Edir Macedo has a church, a bank, a TV channel, and a Moses complex. And with the election of Jair Bolsonaro, he has emerged as the country’s most controversial kingmaker.

UCKG temple.jpeg

The headquarters of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God does not resemble your typical megachurch. Its eighteen stories dwarf the big-boxes of the Texas and Missouri exurbs. Behind pillared walls of imported granite and marble, a 10,000-seat sanctuary features neither crosses nor organs, but a menorah motif running from entrance to pulpit. Men in shawls and skullcaps that look a lot like Jewish tallits and yalmukahs conduct ceremonies next to Hebrew-inscribed Tablets of Stone and a gilded Ark of the Covenant. The building is meant to be a supersized reproduction of the biblical Temple of Solomon, but by way of Caesar’s Palace.

This is São Paulo, not Vegas or Jerusalem, and the men onstage are Pentecostal pastors, not rabbis. To be more precise, they are Neo-Pentecostal pastors, practicing a syncretic stew of the prosperity gospel, millenarianism, miracle healing, demon invocation, and exorcism, while boasting a level of Judeophilia weird even by the generous standards of Christian Zionism. Once a spiritual outlier, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) stands at the forefront of Brazil’s rapid transformation into a Catholic-minority country. Its seven million members constitute Brazil’s second-largest Protestant denomination, after the Assemblies of God coalition.

In the UCKG, the Holy Spirit does more than purge demons. It sets believers up for the acquisition of great wealth. The living proof is 74-year-old Edir Macedo, a former street preacher and lottery worker who over the course of four decades has built the UCKG into a billion-dollar church-media juggernaut. This past autumn, he used the levers of this power to help elect Brazil’s first Evangelical president. With the ascension of the far-right ex-Army captain Jair Bolsonaro, Macedo cemented his status as a pivotal figure in the future of post-Catholic Brazil.

One of them lives in the same condo as Bolsonaro.

I have to say I've repeatedly watched the bit from Democracy Now! of 11 March, starting at 36:30. It's two minutes from the Carneval-winning performance of Mangueira, Rio's top samba school.

I hope it's terminal, or at least permanently debilitating.

Bolsonaro is among the most repugnant fascists in power since the halcyon days of the... 80s? :wallhead:

Brazil's Columbine: Ten Dead in School Shooting

Image

Two former students opened fire at a Suzano, Brazil school on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, and killed at least six teenagers as well as two school officials before dying by suicide in an attack that police said was inspired by the 1999 Columbine massacre in the United States. The two armed men were wearing face masks or hoods. They shot and killed the six children who were on their snack break, as well as two school officials, before fatally turning their guns on themselves.

They reportedly were carrying firearms, crossbows, and homemade bombs.

A Columbine copycat? A few media accounts in Brazil are discussing this school shooting as a copycat of the 1999 Columbine attack, which involved two young men with multiple fatalities. But this date is filled with anniversaries.

March 13, 1943, is the date on which the Nazis liquidated the Jewish ghetto in Kraków, Poland.

This Brazilian shooting occurred on the anniversary of the Dunblane shooting in Scotland where 16 youth and a teacher were killed, ending in the suicide of the gunman. On March 13, 1996, Thomas Watt* Hamilton, a local Stirlingshire man, shot dead 16 children and their teacher, Gwen Mayor, in Dunblane Primary School's gymnasium before killing himself. He used his licensed weapons and ammunition.

This is not the first mass school shooting in Brazil. On the morning of April 7, 2011, twelve children aged between 12 and 14 were killed and 12 others seriously wounded by an armed man who entered Tasso da Silveira Municipal School (Escola Municipal Tasso da Silveira), an elementary school in Realengo on the western fringe of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Watch: Glenn Greenwald Explains the Political Earthquake in Brazil Caused by Our Ongoing Exposés

Glenn Greenwald
June 15 2019, 11:39 a.m.

LAST SUNDAY, THE INTERCEPT and The Intercept Brasil published a series of exposés that has created a major political earthquake in Brazil that has only grown and intensified throughout the week. In less than a week, the once-revered justice minister of President Jair Bolsonaro’s government, Sérgio Moro, now faces widespread calls to resign from the same large Brazilian media outlets that spent years transforming him into an untouchable icon of integrity and uncritically applauding his every move.

Even more grave, the improprieties revealed by our reporting have cast serious doubt on the validity of numerous guilty verdicts issued by Moro and the anti-corruption task force, beginning — most importantly — with the conviction and imprisonment of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva last year at the exact same time that he was the overwhelming frontrunner to win the presidency in 2018. That conviction by Moro, which we now know was the byproduct of highly improper and unethical conduct, is now scheduled to be reviewed by the Brazil Supreme Court as early as next week.

The archive we received from our source is vast and contains many more explosive stories yet to be reported. Just last night, we published another story exposing even more serious improprieties by Moro, widely regarded as the anchor of legitimacy for the Bolsonaro government, that has led to more calls for him to resign. Because these issues are complex, but just as important, for those outside of Brazil, we created a video explaining what this archive is about, what these revelations mean, and why the consequences of our reporting are so significant — not only for Brazil, but for the entire democratic world.

Oh, shit!

I love it when they get caught being their own transporters.

(Just so you don't think it's a Latin or third world thing: Helmut Kohl while chancellor once carried suitcases filled with millions of marks in cash from donors whose names he never disclosed until he died to secret party accounts. And if an American president is ever going to be caught being his own bag man, who but the present occupant?)

Brazilian Army Sergeant Arrested for Trafficking 39 Kilos of Cocaine on Presidential Plane

Spanish security forces arrested a member of President Jair Bolsonaro's military entourage at the Sevilla airport for possession of 39 kilos of cocaine in his suitcase.

"Today in the morning the Defense Minister informed me of the arrest of an aeronautical officer carrying narcotics. I ordered the Defense Minister to collaborate immediately for early clarification of the facts," President Bolsonaro tweeted.

The 39-year-old air force Sergeant was traveling on an official plane that was making a reconnaissance trip before the Brazilian president was due to board another plane to attend the G20 summit in Japan on Wednesday. Once the incident in Seville was made public, Bolsonaro altered his travel plans.

"Brazil's president changed Tuesday night the route of his trip to Tokyo... After taking off in Brasilia, Bolsonaro had to stop in Seville; however, late in the evening, his agenda showed Lisbon as the fight plan's new scale. The president's press office did not explain the reason for the change," El Pais, a Spanish newspaper, reported.

Through his Twitter account, Bolsonaro also defended the Brazilian army's "ethics and morality" and said that "if the military officer's participation in this crime is proven, he will be tried and condemned."

"In Bolsonaro's delegation, the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) plane with 39 kg of cocaine is making Brazilians lose patience. Brazilian military was arrested in Spain transporting 39 kilos of cocaine in a FAB plane which was the reserve vehicle of the Bolsonaro's delegation to the G20."

Bolsonaro's statement contrasts with some facts because it is not the first time that Brazilian air force members have taken advantage of their status to traffic drugs.

"In April, the Brazilian Military Superior Court ordered the expulsion of a lieutenant colonel for being involved in trafficking 33 kilos of cocaine," El Pais recalled and added that the official was convicted for integrating a "cocaine trafficking international specialized network" which used military aircraft.

Bolsonaro and his government received a massive backlash as Brazilians took to social media to reject such actions by members of the right-wing government referring to the scandal as "cocaine affair" the news of which surfaced just a few hours after the country's Supreme Court rejected two habeas corpus requests for the freedom of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, while delaying the ruling on one until August.

"Justice Minister Sergio Moro or President Bolsonaro must explain how a member of the military was trafficking drugs in a presidential reserve plane. And as a public servant, Moro has an obligation to provide the details of his agenda in the U.S.," said Jean Wyllys, the former socialist senator and gay-rights activist who was forced to leave Brazil after death threats he received from far-right paramilitary groups.

"Brazil has become a country so sui generis that while its justice minister was talking about the fight against drugs at the DEA, the presidential plane was trafficking cocaine in Spain," said Maufalavigna, a Brazilian man from Sao Paulo.

"While Lula remains as a prisoner of justice without any evidence against him, 39 kilos of cocaine travel in a soldier's bag inside a Bolsonaro plane," La Nave Comunica commented.

Bolsonaro's gonna be so pissed! His bribes gifts to select fellow G20 attendees were intercepted. I can hear them now, "That Bolsonaro, he always promises, but never delivers."

Was wondering why you posted Steve Allen's photo, but not for long.

Brazil's Bolsonaro says Greenwald could 'do jail time'
Date created : 27/07/2019 - 21:53

Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro said Saturday that American journalist Glenn Greenwald may "do jail time in Brazil," but he would not be deported from the Latin American country.

Greenwald, who lives in Rio de Janeiro with his Brazilian husband and two adopted children, is co-founder of The Intercept investigative website which has published leaked chats showing Justice Minister Sergio Moro conspired to keep leftist icon Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva out of the 2018 presidential election that Bolsonaro ultimately won.

Describing Greenwald as a "trickster", Bolsonaro said the journalist would not be expelled from Brazil under a decree issued by Moro on Friday that allows for the deportation of foreigners considered dangerous.

The decree has "nothing to do with" Greenwald, Bolsonaro was quoted by Brazilian media as saying. He cited the fact Greenwald is married to "another man and has adopted children in Brazil."

"Trickster, trickster, to avoid such a problem, he marries another trickster and adopts a child in Brazil," Bolsonaro said.

"That is the problem we have. He will not leave. Maybe he will do jail time in Brazil, but he won't be kicked out."

Greenwald reacted swiftly on Twitter, describing Bolsonaro as a "wanna-be dictator" and saying the government "does not have the power to deport me."

"They don't have anything on me," he said, reiterating he would not leave Brazil.

Greenwald has faced calls for his deportation over the publication of leaked Telegram messages Moro exchanged with prosecutors when he was a judge spearheading a massive corruption investigation known as Car Wash.

Moro, who was appointed to Bolsonaro's cabinet in January, has been accused of improperly trying to influence the probe that has claimed the scalps of scores of high-profile figures, including Lula, since it began in 2014.

He has denied any wrongdoing and says criminals hacked the cell phones with the aim of overturning convictions resulting from the investigation.

Moro says four people arrested Tuesday for allegedly hacking phones were the source of the chats leaked to The Intercept.

The Intercept has refused to identify its source or how the information was accessed.
