And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"

Who can get a budget that's so great?
Who will be the 51st state?
Who has got the secretest Service?
The one that makes the other service nervous?

so you drop all your defenses and you drop all your fears

I'll never forget the first time I heard that Rollins song, in a hotel room in Vienna in 1996. I walked in and idly switched on the TV and the video was just starting on MTV. When the transition came I stood there transfixed with my bag half-unpacked until the very last two words, which made me laugh out loud, though it was more a gasp than a laugh.

Faces and voices are coming back, with a vengeance. Not to mention minds and bodies.

The Sound of 2022:

Beano looked at me
Wi malice on his mind:
He didnae like me singin,
It burst his tiny mind,
Alec McEwan got up
And told im tae shut his mouth.
Ah said 'Go an get im, Alec,
He's a big fat smelly lout.'"

my last post for the thread.
a good requiem for 2021 in America (and the world) - all Hands on the Wheel for 2022. Happy New Year, RI.

At a time when the world seems to be
Spinning hopelessly out of control
There's deceivers and believers
And old in-betweeners
That seem to have no place to go
It's the same old song
It's right and it's wrong
And livin' is just something I do
With no place to hide
I looked in your eyes
And I found myself in you

likewise. Haven't seen that video in years, but was similarly transfixed the first time I watched it. Good use of visuals (Rollins' face becoming increasingly 'dirty' as time elapses -- once exposed, it becomes more difficult to hide behind lies, though as he mentions, it becomes an addiction for the victim..).

Also, the image of him running from 'Real' right before the chorus.

Image
(fittingly, by the lead-up to the 2nd chorus the arrows pointing to "Real" are no longer consistent.)

Calls to mind another classic.. "Religion" in the lyrics can also apply to today's Secularist Religion of choice.

I am the one, Orgasmatron, the outstretched grasping hand
My image is of agony, my servants rape the land

Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain
Two thousand years of misery, of torture in my name

Hypocrisy made paramount, paranoia the law
My name is called religion; sadistic, sacred whore

I twist the truth, I rule the world, my crown is called deceit
I am the emperor of lies, you grovel at my feet

I rob you and I slaughter you, your downfall is my gain
And still you play the sycophant and revel in your pain

And all my promises are lies, all my love is hate
I am the politician and I decide your fate

I march before a martyred world, an army for the fight
I speak of great heroic days, of victory and might

I hold a banner drenched in blood, I urge you to be brave
I lead you to your destiny, I lead you to your grave

Your bones will build my palaces, your eyes will stud my crown
For I am Mars, the God of War, and I will cut you down
