Huh.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – An attorney said Wednesday that the body of a mystery man was decomposing in his car in the tony Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Southern California for nearly two weeks before he was found by authorities on July 17.

Inside his home, detectives discovered more than 1,200 guns, scopes, 6.5 tons of ammunition, bows and arrows, knives, machetes and $230,000 in cash.

They also found eight of the 14 vehicles registered to the man stashed across Los Angeles, including a Toyota SUV designed to drive underwater.

Who the man was and how he came to accumulate the arsenal and vehicles are questions authorities are still trying to answer.

Veteran defense attorney Harland Braun represents the man’s fiancée Catherine Nebron and identified him as Jeffrey Alan Lash.

That’s also the name coroner’s officials are working with and they’re in touch with a relative to try to officially identify the body, said Craig Harvey, chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

Lash and Nebron were together for 17 years and she believed him when he told her that he worked as an undercover operative for multiple unnamed government agencies, Braun said.

“The story itself sounds totally crazy but then how do you explain all this?” Braun said. “There’s no evidence he was a drug dealer or he stole these weapons, or had any criminal source of income, no stolen property, all the stuff you’d look for.”

LAPD Deputy Chief of Detectives Kirk Albanese said there’s no indication the man was doing anything illegal with the weapons. Detectives were reviewing everything, but so far the guns appeared to be registered to him. Many were still in boxes or had price tags.

Braun said Nebron and two friends were in a car at a supermarket early July 4, when Lash felt hot and had trouble breathing. For three hours they tried to ice him down.

“He wouldn’t go to a hospital and didn’t want any 911 call,” Braun said. When he died, Nebron parked him in a car down the street from the condo they shared, the lawyer said.

Police say they don’t believe there was any foul play involved in his death, but the official cause has been deferred pending further investigation.

Lash told Nebron the government agencies would take care of his body and the items in the home, so Nebron and her friends took a trip to Oregon, distraught.

When they returned about 10 days later, Nebron was shocked to still see Lash’s body in the car.

She contacted Braun, and together they contacted Los Angeles police, who found the body, guns and more.

The guns are worth more than $5 million, Braun said, and along with the ammunition, took three days to remove from the home, which remains piled 6-feet high with items throughout.

“Hoarding times 10,” Braun said.

Neighbors thought Lash was dying of cancer because he appeared to be degenerating over the past year, but Lash told Nebron that he had been exposed to nerve-damaging chemicals on a mission and his condition was worsening.

The mystery behind a Los Angeles gun fanatic found decomposing in a car last week has deepened as his fiancée's family said he was an alien-hybrid secretly working for the government.

Lash was also believed to be an alien "sent to Earth to protect us," according to Laura VadBunker, the mother of 39-year-old Dawn VadBunker, who used to work for Nebron.

"I can't believe this," Laura VadBunker told KTLA. "It's worse than a Twilight Zone movie. He was part alien and part human and was out to save the world."

I am eagerly awaiting the autopsy results.

Coverage spun out into damage control kinda fast.

The Fabians at The Guardian state Authorities’ tentative conclusion is that Jeffrey Alan Lash was a rich eccentric so caught up in his make-believe world of spying that his fiancee believed it, too ... but pesky details are pesky ...

Lash grew up in a modest home near the Los Angeles international airport and had ambitions at one point to become a microbiologist like his father. Then, according to his stepmother, he largely cut himself off from his family and became secretive about what he was doing. “He was just a loner, as far as we were concerned,” Shirley Anderson told the Los Angeles Times. “He just became weird because he changed all of a sudden.”

There was no immediate explanation of how he obtained his money or what, if anything, he had done for a living. According to police estimates, Lash spent at least half a million dollars, and perhaps more than twice that, on his weapons stash. The condominium, which is in Nebron-Gorin’s name, last sold for $440,000 in 1991.

Predictably, New York Daily News punches it up considerably: Dead LA man who had 1,200 guns, underwater car identified; believed to be ‘part alien’ secret government worker ... quoting a former employee. This should only get more interesting from here.

Detail: There are no fucking underwater SUVs, for the love of Christ. What they're referring to is the basic off-road waterproofing modifications to the engine casing that allow you to submerge your chassis through sippi holes without killing your engine. Nobody is driving cars underwater in 2015, alas.

Okay…okay, okay…this is what the Guardian closes on:

…One employee of the Casa Nostra restaurant said Lash and Nebron-Gorin had eaten most of their meals there for the past seven years. Invariably, Lash would order raw filet mignon.

on edit: It doesn't even look like the Casa Nostro in Pacific Palisades even serves filet mignon, let alone raw. But if it did, it'd be expensive: http://www.casanostraristorantela.com/main/

It doesn't sound like he grew up rich near the airport, and no one seems to have witnessed him working a day job. In this economy you don't really just amass enough wealth to accumulate all this stuff by accident.

Here we have another reason why RI needs a fabulously wealthy donor to fund our own investigative team.

Sure would like to know some details about that "microbiologist" dad.

They're sensationalizing it. Carpaccio is raw yes, but unremarkable in context.

Pacific Palisades has a weird angry-white-people vibe. Which is too bad because it's geographically stunning. On paper it's my favorite neighborhood in LA. But the people ... Oh, and it's rich as hell too in case that wasn't clear. Super rich and white.

Paramilitary operations in Southern California with sinister conspiratainment overtones? All I can think of is, "the spirit of Nelson Bunker Hunt lives on"

Here's a bit of local color on the topic:
http://patch.com/california/malibu/s/f4xci/mystery-deepens-over-weapons-cache-in-pacific-palisades

The attorney, well-known local defense lawyer Harland Braun, told the paper the man died in the parking lot of Bristol Farms on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica on July 4. His fiancee -- who believed Lash worked with a secret government agency -- drove the body back to Pacific Palisades, left the body there and fled to Oregon, believing his government handlers would collect his remains, Braun said.

The fiancee, Catherine Nebron, had apparently been with Lash for 17 years and was convinced he worked as some type of undercover government operative, according to Braun, who said the man had cancer.

Two days after Lash’s death, a woman who worked for Nebron -- 39-year- old Dawn VadBunker -- was reported missing from Oxnard. VadBunker’s mother, Laura VadBunker, told KTLA by telephone that Lash had convinced her daughter and Nebron that he was some type of alien or human/alien hybrid “sent to Earth to protect us.”

Dawn VadBunker had apparently been with Lash and Nebron when the man died in Santa Monica, and she fled to Oregon with Nebron after his death, VadBunker’s mother said. She said her daughter is caught in the middle of the investigation and may be having a mental breakdown.

Here's a picture gallery:
http://ktla.com/2015/07/23/jeffrey-alan-lash-pacific-palisades-mystery-man-weapons-cache/

Anderson told the Los Angeles Times that Lash had grown up in a modest neighborhood in Westchester with a pianist mother and microbiologist father who owned a medical laboratory. Lash dropped out of UCLA in the mid-1980s and had was a “loner,” Anderson told the newspaper.

Anderson said she was unaware of any independent wealth that would allow Lash to purchase millions of dollars in weaponry.

An attorney who represented Lash in 2009 also called his client’s behavior strange. Lash was charged with misdemeanor possession of a concealed weapon after being stopped by Culver City police, according to court documents. Because Lash had the ammunition and firearms in his vehicle properly stowed, the case was dropped, the attorney said.

Lash refused to give any contact information to the law firm, and would call once per day to get an update on the case, according to the lawyer.

One of the sources quoted an investigator who said that normally if he were a collector, they would see more exotic items in a cache of that volume. Lash's weapons were mostly new. However, this guns.com article says "he was probably a collector."

It also offers this bit that I haven't seen elsewhere:
“They always came in two separate cars. Neither had license plates, but no one ever stopped them,” said Francesco Schiff with the Casa Nostra restaurant. “He always paid cash, always had raw filet mignon. They never ate with friends.”

Thanks Perelandra, I did go back and see te carpaccio on the appetizer menu. I'm somewhat disappointed that it wasn't a 16oz slab of raw meat, because I'm fully on board with Lash being a half-extraterrestrial hybrid.

http://www.cinemablend.com/m/television ... 72952.html

Last season Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced us to the Inhumans. It looks like they’re not going anywhere as at least one recent Inhumans character from the comics will be making his TV debut sometime in Season 3.

Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel’s Television department was speaking during the Marvel TV panel at San Diego Comic-Con and he announced that the new season would see the introduction of the Inhuman named Lash to the series. We don’t really know anything beyond that, so whether Lash is going to become a series regular, or just a guest star, a hero, or a villain, is unknown.

Lash is relatively new Inhuman in the comics, he was first introduced in 2014. Lash is a big brute of a guy with great strength and agility, but he also has energy manipulation abilities so he can absorb and modify energy as well as blast you with it. His character in the comics is one who believes that not everybody who is capable of evolving via the Terrigen Mist, is necessarily worthy of the transformation. This certainly has the potential for conflict if Lash and Skye come into contact and he decides he doesn’t care for her.
