Should we give two weeks from now for everyone to get the book and read Book 1 (pages 1-48)?
Perhaps more or less?

Two weeks for that would suit me, I'll buy it on Amazon (probably won't have time to look for it in the used bookstores).

Mine is on the way. That time frame sounds fine to me. If I like the book, though, I can't promise to read slowly.
:wink
Should this thread be moved to the Book Forum once we get started?

Yes, I think once we get going we can move this to the Book Forum (Sept 1st) and pop back on to General Discussion briefly later on when we are soliciting/voting on new selections. I've started reading the book and have some stuff that is churning, so I'm looking forward to the discussion.

I just read this book, the latest addition to the survivor literature. I highly recommend it.

http://www.amazon.com/Surviving-Evil-Co ... 0981537634

Beginning at age thirteen, Karen Wetmore was subjected to horrific treatment in Vermont State Hospital and related facilities. Through years of investigative journalism, and numerous Freedom of Information Act requests, she was able do document that she was a victim of secret CIA mind control experiments as an adolescent, and of sexual abuse by one of her psychiatrists. Karen's psychiatrists included Robert Hyde, M.D., who was cleared at TOP SECRET as the contractor on CIA LSD experiments conducted under MKULTRA Subprojects 8, 10, 63, and 66. Karen calls for an investigation into the nearly 3000 deaths at Vermont State Hospital from 1952 to 1973, when CIA money was pouring into the hospital. These deaths may have provided cover for terminal experiments conducted at the hospital.

It would be pretty cool if people were willing to do this with a work of fiction too, concurently. Books like1984 are just as useful in understanding the world as a good non fiction can be.

I would be up for that, I'm a huge fan of fiction. I am currently reading an author of fiction named Jorge Luis Borges. He has become possibly my all-time favorite writer (of fiction, at least). There is a distinctly mind-bending alternate reality RI flavor to his stories, and they are eminently quotable. A collection of his short stories might be a nice addition to the list.

Arrived this morning...unable to stop reading at page 48, I'm afraid. :thumbsup

Edited to add: oh, I just thought, is that a really big 'no-no' when one is part of a book club - to read past where it was agreed? I don't know - I'm new to this game.

Splurging is allowed, as long as I guess you don't data dump future chapters into the discussion too much. Seems like people are getting their books in and starting to read and over read.
I'm wondering if people are still needing some time or waiting for their book? We could move the date up to the 30th instead of the 1st if people are on point. Or we can continue with the 1st if people are still book less.
