How Do We Resist The New Right?

One of the reasons why Gods&Radicals exists is to give support to Pagan, Polytheist, Heathen, and Magical traditions who stand against racism, exploitation, hierarchy, and authoritarianism. In fact, specifically because we are anti-capitalist Pagans, we are often seen as ‘the enemy at the gates’ for many New Right aligned Pagans.

There are several primary antagonisms between us and the New Right, and we’re quite proud of these. What we stand for is quite often a threat to their influence, and we intend to keep it that way.

The first thing I notice about this article is the complete lack of a date, and clues towards this are absent in the text too. This sort of implies that the ideas therein exist in some sort of continuum where timeless absolutes overcome small modern day ruminations.

This is actually consistent with a religious theme, but it becomes a little strained when addressing modern day politics and especially so when it is about 'The New...' something. The missing context means that the attempts at political analysis fall flat and don't enable a developmental timeline to be properly established in the mind of the reader, one is expected to digest the offered data without a personal framework.
The buzz concerning The New Right occurred about a decade ago, but also a few alt-right figures are mentioned too, bringing it a bit more towards the present day.

Then I noticed this in the piece:

...Druidry: While groups such as the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids are fiercely egalitarian, smaller groups (including the ADF and AoDA) sometimes have overlaps with Traditionalist and Tribalist thought, particularly in ADF’s focus on Indo-European ‘hearth cultures.’ Also, the ideas of Oswald Spengler (a favorite amongst many New Right theorists) have gained popularity through some “Long Descent” druids.

Well here's a familiar piece of bullshit. the association between Spengler and the Far Right was made in one of AD's recent 'antifascistnews' pastes, something which I chose to highlight and deride. The fact that it pops up here indicates that cross fertilisation of unexamined nonsense is taking place, and possibly brings us almost right up to the present day.
There's no such thing as 'Long Descent Druids' BTW. A risible term that, as well as being fictitious, seems a hamfisted attempt to point to just one Druid, John Michael Greer.

Ever considered that the goal here might not be to shut down or meaningfully criticize the groups you like but to discipline co-opt them as proxies, patsies, "threats", honeypots, partners, testing labs, etc, etc, etc?

Not sure which groups you mean but, even though I consider these possibilities, they are at the other end of the scale to my present approach. It is being well considered by RIers in places such as the Soros thread though, so doesn't need my added input.
My own approach is looking at the antics of antifa types, who couldn't co-opt a bunny rabbit and don't want to anyway, they want to exterminate, destroy, or alternatively run away yelling 'No Platform!'

I try and keep these distinct for the time being and I think attempting a synthesis would be pretty confusing. a bit like the Mimosian antimatter chopsticks (2:55, couldn't find a shorter clip)

I can't see the Druids being co-opted by anyone, they managed (unlike Wiccans etc) to avoid being dragged into the new age soup of the 60's onwards, and would pretty much laugh at this too. It would be a foolish attempt anyway.. religion/spiriituality draws a considerably wider framework (I would say the ultimate framework) around the human experience than the monkey business of politics. I'm sure they will try and hijack some memes though, and fool some with appearances.

The Inalienable Right to Persecute

A piece on this site about the uncomfortable fact that some neo-fascists recruit through Paganism has stirred up quite some resentment.

I’ve waded through some of the back-and-forth – are Pagans inexcusably blasé towards the extreme right? Does anti-fascist zeal suppress free speech? Is truly apolitical religion impossible, or does putting the Gods first imply leaving social concerns second? Reading these arguments, I started recalling a situation from several years ago, back in college in conservative small-town Texas.

Unsurprisingly, my school hosted a profoundly Christian social milieu, including a large evangelical Protestant contingent. I was the only open trans woman there, and one of only three or so Pagans. My friend, an aspiring goði, audaciously started holding semi-public blótar on Ásatrú holidays, and a community accrued around the celebrations.

Most of us weren’t even Pagan, let alone Ásatrú. However, we all shared a feeling of alienation from the college at large: most of us were disabled people, people of color, and/or queer, not to mention unsympathetic to the hegemonic religious culture. Passing the drinking horn, we built a sense of home.

We shared campus with a sect affiliated to the New Apostolic Reformation, a theocratic Pentecostal Christian movement with a penchant for military imagery (famously documented in the film Jesus Camp). They taught that being disabled showed that God was punishing you for wrongdoing by not healing you, that LGBT identity indicated demonic possession, and that non-Christian religions represented a Satanic conspiracy. So, they chose to target us. Along with several of my friends, I found myself declared an unholy force, in public and by name, in a proclamation of “spiritual warfare.”

“Spiritual warfare,” it turned out, meant several months of organized harassment and stalking, eventually escalating to the point of death threats and (for some of my friends) physical assault. Our opposition to their divine political-religious order rendered us fair game.

Naughty Pagans! How dare they not share the obsessions of antifa types (for it seems to be these who populate 'godsandradicals').

They'd better have a good excuse if they don't.

Rainbow Heathenry: Is a Left-Wing, Multicultural Asatru Possible?

ImageFor those who raise the bowl in offering and veneration of the Old Gods, there is a glimmer of their connection to the past. Much of the Yule Celebration is based around this key concept for those who identify with Asatru, the revival of the traditional Norse pagan religion. It is the attendance to and memory of ancestors, the veneration of them just as the Gods, both of which can be traced back in a familial lineage. As Thor, Freya, and Odin are mentioned, faces around the table can envision what those names meant to their family deep in the past. The power of thunder. The perseverance in battle. The strength of conviction.

Yet it is not those elements that most of those with quick glances see when they notice a small silver Mojinir around a believer’s neck. Today Asatru is one of the most divided areas of the new pagan groundswell that is happening world wide. This is not simply because of its origins, or the warrior ethic present in its primary source materials, the Eddas and Sagas. It is the clear association between Heathenry and an openly racialist subculture, one that has taken on Norse myth and symbols as a primary form of identification. Hundreds of neo-Nazi and white nationalist bands and magazines take their names from the Northern Tradition. Some of the most militant racist prison gangs, skinheads, and open fascists venerate the same Gods of the Aesir. Across the far-right spectrum you will see the stories of Vikings and their pantheon represented as Gods of a purely white constituency, bound by blood and soil. Even amongst the more moderate view the “folkish” ideal–that says this tradition is unique only to those of Northern European ancestry–attempts to soften the blow of racial separatism.

But what is it about Asatru that creates a trajectory towards the folkish interpretation? Is Asatru today possible of having distinctly left-wing and multiracial interpretations?

Wyrd Words: A Reconstructionist Argument For Inclusive Heathenry

April 8, 2016 by Alyxander Folmer

Greetings, and welcome back to Wyrd Words. Keeping the Thor in Thursdays, every other week here on Agora!

Gods and Radicals recently posted an excellent article by Shane Burley, called “Rainbow Heathenry: Is a Left-Wing, Multicultural Asatru Possible?”

Image
“Rainbow Heathenry: Is a Left-Wing,
Multicultural Asatru Possible?”

Mr. Burley does a fantastic job of explaining some of the origins of the racialist ideologies within Asatru and if you’re in the mood for digging into history and a highly instructive bibliography I highly recommend this piece. Unfortunately, well constructed and scholarly articles like this one often seem to inspire the less luminous bulbs among our number to jump up and respond to the headline without ever actually reading the article. So when I share articles like this one on Huginn’s Heathen Hof, my Facebook page ends up flooded with comments like these:

So, the Lefites are trying to find religion for some inexplicable reason. I suspect that this is simply another way of combating the Right though and not much to do with spirituality.

The reason that it's a bit hollow is something called the enlightenment, a move away from all Gods, dogma and superstition which ended up with the creation of rational ethical systems and ways of ordering society without reference to religion at all. This has been pretty successful for the most part and they are going to have to use a great deal of creativity to undo all that. It's probably more sensible to simply carry on in the direction they've been going.

These Are The Absolute Strangest Neo-Nazi Groups In The World

Tore Tvedt, Creator Of Vigrid

Image

Oddly enough, the founder of the Neo-Nazi group Vigrid in Norway was inspired to start the organization in 1994 when he experienced some kind of religious breakthrough. The founder, Tore Tvedt, felt a warm light lift him up out of bed in the morning and a mysterious force told him to pack his bags and "follow Odin in the battle to save his chosen people from the genocide that today we are exposed to." And so, the Vigid Neo-Nazi group was born. To this day, Vigrid still has a weird mystic influence based on traditional Norse mythology, but the group interprets Norse religion in a very radical way.

Prison Ordered in Plot to Finance Race War with Robbery Proceeds

A judge ordered a 17 ½-year prison sentence this week for a Virginia man implicated in a conspiracy to rob and kill a silver and coin dealer and use the money to finance a race war.

Robert C. Doyle was one of three men described by authorities as white supremacists who plotted to bomb synagogues and African-American churches in Virginia prior to their arrests last November.

Editorial: The Witch Hunt That Wasn’t

I am, of course, a Marxist. And an Anarchist, a Feminist, a Pagan, and a Polytheist. And I did indeed suggest we challenge the traditional roles of Pagan elders and leaders. But why, precisely? Because I was seeking unearned power? Or as he and others suggested elsewhere, I am a Marxist entryist looking to sabotage already-existing groups rather than build my own?

No. Rather, it was because of stuff like the Asatru Folk Assembly’s announcement on the 21st of August:

I detest the AFA and other racial Asatrus. They've taken a perfectly good religion and made it into something that's impossible to support. Every religion spreads and gains acceptance entirely because outside people adopt it as their own.

I understand European or cultural pride. The Irish are proud to be Irish, the French are proud to be French, and so on and so on, but it's a point of pride that other people would be attracted to their culture. The point is that the culture lives on, not a specific (and mostly false) line of DNA.

DNA is not culture, and culture is not DNA.

Heathenry Belongs to All of Us

Image

Hail,

I have long said that it is not the Troth’s place to tell the AFA how to run their house. We go our own way and have our own understanding of Heathenry, what it meant to our ancestors, and what it means to us today. I have said that, and I meant it. I don’t run their house, nor would I be welcome in it.

They don’t own Heathenry, neither does the Troth. However, Heathenry is my community, its peoples, all of them, are my peoples, and they are now under attack, and it is mine to defend them. The Troth does not own Heathenry, but we are sons and daughters of the Heathen community, we are listening to the AFA tell our brothers and sisters they are not welcome , that they have no right to be here, to follow our gods, or to raise the horn with us as symble and be part of our holy folk.

I have had enough. They do not have the right, and to be honest, they are not even correct. The AFA official body has spelled out in black and white in the recent release that if you are not white, or you are gay, you are not welcome. If your understanding of how to be a good and worthy Heathen man does not fit their definition of strong masculine man, you are not welcome. If your understanding of being a good and worthy Heathen woman is not to be a skirt wearing home caring mother, you are not welcome.

They are wrong, badly wrong. On one level I weep for their failures, and their failure to understand the words of our ancestors, the teachings of our holy gods, but to be honest, my first and strongest reaction is anger. How dare they usurp the place of our holy gods, and arrogant to themselves the right to decide who may and may not raise a horn to them, who may or may not feel the call to join with their folk in community and worship. How dare they attack my folk, my people, out of a failure to understand how living true to your heart, living honestly, openly and honourably as the teaching of your ancestors and your own best judgement teaches you, do not fit their own preconceived poster of what a Heathen should look like?

Genetic diversity in Viking Age grave sites was higher than modern, the maternal mitochondrial DNA studies have shown that among those women buried with grave goods consistent with full citizenship in their community, genetic diversity showed many tribal markings, some from as far away as Turkey or North American native. You did not have to be white then, or now to be a member of our community. These women were buried as women of the folk because that is how they lived. Then and now, we judge you by your deeds, your proven worth to us. Thus it was, thus it is, and while the Troth survives, thus it will be.

I am no universalist preacher, Heathenry is not for everyone. Our ways are harsh in many respects, you are expected to answer for your words and deeds. Our gods will not wave a magic wand and fix what you break, we have to deal with the consequences of our own actions. This is a hard sell for much of humanity who really want someone to tell them that a word without a deed is somehow enough.

You can be a strong masculine man, the very image of a Viking warrior, the poster boy for any army recruiter, and be a member of our community. We have lots of them. I am one. Of course in all honesty among those proven warriors you will find many who are not white, and many who are not men. Yes, strong men and women have chosen to understand their duty to the community requires a service that risks their lives. That is a common, understanding of how to meet your challenges and responsibilities.

There are many ways to live true as a good and worthy man, and good and worthy woman. Some fill traditional gender roles to the stereotypical T. Others follow their own talents and nature, their own responsibilities and roles to become strong and worthy Heathens in many other ways. Teachers, artists, builders, traders, lawyers, healers; in every art in every science, in every trade you will find us. There is no one right way to be Heathen, we were in ancient times a whole folk, a whole community of great and vital diversity of form, of nature, of opinion and expression. This richness was the endless source of the vigor and flexibility, of the cheerful boldness that allowed us to thrive when so many other peoples failed.

Our gods are harsh; they do not hold with those who are false, who stand as oathbreakers. In that stance we see from them not cruelty, but wisdom. It does you no good to pretend what is false, it does you no good and much ill to pretend to be what you are not. You build little worth attempting to be what you are not, when instead you can build much worth succeeding in being what you are. If our gods are harsh teachers, it is that we have only one life, and the sooner we realize the importance of living true to ourselves, the greater benefit we can be to ourselves, and to our communities.

Who you love is not important. How you love is. We do not care if you are straight, gay, or trans. We do care how you love; we care deeply about how you treat the ones you love, as we care deeply about how you treat those you work with, and for, and those who work for you. How your hold your oaths, care for those who depend on you. We care about your words and your deeds. Do you honour your relationships? If so we praise you and hold you in high esteem. If not then yes, you will have little worth in our eyes.
I have married several people, and hope to continue this practice in future. I did not care then if I was marrying man and woman, or two of the same. I cared that they were openly and honestly plighting their troth to each other, that their union would be loving, honest, and healthy.

The AFA care that you are white, straight, and fit neatly on their poster.

I believe they have gone badly wrong, while I will allow them to run their own house any way they see fit, including burning the roof above their own heads, I draw the line at their telling the Heathen community who may or may not be a member.

The Troth will not tell you who may or may not join any other organization than our own. That is not our place. The Troth ABSOLUTELY will tell you that we are open to all good and worthy heathens who understand and accept that the colour of your skin, your understanding of your gender, and who it is that you love do not in any way shape or form affect your membership in this community. If you are drawn to our gods, to honour the wights and ancestors, if you find the teachings themselves to be powerful and worthy guides to your life, and you can respect those who feel the same, even if their understandings may be different than yours, then you are welcome.

Ancient Heathens built strong inclusive communities. So do we. You will find those who are white and straight in our ranks, and you will find those that are not. We honestly don’t divide along those lines. You will find so many different ways to be a good and worthy Heathen under our banner, so many good examples of men and women who are living true, not to a stereotype, but to who they need to be to face the challenges given them. Diversity is strength, and the frith of a diverse community that loves and values that diversity knows no equal on earth. That is what we seek to build. The AFA have chosen their way. It is their right, but it is not, in my opinion, a Heathen one.
