Norway on High Alert Amid Warnings of Attack Next Week

Police in Norway are on high alert after receiving intelligence that nationals returning from Syria may be plotting a terrorist attack within days against the Scandinavian country.

Information obtained by Norway’s security service, PST, suggests an attack could be imminent, the unit’s chief, Benedicte Bjoernland, said July 24. Authorities have strengthened their presence at Norway’s borders, airports and train stations, and police in all districts are at a heightened state of preparedness.

Police officers in Norway’s capital, Oslo, have been stationed at focal points in the city including parliament and the royal palace as well as at shopping centers, spokesman Kaare Hansen said by phone yesterday. Authorities have followed up on a number of tips received since yesterday, the police said, without providing more details.

Norway’s Jewish museums in Oslo and Trondheim closed yesterday on concern they may be targeted in any attack, while the U.S. embassy in the capital warned citizens to remain cautious.

The terror threat comes as Norway prepares for a children’s soccer tournament, involving teams from more than 100 nations. The tournament, which starts tomorrow, has an “extensive” security plan and the organizers are working closely with authorities to ensure safety, according to a statement on the Norway Cup website.

Jewish Museum

The alert follows a May attack at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels by a man authorities said may be the first European jihadist returning from Syria to carry out a deadly mission at home. The alleged perpetrator, Mehdi Nemmouche, is awaiting trial for the shooting deaths of two Israeli tourists, a French woman and a Belgian museum employee.

VIDEO: Norway Reveals Terror Attack Threat Linked to Syria
Norwegian police estimate that about 50 people seen as posing a threat have left Norway to fight in Syria, and about half of those have since returned, spokesman Trond Hugubakken said July 24.

Foreign fighters in Syria who hold U.S. and European Union passports number “in the four digits, so it’s a serious problem,” Michael Vickers, the Pentagon’s top intelligence official, said this week at the annual Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado.

Norwegian police are monitoring individuals who have fought in Syria and are now returning to the Nordic country, Bjoernland said. These combatants are likely to have gained experience using weapons and to have a lower threshold for violence, she said.

Syrian Crisis

More than 170,000 people have died and over 10 million have fled their homes since civil war broke out in Syria in March 2011. The United Nations and aid agencies say the conflict is the worst humanitarian disaster since the 1994 Rwandan genocide, with 6.5 million people displaced inside Syria and 3 million more seeking refuge outside the country.

The greatest threat to Norway is posed by extreme Islamists, Bjoernland said.

In May, police arrested three Norwegian citizens on terror charges. The men, one of whom was born in Somalia and the other two in the former Yugoslavia, represented a threat to the country and its allies, police said at the time.

Authorities suspect an attack could occur on July 28 to coincide with the Eid celebration that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, TV2 reported, citing unidentified people. Odd Reidar Humlegaard, director of Norway’s police force, declined to comment in Oslo yesterday.

Muslim Concerns

Norway may also be a target after backing the U.S. in Libya and Afghanistan, Elaine Valther Hansen, a senior advisor at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, said in an interview with Aftenposten.

The threat is a concern for Norway’s Muslim population, NTB reported, citing Ghulam Sarwar, head of Oslo’s largest mosque. “This is a burden for ordinary Muslims, Muslims are going to be hated by neighbors because of this case,” he said.

STORY: European Sanctions Could Hit Russia's Achilles Heel: Capital Flight
There were about 121,000 registered Muslims in Norway at the end of 2013, equivalent to 2.4 percent of the population, according to Statistics Norway.

Norway’s strategy of going public with the terror threat echoes its approach in 1973 when it thwarted a planned attack on an oil installation about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Oslo, Tore Bjoergo, a professor at the Norwegian police academy, said in an interview with Aftenposten.

News of the latest threat to Norway came just two days after the country marked the third anniversary of the massacre of 77 people, most of them linked to the Labor Party that was in government at the time, by Anders Behring Breivik. The 35-year-old, who is serving a 21-year prison sentence, has said his acts were meant to prevent the spread of what he called “cultural Marxism” and the “Islamization” of Europe.

Asked to confirm that the groups are still active in Norway, Defense Ministry spokesman Erik Senstad responded: ''What Hansen said then still applies.''

It's not anything groundbreaking to point this out; in fact it's become a bit cliche. But I find myself wondering once again about that question, asked here a couple of years back, "How does Gladio extend into the present day?"

One of the biggest post 9/11 massive scale brazen terror attacks was the Norway Oslo 2011 terrorist attack where a single Christian neo Nazi named Anders Brevik blew up part of downtown Oslo and the government building and then went on to kill dozens of kids on an island, killing 77 all total. Media assumed it was Islamic terrorism. But it was the work of one man who did what he did because he hates Islam. Part of the recent pro Israel/anti Muslim neo Nazis in Europe.

Terror attacks, rarely if ever happen when were "warned" specifically about them. Listening to William Cooper's June 19th 2001 podcast where talks of the elite soon staging a massive attack using bin Laden is chilling tho

After this latest inexcusable massacre, Israel badly needs to regain a lot of lost ground in Europe. Too many people have simply been too appalled by the sheer blatant televised, live-blogged depravity of it. Israeli propaganda now requires some serious catapulting. So I fear there will be a "Palestinian terror attack"* somewhere in Europe in the fairly near future, ideally effectively in Germany, most likely against a synagogue or some other Jewish institution. I hope that fear is unfounded.

*Or perhaps even an actual Palestinian terror attack. If I were one of the many Palestinian people who have lost a child, or several children, or indeed an entire extended family in this latest slaughter (or in one of the earlier ones), I too might find my ethical standards slipping somewhat. Suicidal individuals with murderous impulses should not be impossible to find. Where there's a will there's a way.

Maybe that's why the last time I called the suicide hotline they asked if I could drive a truck.

Well, they're taking it very seriously, this is the first alert of this type since 1974. There's armed police everywhere (Norwegian police don't normally carry guns) and they just got permission to call in military personnel if necessary (National guard, royal guard in Oslo, and special forces, who double as a nationwide SWAT-team).

Here's the local cruise-ship dock yesterday:

As for Gladio - there's still a few good old boys around. The US embassy had a lot of them on their payroll up until a couple of years ago (retired cops) when it was revealed they were doing surveillance for the US embassy. The Norwegian establishment has always been very close to the US, so if the strategy of tension (or some bastard child) is still in operation they're in Norway too.

I knew there was at least one member here that lives in Norway, but couldn't remember who it was. Here's hoping everything works out and there's no attack.

I'd bet that the current modified version of the stay-behind networks is still shockingly similar to that of decades past. Same right-wing beliefs, same American intelligence oversight, same operational goals. The same fraternal trappings among the inner group that carries out offensive actions. Probably still formally the responsibility of NATO's SACEUR, always an American.

Would I be wrong in thinking there's a high likelihood that the horrible Breivik incident was a product of this secret world? I need to revisit the RI thread on that and catch up on more recent information about the case.

In his manifesto and during interrogation, Breivik claimed membership in an "international Christian military order", which he calls the new Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Solomonici (PCCTS, Knights Templar). According to Breivik, the order was established as an "anti-Jihad crusader-organisation" that "fights" against "Islamic suppression" in London in April 2002 by nine men: two Englishmen, a Frenchman, a German, a Dutchman, a Greek, a Russian, a Norwegian (apparently Breivik), and a Serb (supposedly the initiator, not present, but represented by Breivik). The compendium gives a "2008 estimate" that there are between 15 and 80 "Justiciar Knights" in Western Europe, and an unknown number of civilian members, and Breivik expects the order to take political and military control of Western Europe.

Sounds awfully familiar. Just swap out "islam" for "communism"

I haven't seen any definite proof that Breivik was part of a neo Gladio Strategy of Tension plot, but I would NOT be surprised if it were the case. But just like Tim Mcveigh and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed; puppets and stooges
will always claim to have acted alone regardless.

Breivik seemed to be kind of (black lodge) Masonic, which does recall P2 in Italy. But Breivik represents that new neo-neo Nazi type: super anti arab immigrant, pro Israel.

So eerie...yeah the "NWO gubment gonna grab our guns" meme is old...but the rest of what he says...to think he was killed just a FEW MONTHS later. eeeps!

Listen as he talks about how ludicrous it is about steel reinforced core columns and building integrity with Mcveigh then segueways into tying into bin Laden.
This is like hardcore 9/11 truth before 9/11 even happened. Forget Alex Jones, Cooper freaking nails it pre 9/11.
