Yes--that voice is magnificent! The range of emotions (rage, vulnerability, empathy....) she expresses is uniquely Her.

I recall reading years ago that O’Connor had a very difficult relationship with her mother and suffered her abuse.

Which is why I find her 'performance' in the video 'Nothing Compares 2 U' particularly powerful, because she said:

The close-up of me singing “Nothing Compares 2 U” was supposed to be only one part of the video. But the song reminded me of my mother, who had died three years previously … I made an emotional connection, which I was not expecting—it didn’t hit me when I was recording the song. It only kicked in when I was being filmed. So I was sitting there, thinking about me mother, and trying hard not to bawl my eyes out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB1TKw8_b1s

An essay-- w/ that quote-- written about the video nails it, imho

How 'Nothing Compares 2 U' Endured

...... She’s angry; she practically snarls at the camera and seethes as she recalls a doctor’s foolhardy advice to go out and try to have fun, but a few seconds later she’s desolate again, almond-eyed and hollow. She casts her eyes down at the ground then looks up again, half confrontational, half lost. Wearing a black turtleneck, and against a black backdrop, her head appears to be floating. When she sings, “Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling,” the passivity of the statement aches. Then, the “nothing” of the chorus is emphasized and bisected as she jumps an octave, underscoring its emptiness.

Also, Fire on Babylon from 'Universal Mother' cd was supposedly written about her mother.

She took my father from my life oh
Took my sister and brothers oh
I watched her torturing my child
Feeble I was then but now I'm grown

Fire on Babylon
Oh yes a change has come
Fire on Babylon
Fire
Fire
Fire

She's taken everything I liked
She's taken every lover oh
And all along she gave me lies
Just to make me think I loved her

Fire on Babylon
Oh yes a change has come
Look what she did to her son
Fire
Fire
Fire on

Life's backwards
Life's backwards
People turn around
The house is burned
The house is burned
The children are gone

(Wow, who compares to Sinead O'Conner in expressing such raw and conflicting emotions about one's own mother?)

Dr. Phil’ Exclusive: The Sinead O’Connor Interview
VIDEO

September 7, 2017

Dr. Phil returns for its 16th season with an exclusive interview with music star Sinéad O’Connor. In a career surrounded by accolades and cursed with controversy, the Irish singer shot to fame in 1990 when her single, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” became a worldwide #1 hit. Earlier this summer, from a New Jersey motel room, the singer posted an emotional video message online where she alluded to suicidal thoughts and discussed her battle with mental illness.

“I’m so grateful and very happy, very excited to be getting some proper help,” O’Connor tells Dr. Phil in the interview. “The fact that there’s such stigma about mental illness means that the illness doesn’t get talked about,” explains O’Connor.

The musician also described alleged abuse by her mother, “Every day of our lives, she ran a torture chamber. She was a person who would delight and smile in torturing you.”

The all-new Dr. Phil episode airs Tuesday, September 12th. Check here to see where you can watch.

Sinead O'Connor Threatens The Status Quo

Postby Cordelia » Fri Aug 24, 2018 6:09 pm

Remembering how O'Connor was vilified 26 years ago by glitterati & media for expressing her own--and many others—truth, before it was considered admirable and commendable by same groups.

She wore a white dress, no face mask and didn’t carry a club.

Do we owe Sinéad O’Connor an apology for speaking the truth about church child abuse?

Niall O'Dowd August 19, 2018 07:11 AM

Following the shocking revelations of 70 years of abuse of children by Pennsylvania priests, we owe Sinead O’Connor an apology.

Her declaration back in 1992 that the Catholic Church was rotten to its core and pedophile priests and their enablers were the real enemy was true.

It caused a massive worldwide reaction when she tore up a picture of the then Pope on Saturday Night Live in October 1992 and declared, “Fight the real enemy.”

We now know that the pedophile scandals were rampant during the era of Pope John Paul, who chose to turn a blind eye. O’Connor was calling out the right person.

Before Spotlight, before the worst of the American and Irish church scandals, O'Connor called it right and only got abuse in return.

The enemy has become very obvious since then. The revelation that a Pennsylvania grand jury found that more than 1,000 children in six dioceses there had been molested by 300 Catholic priests over the past 70 years while successive church officials covered it up is truly shocking.

Imagine if 300 imams were named as sex abusers of children. The Muslim religion would likely be banned and the imams driven out or jailed.

There is no reason to believe that Pennsylvania is an outrider and that similar scandals were not omnipresent in other dioceses.

The report is sickening. “During the course of this investigation, the Grand Jury uncovered a ring of predatory priests operating within the [Pittsburgh] Diocese who shared intelligence or information regarding victims as well as exchanging the victims amongst themselves. This ring also manufactured child pornography . . . [and] used whips, violence and sadism in raping their victims.”

According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a boy named George, “was forced to stand on a bed in a rectory, strip naked and pose as Christ on the cross for the priests. They took photos of their victim, adding them to a collection of child pornography which they produced and shared on church grounds.”

It proves that the culture of pedophilia goes very deep and covering it up was the immediate priority. Many of the men involved still serve, notably Long Island bishop John Barres (who recently, incredibly, castigated women for using birth control).

Also, involved was Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl who, ironically, is accompanying the Pope to Ireland next week and speaking on the World Meeting of Families (no gay couples allowed, but pedophile cover-up merchants welcome it seems).

We may only be scratching the surface, as the grand jury said it believed the “real number” of abused children there might be “in the thousands.”

O’Connor had the bravery to point out the reality of the pedophile scandal that would engulf the church. She tore up the pope's picture drawing massive protest down on herself.

A week later as Saturday Night Live's host, Joe Pesci, displayed the same torn photo during his monologue, saying he had taped it back together. He received huge applause.

"She's lucky it wasn't my show. Cause if it was my show, I would have given her such a smack," he added. The crowd approved that naked threat of violence.

The Catholic Church is scrambling. The church “must learn hard lessons from its past,” said Vatican spokesman Greg Burke on Thursday night. How do we know it is past? Can we believe a word from any clerical source any more?

Pope Francis, he stated, understood how “these crimes can shake the faith and spirit of believers” and he vowed that the Church would “root out this tragic horror.”

I won’t hold my breath and sorry, Sinéad, an apology is long overdue.

Facing an 18,000-person, sold-out crowd in Madison Square Garden, O'Connor put on a brave face as she was intensely jeered for her SNL appearance.

Niall O'Dowd August 22, 2018 05:11 AM

In 1992, two weeks after she tore up a picture of the Pope on “Saturday Night Live,” Sinead O’Connor appeared at Bob Dylan’s 30th-anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden.

Then aged just 25 years old, she was introduced on stage by American singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson who praised her courage and integrity.

“I’m real proud to introduce this next artist,” he said. “Her name has become synonymous with courage and integrity.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiadASyP0bU

However, the 18,000-person sold-out crowd was incredibly hostile and O’Connor was taken aback. Rolling Stone reported that “O’Connor stared back at the crowd in shock and disappointment.”

Kristofferson walked onstage to give her encouragement and the piano player started Dylan’s gospel classic “I Believe in You” again but O’Connor waved him off and refused to sing the song, taking a step toward the crowd and away from the mic.

Looking as if she was steeling herself against the booing, O’Connor returned to the mic, demanded it was turned up and launched into an a cappella rendition of Bob Marley’s “War,” the same tune she had performed on Saturday Night Live to protest child abuse in the Catholic Church.

At the song’s conclusion, she ran into Kristofferson’s arms and can be seen sobbing as she finally broke down.

In retrospect there can be nothing but admiration for O’Connor’s bold stand, coming at a time when child sex abuse by priests and cover-ups by bishops were unknown. Now she would be hailed as a heroine for blowing the whistle and for taking such a stand in front of a crowd of people turned against her.

To add insult to injury, when the CD of the concert was released, her performance had been completely erased from the evening.

Edit to add I wonder how her future mental health & career may have been different had her action generated questions rather than condemnation.

Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor has announced she has converted to Islam.

The artist, who is best known for her 1990 hit version of the song Nothing Compares 2 U, said she had changed her name to Shuhada'.

In a message on Twitter, she thanked fellow Muslims for their support.

She has said that her decision was "the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey" and uploaded a video of herself singing the adhan, or Islamic call to prayer.

On Thursday, Irish Imam Shaykh Dr Umar al-Qadri posted a video of the singer saying the Islamic declaration of faith.

Yuck. Wish she'd converted to Rastafarianism, her reggae album is killer! Sad. Don't agree with muslim faith, or any.

Considering that she's a woman w/deep religious roots and a long history of spiritual quest, this seems a natural progression for her. Maybe she'll finally find a peace she well deserves (though she'll probably face a longer wait in airports). I sure can't judge religious choices anymore...whatever works, works... Hopefully.

I just can't see it. She goes from one patriarchal religion in which she was abused to another patriarchal religion with similar tenets and a pedophile prophet.. How can this bode well?

Well, I'd like to believe there are good pockets of peeps in all religions and she'd be the one to find those peeps.

But yeah, I hear ya. Plus it gives her haters a whole new line of hate to follow.

The truth here is all worldly religions offer fallacious philosophies. I agree that Christianity, Judaism and Muslim faiths contribute to the idea of male dominance, the phallic male pyramid paradigm of top down rule. I'm more important than you, it's a dangerous sword. The priest knows more of God than you. We flex this muscle of superiority all the time, even here on this board. The Masons became a tribe of themselves with secret handshakes within their order for they "occulted" the simple math and techniques used to level and square quarried stone. She was abused by a nun I believe Sinead has stated. Poor girl. Definitely struggling to find that identity that fulfills her. Woman in burqas and hijabs?! Muslims don't exactly embrace feminism or homosexuality. Religion is a malleable thing though, I just see it as a cage for thought. I've said it before, I'll say it again, choosing a God/religion is like choosing a radio station, we all hear whatever we want to hear. I see everyone here on Earth as human first, if you choose to divide yourself out further from there you build walls between you and your fellow souls, Jew, Christian, Republican, Democrat, Palestinian, Yazidi, Zoroastrian, Rastafarian, Mormon, Quaker, might as well be Yankees vs. Red Sox, both like baseball, but only when their team wins. Picture us aloft in that proverbial gondola beneath a hot air balloon which should carry us away to peace, which of us will you cut loose to cause greater rise for you and yours? Those who build a heaven for themselves while others suffer dwell in hell as well.

Islam in Ireland: the fastest growing religion

Feb 3, 2014

By: Maggie Armstrong

Source: http://www.independent.ie/

Islam is Ireland’s fastest-growing religion, with the number of Muslims recorded in the 2011 Census – 48,130 – expected to reach 100,000 by 2020. In a country where only 34pc of approximately 3.8 million Catholics attend Mass, many people are drifting away from religion. But a small number are finding that Islamic beliefs and practices, which allow for a peaceful and community-oriented life, fit their spiritual needs.

It is estimated that up to 500 Irish people convert to Islam every year. There is no official register and no baptism – to convert you simply have to recite the testimony of creed in front of two Muslim witnesses.

While more women convert than men, and most conversions are for marriage, people can have very personal reasons for converting – or reverting as it is known in the Islamic faith, in which it is believed that everyone was born Muslim.

Ireland has a thriving Muslim community. Building begins next year on what is set to be the biggest Islamic cultural centre in the country, in Clongriffin on Dublin’s northside. There are mosques and dedicated primary schools in each of our cities. And unlike the situation in France, there is no policy against Muslim girls wearing the hijab (veil) to school.

Support for converts is offered by the Muslim Sisters of Eire, an organisation run by Irish Muslim women, and at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Clonskeagh, Dublin, where theologian Dr Ali Salem teaches a course for new Muslims.

“When people revert, they can be very enthusiastic,” says Dr Salem. “We teach a moderate understanding of Islam, and we also teach them [converts] how to change their lives gradually.”

I come from Irishtown in Dublin 4, born and bred Irish. I became interested in Islam around 12 years ago.

My lifestyle wasn’t typically Irish on the social level. I wasn’t going to nightclubs and I wasn’t into drinking. I always wondered if there was a group of people out there who had a quieter lifestyle, a faith that matched how I lived my life.

I was missing a piece of the puzzle, and I was always searching. I already fitted this religion – I just needed to find it.

Through research I kept coming across Islam. I wasn’t very outward about it at the beginning. When 9/11 happened I thought, “Right, maybe not now, but I’ll continue looking”. I took the official conversion, the Shahada, three years ago and got married last year to a Muslim from Mauritius.

My dad said, “It’s about time”, when I took the Shahada. My family bought me hijabs and my dad was like, “I’ll get you one of those Qurans.” He was very hands-on. He’s a staunch Catholic, goes to confession every month and Mass every Sunday. He’d be praying morning and night.

I’m definitely happier. Islam’s a quieter, more peaceful way of life. There’s a great sense of unity – our prayer times change day-to-day as the sun rises and sets. Everybody who’s Muslim, a quarter of the inhabitants of the world, is facing Mecca and praying at the same time. That is a very powerful and sacred feeling, putting your face to the floor and submitting to God.

The one big change is wearing the hijab. I wear it because it’s a sign of my devotion to God. It shows humility with my husband and with the male members of my family. For me my beauty is my hair and my body, and that’s not for everyone.

I also wear it because one part of my faith is to discuss Islam with non-Muslims. If I’m in the supermarket and someone hears my Ringsend accent, they’ll ask, “Oh, how long are you here, love?” And I’ll reply, “Actually, I’m Irish”. It’s a way of sharing your faith with people, of saying: “Don’t be afraid of us – we’re all human, we all come and go the one way.”

I always dressed modestly. I was never comfortable with showing the figure off. We’re living in a society where people feel threatened because I choose to not show my body, whereas you have girls as young as 11 or 12 looking at Rihanna. She has a video and she’s barely covering her nipples and wearing … I wouldn’t even call them hot pants. And there are ladies twerking and pole-dancing. Girls are looking at that and going: “Yeah, I’m going to get a husband if I do that.”

You should be valued for your soul and your personality, not because of how much flesh you show – that’s private, and that’s your beauty.

People often look at Muslim women and think we must feel oppressed. When I got married, I was given a bangle, I was given gold pendants, I was given cash and I was given land by his family.

You’re going to hear negative stuff in the media – “Oh, the poor Afghan women” and that – but I often say to people: “Please, don’t confuse culture with the faith itself.”
