Thought this case sounded familiar but a search for the kids name didn't bring anything up in the forum...

Pa. boy, 16, who stabbed family of 3 is ruled incompetent to stand trial

It's been almost two years since Zachary Lee Hockenberry - then just 14 - allegedly stabbed a husband and wife and their 17-year-old daughter in their Luzerne County home. But Hockenberry has yet to answer the charges.

That's because a county judge continues to rule Hockenberry, now 16, incompetent to stand trial, the Citizens Voice reports.
Zachary Lee Hockenberry, 16

According to the report, Hockenberry suffers from an arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of abnormal blood vessels in the brain that can cause seizures and confusion.

As a result, Luzerne County Judge Michael T. Vough first deemed Hockenberry incompetent to stand trial last summer.

Now the judge issued an order Tuesday reaffirming his ruling, meaning Hockenberry remain at Norristown State Hospital for continued treatment, with the criminal case against him remains stayed, the Citizens Voice writes, adding:

Hockenberry faces charges of murder and aggravated assault for allegedly stabbing David Sinoracki, 45, his wife, Bobbi Jo Sinoracki, and their 17-year-old daughter, Megan.

The family was attacked in their home in Kingston Twp. on Sept. 11, 2016. David Sinoracki died of a fatal wound to the chest, while his family members survived.

5 People, Including 3 Infants, Stabbed at NYC Day Care; Butcher Knife, Meat Cleaver Found at Scene
A 52-year-old woman is in custody at an area hospital, police said; a butcher knife and meat cleaver were found at the scene

A 52-year-old day care worker allegedly stabbed five people, including three baby girls no more than a month old, at an overnight facility in Queens early Friday, and cops say they found a butcher knife and meat cleaver at the scene.

A 3-day-old girl and a 1-month-old girl were stabbed in the stomach; a 20-day-old girl had a laceration to her ear, chin and lip. All are in critical but stable condition, authorities said. Two other people, a father of a child at the day care and another woman who worked there, were also stabbed at the Flushing center just before 4 a.m. Friday. The woman was stabbed eight times in the torso.

Police say the 52-year-old woman was found unconscious on the basement floor of the day care center on 161st Street with her left wrist slashed in what police say was a self-inflicted wound. She is in police custody at a hospital; officials said she has regained consciousness, but it's unclear if she's talking. Charges are pending.

Authorities say it appears the stabbing spree started with an attack on the adult female. The 31-year-old father who was injured intervened and was stabbed in the leg; then the attack on the children began. Someone called 911.

It wasn't clear whether the stabbed father's child was one of the infants stabbed. He, along with the worker stabbed in the torso, are hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Nine babies -- five girls, four boys -- were in the house at the time. Police say some other parents were there as well. It wasn't clear whether the facility was licensed or why it had so many newborns there at the time of the stabbing; state records indicate there was a registered business at the location.

An official briefed on the investigation tells News 4 it was a maternity center. Mothers would go there with their newborns and workers would help take care of the babies. It’s also a place where foreigners could have their babies here and those children would become American citizens.

Separately, NYPD officials said there was paperwork indicating it was a day care, though they are looking more into the exact nature of the center.

No possible motive has been revealed. Police said they received one 311 call there years ago -- a call about children screaming in 2011.

Video from the scene showed a heavy police presence, with dozens of law enforcement vehicles and officers swarming the scene. Later, officers accompanied by cops in white biohazard suits were seen carrying large bags to a specialized crime scene unit truck.

BARTOW, Fla. (FOX 13) - Police say they stopped two students from carrying out a plot to go on a stabbing spree at Bartow Middle School Tuesday.

Police say a teacher told the principal after hearing about the plan from a student, and the principal notified authorities. The two female students, ages 11 and 12, were apparently found hiding inside a bathroom just before they planned to carry out the attack.

The girls were found by the assistant principal in a search of the school after one of the students was reported missing from class.

After being brought to the principal's office, officers on campus discovered the girls had armed themselves with several weapons including paring and butcher knives, along with a pizza cutter, and planned to attack other students during the school day.

The girls admitted to being Satan worshipers and told police they were planning on attacking and killing as many students as possible.

Police say the girls were waiting in the bathroom for the opportunity to find smaller kids that they could overpower to be their victims.

The girls were taken into custody and further investigation of the girls' homes turned up a hand-drawn map of Bartow Middle School with the words, "Go to kill in bathroom," written on it.

Cell phone messages obtained from the girls' cell phones show they planned the attack for several days. In one message, one of the girls said, "We will leave body parts at the entrance and then we will kill ourselves," police say.

During an interview with officers, the girls told officers they wanted to kill at least 15 people.

They are both charged with conspiracy to commit murder and possession of a weapon on school property, among other charges.

"This is horrific and if I had children in school I'd be scared half to death," Bartow Police Chief Joe Hall.
"But remember, a student heard something, the student told a teacher, the teacher immediately reported that, which implemented our safety plan in this school district, which resulted in us apprehending both of these students before a single student was injured. The plan did work," he said.

A witness told the Evening Standard: "It was between two kitchen staff. They were in uniform.

"There was a lot of shouting and commotion. It looked like they were having a fight.

"One had fallen over and was on his back and the other was standing over him. I thought he was raining punches down, but then I saw the knife.

Footage that has since been deleted from Twitter appeared to show police leading a man away in handcuffs.

A Sony spokesperson said: "Sony Music confirmed there was an incident at Derry Street resulting in the building being evacuated.

"Two members of the catering team were involved in a violent altercation. The incident is now in the hands of the Metropolitan Police."

2 dead as man stabs 16 schoolgirls, 2 adults in rampage near Tokyo
KYODO NEWS KYODO NEWS - 2 hours ago - 19:25

KAWASAKI, JAPAN - Sixteen pupils waiting for their school bus and two parents of pupils who were nearby were stabbed by a man wielding knives in Kawasaki near Tokyo on Tuesday morning, leaving a girl and a man dead, police and school officials said.

The 16 schoolgirls, pupils of Caritas elementary school, a private Catholic school in the city, were attacked by the suspect in his 50s, who was holding knives in both hands. The suspect died in hospital as a result of a self-inflicted stab wound to the neck, police said.

A boy also sustained minor injuries in the attack, the police added.

The incident occurred at around 7:40 a.m. on a street near a park in a residential area, about 250 meters from Noborito Station on East Japan Railway Co.'s Nambu Line and Odakyu Electric Railway Co.'s Odakyu Odawara Line.

Officials at the school, which provides eight shuttle buses for pupils between the station and the school every morning on school days, said things went as usual until the fifth service.

"I was standing at the front of the line of children waiting for the sixth bus, and when I finished helping around six children board the bus, I heard children screaming at the end of the line," said a school official in a press conference.

The official said that was when he saw the suspect, holding "long knife-like objects in both hands," escaping on foot.

As the bus driver got off and started to chase him, the official made an emergency call to police, he said.

"The children did nothing wrong. I don't know what to do with my anger," another official told the news conference. The school will close through the end of this month.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect slowly approached the children and was shouting "I'm gonna kill you" during the rampage. He had close-cropped hair and was wearing glasses.

The police retrieved two knives at the scene and found two more in a backpack believed to belong to the suspect. Although the police have yet to formally identify him, investigative sources said they believe he is a 51-year-old resident of Kawasaki.

Of the victims, an 11-year-old girl, identified as sixth-grader Hanako Kuribayashi of Tokyo, and Satoshi Oyama, a 39-year-old Foreign Ministry official who was the father of an unharmed pupil, died in hospital from stab wounds to their necks, according to police and hospital officials.

Oyama, a Myanmar language interpreter, also sustained cuts to his back, which he might have received while trying to protect the children, the investigative sources said.

Two girls and a woman in her 40s sustained serious injuries in the attack, the police said.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government "must ensure children's safety by all means." He instructed the education minister and the chairman of the National Public Safety Commission to check on safety measures taken while elementary and junior high school students are commuting.

Caritas school officials met the press after convening an emergency meeting with pupils' parents in the afternoon.

The school operator was founded by Soeurs de la Charite de Quebec, an organization of Catholic nuns in Quebec City in Canada, according to the school's website.

Pools of blood were left at the scene, cordoned off by investigators.

"I heard a man and a woman screaming," said a 50-year-old woman who lives in the neighborhood. "I rushed out of my house and saw many ambulances."

Knives are among the most commonly used weapons in random attacks in Japan, where tight gun controls are in place.

Liverpool teenagers 'paid money to stab other youths'

More than 22,000 knife and weapon offences were recorded nationally in the past year

Teenagers are being offered up to £1,000 by gang leaders in Liverpool to stab other youngsters, the BBC has learned.

Bounties are being paid by "elders" who want to avoid carrying out the attacks themselves, young people have told the BBC Beyond Today podcast.

The claims have been linked to at least one recent stabbing.

Merseyside Police said it was aware organised crime groups used violence to settle disputes.

In a statement the force did not directly address the teenagers' claims.

But it said gangs were known to exploit "young and vulnerable people to sell... drugs and even to use violence".

The teenagers, who wish to remain anonymous because they fear reprisals, said: "Young kids are getting money put on their heads."

One boy told the BBC that his best friend was the target of a £1,000 bounty.

He said a group attacked the victim, who then needed treatment in hospital. Two teenagers then split the bounty.

He said people would go to watch "straighteners" - a fight arranged to resolve a dispute - where people were "getting stabbed".

He added that senior gang members have said: "Here's five ton [£500] each - go and do it."

"And they'll go and do it because they'll think, if I do this, then I'll get more money and I'll get more respect from the elders."
Image caption James Riley (L) makes a link with gun crime, while Alan Walsh compared the problem to the era of Roman gladiators

Last year, Merseyside Police had one of the biggest increases in recorded knife offences with a 35% rise, according to official statistics.

The force recorded 1,231 offences involving a knife in 2018.

Alan Walsh, a youth worker who runs the city-wide campaign Real Men Don't Carry Knives, said he was "still shocked" at the bounty claims.

Other gang members in Liverpool have recently confirmed to him there have been other similar cases.

"Has it got to that stage where it's like going back to gladiators," he said. "The arena is the streets and we're putting a bounty up?"

Former probation officer James Riley, who has worked in Liverpool for 18 years and teaches children about the risks of getting involved in gangs, said the bounty issue had traditionally only ever been linked to gun crime in the city.

But there had been a recent shift towards rewards for a person who uses and attacks with a knife, he added.

One of the main reasons for the bounties is so senior gang members can avoid punishments, Mr Riley said.

"The 'elders' want to distance themselves - they want to avoid arrest.

"They don't want to get their hands dirty - they know there's this continuous stream of young people out there who they can exploit."
'Still gobsmacked'

Last week, figures showed that 22,041 knife or weapon offences were recorded in England and Wales in the past year - the highest number since 2010.

One in five of those convicted or cautioned were aged between 10 and 17, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Mr Walsh, who works in Anfield, said: "I'm still gobsmacked that they have this thing where, at that tender age, they'll put a bounty on other kids' heads.

"I hope to God it's not a trend that takes off."

This episode of the Beyond Today podcast will be available from 17:00 BST on Monday

4 dead, 2 wounded in Southern California stabbings
By ROBERT JABLON

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who was “full of anger” went on a two-hour stabbing and robbery rampage in Southern California, killing four people and wounding two others, authorities said Wednesday.

The 33-year-old Garden Grove man was taken into custody after he came out of a 7-Eleven in Santa Ana, southeast of Los Angeles, and dropped a knife along with a handgun that he had taken from a guard, police said.

The violence appeared to be random and the only known motives seem to be “robbery, hate, homicide,” Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said at a news conference.

“We know this guy was full of anger and he harmed a lot of people tonight,” he said.

The suspect and all the victims were Hispanic, he added.

The attacks on more than a half-dozen places took place over about two hours in Garden Grove and neighboring Santa Ana.

The two people who were injured were listed in stable condition late Wednesday night and were expected to survive, Whitney said.

Detectives were interviewing the man and also expected to be at the various crime scenes through the night in order to collect evidence for a court case, Whitney said. Surveillance cameras caught some of the carnage.

“We have video showing him attacking these people and conducting these murders,” he said.

Whitney said the man lived in a Garden Grove apartment building where he stabbed two men during some kind of confrontation. One man died inside an apartment and another was found wounded on the balcony and died at a hospital.

Whitney said a bakery also was robbed.

The owner, who asked not to be identified, told KCAL-TV that she was charging her cellphone at about 4 p.m. when the man drove up and apparently mistook her for a customer.

“He went directly to the register and tried to open the register ... he showed me a gun,” she said. He took all the money and fled.

“I think I was very lucky because he thought I was a customer, not the owner,” she said.

The man also robbed an insurance business, where a 54-year-old employee was stabbed several times and was expected to survive.

He was armed with “some sort of machete knives” when he confronted the woman, Whitney said.

The woman “was very brave,” Whitney said. “She fought as best she could.”

An alarm company saw the robbery on a live television feed and called police.

“They could see that the female victim was on the ground with blood and multiple injuries,” Whitney said.

The man fled with cash and also robbed a check-cashing business next door, the lieutenant said.

Shortly after 6 p.m., the attacker drove up to a Chevron station, where he attacked a man pumping gas “for no reason,” Whitney said. “There was no robbery.”

The man was stabbed in the back and “his nose was nearly severed off his face,” the lieutenant said. Bystanders rushed to help the man, he said.

Undercover detectives tracked the suspect’s silver Mercedes to the parking lot of the 7-Eleven store in Santa Ana and within a minute of their arrival the man came out of the store, carrying a large knife and a gun that he had cut from the belt of a security guard after stabbing him, Whitney said.

The man had followed the guard into the store and stabbed him several times during a confrontation, Whitney said.

Police ordered the man to drop his weapons and he complied and was arrested.

Police then learned that a male employee of a nearby Subway restaurant also had been fatally stabbed during a robbery, Whitney said.

The brutal and puzzling attack came just days after a pair of mass shootings in Texas and Ohio left 31 people dead and stunned the nation. The shooter in El Paso, Texas, apparently posted an anti-immigrant screed before killing 22 people at a Walmart on Saturday. Less than a day later, a man opened fire on a Dayton, Ohio, entertainment district, killing nine people before police shot him dead.

Thank you for all the diligent efforts to keep this thread updated. There is never any outrage or discussion here because killing with edge weapons doesn't fit the narrative of controlling the populace. Killing is killing, no matter with a club, fist, knife, poison or gun.

I lived in Weaverville for 5 years back in 1980s. It is sort of local, a two hour drive. Weaverville is immediate to the south of the Trinity Alps Wilderness, my location is immediate to the north.

The comments at the link are worth a look for local flavor.

Sword Wielding Woman Sends Victim to the Hospital

On August 5, 2019 at approximately 4:34 PM, the Trinity County Dispatch Center received a 911 call, indicating that a female subject had been assaulted near the area of Weaver Street in Weaverville, CA. The suspect in the matter had reportedly utilized a sword during the altercation.

Multiple units were dispatched to the area. Once on scene, they detained a female subject identified as Rae Haines of Weaverville, CA.

After the detention of Haines, the victim in the matter was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital, where she was treated for several lacerations and later released.

During the investigation, numerous witnesses were identified, all of which indicated that Haines had struck the victim multiple times with a large sword. The sword was recovered from the scene.

During an interview with Haines, she admitted to having struck the victim multiple times with a sword. Haines also admitted to having manufactured several incendiary devices, which had been seized weeks prior and had remained part of an ongoing investigation. Haines was placed under arrest and transported to the Trinity County Jail.

Prozac maker paid millions to secure favorable verdict in mass shooting lawsuit, victims say
Andrew Wolfson | Louisville Courier Journal | 3 hours ago
In 1989, a former Standard Gravure employee killed seven people and himself at the Courier Journal's building. A look back.
Nikki Boliaux, Courier Journal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The drugmaker that produces Prozac, the antidepressant that Joseph Wesbecker’s victims blamed for his deadly shooting rampage 30 years ago at Standard Gravure, secretly paid the victims $20 million to help ensure a verdict exonerating the drug company.

Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly vigorously shielded the payment for more than two decades, defying a Louisville judge who fought to reveal it because he said it swayed the jury's verdict.

Wesbecker began taking Prozac about a month before his murderous spree that killed eight and wounded 12 in the print shop attached to the Courier Journal. All but one of the victims sued Eli Lilly, the company that manufactured the popular but controversial drug.

'We need change': El Paso mass shooting survivors file lawsuit against Walmart

On Sept. 14, 1989, Wesbecker, a pressman who had been placed on long-term disability leave for severe mental illness, entered Standard Gravure around 8:30 a.m., carrying a bag full of weapons, including a semiautomatic rifle.

Over the next 30 minutes, Wesbecker walked through the building, firing more than 40 rounds at those he encountered before shooting himself in the head with a handgun. It is the worst mass shooting in Kentucky's history.

In 1994, a fiercely litigated, 11-week trial took place in Louisville in which Wesbecker's victims and their families said the Prozac he took helped incite his murderous rampage.

On the eve of the jury's verdict, which absolved Lilly of liability, the company made the secret payment without telling the judge overseeing the case.

In exchange for the payment, the plaintiffs – eight estates and 11 survivors – agreed to withhold damaging evidence about the arthritis drug Oraflex that Lilly withdrew from the market. Lilly pleaded guilty to 25 criminal misdemeanor counts for failing to report adverse reactions that patients suffered from the drug, and the drug company feared that the Prozac jury would be more inclined to rule against the drugmaker if it learned of it.

The plaintiffs agreed that if the jury found Lilly liable, they would not seek damages, nor would they appeal the verdict if they lost.

Jefferson Circuit Judge John Potter forced the disclosure of a secret deal between Prozac maker Eli Lilly and company and the plaintiffs
Jefferson Circuit Judge John Potter forced the disclosure of a secret deal between Prozac maker Eli Lilly and company and the plaintiffs
The Courier Journal

Jefferson Circuit Judge John Potter exposed the outlines of the deal decades ago, suspecting that money may have changed hands before the verdict. He fought the company for years to disclose the deal’s terms.

Lilly closely guarded the amount of the payment, and it remained a secret in Louisville.

Two of the victims recently told the Courier Journal that the payment totaled $20 million, worth about $41 million in today’s dollars, which the plaintiffs divided among themselves after paying their attorneys. The two victims told the Courier Journal they felt compelled to accept the money because they suffered egregious injuries that kept them from working again and they needed it to survive.

They asked not to be identified because the settlement required them to keep the amount secret, and they said they feared repercussions for revealing it.

The co-lead attorney for the plaintiffs, Illinois lawyer Nancy Zettler, told the Courier Journal she was not involved in the agreement but heard the same figure cited by the two plaintiffs.

'Clearly a game.': Opioid lawsuit settlements arranged to give drug companies a tax break, experts say

The Indianapolis Star reported the $20 million amount in 2000 and said the company paid an additional $5 million to cover workers' compensation claims.

Under the deal, the plaintiffs could have received $15 million more if Prozac had been found 51%-100% liable for Wesbecker's conduct.

Attorney Ed Stopher, who defended Lilly at trial, declined to comment and referred questions to the company, whose communication director, Mark Taylor, said it would not comment.

Lilly used the verdict to tout that Prozac had been proved a safe and effective antidepressant. In 1995, the company reaped a quarter of its $6.5 billion in revenue from Prozac – and faced 160 other suits nationwide over the drug.

Prozac is still prescribed across the USA and is considered safe if used as directed, although it does have some side effects, according to the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists.

The company and its lawyers acknowledged the agreement with plaintiffs (but not the amount of the payment), insisting it was legal and ethical.

They said it was not unusual for adversaries in civil trials to strike so-called high-low agreements, in which the plaintiffs and defense agree to minimum and maximum recoveries – regardless of the verdict – to reduce their respective risks.

Somerset lawyer Richard Hay said, "If parties use secret agreements to keep out evidence, it’s like taking a dive in a boxing match."

Lilly publicly trashed Potter and his investigation and won an order from the Kentucky Court of Appeals blocking it.

Potter appealed, and the state Supreme Court unanimously ruled in his favor in 1996, allowing him to press Lilly for details of the deal.

"In this case, there was a serious lack of candor with the trial court, and there may have been deception, bad-faith conduct, abuse of the judicial process or perhaps even fraud," the court said. "We cannot tolerate even the possibility of such conduct."

Potter set a hearing at which he intended to require attorneys for both sides to testify under oath. Lilly accused him of conducting a vendetta, and he recused himself.[/b]

The judge who inherited the case let the matter drop, and Potter's questions were never answered.

Potter, 76, who retired in 2002 after 20 years on the bench, declined to comment for this story.

Prozac maker paid millions to secure favorable verdict in mass shooting lawsuit, victims say

Grizz, did you intend that article for the Spree-Killings or other mass amok shooting threads? Glad you posted it but not sure you meant to post it in this "mass" edged-weapon / blade attack thread.

Several injured in deadly ‘sword’ attack at Finnish vocational college
[France 24 ] France 24 1 October 2019

One person was killed and 10 injured in an attack at a vocational college in eastern Finland on Tuesday, police said, as local media quoted witnesses as saying a young man with a sword had burst into a classroom.

The suspected attacker, who was detained, was among the injured in the town of Kuopio, police said.

“Officers used firearms during the situation. Police have detained one perpetrator. The injured have been evacuated,” East Finland police said in a statement.

Eyewitness reports in Finnish media said the suspected assailant burst into a classroom in Savo Vocational College on Tuesday morning.

“He hit a girl in the neck with a sword and stabbed her in the stomach,” an unnamed eyewitness told Keskisuomalainen newspaper. The attacker also set off “some sort of small firebombs”, the eyewitness said.

Another eyewitness, Roosa Kokkonen, who works in a car garage opposite the college, told Finnish TV channel MTV that a teacher with blood running from her hand came fleeing out of the building.

“While I was helping the teacher, I started hearing other shouts for help. Students were running away and into my garage,” Kokkonen told MTV News.

She also told Finnish news agency STT that students described the weapon as “a long sword”, and that he “started swinging the sword around in the class”.

Police said two of the injured were in a serious condition.

In a tweet, Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne described the attack as “shocking and utterly reprehensible”.

Four police officers killed in Paris knife attack
Thursday 3 October 2019 14:10, UK

Four police officers have been killed in a knife attack at the police headquarters in Paris.

The attacker, who worked in the building, was shot dead at the scene.

It happened at about 1pm local time at the large police building, located just across from Notre Dame Cathedral.

The motive for the attack is unclear.

Police union official Loic Travers said the attack appeared to have started in an office and continued elsewhere in the large compound.

He said the employee believed to be responsible had never created any problems before.

France's interior minister and the Paris prosecutor were heading to the scene.

The Cite Metro station, near the scene of the attack, was shut down after the attack.

A man with an “edged weapon” attacked multiple people on Friday evening at San Francisco International Airport, police said.

About 6 p.m., the suspect drove to the airport, walked to the departure terminal, pulled out the weapon and assaulted three men, San Francisco police said.

Officers detained the suspect without further incident, police said.

The victims were treated for injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening, and were released at the airport.

Police did not release the suspect's identity or provide any additional details citing the ongoing investigation.
