which came on the eve of national and European Parliament elections, led authorities to immediately strengthen anti-terror measures.

Belgian foreign minister Didier Reynders, who was in the area at the time, said the scene "was terrible and left me shocked" as he saw the bodies of two of the victims lying at the entrance of the museum, in the capital's upmarket Sablon neighbourhood.

Mr Reynders said "you cannot help to think that when we see a Jewish museum, you think of an anti-Semitic act. But the investigation will have to show the causes".

I'm now hearing claims that two or three Jewish people were stabbed hours after the shooting, but finding it hard to substantiate.

Two Jews attacked near Paris shortly after Brussels deaths
By JOSEPH STRICH

The attack outside the suburban Paris synagogue comes just hours after the deadly shooting at the Jewish Museum in Belgium; French interior minister condemns attack.

PARIS – Two young religious Jews were attacked Saturday evening in Creteil near Paris as they left a synagogue, the French Interior Ministry announced Sunday.

According to the ministry, the incident occurred around 8:30 pm. when the two brothers, aged 21 and 18, and both wearing kippot, were severely beaten by two unknown men, who then fled, one on foot and the second on a bicycle.

Speaking in the town of Tulle, where he went to vote for the European parliament, President Francois Hollande expressed “the will of France to allow all Jews of France to feel in perfect security and calm.”

He called on the country to do everything so that “such acts will not recur... We are doing everything in order to find the perpetrators and they will be found.”

Laurent Cathala, the mayor of Creteil, a city with a strong Jewish population south of Paris, said: “The aggression has an anti-Semitic characteristic, there is no doubt about it.”

The American Jewish Committee strongly condemned the attack. Reports indicate that both brothers were severely beaten with brass knuckles, but fortunately are expected to recover.

This assault follows Saturday’s attack in Brussels, where four people were murdered at the city’s Jewish Museum.

Belgian authorities are searching for the perpetrators.

“One anti-Semitic tragedy on the heels of another underscores the very real dangers for Jews today in the heart of Europe, even as we recognize that the governments stand steadfastly against any such manifestations,” said AJC executive director David Harris. “Clearly, far more still needs to be done – from beefing up security at Jewish institutions to stronger intelligence- gathering, from tougher judicial action to, in the longer term, better education in the school systems for fostering a climate of mutual respect.”

The AJC has been relentlessly calling attention to the growing menace of anti-Semitism in Europe since 2000, when a noticeable rise took place. Most recently, the AJC took out a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal on May 13th to highlight the issue, while French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, speaking the day before at the AJC Global Forum, forcefully condemned all forms of anti-Semitism and said the government would not tolerate any such hateful acts.

AJC Paris director Simone Rodan is in very close touch with French government officials and Jewish community leaders in response to Saturday’s attack in Creteil.

Meanwhile, a young French jihadist died recently while carrying out a suicide attack near Moussoul, in northern Iraq. The man previously fought as a jihadist in Syria, according to sources close to the French special forces. The terrorist was identified as a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) named Abou al Qaqa al Faransi.

BRUSSELS — A man seized and identified by Belgian police following Saturday's deadly shooting at Brussels' Jewish Museum has admitted to having been present at the time of the incident, Belga news agency reported, citing prosecutors.

He was the driver of the car that left after the shooting, in which three died, according to Brussels' public prosecutor. However, it is not yet certain whether he was involved in the incident. Police are looking for a second individual who fled on foot.

Meanwhile, one injured person is still in a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Belga, which reported that three of the four victims have been identified. The dead included two men and one woman, Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur said, according to Belga.

The incident occurred at around 3:50 p.m. local time (1350 GMT) in a busy area of central Brussels. Witnesses said that an unknown person entered the museum, fired shots and then fled in a car.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders happened to be near the museum in central Brussels at the time of the incident.

"I am shocked," Reynders told journalists. "I ran to the museum and I see just in the entrance of the museum two people on the ground," he added, suggesting that the attack may have had anti-Semitic motives.

The event took place a day before Belgians go to the polls for national and European elections.

"One cannot reach definitive conclusions," said Interior Minister Joelle Milquet, who also rushed to the scene. "There are clearly strong assumptions," she said, adding that security had been increased at other Jewish religious and cultural sites.

"Our country and all Belgians, irrespective of their language, their origin or their faith, are united and together in the face of this attack in a Jewish cultural venue," read a statement from the national government.

Jewish groups reacted with shock, but noted that the theme of attacks on Jewish centers and museums remains a recurring trend in such incidents.

"Today, the entire Jewish world mourns the innocent victims who lost their lives in this horrible attack. Tomorrow, we must all work together to ensure that this doesn't happen again," said World Jewish Congress president Ronald S Lauder.

"If that means to improve security at Jewish sites in Europe, we have no choice. It must be done. If not, more people may be able to carry out such terrible crimes," the WJC president stated.

(JNS.org) The French police made five new arrests related to the shooting at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels this past May. Four people, including an Israeli couple, were killed in the attack.

A spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor’s office, Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre, said that three men and two women were arrested Tuesday in Marseille, the Associated Press reported. The newly arrested individuals are suspected of helping the Muslim man accused of carrying out the shooting, 29-year-old French national of Algerian origin Mehdi Nemmouche, who six days after the attack was arrested at a Marseille bus station while in possession of weapons similar to those used in the museum shooting.

Nemmouche, who has allegedly previously been involved with Islamic extremists in Syria, was charged with “murder in a terrorist context.” On Friday, he was remanded into custody for another three months.

Belgium siege: Armed suspects surrender to police, no indications of terrorism

Three suspects in an armed hostage-taking incident in the Belgian city of Ghent have surrendered to police, reports said, as officials said there were no indications of terrorism.

Police had earlier surrounded an apartment after armed men took a captive in a working-class area of the north-western city.

The three suspects were "taken outside, with their hands in the air" by special armed police, Flemish-speaking VRT public television reported.

The victim was safe and well and three other men had been arrested, a spokeswoman for state prosecutors said.

"Three men have been taken away though there were no weapons found," she said.

"It's not entirely clear whether someone was in fact taken hostage."

Neighbours said the occupants of the apartment were "drug traffickers", but Belgian authorities would only confirm that they suspected it was an isolated incident with no terror links.

"There is no indication that this is linked to terrorism, the Islamic State or what is happening at the moment in Sydney," the Ghent prosecutor's office said.

Deaths In Anti-Terror Raid In Belgium: Reports
Explosions and gunfire were apparently heard near a station and an official reportedly said the operation was "jihadist-related".
18:07, UK, Thursday 15 January 2015

Three people have died in an anti-terror raid in eastern Belgium, according to reports.

Federal prosecutors were quoted as saying there had been a police operation near the centre of Verviers.

The Belga news agency said there were several casualties and police activity was continuing.

Explosions and gunfire were apparently heard near the station, according to Belgium's public broadcaster RTBF

"An operation is under way," a source in the mayor's office told AFP without giving further details.

Another official said separately it was "jihadist-related".

The incident reportedly took place in a street called Rue des Ecoles.

Earlier, Belgian authorities arrested a man suspected of supplying the gunmen who killed 17 people in Paris, as funerals for the victims of the attacks continued.

Police in Charleroi are holding the man on suspicion of arms dealing after he handed himself in to police in the city on Tuesday.

He told officers he had been in touch with Amedy Coulibaly, the militant who took hostages in a Jewish supermarket in the French capital and was later killed by security forces.

According to reports, the man said he had conned Coulibaly in a car sale.

But police later found evidence the pair were negotiating the sale of bullets for a 7.62mm caliber firearm - the type needed for the Tokarev pistol Coulibaly used in his attack on the supermarket in Paris that left four hostages dead.
