Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz and Dan Patrick’s Obsession with George Soros is Weird and Kind of Dangerous

Texas politicians share their Soros obsession with some of the country’s most cartoonish lunatics, like Alex Jones.

Image
Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Ted Cruz

A spectre is haunting Texas — the spectre of Soros. Let’s talk for a minute about how to use political rhetoric responsibly, shall we? For most of the last decade it’s been a cinch for Texas Republicans to rile up their base, because around every corner lurked the shadow of Barry Obama, poised to take your guns, teach your kids how to hit a bong and force cowboys to kiss each other. Every fundraising email and speech warned of this dark menace. And then, one day, he was gone.

Texas Republicans could either end the fear-mongering or find a new boogeyman, and you can guess which option they chose. The new enemy of our Lone Star volk is an 86-year-old Hungarian-American billionaire named George Soros, who has inherited Obama’s so-far failing plot to make Texas a gayer, more gunless state. (California.)

Conservatives have long hated Soros. But lately there’s been an absolute deluge. You may not be aware of this, because Texas Republicans have confined most of their whinging to the backchannels where they communicate with the most diehard members of their base. If you receive the emails that Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick and Ted Cruz send to their fans, your email inbox is now awash in his name.

Cruz tells his supporters that the son of the “notorious” Soros has given a few thousand dollars to his opponent, fearfully offering that “the partnership between Beto O’Rourke and the billionaire Soros family won’t be easy to overcome,” and adding in another email that the Soros family had gone “ALL IN” on knocking off Ted. Patrick feels he’s the bigger target, emphasizing that he’s been made “Public Enemy #1” by the Soros Machine, who is “putting a big spotlight on my race for re-election” and “will invest millions in Texas to try to defeat me.” In February, the Harris County Republican Party took a page from tinpot dictators around the world and told its faithful that angry protesters at Republican town halls were being paid by Soros.

But the biggest Soros-baiter of all is Abbott. He’s sent dozens of emails to supporters mentioning Soros in passing or emphasizing his danger. The messages started out pretty banal: Soros is orchestrating the effort to “attack Texas” and “defeat Governor Abbott.” Then they got shriller and weirder. One fundraising email subject line reads, “Obama to void 2016 results?” Obama’s plot, we learn inside, is funded by Soros. Another: “Gun ban in Texas?” Guess who’s coming to steal your guns: “Liberal billionaire George Soros has poured millions of dollars into trying to eliminate your Second Amendment rights,” the email reads. “COME AND TAKE IT!”

Image
Greg Abbott fundraising email regarding George Soros

On July 29, Abbott doubled down in an unusual op-ed for the Washington Examiner: “How George Soros is helping Obama Democrats buy their way back to power.” Soros was the force behind modest Dem gains in the state in 2016, Abbott said, and now the governor and Texas values are in the crosshairs. “The Soros network has their sights set on re-drawing congressional districts in the Lone Star State to push their progressive agenda and turn the Texas dream into a California nightmare,” the governor wrote.

All of this barely raises an eyebrow from political observers. Yet these serious politicians share their Soros obsession with some of the country’s most cartoonish lunatics. Alex Jones recently told a jury at his child custody trial that Soros was behind a plot to make weed stronger as a population-control device. Alt-righter Augustus Sol Invictus (that’s Latin for Majestic Unconquered Sun, mind you) led a rally in Austin with a chant of “Death to Soros.” Meanwhile, one of the president’s top allies, Roger Stone, is telling everyone he can that Soros is personally orchestrating a burgeoning deep-state coup to dethrone the president.

Image
Ted Cruz email to supporters

Abbott and friends don’t actually fear Soros, of course. They’re capitalizing on a pre-existing hatred of the man. Soros is certainly an influential figure on the world stage, and he donates money to many liberal causes. But his expenditures in Texas are insignificant compared to the ocean of money that’s come from other billionaires and millionaires over the years — the Wilks brothers, the late Bob Perry, Jeff Sandefer, Tim Dunn and others — and they exercise a far greater influence over policy and politics.

No other liberal donors have achieved the same level of hatred, either. Tom Steyer spent $87 million during the presidential election and hardly anyone knows his name. Let’s set aside any consideration of whether Soros’ influence is bad or good. There’s clearly something about the man that engenders an unusually deep level of hatred and fear, something that grants the symbol of Soros special power and has been burned into people’s brains in a way that enables Abbott to build a fundraising strategy around it.

Let’s speak plainly: A very substantial part of Soros’ power as a scapegoat is that he’s a Jew. He’s the embodiment of some of the oldest anti-Semitic tropes there are, concepts that run deep in our cultural subconscious. Critics of Soros across the globe emphasize his status as a man without borders who manipulates the world through finance and foments social and moral decay wherever he goes, a secret power perpetuating the world’s ills through shadowy influence games. The epithet of choice for people concerned about that kind of thing used to be “Rothschild.” Now it’s “Soros.”

For a fun game, look through conservative media and count the times that Soros’ face is depicted from below, emphasizing his nose, or how often he’s compared to a puppetmaster, most famously by Glenn Beck, or an octopus, whose tentacles extend around the globe. Those are timeless anti-Semitic clichés. There’s also the bizarre and long-running right-wing fascination with the idea that Soros, who was a preteen in Hungary during the Holocaust, was somehow a Nazi collaborator, a traitor to his people.

Image
George Soros

All this becomes even more clear when you look at the places in the world where Soros hate is strongest. In Malaysia, the former prime minister once accused Soros of being part of an international Jewish cabal that orchestrated the 1997 Asian financial crisis. In Hungary, a proto-fascist political coalition led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is fighting to shut down an entire university whose endowment was provided by Soros, labeling it an importer of liberal degeneracy — while using the same puppetmaster iconography Glenn Beck did. Over the last year, anti-Soros talking points used by Putin and Orbán’s governments have increasingly been regurgitated word for word by Republicans in Congress.

The important thing about these tropes is that you don’t need to be cognizant of them to perpetuate them, and the people who write Abbott’s emails probably aren’t. They’re centuries old. But that’s what gives them their power. Liberal hatred of the Koch brothers works similarly — it’s composed of fear of their real influence, multiplied by the way they fit neatly into another trope, that of the cruel and unfeeling top-hat-and-monocle-wearing businessman, Mr. Potter with billions.

The difference is that the Koch trope isn’t really bigotry, whereas the Soros one is dark magic. Historically, when you play with it, you’re playing with fire. The American obsession with Soros as a hidden power originates in unsettling and weird places, like Alex Jones’ show. But it enters mainstream discourse through repetition by leaders like Abbott.

In the aftermath of Trump’s election, which normalized so much that is dark in American life, you might hope elected Republicans would be more careful about their rhetoric. Then again, Abbott is the fellow who set off the Jade Helm fiasco. A test of character, it’s said, is what you do when no one’s looking. And a good test of political character is what you say to the people who always believe you. What Abbott and friends are telling their most diehard supporters is creepy, weird and just a little bit dangerous.

But more than that, it speaks to a poverty of the imagination. When we see foreign strongmen like Hungary’s Orbán lean so heavily on threats posed by a foreign menace, we tend to suspect that they’re doing so because their own agenda has so little to offer that it can’t live or die on its own merits. Fortunately we live in Texas, where our leader has a bold plan for our future: whatever Dan Patrick wants, plus a mysterious and abiding hatred of trees.

A far-right conspiracy theory made it to Christine Blasey Ford’s hearing

Ford's lawyers said Thursday that they paid for her polygraph and that they are working pro bono.

REPUBLICANS USED A FAR-RIGHT CONSPIRACY TYING CHRISTINE BLASEY FORD TO GEORGE SOROS TO TRY AND UNDERMINE HER TESTIMONY THURSDAY.

Republican senators indirectly parroted a far-right conspiracy claiming liberal megadonor George Soros paid for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s polygraph test Thursday, even after Ford’s lawyers said during the hearing they themselves had paid for the test.

Ford was testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee to answer questions about her allegation of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Ford claims Kavanaugh attempted to rape her at a house party in 1982, when the two were teenagers. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation.

Pressed by prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, who was questioning Ford for GOP senators on the Judiciary Committee, about who paid for a polygraph test Ford took, one of her lawyers, Deborah Katz, took the mic.

“Let me put an end to this mystery,” Katz said. “Her lawyers paid for this polygraph.”

Her other attorney, Michael Bromwich, took the mic and added, “As is routine.” Katz took the mic back and repeated, “As is routine.”

Katz and Bromwich are also working pro bono, they said during the hearing.

“We are not being paid,” Bromwich said. “And we have no expectations of being paid.”

The line of questioning stems from a thoroughly debunked far-right conspiracy that Ford has ties to Soros, a favorite target of the far right. Earlier this week, a photo of a woman standing with Soros was shared on Twitter, with one user saying it was Ford.

But, as The New York Times noted, the woman is actually Lyudmyla Kozlovska, a Ukranian human rights activist.

The photo had been shared more than 30,000 times as of Tuesday, according to the outlet.

Well, who else could afford to pay for a polygraph test? The only other possibility is the mirror universe Evil Kavanaugh clone.

Donald Trump Channels Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theory to Explain Kavanaugh Opposition

On the surface, Soros conspiracy theories serve as a tried-and-true conservative answer to explain away any political happening that poses a threat to their power. But beneath that veneer, Soros conspiracy theories trace back to longstanding anti-Semitic tropes, such as the fabricated “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” that have filtered into the mainstream conservative discourse. Over the years, Soros’ name has often been invoked as a dog whistle to grander conspiracy theories about a supposed Jewish plot to subvert the world’s interests and crumble otherwise civil societies in the name of world domination. For example, on The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi blog operated by Andrew Anglin, Soros is frequently identified at the center of hardcore anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

GOP Ad Channels Anti-Semitism to Portray George Soros as Puppetmaster

There’s George Soros, big stacks of cash, Colin Kaepernick, antifa, MS-13, and a Democratic candidate. The Republican Party approved this message.

Image

Following an ancient anti-Semitic script, a Republican attack ad portrays a Jewish financier as the puppetmaster behind non-white social unrest.

The ad, literally titled “Owns,” ties Minnesota congressional aspirant Dan Feehan, a Democrat, to George Soros, the currency speculator turned philanthropist whose demonization has become central to authoritarian nationalist projects in Hungary, Russia and beyond.

In “Owns,” funded by the National Republican Campaign Committee, Soros is an Oz-like figure hovering over stacks of cash.

As I've probably said a dozen times here, these stories function to inocculate the actual money machine from scrutiny. The right-wing jumps to entirely false caricatures of truths the "center" party won't touch. So you won't see a factually accurate version of that ad with the Kochs funding climate denial and voter suppression. Let alone one about billionaires in general.

But the 30-second format is the real inocculation, against the possibility of any discourse other than reactionary, personalized anger.

Pat Robertson: The Justice Department Must Investigate George Soros for Orchestrating the Migrant Caravan

By Kyle Mantyla | October 22, 2018 2:09 pm

On “The 700 Club” today, televangelist Pat Robertson urged President Trump to launch an investigation into George Soros for supposedly funding the caravan of migrants that is heading toward the United States.

For the last week, thousands of Central American migrants have been traveling north in hopes of entering the United States, and Robertson is accusing Soros of orchestrating and financing the entire thing as a public relations stunt aimed at embarrassing Trump just before the midterm elections, despite admitting that he has no evidence to support this assertion.

Robertson urged Trump to station thousands of American soldiers along the southern border to stop the caravan from entering the United States and to place the migrants in large camps where they will be provided for until they can be arrested, processed, and deported.

“It’s going to be a public relations nightmare for our president if he doesn’t get ahead of this thing,” Robertson said. “The person who has apparently been financing this thing is George Soros. Now, we don’t have hard evidence on that, but that’s the suspicion; that the George Soros foundation has somehow been providing money because somebody has been paying those people off.”

“My suggestion is that the Justice Department needs to get a warrant to search the books of the Soros foundation to see if indeed they have been setting this thing up,” he added. “The whole idea was to use these people to embarrass the president just before the election.”

Explosive Device Found in Mailbox at George Soros’s Westchester County Home

Oct. 22, 2018

An explosive device was found on Monday in a mailbox at the Westchester County home of George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist who is a favorite target of right-wing groups, the authorities said.

A law enforcement official confirmed that the device was found near Mr. Soros’s home. It did not explode on its own, and bomb squad technicians “proactively detonated” it, the official said.

Federal and state law enforcement officials responded to the scene in Katonah, N.Y., a hamlet in the upscale town of Bedford in northern Westchester, after the Bedford Police Department received a call about a suspicious package at about 3:45 p.m.

“An employee of the residence opened the package, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device,” the police said in a statement. “The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford police.”

Mr. Soros was not home at the time.

The police said they had turned the case over to the F.B.I., which did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In a tweet late Monday night, the bureau’s New York office said it was conducting an investigation “at and around a residence in Bedford” and that there was no threat to public safety.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives did not respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Soros, who was born in Hungary, made his fortune running a hedge fund and is now a full-time philanthropist and political activist. He donates frequently to Democratic candidates and progressive causes and has given at least $18 billion to his Open Society Foundations to promote democracy and human rights around the world.

His activism has made him a villain to conservative groups and the target of anti-Semitic smears. Roseanne Barr called him a Nazi in an infamous tweetstorm, and just this month, Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, falsely speculated that Mr. Soros had funded a caravan of migrants moving north toward Mexico. There is no evidence that Mr. Soros paid thousands of migrants to storm the border. Nor is there evidence that Democrats support the effort, as President Trump has said.

Mr. Soros became a major political donor in the United States during George W. Bush’s presidency. He spent millions backing John Kerry’s unsuccessful bid to deny Mr. Bush a second term, was an early backer of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and contributed more than $25 million to Hillary Clinton and other Democratic candidates and causes during the 2016 election cycle.

Though Mr. Soros’s name has become a trigger for a subset of Republicans and conservatives, he has said that his main goal as a political activist was to see a return to bipartisanship.

He has said it was the extremism of the Republican Party that had prompted him to become a major Democratic donor, but also said he is opposed to the extreme left.

“I don’t particularly want to be a Democrat,” he said.

Bedford is about 50 miles north of Manhattan and has been home to many well-to-do city transplants, including Martha Stewart, Glenn Close and Ralph Lauren. Katonah, where Mr. Soros has a home, is known for its cultural offerings, including the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts and the Katonah Museum of Art.

The town is known for its insularity and lack of gossip, which allows for well-known residents to fly under the radar. “They look to Bedford as to being protective of their privacy,” John Stockbridge, Bedford’s historian, said in a phone interview.

Mr. Stockbridge said that the town has largely avoided drama or violent scares. “I’ve been here for 35 years and I don’t remember any incident like what you’re talking about,” he said.

Wayne Allyn Root Thinks He’s Uncovered Undeniable Proof of George Soros’ ‘Treason’

By Kyle Mantyla | October 25, 2018 4:10 pm

Right-wing commentator, conspiracy theorist and Donald Trump–obsessed sycophant Wayne Allyn Root unleashed a rant on his Newsmax TV program last night in which he called for George Soros to be arrested and imprisoned for treason for supposedly funding the caravan of Central American migrants that is headed toward the United States, as well as for supposedly encouraging undocumented immigrants to illegally vote in Nevada’s upcoming midterm elections.

Root claimed that he has been receiving “nonstop” text messages on his phone “from Democrat volunteers, from the Center for Progress, and from Jacky Rosen’s campaign for U.S. Senate in Nevada” that have allegedly been urging undocumented immigrants to vote multiple times in next month’s election.

“They say, ‘Eff Donald Trump,’ they say, ‘Eff Dean Heller,’ our United States senator,” Root claimed. “They say, ‘Vote early and often. Vote now during early voting and vote again during the election’ … They say, ‘Trump is the worst guy in the world, Trump is the Antichrist, Trump wants to kill Mexicans, Trump murders Mexicans, he will deport you or murder you if you re-elect Dean Heller.'”

“We can all guess George Soros is behind the caravan,” Root continued. “George Soros is also behind Jacky Rosen.”

“The people in the caravan have rehearsed a script and what they’re saying is Donald Trump is the Antichrist and he’s going to hell,” Root said. “Those are the same words they used in the text to me that are supposed to be going to illegal aliens, clearly, in the state of Nevada. They want them to vote, they want them to vote multiple times, illegally multiple times, and they said, ‘Trump’s the Antichrist and he’s going to hell.’ These are the same words from Soros and from Soros.”

“This man should be arrested for treason,” Root declared. “He should serve out the rest of his life in prison. He has committed treason, he’s a traitor to the United States.”

“This caravan is backed by him,” he added. “Now we know it. The same words that are being used in texts by the Democratic Party in Nevada are being used by people who are illegals, hordes of foreign illegals—criminals, gang-bangers, rapists, murderers and ISIS terrorists all mixed together, not to mention drug mules, drug traffickers, child traffickers. How about the women who are with kids? Those are human shields. Eighty percent of the caravan is proven to be military-age males, and they’ve got a few women and kids with ’em who might be, by the way, kidnapped. The children might be sex victims, the women might be raped every night and they’re doing this at gunpoint.”

'Dripping with poison of antisemitism': the demonization of George Soros

Image

Earlier this month, Donald Trump repeated the familiar accusation that Soros pays for protesters, when he said that the “elevator screamers”– protesters who were confronting senators over their votes for Brett Kavanaugh, the then-nominee to the supreme court – had their signs “paid for by Soros and others”.

And in Minnesota last week, a TV ad in support of the Republican congressional candidate Jim Hagedorn described Soros as a “connoisseur of chaos” and a “funder of the left”. It implied that Hagedorn’s Democratic opponent, Dan Feehan, a combat veteran, was “owned” by Soros due to his employment by a centrist foreign policy thinktank, the Center for a New American Security.

The condemnation of Soros – a Hungarian-born Jew whose very open and public giving favors progressive causes – has been a constant drumbeat in countries where he works. This is particularly true of former Soviet bloc states like Russia, Hungary and Poland, where Soros initiatives have been banned and politically attacked. It surfaced in US rightwing media during the Bush administration, when Soros became more active in opposition to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

From the racist white nationalist site the Daily Stormer to major conservative media stars, the right has been increasingly united over the last decade in seeing the hidden hand of Soros, whom they frequently describe as a “globalist”, in all manner of events.

He has been falsely accused by the right of orchestrating alleged violence from so-called “antifa” groups, manipulating the world economy, being a wartime Nazi collaborator and sponsoring the entirely fictional project of “white genocide”.

Image
An anti-Soros campaign ad reading ‘99% reject illegal migration’ and ‘Let’s not allow Soros to have the last laugh’ in Budapest, Hungary.

Figures like Alex Jones imagine Soros as the manipulative mastermind of a vast “globalist” conspiracy that seeks to restore the world to elite control, kill millions and reduce humanity to slavery.

Breitbart has published scores of articles on Soros’s alleged influence. Talk show host Michael Savage has told his 11m daily listeners that Soros should be arrested and the groups he sponsors investigated by Congress. Earlier this year Fox News’ Tucker Carlson accused Soros of hating the United States, and on Monday night he laughed when a guest brought up the pipe bomb sent to Soros’s house.

Politicians have adopted the rhetoric. The Trump-aligned Florida congressman Matt Gaetz tweeted the suggestion that Soros might be paying money to Honduran immigrants to “join the caravan & storm the US border @ election time”. This suggestion was uncomfortably close to the white nationalist “white genocide” narrative that accuses Jews of orchestrating the demographic replacement of white Americans.

...Matthew Lyons, a researcher and the author of several books on rightwing populism and far-right ideology, said that commonly circulated narratives about George Soros resonate with a long history of antisemitic myths and stereotypes.

“One of the central antisemitic themes for a thousand years, at least, has been the notion that Jews represent this evil, super-powerful group that operates behind the scenes,” Lyons said.

“Often, anti-Jewish conspiracy theories don’t explicitly talk about Jews or ‘the Jews’ as a group. There’s some kind of code word or symbol that’s used in place.”

Encoding Soros as a “globalist” ties in with much older ways of talking about Jews in Europe. “For centuries,” Lyons said, “Jews were characterized in Christian-dominated Europe as a people that didn’t have a country. They were the ‘wandering Jew’. They were seen as visitors or interlopers in other people’s countries and so they were international in that sense.”

A spokesman for Minnesota the Republican Jim Hagedorn, stressed that his campaign does not coordinate with the National Republican Congressional Committee, which made the ad. But he did not back away from what he described as the ad’s criticism of Soros’s “aggressive funding of far-left positions in the American political sphere”.Most of the right – and especially Republicans – customarily deny any link between their attacks on Soros and antisemitism.

He compared attacks on Soros to the left’s criticisms of figures like the Koch brothers, two billionaires who lavishly fund rightwing political causes. The ad, he said, “is no more sinister than the messages in my opponents’ campaign”. He also pointed to alleged connections between Minnesota’s Democratic attorney-general candidate, Keith Ellison, and the Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan, who has repeatedly made antisemitic statements in public.

In light of pipe bomb attacks on figures, including Soros, who have loomed large in rightwing conspiracy theories, this may sound like whataboutery.

Lyons says, though, that while a legitimate discussion can be had about the outsized influence of wealthy people on our politics, in recent years the right has all too easily manipulated the sentiments that might inform that discussion.

“I think a lot of it goes back to the notion of the socialism of fools,” Lyons says, referring to the characterization of antisemitism frequently attributed to August Bebel.

“If you can take people’s anger at the people in power, take people’s sense of being beaten down and ripped off, take people’s sense that the economy is screwing them over, that their sense of entitlement is at risk, and blame it on the Jews or certain wealthy Jews, then that’s very helpful for deflecting people’s anger away from the actual systems of power.”

Yes Jack, there are many billionaires and a focus on 1 as a billionaire 'patsy' is misdirection,

but this billionaire does shape countries and the rights and choices of their peoples

I dont know what would have happened in Europe if Varoufakis had stayed, and Greece had rejected the terms of the Troika or even bailed from the Euro,
but Varoufakis left, Tsipras folded, and the Greeks got ground into the dust,

and Soros played a role in that one ...

http://www.ekathimerini.com/234102/arti ... neofascist

i personally dont care if he's Jewish or Bolivian, i do care about the role he has played in global politics in the last few decades.

Was Varoufakis wrong to criticise him at this moment? should everyone refrain from criticism of him now because he is a far-right hate target?
the question is why, who, why, what, why, when, why and why again?

Ron DeSantis Spread George Soros Fear Days After a Bomb Was Sent to Soros

Attacks against the Democratic financier just haven’t stopped.

10.29.18 10:51 AM ET
Just days after federal authorities discovered a bomb left on George Soros’ property, Ron DeSantis, the Republican candidate for governor of Florida, spread fears that the Democratic financier could infiltrate the state’s government.

Speaking at Inman Park Baptist Church in Winter Haven this past Friday, DeSantis was in the midst of arguing that a victory by his opponent, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, would fundamentally destroy Florida’s economy, when he noted the ability of a governor to appoint swaths of people to statewide agencies and boards.

“He could be seeding, into our state government, you know, Soros-backed activists,” DeSantis said of his opponent.

Portraying Soros as a liberal boogeyman has been a rite of passage for conservatives for years. That’s been especially true this cycle in Florida, where Soros has been one of the top financial supporters of Gillum’s gubernatorial campaign.

But DeSantis’ remarks came at a particularly delicate time. That Tuesday, news broke that an explosive device had been found at Soros’ suburban New York home. It was the first revelation of what turned out to be a mass assassination attempt on numerous leading Democrats. Just hours after DeSantis spoke, the suspect in those bombings—a Donald Trump-loving Florida man—was arrested by authorities.

DeSantis has been repeatedly criticized during the campaign for his ties to fringe figures, including white nationalists, and his use of racially tinged comments. He urged voters not to “monkey this up” by electing Gillum, in what was viewed by many as a reference to Gillum’s race. He attended a conference with infamous alt-right figures, and has refused to return money from a donor who once called Barack Obama a “Muslim n----r.”

DeSantis has recoiled at accusations that he’s soft-peddled racism, though it became a flashpoint during a recent gubernatorial debate.

The DeSantis campaign did not return a request for comment. But he is not the only Republican official who has found himself in hot water over the use of Soros as a campaign pressure point in the wake of the bomb scares.

Two days after Soros was targeted, the National Republican Campaign Committee released an ad in which it attacked a Democratic candidate for being financed by Soros. That ad, along with a prior one by the committee, was criticized for having anti-Semitic undertones (Soros is Jewish).

On Wednesday, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) removed a tweet he had posted that attacked Soros and other Democratic donors. The tweet had been posted just one day after the Soros bomb threat. Its removal became news again after a gunman killed 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. The alleged shooter had reportedly rationalized his actions by citing a conspiracy theory that Soros was funding a caravan of migrant Hondurans en route to the United States, and reportedly told authorities: “They’re committing genocide to my people. I just want to kill Jews.”

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.
