"The West"

I see this term a lot on this board. It has a history which goes back to the Roman Empire, but I am interested in its present usage which seems to correlate to the sphere of strongest Anglo-American influence.

Russia and South America are not part of "The West", it seems. Is Israel? Hungary?

What does "Western Culture" or "Western values" mean to the posters here? These terms feel forced and sometimes incoherent to me.

It's notable that Islamic culture has roots in Hellenistic, Judaic, and even Mesopotamian civilization, in common with the supposed "West".

What are people really trying to say in 2015 when they say "Western"?

This question has more than geopolitical significance, I think. It relates to all the endless discussions about the future of humans qualified with "at least in the West".

What is the meaning of "global" institutions mostly being located in "The West"? This is bigger than just imperialism, it also relates to the way people in the West see themselves. So much discussed on this board seems to circle back to this monolithic, institutionalized civilization. Which isn't to say obviously that people in other parts of the world don't have their own correspondent clusters of tangled, enigmatic baggage.
