In the electoral matter, Bernie is as good as you could possibly get. The daily lockstep smear against him from corporate media, establishment punditry and those sincerely deluded into the extreme Trumpocentric panic or "moderate-liberal-centrism" tells you this. It's incredible he's even a possibility in the American context. Accept that and put your energies into whatever worthy issue-based movement effort speaks to you the most and seems to you to have the best path toward actually moving things. I'd say antiwar.

Mueller-Dämmerung

If Nietzsche was right, and what doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger, we can thank the global capitalist ruling classes, the Democratic Party, and the corporate media for four more years of Donald Trump. The long-awaited Mueller report is due any day now, or so they keep telling us. Once it is delivered, and does not prove that Trump is a Russian intelligence asset, or that he personally conspired with Vladimir Putin to steal the presidency from Hillary Clinton, well, things are liable to get a bit awkward. Given the amount of goalpost-moving and focus-shifting that has been going on, clearly, this is what everyone’s expecting.

Honestly, I’m a bit surprised. I was sure they were going to go ahead and fabricate some kind of “smoking gun” evidence (like the pee-stained sheets from that Moscow hotel), or coerce one of his sleazy minions into testifying that he personally saw Trump down on his knees “colluding” Putin in the back room of a Russian sauna. After all, if you’re going to accuse a sitting president of being a Russian intelligence asset, you kind of need to be able to prove it, or (a) you defeat the whole purpose of the exercise, (b) you destroy your own credibility, and (c) you present that sitting president with a powerful weapon he can use to bury you.

This is not exactly rocket science. As any seasoned badass will tell you, when you’re resolving a conflict with another seasoned badass, you don’t take out a gun unless you’re going to use it. Taking a gun out, waving it around, and not shooting the other badass with it, is generally not a winning strategy. What often happens, if you’re dumb enough to do that, is that the other badass will take your gun from you and either shoot you or beat you senseless with it.

This is what Trump is about to do with Russiagate. When the Mueller report fails to present any evidence that he “colluded” with Russia to steal the election, Trump is going to reach over, grab that report, roll it up tightly into a makeshift cudgel, and then beat the snot out of his opponents with it. He is going to explain to the American people that the Democrats, the corporate media, Hollywood, the liberal intelligentsia, and elements of the intelligence agencies conspired to try to force him out of office with an unprecedented propaganda campaign and a groundless special investigation. He is going to explain to the American people that Russiagate, from start to finish, was, in his words, a ridiculous “witch hunt,” a childish story based on nothing. Then he’s going to tell them a different story.

That story goes a little something like this …

Back in November of 2016, the American people were so fed up with the neoliberal oligarchy that everyone knows really runs the country that they actually elected Donald Trump president. They did this fully aware that Trump was a repulsive, narcissistic ass clown who bragged about “grabbing women by the pussy” and jabbered about building “a big, beautiful wall” and making the Mexican government pay for it. They did this fully aware of the fact that Donald Trump had zero experience in any political office whatsoever, was a loudmouth bigot, and was possibly out of his gourd on amphetamines half the time. The American people did not care. They were so disgusted with being conned by arrogant, two-faced, establishment stooges like the Clintons, the Bushes, and Barack Obama that they chose to put Donald Trump in office, because, fuck it, what did they have to lose?

The oligarchy that runs the country responded to the American people’s decision by inventing a completely cock-and-bull story about Donald Trump being a Russian agent who the American people were tricked into voting for by nefarious Russian mind-control operatives, getting every organ of the liberal corporate media to disseminate and relentlessly promote this story on a daily basis for nearly three years, and appointing a special prosecutor to conduct an official investigation in order to lend it the appearance of legitimacy. Every component of the ruling establishment (i.e., the government, the media, the intelligence agencies, the liberal intelligentsia, et al.) collaborated in an unprecedented effort to remove an American president from office based on a bunch of made-up horseshit … which kind of amounts to an attempted soft coup.

This is the story Donald Trump is going to tell the American people.

A minority of ideological heretics on what passes for the American Left are going to help him tell this story, not because we support Donald Trump, but because we believe that the mass hysteria and authoritarian fanaticism that has been manufactured over the course of Russiagate represents a danger greater than Trump. It has reached some neo-Riefenstahlian level, this bug-eyed, spittle-flecked, cult-like behavior … worse even than the mass hysteria that gripped most Americans back in 2003, when they cheered on the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the murder, rape, and torture of hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children based on a bunch of made-up horseshit.

We are going to be vilified, we leftist heretics, for helping Trump tell Americans this story. We are going to be denounced as Trumpenleft traitors, Putin-sympathizers, and Nazi-adjacents (as we were denounced as terrorist-sympathizers and Saddam-loving traitors back in 2003). We are going to be denounced as all these things by liberals, and by other leftists. We are going to be warned that pointing out how the government, the media, and the intelligence agencies all worked together to sell people Russiagate will only get Trump reelected, and, if that happens, it will be the End of Everything.

It will not be the End of Everything.

What might, however, be the End of Everything, or might lead us down the road to the End of Everything, is if otherwise intelligent human beings continue to allow themselves to be whipped into fits of mass hysteria and run around behaving like a mindless herd of propaganda-regurgitating zombies whenever the global capitalist ruling classes tell them that “the Russians are coming!” or that “the Nazis are coming!” or that “the Terrorists are coming!”

The Russo-Nazi Terrorists are not coming. The global capitalist ruling classes are putting down a populist insurgency, delegitimizing any and all forms of dissent from their global capitalist ideology and resistance to the hegemony of global capitalism. In the process, they are conditioning people to completely abandon their critical faculties and behave like twitching Pavlovian idiots who will obediently respond to whatever stimuli or blatantly fabricated propaganda the corporate media bombards them with.

If you want a glimpse of the dystopian future … it isn’t an Orwellian boot in your face. It’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Study the Russiagate believers’ reactions to the Mueller report when it is finally delivered. Observe the bizarre intellectual contortions their minds perform to rationalize their behavior over the last three years. Trust me, it will not be pretty. Cognitive dissonance never is.

Or, who knows, maybe the Russiagate gang will pull a fast one at the eleventh hour, and accuse Robert Mueller of Putinist sympathies (or appearing in that FSB video of Trump’s notorious Moscow pee-party), and appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the special prosecutor. That should get them through to 2020!

Great article. It's as if TPTB rubbed their hands in the aftermath of 9/11 and challenged themselves.

You didn't tell me man. I spent the last two years religiously watching Rachel Maddow and reading Marcy Wheeler -- these are the quality players man, I ain't falling for no Louise Mensch, I can trust Marcy and Rachel! -- and praying for a happy Fitzmas.

The most important function of it, and it wasn't even the most intended one but a bonus to the #Russiagate initiators, was to demobilize or render irrelevant the enormous anti-Trump opposition that was there on Day 1 by sapping it of its potential political contents relevant to change in America. I do NOT sneer at the Women's March (it was very Clintonish but very diverse, and #Russiagate was still a far-behind third place to actual women's issues and concerns about racism and immigration among those attending), or the airport demonstrations, or the revival of workers' activism still ongoing. Since Trump unlike Obama is visibly evil to the majority who think they're liberal or party-independent or non-deplorable (or who are obviously excluded by the white supremacy at the MAGA core), and since he's not actually the end of but the new phase of neoliberal wage suppression politics, the movement potentials don't go away and have to be channeled.

The effect was sort of like, but way bigger than, what Obama accomplished with the "I Got This" appeals, which demobilized a literal movement that had elected him and had absorbed the antiwar and other Bush-era P&J movements. (How the two party model is usually "supposed to work." So you get two or three million people at an inauguration, and half of them don't stick around the next day to demand the end of the "Bush Agenda" since, hey, "He's Got This!") It was also sort of a steal from 9/11 Truth, which ultimately went nowhere for all the obvious reasons, by constructing a "conspiracy theory" version of Trump that a small multitude of individual adepts could adopt and follow and refine into their own talking points to sell every day to their not-yet-woke friends.

Again, dampening an anti-Trump movement (that would also contain anti-capitalism or at any rate some New Deal-style social democracy) wasn't Job 1 for those who started this. For DNC-Clinton, it was their reactive narrative for "what happened." For empire interests and think tanks and spookish "initiatives" a la I.I. or New Knowledge/Hamilton 68, it was about using any bullshit to construct the right enemy. For non-FOX corporate media and twittoblogosphere panic cottage producers competing for audience, it was a suitably apolitical non-anti-capitalist attention strategy (or true belief, lord save us) that could be cast as patriotic.

The last element (the media side, with its death-throes competition for attention) really amped up the incentive to advance daily bullshit, and resulted in most of the freelance fabrications that sank the complex's credibility. But since it was too much bullshit from the start, and so remote from both reality and daily concerns of most people, the most important result was the half-normalization and solidification of Trump -- why do the liberals just HATE him, why?! -- and opening the potential we now see for power elite reconsolidation around new cold war and interventionism. Trump policy has been disciplined, as if this was necessary, into following an acceptably anti-Russian line. And everyone from Pelosi rightward can agree: Socialism! There's your enemy!

Now all the real shit that is characteristically (if not exclusively!) Trumpist, the extreme no-varnish non-technocratic gangster kleptocracy, the family emoluments plunder (I love the inauguration stuff), billionaire cannibals in the cabinet, tacit cultivation of the white power fascist currents, extreme corporatism and deregulation, etc. etc., becomes a second-round echo to the failed (and always improvised) #Russiagate psyop. The real Trump outrages can still work to block the administration and possibly defeat it, but every effort will now be portrayed from the right as though the House committees and state prosecutors are only looking, finally, at real business connections because the "collusion" story didn't work to stop this guy the "liberals" just viscerally "hate." (One thing that gave me hope yesterday was the reemergence of the Kushner-666-Saudi-Qatar story. My hilarious Fitzmas hope is that Mueller as his report move indicts Kushner for that, but of course it's faint. I guess the real magical instant Trump-and-Clinton destruction would still be if the Epstein story truly breaks.)

Wildcards include when and how the inevitable financial-economic crash comes, whether this year or next, through what set of triggers, and how severe or manageable through Fed tools.

This is what bothers me the most. Trump is such a pile of rat shit that we could have spent the last 3 years focusing on real issues, engaging new voters, and working towards solid goals.

But instead we exhausted people with overblown Russiagate stories 24/7.

For me, the problem with Russiagate from the start has been that even if every breathlessly reported new allegation were true, these allegations would be down on my list of reasons to despise Trump's coronation well below his rank stupidity, xenophobia, bellicosity, narcissism, and mendacity. From Trump's serving as the perfect caricature of the nouveau riche ugly American to his direct appeals to white resentment in having to share their socialistic safety net with other minority groups in order to dismantle the entire safety net to his endless parade of appointed criminals, kleptocrats, and vile opportunists, the list of legitimate, undeniable reasons to hate Trump is longer than his insane border wall.

But let's instead focus all of our irrefutable outrage on charges of "treason" (whatever that is supposed to mean in our New World Order of multinational conglomerates and billionaire overlords), and better still, let's put all of our faith and hope in the byzantine labyrinth of our Kafkaesque legal system because we can always trust lawyers and their inexorable pursuit of true justice!

Just you wait until those awesome lawyers save us all. Just you wait! They got this! Just trust the exact same apparatus that gave us the Warren and 9/11 Commissions. They will definitely not pull away the football this time! Who needs feet in the street when you have Superlawyers on the job!

But all of my friends wanted to believe as desperately as Agent Mulder, and I did not have the heart to tell them anything other than "Save your energy. Sometimes it's better not to watch." Having devoted years of my own life to assaulting BushCo with the most intrepid of internet invective, I could not help but emphasize from the sidelines with the faintest of the faintest of hopes.

Cheney made countless millions in Halliburton stock options by starting/extending a war/quagmire that killed thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Middle Easterners without so much as facing a single stern question about this from the media. But anti-Trump activists were supposed to believe that it was just a matter of time before Trump was deposed (and replaced with whom?) because of his supposed "collusion" with Russia? How did anyone fall for this?

All I can surmise is that despite all the evidence to the contrary, people still believe in the ultimate beneficence of some imaginary gray knights who have both the will and the power to save us from plunging headfirst into the heart of darkness with our eyes wide open. For some reason, we still wish to believe that they will rescue us from the worst of them.

Yes, precisely. Treason! Poor souls, those subscribing to such a concept. We must take pity on them, as they remain unaware -- by willful ignorance or otherwise -- of their surroundings.

Just you wait until those awesome lawyers save us all. Just you wait! They got this! Just trust the exact same apparatus that gave us the Warren and 9/11 Commissions. They will definitely not pull away the football this time! Who needs feet in the street when you have Superlawyers on the job!

The mindf#ck of 2016 was simply too much for those who subscribe to the overt presentation of our System. Their eyes and ears closed to all stimuli EXCEPT the potential GLORY of Mueller's Investigation.

MUELLER would lead them to Salvation. NOTHING else was true. Nothing else mattered.

Mueller would deliver onto them the Promise of an Ouster.

And rest assured, it's not over yet. Oh no. It will still happen. Mueller opened the door -- the Pandora's Box -- to allow other 'Enforcers' to Complete the Mission, and remove the orange-hued blight from our consensus reality.

Y'all just wait.

...and wait.

...and wait.

The lionization of Robert Mueller is quite a thing to behold, btw.

Sam the Eagle carefully supplemented with a Joe Friday booster to offset any nagging hints of Roy Cohn.
