You're preaching to the converted. I married into an indigenous family and my own children are card-carrying aboriginal natives recognized by the government. Their ancestors were incarcerated in residential schools and the lineage goes back before the mass genocide of natives by invading colonists to a time when true freedom involved owning all the tribal land collectively with custodial care of natural resources and environment as well as wildlife and fisheries for critical survival sustainability. In Canada the official process of formal reconciliation and compensation continues in legislation enacted by all levels of government. Designated compensation, entitlement and resources are allocated and negotiated mutually by hereditary leaders, elected officials and band members. Significant benefits in health and welfare services apply.
While still far from perfect, our elected government officials and the multinational population of Canada support and sustain respectful coexistence and continue working to limit and legislate against social and employment prejudice and racial discrimination. It's a work in progress and far from resolved fairly. However, few still cling to the adversarial attitudes engendered by the colonial exploitation and genocide against the first peoples of our land, Such entrenched racial bigotry and intolerance on both sides is futile for mutual coexistence.
Much like the historical problems in the states and everywhere else, yesterday and today, people need mutual respect to progress together.
