Man Charged With Making Death Threats Against Rep. Ilhan Omar
He was arrested and accused of threatening to assault and murder a United States official

Patrick Carlineo, a 55-year-old man from upstate New York, was arrested after calling Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) office and threatening to kill her. “Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a fucking terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her fucking skull,” he said, according to the criminal complaint.

Carlineo was arrested Friday morning and charged with charged with threatening to assault and murder a United States official. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

The call took place on March 21 at 12:20 p.m., and Omar’s staff immediately informed the U.S. Capitol Police who coordinated with the FBI on the investigation. When police arrested and questioned Carlineo, he initially denied making the threat, saying he had said, “If our forefathers were still alive, they’d put a bullet in her head,” CBS Rochester reported.

But, once the FBI explained that lying to federal investigators was a crime and that they had a recording of the phone call, Carlineo said he had been upset at the time and did not recall the exact language that he had used. Later, he told authorities he could have said something like what was on the recording, but he was not certain.

During questioning, Carlineo said that he was a supporter of President Donald Trump, a patriot, and someone who “hates radical Muslims in our government,” according to an affidavit filed by an FBI agent. Carlineo also told officers he had a .22 caliber shotgun in his home.

Omar is a practicing Muslim who has been targeted because of her religious beliefs. In March, Fox News host Jeannine Pirro was censured by her network for saying that Omar’s wearing a hijab was “antithetical to the U.S. Constitution.” And in February, a poster trying to link Omar to the 9/11 attacks was displayed in the West Virginia state capitol.

“No wonder why I am on the ‘Hitlist’ of a domestic terrorist and ‘Assassinate Ilhan Omar’ is written on my local gas stations,” Omar tweeted at the time.

And, to fuel the fire further, Trump made disparaging remarks about Omar in a speech in front of the Republican Jewish Coalition, referring to her criticism of Israel.

This statement by Trump is reprehensible. If something happens to Omar from a Trump supporter, Trump has a large degree of responsibility. Worthy of impeachment in and of itself. Trrump should be called to Congress to explain himself.

trump also called Bibi their prime minister ...he might as well called Bibi his prime minister

trump: "The asylum program is a scam. Some of the roughest people you've ever seen. They should be fighting for the UFC. They read a little page given by lawyers. They tell them what to say."

After threatening to close the border with Mexico, trump uses the sort of white nationalist rhetoric that motivated the New Zealand mosque shooter: "I will do whatever is necessary to stop an invasion of our country. That's what it is."

He mentions that some asylum seekers have "tattoos on their face."

I’m a historian of genocide and mass violence. Let’s be clear. Trump talks like a Nazi, like Rwandan genocidaires, like the Indonesian military folks who killed 500,000 civilians in six months in 1965. This is the pre-language of genocide, the dehumanizing of future victims.

I found it pretty interesting that she had a documentary made about her before she even won anything -- just like Cory Booker, another plucky upstart who was obviously groomed for the job and supported by an existing political machine, but presented as an everyman outsider. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8194728/

The funding traces back to Jerome Hill, wealthy scion of Minnesota and Yale man who founded a lot of cultural institution nonprofits during the 1960's. I'm fairly sure we all know what usually means, especially given the timeline. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerome_Hill

It's worth considering that, in taking on Israel as she has, she is articulating positions for the Tikkun Olam contingent of American Jews, who are and have been archly critical of Netanyahu's approach to ruling Israel. So it's not like she's standing up alone, here, there is a network for finance, support and cover.

Ilhan is, like many Somalian women I have known, whip-smart and articulate. She also married her brother, and that scandal will explode into more public view once she becomes a liability to her current support network. All in all, hard to see her as anything but an expedient political device for a cold civil war between American and Israeli Jews.

Ever notice how these guys bully women out of op-Ed gigs. Teaching gigs. Congress. They mob us out if we step out of line with our big mouths, because they need all women to know our ability to engage as full human beings is only at their pleasure.

Ilhan Omar is being publicly tortured to teach all of you a lesson

Whatever ragged edges, shortcomings, dirty undies, or mistakes you got they’ll use against you. But this isn’t about the substance of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s behavior or actions & everybody participating in this lynching knows it

May Ilhan Omar and her children have the best security our nation can provide.

Yes, and the most abominable sin we women make in their eyes, especially a black woman, the mistake punishable by death is simply breathing for the sake of one’s own air. Speaking for the sake of one’s own truth. Don’t you forget who’s boss, bitch. That’s what this is about.

Goodnight, patriarchy. Goodnight, white supremacy. Goodnight, Nazis. Goodnight, bigots. We will fight you unto death. God bless America, the one yet to be born.

And that is why the greatest freedom a woman can have right now is the freedom to speak her mind. Today, tonight, for the duration of this tweet, this bitch is free

That’s right, with the right alchemy of privilege, you can shoot someone on 5th avenue and still remain president. Make any lesser mistake as a female, and you should be raped or murdered. least that’s what my mentions told me should happen to me, all day today

shorter version: the full power of the state, and donald trump’s online mob, can and will be turned on individual political “enemies” under this illegitimate government. First they came for Ilhan Omar, guys. Wake up.

In a democracy we don’t subject people to public stoning like this. She’s an elected representative. It’s insane.

Ilhan Omar has courted controversy ever since she transformed, in the public’s conception, from a telegenic symbol of American pluralism to an actual person with actual opinions. In the months after her swearing-in to Congress, the Minnesota representative has been strident in her criticism of Saudi Arabia and Israel. Both are American allies, but it’s her position on the latter country that has prompted members of her own party to turn against her. The past two months have seen her accused varyingly of anti-Semitism, disloyalty to the United States, and, most recently, of downplaying the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The first criticism can be attributed to her suggestion that American support for Israel is “all about the Benjamins” — a seeming nod to the bigoted trope that rich Jews control the world. The second and third are more flagrantly Islamophobic in origin.

The backlash came to a head this week after footage surfaced of Omar speaking about Islamophobia at a Council on American-Islamic Relations event last month. “Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and frankly, I’m tired of it and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it,” Omar said to an audience gathered in Los Angeles. “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something,” she said, gesturing as if to separate herself from ‘some people’, “and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”

Conservatives seized on Omar’s characterization of 9/11 as “some people did something” to cast it as an effort to trivialize the attack. President Trump on Friday tweeted a video that intercut her repeatedly saying “some people did something” with footage of the 9/11 attacks, with the caption, “We will never forget!” Representative Dan Crenshaw, a Texas Republican, tweeted that her comments were “unbelievable.” Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel added that Omar is “anti-American,” while the New York Post on Thursday published a cover photo of airplanes colliding with the Twin Towers. “Rep. Ilhan Omar: 9/11 was ‘some people did something,’” the headline read. “Here’s your something: 2,977 dead by terrorism.” The photo echoed imagery from an Islamophobic poster displayed at the West Virginia statehouse last month, which pictured Omar in front of the collapsing World Trade Center. “‘Never forget,’ you said,” the caption reads. “I am the proof — you have forgotten.” Such an ungenerous interpretation of her remarks is only possible if one is inclined to believe that Omar sympathizes more with terrorists than her murdered countrymen. That she spoke them in the course of decrying Islamophobia makes it especially disconcerting that her political opponents would decontextualize them to fan the flames — she receives regular death threats on the basis of her faith, including from one New York man who threatened recently to “put a bullet in her fucking skull.”

Omar’s imprecision regarding Israel can be frustrating for her supporters. Even those who engage with her geopolitical critiques in good faith might find her deployment — intentional or inadvertent — of anti-Semitic tropes unforgivable, were she not so apologetic about her self-proclaimed ignorance and backed by a vocal cohort of Jewish-American progressives who insist that her comments were directed at a government — not a people — whose supporters routinely accuse its critics of anti-Semitism to stifle debate. But it grows increasingly apparent that efforts to discredit her are rooted in a larger project for which her comments are mere pretext. One of the first two Muslim women ever in Congress was always likely to face smears equating her with terrorism and questioning her loyalty and fitness to serve. Such are the wages of embodying an existential threat to a politics that has spent decades profiting from fear of Muslims, immigrants, and — more recently — refugees and asylum seekers, and vowing ruthlessness toward them in response.

Omar is a Congressional “first,” and her opponents smell blood in the water. Even her less-spotlit Muslim woman counterpart, Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib, has faced dubious allegations of anti-Semitism and having terrorist sympathies. (Tlaib is Palestinian-American.) The political value of attacking both is apparent. For Republicans, it enables them to deflect from their own bigotry, personified most recently by a president who has attempted to ban Muslim immigration, dissolve the American asylum system, and cast Muslims as latent or active terrorists while demonizing brown-skinned immigrants more broadly. For centrist Democrats, entertaining the suggestion that Omar is anti-Semitic is an opportunity to signal their commitment to pluralism while shoring up their ties to Israel and its supporters. Both rely on a willful misreading of her intentions that is more compatible with anti-Muslim stereotypes than with her actual, documented opposition to human- and civil-rights violators of all stripes.

Such reductionism is not a recent trend. Congressional “firsts” have long been targeted by political opportunists and bigoted peers, dating back to Reconstruction. Following the Civil War, lies underpinned by stereotypes were how anxieties regarding free black people holding elected office in the South were articulated. “One cannot study Reconstruction without first frankly facing the facts of universal lying,” wrote W.E.B. DuBois in his history of the period, Black Reconstruction. “There was not a single great black leader [of that era] against whom almost unprintable allegations were not repeatedly and definitely made.” Hiram Rhodes Revels, the first black U.S. Congressman ever elected, in 1870 faced legal challenges from white Democratic Congressmen who claimed he was ineligible because he had not been a citizen long enough, having only been granted said status a few years prior with the 14th Amendment and 1866 Civil Rights Act. (These challenges were later overruled.) Parroting the prejudices of the era, historians and artists attempted to cast Reconstruction as a time when black vice, sloth, and stupidity transformed government into a corrupt and chaotic free-for-all. D.W. Griffith’s 1915 film, Birth of a Nation, famously portrayed black Congressmen voting on bills with their boots off, feet on their desks, gorging on fried chicken.

This is how power and orthodoxy respond to threats. Neither has encountered a black Muslim Congresswoman before, or such a vocal critic of Israeli policy and the lobbying that supports it. Political discourse has reached the point, with Omar, where good-faith debate over her deployment of anti-Semitic tropes has been largely displaced by pure Islamophobic id. Opponents regularly equate her with terrorists, riling up voters, politicians, and pundits who already believe that the proper response to Islam is violence. Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric has already inspired successful and attempted terror attacks — including by Cesar Sayoc, who sent mail bombs to prominent critics of the president, and Robert Bowers, who killed eleven people in a Pittsburgh synagogue after being inspired about a Trump-peddled conspiracy theory about criminal immigrants.

But Omar’s treatment is a logical extension of decades of Islamophobic rhetoric and policy — much as the Reconstruction era response to black congressmen was an extension of centuries of anti-black sentiment and violence. Perhaps it should have been expected in a scenario where Republicans — whose platform and standard-bearer, Trump, call for the exclusion and maltreatment of Muslims, refugees, and asylum seekers — came face-to-face with a Muslim refugee and former asylum-seeker from Somalia who is now one of their peers. Political disagreement was bound to define the encounter. But anti-Muslim bigotry is not innate — it is a choice that Omar’s detractors continue to make, and the dangers of doing are only becoming more apparent. Now that Trump has fanned the flames, the backlash only stands to intensify further. The costs are already steep, and they will only get higher.

A New York Newspaper Ran an Attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar. Now Yemeni American Bodega Owners Are Boycotting It.

“This rhetoric threatens the safety and wellbeing of Omar, Muslim leaders, and the larger Muslim American community.”

Two years ago, about a thousand Yemeni American corner-store owners in New York City closed their businesses and gathered to protest President Donald Trump’s ban on Muslim travelers to the United States. The stores, known as bodegas, can be found across the city and help keep New Yorkers ticking with morning coffee, deli lunches, and newspapers.

Now these bodega owners are flexing their political muscles again to show their solidarity with Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who continues to face attacks from the president and Republican pundits for her recent comments about 9/11.

On Thursday, the New York Post published a front-page image of the Twin Towers up in flames alongside a snippet of a quote from a recent speech by Omar that, out of context, appears to suggest she does not appreciate the seriousness of the tragedy at the World Trade Center. On Saturday, the Yemeni American Merchants Association, which formed after the travel ban protests, announced it would stop selling the newspaper because of the coverage of Omar.

As I wrote in this piece, during Omar’s full speech, at a March banquet for a Muslim American civil rights organization, the congresswoman was urging Muslim Americans to stand up for their civil liberties, which she argued had come under attack in the years since 9/11. “Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen, and frankly, I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it,” she said in the speech. “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”

The New York Post, owned by Rupert Murdoch, was not the only outlet to take her comment out of context. Trump tweeted a video of her sound bite juxtaposed with footage of a plane flying into the Twin Towers, and retweeted a comment that asked, “How is this woman walking the halls of Congress.” On Fox News, also owned by Murdoch, “Fox & Friends” host Brian Kilmeade said he wondered whether Omar, a Somali refugee and American citizen, was “an American first.”

In an open letter on Saturday, the Yemeni American Merchants Association said the Post’s front-page display “provoked hatred.”
In an open letter on Saturday, the Yemeni American Merchants Association said the Post‘s front-page display “provoked hatred” and “aims to harm Omar and her family and other people of the Islamic faith.” The Minnesota congresswoman has faced death threats over the past week, with a man in New York arrested after he said he would shoot her in the head. “This rhetoric threatens the safety and wellbeing of Omar, Muslim leaders, and the larger Muslim American community at a time when Islamophobia is at an all-time high,” the group added. Indeed, the two most recent FBI reports on hate crimes showed that anti-Muslim assaults are at record levels in the United States, hovering at three times higher than they did a decade ago.

The Yemeni American group told the Guardian its boycott of the Post was indefinite. “It’s not the first time that the New York Post basically spreads hate and fear in their newspapers,” Ayyad Algabyali, the group’s director of advocacy, said. “This might be for good.”

Democrats defend Rep. Ilhan Omar after Trump retweets 9/11 video against her

Democrats defend Rep. Ilhan Omar after Trump retweets 9/11 video against her
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). (J. Scott Applewhite / Associated Press)
Top Democrats on Saturday rushed to defend Rep. Ilhan Omar after President Trump retweeted video that was edited to suggest she was being dismissive of the significance of the worst terrorist assault on U.S. soil.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi scolded Trump for using the "painful images of 9/11 for a political attack" against the first-term Minnesota Democrat.

Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination to challenge Trump in 2020, said the Republican president's tweet was an "incitement to violence" against Omar, who is Muslim American, and others like her.

The video Trump retweeted Friday pulls a snippet of Omar's recent speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations in which she described the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center as "some people did something," and includes news footage of the hijacked planes hitting the Twin Towers. Trump also tweeted, "WE WILL NEVER FORGET!"

Omar's remark has drawn criticism largely from political opponents and conservatives who say the lawmaker, one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress, offered a flippant description of the assailants and the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

Neither Trump's tweet nor the video included her full quote or the context of her comments.

Omar told CAIR in Los Angeles that many Muslims saw their civil liberties eroded after the attacks, and she advocated for activism.

"For far too long, we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I'm tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it," she said in the March 23 speech, according to video posted online. "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties."

CAIR was founded in 1994, according to its website, but its membership skyrocketed after the attacks.

Many Republicans and conservative outlets expressed outrage at Omar's remarks. Fellow Democrats, including some who have disagreed with Omar in the past, defended her.

"First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as 'some people who did something,' " tweeted Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas. The retired Navy SEAL lost his right eye in 2012 in an explosion in Afghanistan.

"Here's your something," the New York Post blared on its cover beneath a photograph of the flaming towers.

Pelosi, who was in Germany visiting U.S. troops Saturday, said in a statement that "the memory of 9/11 is sacred ground" and should always be discussed "with reverence." The California Democrat said it is wrong for Trump to "fan the flames to make anyone less safe."

Omar didn't appear to be backing down.

She tweeted a quote from President George W. Bush, who said days after the attacks: "The people — and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!"

"Was Bush downplaying the terrorist attack?" Omar tweeted. "What if he was a Muslim."

Several of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates condemned Trump's tweet.

O'Rourke, who campaigned in South Carolina on Saturday, likened Trump's tweet to his rhetoric about Mexicans, described in the past by Trump as murderers and rapists. O'Rourke said "there is a cost and there is a consequence" to Trump's comments.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar noted that a New York man was recently charged with threatening Omar's life.

"The video the president chose to send out today will only incite more hate," Klobuchar said. "You can disagree with her words — as I have done before — but this video is wrong. Enough."

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Omar "won't back down to Trump's racism and hate, and neither will we."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts also accused Trump "of inciting violence against a sitting congresswoman — and an entire group of Americans based on their religion."

Omar repeatedly has pushed fellow Democrats into uncomfortable territory over Israel and the strength of the Jewish state's influence in Washington. She apologized for suggesting that lawmakers support Israel for pay and said she isn't criticizing Jews. But she refused to take back a tweet in which she suggested American supporters of Israel "pledge allegiance" to a foreign country.

Her comments sparked an ugly episode among House Democrats after they responded with a resolution condemning anti-Semitism and the measure became a broader declaration against all forms of bigotry.

Last year, for instance, Miami-area resident Cesar Sayoc sent pipe bombs to prominent liberals across the nation and went to jail. Today another South Florida man was arrested, this time for allegedly threatening to kill four Democrats.

Federal authorities today announced that John Kless, a 49-year-old resident of Tamarac in Broward County, called three Democrats at their Washington, D.C. offices April 16 and left voicemail messages threatening murder. The lawmakers included California Congressman Eric Swalwell, Detroit Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker.

In all three messages, Kless referenced his hatred for Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar — repeatedly calling her a "towel head" and a member of the Taliban. In his message to Tlaib's office, Kless referenced Omar's recent "some people did something" comments about 9/11 — a statement Omar made to argue that all Muslims should not be punished for the actions of the few who committed the attacks. But conservatives have taken Omar's comments entirely out of context to falsely argue that Omar was diminishing the impact or tragedy of 9/11.

"It was your Taliban bitch, the one who opened up her fucking towel-head mouth about how 'some people did it,'" Kless allegedly said in his message to Tlaib. "You know what? She's lucky she's just getting death threats, bitch. So are you. All right? You're lucky they're just threats, motherfucker, 'cause the day when the bell tolls, whore, and this country comes to a war, there will be no more threats. Your life will be on the fucking line."

Kless allegedly continued to say the following:

No one wants to fucking hear you or that other little whore. I'd like to take that bitch and throw her right off the Empire State Building, that fucking whore. Tell her to shut her fucking mouth. You fucking fuck her all the time probably. So tell her to shut the fuck up, all right? From one towel head to another. You stanking, fucking, smelly, fucking bitch. Fuck off. I wish all of you the worst. You can go fuck off in life. Fuck you, and fuck Mohammed too, you bitch fucking cunt.

Kless also allegedly criticized Swalwell's stance on gun control. Kless reportedly said if Swalwell enacted gun-safety laws, someone would kill the lawmaker. He also called Swalwell a communist and, oddly, the N-word. (Swalwell is white.)

"The day you come after our guns, motherfucker, is the day you'll be dead," Kless said, according to a federal indictment. He added, "You're gonna die. Don't wanna do that shit, boy. You'll be [on] your deathbed, motherfucker, along with the rest of you Democrats. So if you want death, keep that shit up, motherfucker."

Swalwell this afternoon thanked the Capitol Police and Florida law-enforcement officials for apprehending Kless:

Kless repeatedly used the N-word to refer to Booker and called him a "monkey," according to court records, adding he wanted to kill black men like the senator. "You're a fucking disgrace," Kless allegedly said. "We need to kill all you motherfuckers, man, every fucking one of you, man." He added that the terror attack in Charlottesville, Virginia — in which a white supremacist drove a car into progressive protester Heather Heyer — killed only "one fucking person." He then said Booker should tell his "colleague with the towel on her head to shut up about 9/11."

"You're going to be the motherfuckers that pay," Kless allegedly told Booker. "Don't worry — you government officials will be in the graves where you belong." (Booker and Swalwell are both running for president in 2020.)

In two of the three voicemail messages, Kless defended Trump and told lawmakers to stop criticizing him. After running Kless' name and phone number, federal investigators learned he had previously left "profane/harassing" messages at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office.

Kless has been charged with making threatening communications, a federal crime punishable by up to five years in prison. Kless is the second man this month arrested for threatening Omar: On April 4, an upstate New York man, Patrick W. Carlineo Jr., was arrested for threatening to shoot the congresswoman.

Ilhan Omar Speaks Out Against U.S. Sanctions & Bipartisan Support for Regime Change in Venezuela
May 01, 2019
Watch Full Show

Congressmember Ilhan Omar, before we talk about the remarkable rally held for you, in defense of you, yesterday, just outside the Capitol next to the Reflecting Pool, if you can comment [on] what’s taking place right now in Venezuela, the U.S.-supported coup attempt against President Maduro?

REP. ILHAN OMAR: Thank you, Amy, for having me. It’s really great to join you all this morning.

I concur with what Professor Sachs was saying.* You know, I mean, a lot of the policies that we have put in place has kind of helped lead the devastation in Venezuela. And we’ve sort of set the stage for where we’re arriving today. This particular bullying and the use of sanctions to eventually intervene and make regime change really does not help the people of countries like Venezuela, and it certainly does not help and is not in the interest of the United States. And I think, finally, we have folks in Congress that see what Professor Sachs was referencing.

AMY GOODMAN: I want to turn right now to your questioning, Congressmember Ilhan Omar, your questioning of Elliott Abrams, the man who President Trump has made the special envoy to Venezuela. Elliott Abrams, the person who was convicted of lying to Congress twice, ultimately he was pardoned by President George H.W. Bush. But this is Elliott Abrams before you, in committee.

REP. ILHAN OMAR: In 1991, you pleaded guilty to two counts of withholding information from Congress regarding your involvement in the Iran-Contra affair, for which you were later pardoned by President George H.W. Bush. I fail to understand why members of this committee or the American people should find any testimony that you give today to be truthful.

ELLIOTT ABRAMS: If I can respond to that—

REP. ILHAN OMAR: It wasn’t a question.

AMY GOODMAN: Congressmember Ilhan Omar, if you can talk about the significance of Elliott Abrams being made the point person on Venezuela, and what you do think Congress can do? I mean, congressional leaders, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others, a bipartisan group, are supporting Guaidó, the man who simply announced that he’s president of Venezuela.

REP. ILHAN OMAR: People like Elliott Abrams, neocons and warmongers, you know, for so long have pushed for policies that are now—we can see, not only in Central America, but many parts of the world, the kind of devastations that they’ve had for decades. I could not pass up the opportunity to not only remind the American people that this was someone who was convicted of lying to Congress, but also someone who had a heavy hand in some of the most devastating policies that we imposed on Central America, and that there is a direct correlation between the kind of mass migration that we’re noticing right now from Central America and South America to this country.

I think, for so long, we’ve used muscle memory to sort of generate our foreign policy. And it’s about time, like Professor Sachs said, that we pause and we look at the kind of implications that our policies have, what our ultimate goal is, what is being successful, and what are some policies that we should do away with. I remember talking to Madam Secretary Albright and talking to her about the success of sanctions we impose around the world and how some of them have devastating effects on the actual population and not on the governments that we see as our adversaries. And she concurred with me that many of the sanctions that we impose ultimately lead to devastations—and we are seeing it now in Venezuela—and ultimately lead to having severe problems in that country, which doesn’t stabilize life for the people, and certainly puts us here in the United States at risk.

* I'll post Sachs' remarks in the "Venezuela - U.S. Again Tries Regime Change" thread.

Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-IL), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) respond after President Trump doubled down on his racist tweets that these four congresswomen of color should 'go back' to the countries they 'came from.' For the record, three of the congresswomen were born in the U.S., and all four are U.S. citizens, duly elected by American voters.

trump put a target on her back

Trump Rally Crowd Launches Into ‘Send Her Back’ Chant Over Ilhan Omar

We now have a new gross Trump rally crowd chant to replace “Lock Her Up!”

We now have a new gross Trump rally crowd chant to replace “Lock Her Up!”

During President Trump’s Wednesday night rally in Greenville, North Carolina, he took aim at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), one of the Democratic congresswomen of color he told to “go back” to where “they came” from.

“Omar has a history of launching vicious anti-Semitic screeds,” the president said.

The MAGA crowd knew just what to do next.

“Send her back! Send her back! Send her back,” the audience chanted as Trump soaked it in for a few moments.

Omar is a United States citizen. She moved from Somalia as a child and gained her citizenship as a teenager.

Trump's rally occurs just days after he blasted off a series of racist tweets at the so-called Squad, a group of four progressive Democratic lawmakers that include Omar, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).

Following widespread outrage over the bigoted tweetstorm, the president has continued to double-down on his remarks and has repeatedly called out Omar by name, falsely accusing her of supporting Al Qaeda and hating Jewish people.

As Republicans have largely stood by the president as he ramps up his racist attacks, the House of Representatives voted to condemn Trump over his comments. While the vote was largely down party lines, four Republicans and one independent (Justin Amash, who recently left the GOP) joined the Democrats in passing the resolution.

Nancy Pelosi is right there with Trump, painting that target. Hell, Trump just about thanked Pelosi for joining in the demonization of the four coloured Congresswomen.

OH LORD
Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Republican Challenger Appears to be a QAnon Conspiracy Theorist

Danielle Stella is running to unseat Donald Trump’s favorite target. She also seems to be deep into Q.

A Republican House candidate challenging Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has made frequent references to the pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory, potentially making her the latest QAnon believer to run for federal office in 2020.

Danielle Stella, a Minneapolis special education teacher, made a stir on the right-wing internet in June when she launched her campaign against Omar, a frequent target of President Donald Trump. But her campaign strategy appears to include outreach to QAnon fans, with Stella’s Twitter account posting twice last week using the hashtag “#WWG1WGA” — a reference to the QAnon motto “Where we go one, we go all.”

Stella’s Twitter account also follows a number of prominent QAnon promoters.

The fact that you’d ever want that to happen just shows how deplorable your understanding of the U.S. Constitution is. Our founding fathers are literally rolling over in their graves.

Not true. My political party fights for our Constitutional rights that your side of the party is trying so hard to destroy, in order to turn us into a socialist third world Country. They aren't even trying to hide their hatred of America and their lies anymore. #WWG1WGA

Stella went further on Monday, tweeting a picture of herself wearing a “Q” necklace in a tweet that was first reported by QAnon tracker and podcast host Travis View.

While Stella didn’t clarify the meaning of the necklace, her campaign account favorited a series of tweets from QAnon believers who took the necklace as a sign of support for QAnon. One of the favorited tweets included a series of pictures of QAnon believers at Trump rallies. Another warned Stella to “be stealth about certain symbols and things” — apparently a suggestion that she downplay any belief in QAnon.

While someone who appeared to work for the campaign told Right Wing Watch that Stella stood “100 percent” behind Q, former aides told The Daily Beast it was actually a ruse. Jodi Larson, a former Stella campaign staffer who has since backed another candidate, said Stella is just posing as a QAnon believer to gain campaign support.

“She tries to portray herself as she supports it, but she doesn’t even understand it,” Larson said.

Larson accompanied Stella on a trip to Washington, D.C. early this month, where she claims Stella wore the QAnon necklace.

“She just wears it to get attention,” Larson said.

Stella didn’t respond to a request for comment.

QAnon believers have become convinced—through a series of cryptic clues posted online by an anonymous figure known as “Q”—that top Democrats are engaged in a Pizzagate-style pedophile conspiracy and will soon be arrested and either imprisoned or executed by Trump.

A Republican House candidate openly embracing QAnon marks the conspiracy theory’s latest progress within the GOP tent. For over a year, QAnon believers have been showing up at Trump rallies. And the president even invited QAnon promoters to the White House for a “social media summit.” A South Carolina state representative endorsed QAnon in March, although she later claimed she didn’t believe in it anymore, while a California councilmember quoted from the conspiracy theory in the council dais. There is no member of Congress who openly believes in QAnon, though there are several individuals who are trying to make such history. In addition to Stella, Matthew Lusk, a longshot Republican House candidate in Florida, voiced his support for the conspiracy theory in April.

Stella’s tweets aren’t her only interactions with the world of QAnon conspiracy theorists. Shortly after launching her campaign, she appeared on Patriot’s Soapbox, a 24-hour QAnon YouTube channel that has become one of the most popular gathering places for QAnon believers.

While Stella didn’t explicitly mention QAnon in her Patriot’s Soapbox appearance, she did promote the baseless smear that Omar’s ex-husband is secretly her brother. That claim, which has also been embraced by Fox News and Trump himself, is based on no evidence besides an anonymous, three-year-old message board post.

“She was in fact married to a gentleman who I believe to be her brother,” Stella said of Omar on Patriot’s Soapbox.

QAnon fans insist their movement is non-violent. But QAnon believers have been charged with two murders in 2019, including the March slaying of a top leader in the Gambino mafia family. Another QAnon believer is charged with using an improvised armored truck to shut down a bridge near the Hoover Dam last year, after one of Q’s clues failed to be proven true.

Stella has managed to gain some traction in right-wing media, appearing on a show hosted by Todd Starnes, a host on Fox News’s streaming platform.

So far, Stella faces two declared primary challengers. But whoever wins the Republican primary will likely face long odds in the general election — Omar won the seat in 2018 by beating her Republican challenger by more than 50 percentage points.

Stella’s campaign also appears to have been beset by turmoil that has nothing to do with QAnon. Her federal candidate registration form lists her treasurer as a man named Scott Kartman. Reached by The Daily Beast on Tuesday, however, Kartman said he’s no longer with the campaign after being ousted in an internal power struggle.

Since then, Kartman said, the campaign’s current staffers have “made a mess of things.” Kartman said he was considering filing a police report against Stella in an attempt to get back what he describes as property that Stella still has of his.

“She’s got a laptop that belongs to me that I’m trying to get back,” Kartman said.
