Don't be alarmed: this case does not involve Muslims. It involves a Christian murderer
"An Oklahoma woman accused of killing her daughter by forcing a crucifix down her throat told police she believed the 33-year-old woman had been possessed by the devil. KFOR-TV reports that police went to the suspect's Oklahoma City home Saturday afternoon and found Geneva Gomez dead on the ground with a crucifix placed on her chest. Officers say they found Gomez's body arranged in the shape of a cross."

Far Right Conspiracy Theorist Christopher Bollyn to Speak at the Brooklyn Commons

When asked to comment about Bollyn by other activists, the unidentified person running the Common’s twitter said, “I glanced at his site and nothing antisemitic jumped out at me.” But without even clicking on anything, the front page of Bollyn’s site is filled with lines like “9-11 is a massive Zionist Jewish crime,” and that NPR is run by a “cabal of Zionist Jews.” Bollyn’s website and other writings include such antisemitic gems like:

“Great nations, like the United States, France, and Germany, once had anti-Masonic and anti-Semitic political parties that acted to challenge the pernicious influence of secret Masonic and Jewish organizations. Today we no longer have such political parties to counter these secret networks and find ourselves ruled by B’nai B’rith and Jewish Freemasons.”

“The ‘false flag’ terrorism of 9–11 is a monstrous Jewish-Zionist crime of our time. The true culprits of this heinous crime are clearly being protected by a gang of like-minded Jewish Zionists in the highest positions of the U.S. government.”

“It seems like being a Jew is a lot like being a wolf.”

He openly cites the Protocols line that: “Not a single announcement will reach the public without our control.”

“I suspect that Arlen Specter is a high-level agent of the B’nai B’rith, the secret organization of Jewish Freemasons which I consider to be the real Elders of Zion.”

Jezebel on anti-Semitism at Brooklyn Commons

More details on Bollyn's gig at the Brooklyn Commons from Jezebel, which had a reporter there... It also notes dishonest damage-control measures taken by the Commons in response to the controversy...

Bollyn, who has appeared on David Duke’s radio show, calls the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, "a monstrous Jewish-Zionist crime," the architects of which are "protected by a gang of like-minded Jewish Zionists in the highest positions of the U.S. government." At one point, he touted his credentials as a contributor to the American Free Press, an anti-Semitic conspiracy rag, and, as progressive Jewish blogger Daniel Sieradski points out, the description of Wednesday’s event on the Commons’ website originally read, "9/11 and the War on Terror are dual deceptions imposed on our nation by the Israeli/Zionist and Neo-Conservative cabal that controls our government and media," before the more explicitly anti-Semitic language was removed.

(Incidentally, the Anti-Defamation League notes that the American Free Pressfired Bollyn in 2006 for filing false stories, which is really saying something for a publication that recently ran the headline, "70,000 Whites Murdered in ‘Modern’ South Africa; Obama’s African Legacy.")

Polish man attacked and beaten by gang of up to 20 teenagers in Leeds

West Yorkshire police say they are treating incident that seriously injured 28-year-old man as racially aggravated

A Polish man has been attacked and beaten by a group of up to 20 teenagers in a suspected racially aggravated assault, police said.

The 28-year-old man was seriously injured when he was kicked and punched by a group of male youths aged 16 to 18 in Alliance Street, Armley, Leeds, at around 9.35pm on Friday.

Officers said he had been confronted and assaulted in Town Street before being pursued and then attacked.

The man received a cut to his head that required stitches and hospital treatment, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

West Yorkshire police said they are treating the incident as racially aggravated owing to comments made to the victim and his friend, and are appealing for information.

Offering reassurance, Chief Superintendent Paul Money said they would “not tolerate hate incidents of this nature” and would do everything to those responsible are brought to justice.

“Armley is an area with a strong sense of community across a population from a range of ethnicities and nationalities, and I know that people living there will be as shocked and appalled as we are at this incident,” Money said.

“I appreciate this attack will have understandably caused heightened concerns among eastern European communities, but we are treating it as an isolated incident and not as an indicator of any ongoing hate issue in the area.

“Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team increased their patrols in the area in response to this incident and will be maintaining and increased presence to reassure people.”

The Polish embassy has since tweeted a statement saying it was “saddened by another assault on a Polish national in the UK”, adding that the victim has since been discharged from hospital.

“The assault in Leeds has been the most serious of over 10 xenophobic incidents experienced by Poles in the north of England that the consulate general in Manchester dealt with in recent months,” added the embassy.

“The consular section of the Polish embassy in London offered assistance in further 17 cases in the south and the Midlands.”

Lukasz Lutostanski, Polish consul general in Manchester, has written to local authorities and said he is grateful for the response from the police and the promise to send additional patrols to the area around the crime scene.

“We will work together on solutions that will permanently increase the safety of the Polish nationals,” he added.

The attack in Leeds occurred on the same day that Theresa May expressed her deep regret over the attacks on Polish citizens in a phone call to her counterpart.

She told Beata Szydło that “hate crime has no place in UK society”.

Poles have been victims in a series of incidents since the UK voted to leave the European Union in June – including the killing of Arkadiusz Jozwik in Harlow, Essex, in August, and the assault of two Polish men within hours of a vigil following his death.

Muslim woman set on fire in New York City

"A Muslim woman had her blouse set on fire outside an upscale boutique in Manhattan, police sources told The New York Daily News. The 36-year-old woman was wearing traditional Muslim attire and was able to douse the flames herself, in what appears to be the latest anti-Muslim attack in New York City."

CONTROLLED DEMOLITION

Jew-Hater Christopher Bollyn Brings 9/11 False Flag Act to the Brooklyn Commons

A space that once dedicated itself to aiding the progressive community takes a very dark turn.

JACOB SIEGEL

“I’ve seen buildings collapse before,” was the first thing I heard as I took my seat. “I know what a controlled demolition looks like.”

That was Mike—who looked to be in his late sixties and wore a black panama hat over his mustache and hepcat sideburns and a guayabera shirt over his paunch—casually asserting his knowledge about buildings in freefall in a familiar but outdated New York accent to a Swede who nodded intently. We were in Brooklyn, the most Jewish borough in America’s most Jewish city, along with about two dozen other people, some of them Jewish and many habitués of the city’s left wing political scenes along with myself and what looked to be at least four other people scribbling in reporters’ notebooks, to hear an anti-Semite run down the Zionist conspiracy behind the Sept. 11 attacks.

Controversy had been building in New York’s Jewish and left wing circles and most vocally in the space where those circles overlap over the decision to invite Christopher Bollyn to expound on his belief that “9/11 is a massive Zionist Jewish crime,” as he’s written. Once a member of far-right organizations like the Liberty Lobby tied to Holocaust denial and white nationalism, Bollyn’s role inside the self-proclaimed 9/11 truth movement has given him some inroads to the left. Those roads led him this week to The Brooklyn Commons, an organizing space and event venue once associated with some of the leading lights of left-wing politics.

Posters at the Commons promised “a riveting analysis of who masterminded the false flag terrorist act known as 9/11,” from “a rare voice exposing the Neocons and their Zionist partners-in-crime.” Which seemed an unlikely pitch for a non-profit operation that had described itself as providing “resources to the progressive community.”

But under pressure from groups that have used the Commons including Jacobin, The Baffler and WBAI to cancel the event its owner, Melissa Ennen, instead posted a statement at once denying any knowledge of Bollyn’s background, insisting racism has no place in left-wing politics and invoking an anti-safe space free speech ethos as grounds for allowing him to speak. After issuing her statement, the Commons’ “about” page, which had called it a resource for progressives—was removed from its website.

Notably, Ennen didn’t mention her own longstanding ties to the 9/11 truth movement, which might have explained her intransigence and also cast doubt on her claim that she “did not research the speaker before accepting the rental.” Those details came out only when they were reported by Daniel Sieradski, the publisher of Jewschool, a site with the banner “progressive Jews and views.”

Eugene, 32, a Ukrainian-born Brooklynite wearing an Industrial Workers of the World shirt, showed up Wednesday night to protest Bollyn’s talk. He had this to say about the Ennen’s decision to host it: “For an event with a Holocaust denier talking to five people she decided to sabotage her progressive space and she decided to sabotage her reputation.”

Several left-wing organizations tied to the venue repudiated the booking, with some eventually cutting ties with the Commons because of it.
When the event started at 7, there were close to two dozen protesters outside. This group was younger, more traditional in their radical politics, and, judging from my conversations and observations, more likely to identify as Jewish than the attendees walking past them. The protesters, too, were mostly fixtures of New York’s left-wing politics and in some cases of the same small circles as their antagonists at the talk.

Here was some sampling of the left fighting with itself over the meaning and borders of its politics. Thus the multiple protesters carrying signs with variations on the slogan, “yet another Jewish anti-Zionist against anti-Semitism.”

One such sign was held by Rosa, an “almost 40” cultural worker living in New York and active in anti-Zionist politics aimed at Jewish audiences.

“Free speech is the principle that the government should not ban people from talking,” Rosa said in response to Ennen’s defense of booking Bollyn. “There is no obligation for anyone to provide a platform for bigotry, Holocaust denial, anti-Semitism etc. Even as a bad excuse it doesn’t register on the scale.”

Also protesting was Mal, a New Yorker who did not give her age but appeared to be in her late twenties and said she was involved in left-wing anti-authoritarian and LGBT politics.

Anti-Zionism is not a form of anti-Semitism, Mal argued, but “it is used as a cover for anti-Semitism and we do need to be vigilant but the thing is we’re seeing it in more parts of the left.” Where else had she seen it? “Occupy circles.”

She elaborated: “I’m talking about casual use of anti-Semitic tropes and anti-Semitic propaganda like the concept of Rothschild Zionism being what’s undergirding the economic oppression of the working class.

Short: Anti-Semitism on the Left with Spencer Sunshine

On this short, Sam returns to the studio and we reflect on some recent incidents of anti-Semitism on the left in Canada. We then speak with Spencer Sunshine, an anti-fascist activist and researcher, about Christopher Bollyn, an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist and holocaust denier who recently gave a talk at a leftist space in New York City. Spencer was part of a protest held outside the event, and explains the context surrounding it.

The return of pogroms to Ukraine

The village of Loshchynivka in the Odesa region, Ukraine, is up in arms over the rape and murder of 9-year-old girl by suspected Roma man.

As reported by The Times of Israel, pogroms have returned to Ukraine, but this time the violence is not directed at the Jews.

At the end of August, about 10 Roma families numbering approximately 80 people were forced to flee from the village of Loshchynivka in an incident described in the Ukrainian media as a “Gypsy pogrom”.

An amateur video captured the August 27 incident in which a crowd of men threw rocks at windows and broke doors, as police watched but did nothing. The next day, about eight homes were destroyed — the walls knocked down with tractors, one home burned, another was left without a roof. Inside, television screens were smashed, mattresses ripped, a kitchen stove was thrown on its side.

“We got a phone call, they said, ‘Leave now or we will kill you.’ We didn’t have time to take our things or our documents. We just grabbed the children and ran,” Nikolay Churali, a Roma man who fled from his home with his wife, two children, his elderly mother and 10 relatives, was quoted as saying. “We were outside. We cried. The mosquitoes bit us. A half hour later, they started to break down the houses. I can’t describe it with words.”

When asked to compare Roma pogroms in today’s Ukraine to the Jewish pogroms that took place here 100 years ago, a 39-year old Loshchynivka resident who participated in the pogrom, said that the pogroms against Jews and Roma “have a lot of similarities,” because “the problems were the same.”

Some in the Jewish community also saw the similarities, although for different reasons.

The curator of the Moldova’s Jewish Heritage Museum, Irina Shihova, said it’s horrible that pogroms have “not changed over centuries.”

“The mechanism of the blood libel [including the willingness to invent a crime], the willingness to transfer the guilt from one criminal to an entire community, and the readiness to take the law into one’s own hands and to start a pogrom — as well as the xenophobia, the fear of the outsider — these things are the same,” Shihova wrote on Facebook.

Boleslav Kapulkin, the spokesman for Chabad Lubavitch in Odessa, however, says there is no connection between the Roma pogrom and anti-Semitic violence.

“No one [in the Ukrainian press] made any connection to Jewish pogroms,” he said, adding that he is not worried about the safety of the Jewish community.

“We have to live. We can’t begin to tremble from every little sound,” he said.

Meanwhile, the village is now patrolled by 10 men from the Azov Regiment, a right-wing civilian militia with the mission of “fighting the internal enemies of Ukraine.” Regiment member Mihail Zvonik, 19, said that Azov volunteers came to the village to ensure the safety of residents after they allegedly received telephone threats from the Roma.

“If the government tries to punish those who participated in the pogrom, that will evoke further unrest because the people will protest against it,” he said.

In a separate report, Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster, quoted the director of the International Renaissance Foundation’s Roma Program Initiative, Olga Zhmurko, as saying: “This is a flagrant violation of human rights. The very essence of the will of the people who gathered at a spontaneous rally and decided to evict Roma is against the law. It discriminates against people based on ethnicity”.

Izmayil district chair Valentyna Stoykova acknowledged that the eviction decision made by the Loschynivka village council lacks legal force. She also said, in contrast to other reports, that the evicted Roma had decided for themselves to leave the village, making the eviction to other regional villages a compromise.

According to DW, it remains unclear how many people were actually affected by the eviction. The itinerant living patterns of many Roma is one reason for the uncertainty. Another is that there are some residential addresses where dozens of people have been registered, who may have actually never have lived there.

“These people live for the moment with their relatives. Other housing is not provided for them and there is no attempt to provide it,” Volodymyr Kondur, head of Human Rights Romani Center told DW. The Roma are planning to sue for damages resulting from the riots and illegal entry into their homes, he said. Moreover, he underlined that “what happened in Loschynivka is not a single case in Ukraine. Unfortunately, the representatives of the Roma community are discriminated against pretty often. If a crime is committed in a village where there are Roma, they are the first to be suspected and accused.”

How Islamophobia Impacts Women of Color In Europe

March 11, 2016
by Yasmin Begum

Anti-Muslim violence is rising across the world at an alarming rate. Following the violent attacks in Paris, the firebombing in Germany, and the high population of Muslims who are victims of the refugee crisis, Islamophobia in Europe is reaching extreme levels.

In the United Kingdom, where I live, anti-Muslim hate crimes have risen by 300% over just the past couple of months. Before recently, much of the Islamic experience in Europe was limited to discrimination and socio-economic poverty. But the recent turn to increased violence has been a long time coming. Tensions between Europe’s racism and Islamophobia are based on deep-rooted issues of colonialism and cultural purity. Europe is known for its xenophobia— its dislike and fear of people from other countries.

As a Muslim woman of mixed Pakistani and Welsh descent who lives in the U.K., my identity has always been broadly read as “Middle Eastern.” Even though I didn’t understand the meaning of the towers falling as a seven-year old child, I’ve always known that I grew up in a climate of Islamophobia and racism.

As a teenager, I was the victim of a hate crime, which resulted in taking out a restraining order. This wasn’t an unusual experience for my peer group and the communities I grew up in. In fact, I knew many people who had similar experiences.

Troublingly, I have noticed that the most invisible form of Islamophobia is the rising violence against women. The vast majority of victims of Islamophobia are Muslim girls or women dressed in Islamic clothing. And the number of attacks on Muslim women are only based on instances that have been reported. Undoubtedly many more have taken place.

I have been on the receiving end of gendered Islamophobia for my entire life. And recently, it feels like it has gotten worse. Just a few weeks ago, someone called me a terrorist while traveling on the train in London, the day after the U.K. voted to bomb Syria.

Now as an adult, I am just beginning to understand how Islamophobia, along with sexism, has shaped my life and the lives of others.

Various black feminist thinkers such as Angela Davis and Claudia Jones have talked about how oppression intersects at gender, class, race and sexuality. For example, we know that racism is gendered and sexuality is highly racialised.

Muslim women of color have the combined oppressions of being women, people of color and of having a marginalized faith. Because a lot of Muslims in Europe are of African descent, the racism they experience is specifically anti-blackness.

As if Muslim women were not already visible and vulnerable against a backdrop of majority white, Christian citizens, policies have been enacted that further isolate Muslim women. Wearing the burqa, niqab or the hijab can be very isolating in European countries such as France, where the veil was banned in schools. French monitoring and anti-racist organisations have reported a sharp spike in hate crimes following the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

The violence taking place against Muslim women of color goes beyond being attacked or slurred at in the street. Islamophobia against women of color is also taking place on a large scale, state level.

Throughout Europe, Muslim prison populations are growing. The number of women in prison in Europe is “increasing rapidly”, 70% of France’s prison population is Muslim, despite Muslims only making up 10% of the country’s population. It’s a similar case in other countries like the U.K., where the Muslim prison population has nearly doubled over 12 years. Additionally, Black people are four and a half times overrepresented in prison in the U.K., a rate even higher than the incarceration of Black people in the U.S.

As violence against Muslim women of color increases in Europe and abroad, we need to pay attention to how policies and incarceration are being built specifically upon racism and Islamophobia. While Islamophobia grows in Europe, its countries are imprisoning Black and Muslim prisoners at an alarming rate. Meanwhile, the “War On Terror” still targets Muslim women abroad. While we are being locked up in our home countries, the military is trying to destroy our communities in other countries, too.

It’s important that we follow the lead of those who are most affected by Islamophobia and racism. In the U.K., the hotline called Tell Mama was set up especially to report and monitor Islamophobic hate crimes. Many Muslim women are already resisting Islamophobia, such as Arzu Merali who helped to found the Islamic Human Rights Commission, a research and monitoring body on Islam and Islamophobia. While these projects are resisting Islamophobia against women of color, they are not enough; we must all continue to fight together until we end sexist and racist Islamophobia.

The Jordanian Minister who had shot his sister because she married a Muslim: Christian "honor crimes" don't get Western media coverage

Still waiting to see if any Western media, which usually are super sensitive to the plight of women--only overseas and only if repressed by Muslim men--will cover the story of the Jordanian Minister, Malik Haddad. As you know, Jordanian King appointed Malik Haddad (a wealthy businessman with ties to the prime minister and the ruling elite) as Minister of Transportation in the new cabinet this week. A Jordanian reporter posted on Facebook reminding readers that Haddad had in fact killed his sister three decades ago for marrying a Muslim man. He only served five years in jail and was paroled by King Husayn (your friend). The reporter who posted reminding people about Haddad, was I am told pressured by the palace and had to delete his post. But it was too late, and the Minister resigned. If this was a Muslim Minister who killed his sister for marrying a Christian, it would have been made into a movie of the week, and the New York Times magazine would have led with a cove story.

British Hospitality

Daniel Trilling 19 October 2016

An estimated 387 child refugees who have relatives in the UK are stranded alone in Calais. The UK government doesn’t really want to bring them over, and has only started to after being sued by a group of charities. Three teenagers who arrived this week have been accused of looking like young men rather than children. The way the right-wing press has singled out these boys and published their faces in a hit parade is straight-up racist intimidation, playing on a stereotype of non-white foreigners being freakishly and threateningly overdeveloped.

People like the Conservative MP (not the Brexit secretary) David Davies– ‘These don’t look like “children” to me. I hope British hospitality is not being abused’; ‘Migrant “children” must be given dental X-rays to prove age’; ‘didn’t see any children in the camp’ – claim that they’re interested only in ensuring that genuine children get the protection they need. Somehow I doubt it. Davies’s ‘concerns’ are part of a general narrowing down of the category of ‘deserving’ refugees, with the aim of taking in as few as possible. The terms are shifting constantly; when you answer one objection, another appears. OK, there’s a refugee crisis but the real refugees are the ones who stay in camps outside Europe. OK, there’s a crisis in Europe but the real refugees are the ones who stay in the first European country they set foot in. OK, there’s a problem in Calais but we only need to protect the lone children. OK, but not the teenagers. And so on.

Davies’s invoking of British ‘hospitality’ is also questionable. One might ask what kind of hospitality it is to leave thousands of Afghans, whose country Britain recently occupied for 13 years, and many of whom have relatives in the UK, living in the mud in Calais. One might also question the wider theme of ‘Britain’s proud history of welcoming refugees’, as it is often called. The UK has indeed taken in certain selected groups of refugees at certain points in its history, and this has made a real difference to the lives of the people who came here. But it might be more accurate to say that Britain has a history of mainly trying to keep refugees out, while occasionally welcoming limited numbers. People tend to forget that the British government, which kept its doors closed to most Jewish refugees from Europe in the 1930s, was pressured into the Kindertransport by Jewish and Quaker organisations – and even then, it only took the children and left their parents to die. The ‘proud history’, as often as not, is used to justify keeping refugees out.

Unaccompanied children are often in greatest need of protection and should be given priority, but helping them is not enough. Most of the migrants are adults. It’s the restrictions on their movement that create the situations in which children get trapped. And while a rhetorical focus on children may seem an easy way to skip the difficult political questions and appeal straight to people’s emotions, it may not be the best way to help refugees in the long run.

The migrants in Calais and elsewhere are not so much ‘innocents’ as people trying to retain control over their lives and making morally complex decisions about what risks to take, what rules to flout, what lies to tell – including, in a minority of cases, saying you’re under 18 when you’re not. If these details are kept out of the picture then it makes it harder to ask the questions that need to be asked. Why should anyone, for example, from small children to adult women and men, have to put up with these conditions? What set of interests does it serve to regulate their movement and encourage people to fear them? And how likely is it that a state which treats refugees in this way will behave similarly to its own citizens?

Zero Work is the Tendency, Negative Money is the Tool: To rescue Europe from the abyss of racist war we must design Europe 2.0

Image

The systematic rejection of migrants at the borders of Europe is not a mere manifestation of brutality, it is symptomatic for the transformation of the Union into a racist fortress: a wave of nationalism and hatred is mounting among the European population.

The Archipelago of Infamy is spreading all around the Mediterranean Sea.

Europeans are building concentration camps on their own territory, and pay their Gauleiters in Turkey, Libya and Egypt to do the dirty job on the Mediterranean shores, where salty sea water has replaced Zyklon B. This is laying the foundation for a racist civil war in the entire Euro-mediterranean area, unless we stop this barbarity.

Colonialism & Its Discontents
Image

Image

“no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark…”

According to the United Nations, there are currently more displaced people on the planet than at any other time in recorded history. Nearly sixty million people have fled or have been driven from their homes on account of war, violence, political destabilization, or severe economic conditions, compared to around 38 million a decade ago. 1 out of every 122 humans on this planet is currently a refugee, and 9 out of 10 of them are in regions considered to be underdeveloped by international standards. While the Syrian war is currently the largest contributor to such displacement, displaced people hail from every corner of the world, from Haiti to Pakistan to Senegal to Colombia.

More than half of the world’s sixty million refugees are children.

“you only run for the border when
you see the whole city running as well…”

Refugees flooded into Europe in record numbers last year, comprising the largest influx of migrants from outside the European continent in modern times. While the majority of refugees fled from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, they came from every corner of the world; from Haiti, Mali, Senegal, Eritrea, Pakistan. The vast majority of them landed on Greek shores, but they also flooded into Hungary, Italy, and Turkey, desperately hoping to eventually reach Northern Europe.

They are fleeing civil wars, sectarian conflicts, and widespread poverty caused by both natural disasters and social forces. They are leaving their homes, their ancestral villages, and their families, with many never to return, risking their lives in an attempt to reached a promised land of safety that in reality is often quite harsh and unwelcoming. While the conflicts and tragedies that drive them from their homelands are varied in both complication and scope, nearly all are bound by the common roots of imperialism and colonialism.
