Super Bowl 2017

Postby Karmamatterz » Sun Feb 05, 2017 10:38 am

Post your observations about any memes, messages or high/low weirdness here. Perhaps we see some, or maybe we don't.I love football, but the NFL is a huge supporter of the military and flag waving nationalism. Toss in all the marketing for our conspicuous consumption and we have a smorgasbord of sloppy mind fuckery goo with an odd shaped ball being grabbed by grown men.

I was going to OP just this but thought against it. I think there are two football likers here at RI. You and I. I will be keenly attuned to whatever happens.

Hopefully the Patriots get a beatdown. But I understand what you mean and how you meant it. It will be interesting to see all the military and right wing shit they have planned. Supposedly Lady GaGa has a little something planned for the halftime show. We shall have to see what the NFL lets her get away with.

As a reminder all you people not in North America, "football" refers to the ball's length. It is played with the foot in some instances, but is a far superior game to what we call soccer. Soccer is boring as fuck. I have tried to watch soccer and I don't know what the coach's actual job is. We will see. I hope some players sit out the anthem. I doubt they will though.

We'll make a day and how just you and me
Where the music plays all night
They got the boogie band blowin' that's bound for hell
And when they get to movin' they never stop
You just keep on playin' that down home beat
You just keep on layin' it down hot

Sorry, Patriots. Not looking good for you especially given the Falcons get the ball back first in the second half. Score on that drive, I feel it will be over. Oh the commercials pretty much suck.

I guess I picked the wrong week to give up drinking sweet liberal tears...I guess I can drink Budweiser again though...Thank God!
By chance, I watched James Gandolfini's last movie The Drop on a plane back from the Philippines yesterday (Sunday here), which included the Super Bowl in the narrative...Amazed, again, at how the clear connection between all formats of the Spectacle are so clearly on display these days...Football Politics War...

Jesus, was I wrong. Bummer, I hate the Pats. All signs pointed to Falcons blow out. Welp. Football is over for most the year now kids. As per the OP I saw nothing of note. Lady Gaga's show was crazy well put together.

Haha how about this?
Putin said “I can kill someone with this,” took Kraft’s Super Bowl ring

In 2005, Patriots owner Robert Kraft joined several other American business leaders at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Putin left with Kraft’s Super Bowl ring. After questions arose about what happened, Kraft released a statement saying he had given Putin the ring as a present to show his respect for the people of Russia.

Now Kraft says that’s not exactly how it happened.

Kraft now says Putin took the ring without his permission, and that the George W. Bush White House urged him not to make an issue of the theft because of concerns about the incident damaging U.S.-Russian relations.

“I took out the ring and showed it to [Putin], and he put it on and he goes, ‘I can kill someone with this ring,’” Kraft said at a speech this week, according to the New York Post. “I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out.”

Kraft said he intended to do whatever he could to get the ring back from Putin, until the White House urged him to let it go.

“I really didn’t [want to]. I had an emotional tie to the ring, it has my name on it,” Kraft said. “I don’t want to see it on eBay. There was a pause on the other end of the line, and the voice repeated, ‘It would really be in the best interest if you meant to give the ring as a present.’”

And so Kraft gave up his Super Bowl ring. We hope Putin didn’t actually kill someone with it.
